2  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer S9 won't connect or reset. on: July 08, 2016, 11:56:00 AM
I would disconnect the Hash Boards data & power connectors. Just connect power to the controller and ethernet to the Router. Power up and then hard reset the controller. If it does not show after that then most likely you have a faulty controller.

Rich

Thanks for this advice, I was actually going to try this today. Im going to test another PSU on another router to see if it connects there (maybe issue with my router) and if nothing, im going to try this.

**EDIT**

Tried it, no luck. Brought it over to my gfs and her router is setup under 192.168.0.1 and no luck on that router either. I DO get a different blinking pattern on the miner though, the Orange and Green LEDs blink at the same time, at same pace on that router but when looking in the router settings it shows no connection. Resetting still does not work and nothing changes when power in the hashing boards and when their unplugged.

Hello, gonna try to keep this simple as far as where i started and where i'm at now. Below are the steps I have done.

----

Antminer S9 Batch 3, not sure if it works.

PSU = EVGA G2 1600W, it works.

Standard CAT5e Cable, it works.

I plug in the 9+1 power cables and the ethernet cable directly from router to miner.

Turn it on, I get an immediate Fault light (red), fans spin full speed and they stay at that RPM.

No LEDs from the hash boards (from all 3)

The ethernet controller ORANGE LED blinks, but the GREEN LED does not stay lit, it does blink every now and then.

I check my router settings to see what connections my router is seeing. It only sees my computer connected, nothing else.

I attempted to "reset" the miner, I hold the reset button for 5 seconds.... 15 seconds.... 30 seconds.... 45 seconds.... and nothing. Nothing happens.

I sent a PM to Phil* for some advice, He informed me to drop all connections from my router and only connect my computer. (In hopes that maybe the miner is being assigned to a duplicate IP that is already connected to my router). I did this, checked router settings and made sure that its only seeing my desktop computer connected.

Turn on the miner, and no new connection shows up, seems to be getting no connection.

----

Is there any other way for me to factory reset this miner or is it possible for the ethernet controller to be fault? OR if for some reason its set under a static IP for me to find it out via software or something.

If it is finding the IP you can try with Bitmain's IPReporter.  I really like just going into router and finding it that way myself as if you know your router it is not bad, but some have good results with Bitmains IPReporter.    Check out page 9 on official instruction's - https://www.bitmaintech.com/files/download/AntMiner%20S9%20Installation%20Guide.pdf

I would focus on trying to find IP first before going after reset.  But if you have to reset below is how they say to (I have not personally reset a S9 so all direct from manual in quotes as Bitmains words I take no credit)

"To restore your initial settings
1. Turn on the miner and let it run for 5 minutes.
2. On the controller front panel, press and hold the Reset button for 10 seconds.

Resetting your miner will reboot it and restore its default settings. The red LED will automatically
flash once every 15 seconds if the reset is operated successfully."

But to recap I would try again on finding IP.  Focus on that first as you should not have to do a reset when you receive it new (assuming not 2nd hand).

Already tried all of this. IPReporter does not work. Reset button does not work.

*And also looked in my router settings after unplugging everything from it except my main computer and it shows no new connection to my router. Only my computer shows up, nothing else.

5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is bitcoin being used for illegal activities on: July 06, 2016, 08:09:39 PM
Its been said a few times now already and i still see people posting that bitcoin is "too" illegal but all types of currencies are currently being used for illegal activities, WAY more than bitcoin currently is, but i understand why bitcoin is being used because it doesnt hold bound to 1 type of currency. Easy exchange to anything you like and you know exactly what your getting... thats why its a cryptocurrency.
I dont get you point drazah, you mean usd is used for illegal activities? lol it is obvious that criminals in America wont use euro to pay for drugs.btc is fairly used for illegal activies because it is anonymous and very safe plus the system of bitcoin actually supports scammers and criminals.

How is it obvious that criminals in America wont use euros to pay for drugs? All types of money are used for "illegal things" is my point, but that topic with Bitcoin typically blows up a lot more (As you can see from this thread) much more so than fiat money which has been going on forever.
6  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: i need to buy S9 but i have a problem with PSU on: July 06, 2016, 06:35:17 PM
Hey Phillip...

I noticed your strong advocation for down clocking...

A little off topic for the thread -- but:

I live in an ungodly large home for just 2 people -- so the noise isn't even heard 99% of the time...

However, I am plugging in a 1600W PSU into just a regular outlet (20 Amp circuit) for my S9.  I've seen some of the awful pictures of other miners that burned -- Am I OK?  Or should I consider sliding the scale down just a bit...

I know it says that it pulls 1300W -- but every time I check the kilowatt meter, it was between 1138W and 1194W -- temps are fine (air conditioned environment)...

I know that you are an expert -- and reading your advice about down clocking kind of mentally set me back a bit...

I'd like to hash as much as possible -- without risk...

Thanks!!!

 Smiley Smiley Smiley

Im currently hosting my S9 at my house now using an EVGA g2 1600W from a wall outlet also. I chose to underclock for this exact reason, and also just to be safe. I saw a lot of Phils posts saying that they should be underclocked for many reasons

8  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Free electricity on: July 06, 2016, 06:27:36 PM
HI !
so lately ive been thinking into getting into mining . i am from india so does anyone have an idea how is mining in india a friend told me its not profitable these days . Also my electricity is free so can anyone please suggest me a machine which has a good ratio of turnout to my investment . Also is mining less or more profitable in different parts of the world assuming lower difficulty rating for india cause i cant imagine indians getting into this stuff ??

