1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / [warning] Ether Delta Hacking on: December 21, 2017, 02:07:48 AM
Ether delta just had its domain name hacked and the site was/is re-routing to a phishing website, don't use the current site.

Has anyone been effected by it?
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / [PRL] Oyster Pearl predictions on: December 18, 2017, 05:11:18 PM
Opening this discussion on Oyster Pearl.

An alternative revenue stream for websites and a decentralised data storage network.

The network is built on IOTA using smart contracts on Ether. Is this the best of both worlds?

Still very new and only on EtherDelta, predictions for 2018?
3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Super Bitcoin on: December 16, 2017, 07:54:28 PM
What is this communities thoughts on super bitcoin?

Personally I agree with their philosophy that it is better to try to make the changes they want to see in practice than just talking about it. Too many people talk nowadays, not enough action.

Do you think this team has what it takes to make an impact?
4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Bull market on: December 16, 2017, 02:17:41 PM
Just had a scan through the entire market on coinmarketcap... wow!

Almost entire market is up double digits in the last 24h, coins and tokens.

There is a lot of discussion around which coins are the right choice but I think one thing is for sure, we are in the right place people.
The digital asset market finally here and right now is the perfect time to be in, 2018 will be our year!
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / REQ, trust me. on: December 15, 2017, 04:55:46 PM
Buy REQ now

Just look at the charts, Its volume cycles are predictable.
it has reached another low in volume, leveled out and is now beginning to increase again.

The difference with this last volume drop is it didn't see a corresponding drop in price and held its value.
It is preparing for a breakout!

Don't say I didn't warn you, all about train is about to leave the station.
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Be careful, bitcoin will correct on: December 14, 2017, 11:54:59 PM
If not now, eventually.

The price is over inflated, that value has to come from somewhere. The overall economies don't just create value out of nowhere, they move it around.
If the market swells so as we have learnt from the past there will always be a correction to find market equilibrium.

I'm warning you now, as a friend. Don't be caught out when it corrects.
Draw down your stake. Leave some in it if you really want but trust be its better to be safe than sorry as it will correct and when it does if you're not prepared you will loss heavily.

Bitcoin has helped to spread wealth to those who believe in and support new technology. It is time to take that money and invest it in developments elsewhere while we still have the chance.
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Most expensive thing you've bought with bitcoin on: December 14, 2017, 07:26:58 PM
With the recent price of bitcoin there are sure to be some newly made millionaires out there.

What is the most expensive thing you have bought with your bitcoin and how did you buy it? Direct bitcoin purchase or converted it to fiat first?
8  Other / Meta / Improving Signature Campaigns on: December 14, 2017, 01:08:04 PM
I think the biggest problem with signature campaigns is the spam of useless posts it creates. People merely want to get their post count as high as possible and will spam any nonsense to do so.

With the development of the new bitcointalk forum i think there is a great way to solve this:

Implement a functionality for signature campaign managers to track IMPACT of posts, not just post count.

For example a post which has created a valuable discussion thread with many replies is awarded more impact points than one with only a couple of replies. Likewise the more times the post is quoted or upvoted (if this becomes a function in the new forum, I have seen much talk for and against it) the more impact points it receives.

Therefore campaigns award not only post count but impactfullness of those posts. (maybe even a penalty for large numbers of unimpactful posts)

This allows campaigns to improve impact as well as cleaning up the forum of useless spam.
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / list of any confirmed scam coins? on: December 14, 2017, 12:48:46 PM
Does anyone have a list of confirmed scam coins?

By this I mean coins which made claims that were not upheld or which took subversive action such as issuing additional coins without announcement.

I think it would be good to get a discussion and a definitive list set up so we can start to build an idea of what to look out for in the future.
10  Economy / Economics / Interesting thought on electric cars on: December 14, 2017, 11:50:30 AM
As electric cars are pioneered by companies like Tesla will we see rapid development and aggressive competition on improving features?

For years the motor industry has been stagnant with very little in the way of features or price reductions company. Tesla has now changed that.
Through industry automation to reduce price, economies of scales to produce cheaper batteries they are cutting price as fast as they can.
They are also rapidly introducing features such as automation, and others at an impressive rate through software.

It will be interesting to see how the traditional manufacturers will react to such a change in their industry, as they've grown use to stagnation for so long.
11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / REQ up 36% today!! on: December 13, 2017, 03:37:46 PM
This is a strong token with huge potential throughout 2018. Only a few months old put on track for great things.

The team is very strong and experienced.
Their road map and whitepaper is detailed and well structured, and they are ahead of schedule currently!

Some hugely ambitious plans for 2018, starting in first quarter right after they go live on mainnet.

This is the time to buy!!

13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Mining Profitability Index? on: December 12, 2017, 06:21:49 PM
Does anyone know of a resource keeping track of mining profitability across all coins?

I haven't heard of such a service before but was thinking of getting back into mining and the thought came to mind.

Ideally if there was a mining pool which provided me with metrics such as:
-profitability across all coins
-mining difficult progression rate

and had an automated feature to switch between most profitable coins.
14  Other / Meta / Forum Development? on: December 12, 2017, 06:16:20 AM
I have been using the forum for a little while now but i don't really know about the administrative side.