Why waste your time mining and getting back what you paid for the miner after 1 year or so? Your friend is absolutely correct. Please be a wise person and don't waste your money mining. Try making your own gambling website, or make a faucet with a lot of ads, make a youtube video, try freelancing. There are a lot of ways to earn money. Please forget about mining as it takes a lot of time. You will get impatient very soon. P.S: I am speaking from my personal experience

Calling mining a "waste" is relative, along with saying he will get impatient...

Mining is still profitable if you take time and realize what your getting into and realize how the mining game works. If you have a good scenario to mine and also believe that bitcoin will continue to grow then you can sometimes see a ROI in less than half a year (or FAR less this free electricity), then anything past that is pure profit PLUS you can always sell off your equipment after ROI for a bigger step in profit if thats what your aiming to do in the short term. Building a gambling site and/or making a youtube video would be tenfold more work and you have to HOPE you generate traffic to net any type of profit. Mining in essence is fairly straight forward and its not a huge time sink like building a site or a youtube page.

For people with free electricity, your ROI will heavily depend on the amount of money you spend on your gear. You can buy older, less efficient miners but at a far lower value and hit an ROI relatively quick BUT it may not be that much value to be worth it. Personally, Id rather invest in mining then invest money AND a lot more time into other things.

The gravy train may have left, but that doesnt mean there is still profit to be made in mining.

Can you back your words once BTC falls to 250$ again? And again, one with no steady income other than relying on mining is soon to be impatient. As I said, it is my opinion so no hard feelings.

Specifically why i said "If you have a good scenario to mine and also believe that bitcoin will continue to grow then you can sometimes see a ROI in less than half a year"

You obviously don't believe in it, hence why you probably failed with mining as would anyone. It takes a strong heart in bitcoin to be a successful miner, and he is talking about free electric to run a miner, Not sure where you got the idea of "no steady income other than relying on mining is soon to be impatient". Obviously i CANT back my words if it falls to $250, but I can also say "i told you so" if it rises to 1k+, but thats all speculation and really serves no purpose in even posting about.

10  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Free electricity on: July 06, 2016, 02:28:40 PM
The Antminer S9 sounds like your best bet, but they are currently ~2000 USD per + the cost of a PSU and other little things like cabling and cooling might be needed. They are the most effecient, pulling ~1300w each @ ~12ths.
11  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Mining no way for now ... on: July 06, 2016, 01:55:31 PM
I agree with the advice given here, The amount of money it would cost to relocate internationally, find/build in a location to start said mine, and then purchase all the gear would set you extremely far back where you might not ever see a decent ROI. Personally, I think a much easier approach without all the headaches is to have your gear hosted somewhere. These companies exist for reasons like this where people cannot host within their home or the location they are currently at. Unless your talking about hundreds of S7s where renting that much space from a hosting site would be MORE than building your own facility, but then again something of this scope (i hope) would involve a lot more planning and take a while to actually get going.

This is asked a lot here but a lot of other information is needed too. How much free electricity? Is it stable? Will you be running the machines out of your home or a seperate location? How much space do you have available? Free electricity is a great start, pretty much anything will (at some point) give you a ROI depending on what you buy and the scale. Currently the Antminer S9 is the most effecient but costs the most. S7s will also generate decent coin.

There are bitcoin calculators online (Coinwarz is my favorite one) where you can input all the information and it will show you how long it will take for an ROI at current market and will show you how much bitcoin you can generate depending on how much hashing power you input.

14  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: July 05, 2016, 02:53:18 AM
Only a fool pays full price at 2+ BTC for the next batch, with halving in the next 5 days. Bitmain will have to drop S9 price by 50% right after the halving. But stupidity and greedy go hand in hand.

this is hilarious if you actually think this is true

17  Other / Off-topic / Re: Earning a living with bitcoin? on: July 04, 2016, 02:53:44 AM
If you can earn money and make a living in general then you should be able to do the same with bitcoin.

The only difference really is the payment method and as bitcoin becomes more widespread and used, the time will come that most people will pay or get paid in it.

Yes that might happen. I have friends like single mothers who are working at home and they are still paid in US dollars. It is an online work so maybe someday they will also be changed to a bitcoin payment if they prefer it.
There are already a lot of opportunities online just waiting to be discovered. We know a lot of people who just work from home and earn big amounts with their online jobs. These earnings can then be used to buy bitcoin.
To be completely honest I haven't actually heard a legitimate success story when it comes to people who work online doing anything aside from some financial occupation, and some of the best stories I've heard have only placed the people around $70,000 USD a year, maximum. Most of the people I have heard typically fall below that number, and I would say that is an ok wage, but it could probably be better. But I don't know their situation, so whatever works best for them.

70k per year is far more than what most Americans make. But its very possible to create a success story by doing the calculations and also if certain things are available like cheap electricity, how cheap you paid for equipment, and how much your hashing (scale). Huge farms exist that make huge profit because they get all these things. But i believe its possible to mimic this in small scale if you can allign these. Fine a way to get cheap electricty, houseing for units and get cheap gear or very effecient gear and get mining, if mining is what you want to do. You can also just simple invest in Bitcoin and play the market. So many avenues to take with Bitcoin is what makes it nice and makes a lot of things possible

I am planning for 2 x S9 purchase

just having a doubt, few are saying that mining wont be profitable after halving

Is it true?

Most profit depends on your expenses. Like your electricity cost? Are you running it in your house, if so its going to be hot and you may need more cooling, etc etc. But I still think its profitable. I just purchased my first S9 and plan to get more soon. The efficiency is there and I am in a good spot for electricity.

I picked one up, plan to get more. The halving doesn't scare me.