Is there a development team to ensure forum can scale and implement system improvements or has there ever been any changes since inception?
Is there a development fund or donation system in order to support such developments?

Although the forum functions i feel it is very outdated, you would think with the recent wealth accumulation as a result of BTC the 'bitcointalk' would reflect this with feature improvements etc.

I think it would also help with getting 'normies' involved in crypto if the forum were to be updated. It is a very oldchool system and not inviting or user friendly for those less technically inclined.

Is this even possible with the current admin structure? I don't know...
15  Other / Off-topic / Your brain hallucinates your conscious reality on: December 12, 2017, 05:47:54 AM

I came across this TED talk by Anil Seth recently and found it so interesting.

The talk breaks down current research into consciousness and how we perceive reality.
The body of research is still in early days but there have been some fascinating insights made.

The current understanding of consciousness is that we hallucinate what we perceive as reality around us, in a controlled manner.

In essence, our brain makes predictions about what exists in the outside world.
As your sensory inputs are received your brain can then confirm or deny what it had predicted about the world around you, and adjust accordingly.

Anil tests this theory with various experiments and all seem to confirm the theory. Through tricking the senses we can change the persons perception of their reality.

16  Economy / Trading Discussion / Any help on withdrawing funds from Xapo? on: December 12, 2017, 05:36:53 AM
I have roughly 50$ of BTC in an Xapo wallet, an old wallet that I had forgot about.

Since the recent surge in BTC this wallet is now worth roughly 50$.

However the fees for bitcoin transactions now average 30$!!
Xapo only gives 2 options for fees, a high priority and a standard priority transaction, meaning I cant choose to set my own reasonable fees.

As a result my 50$ is trapped unless I want to waste 30$.

Should i take the hit and withdraw the 20$ or does anyone predict future low volatility which will bring average fee back down to a reasonable level?
17  Economy / Economics / Crypto following same evolution as fiat? on: December 12, 2017, 02:14:13 AM
As cryptocurrency gain more traction and 'normies' begin to become more accustomed to it, we will soon see it proliferating into mainstream usage.

There are many similarities between the evolution of crypto and fiat.

Before fiat gold was the currency of choice. It held value to people for a long time but had many problems as a currency, most importantly in liquidity. Fiat evolved to solve this problem, yet was originally set against a gold standard in order to convince people of its value. As fiat matured the FX markets allowed each currency to find a natural value and replace the gold standard. As the financial system matured other assets came into circulation including securities such as bonds and shares.

However fiat was from the outset a physical store of value, and had a very hard time adjusting to the instant, widespread and annonymous nature of the digital world.

Enter bitcoin. In the crypto world bitcoin has held the role of gold, a speculative commodity and the standard at which other cryptos are valued. As it grew in use people began to believe in its value, giving it merit. However there are many problems within its network, like gold, which prevent liquidity and use as a widespread currency. Just as fiat did altcoins emerged to solve this problem. Set against the value of BTC they attempt to solve liquidity issues. Bitcoin, as with gold, has began to transition to a commodity asset, allowing altcoins to take the role of highly liquid currency. Exchanges have yet to stop using what i call the 'bitcoin standard', but efforts are being made which will allow the value of altcoins to be positioned against each other much like the FX markets. In the place of securities we see tokens emerging, each with their own unique monetary benefits.

Cryptocurrency has democratized currency. It has opened up the financial system to anyone and everyone across the world.
What i would love to see soon is a new state formed with no fiat in place, instead allowing its economy to develop with cryptocurrency.
Im not sure that cryptocurrency is mature enough for it yet, but it would be an interesting experiment in use case.
18  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Monero on: December 11, 2017, 10:53:01 PM
Is someone able to explain to me the architecture behind the mining of monero?
It is feasible to mine with CPU, is this a result of a different mining protocol or will difficulty eventually reach a level where CPU is unfeasible?

Related to this is the future of coinhive.
Piratebay recently made the move to use it as an alternative to ad revenue on their site.
The site has code which uses partial CPU capacity to mine monero in the background, generating very small revenues per user.
But some reports suggest in total they generate $12,000 per month using this technique.

It would be an interesting move for the 'freemium' economy, transitioning from ad based revenue to micro-mining based revenue.
Imagine the kind of profits google could generate if they implemented coinhive code into their search engine!  Cheesy

Back to my original point, if monero mining is likely to become too difficult to mine for the average CPU are coinhives days numbered?
I'm new to monero so any information would be appreciated.
19  Other / Off-topic / Anyone else doing exams? on: December 11, 2017, 10:30:31 PM
Is anyone else currently studying for/sitting exams?
Any tips on fun ways to procrastinate when you should be studying?
At least there's only 14 more sleeps to Christmas  Grin

Also anyone got any good material for studying accounting? I could really use it...
20  Other / Off-topic / Opinions on mobile payment apps. on: May 31, 2017, 01:28:33 PM
I am talking about apps such as Venmo and Circle, allowing direct payments with no cost to the user.

What are your opinions on them, they seem to be promising yet the uptake of the service has been pretty slow over the years.

Full disclosure:
I am working as a 'student ambassador' for circle currently.
They are offering $5 to anyone who signs up and uses the app within 2 weeks using a specific code. ( www.circle.com/invite/UNF74A )

The reason I bring this up is I don't see how it is a viable business model, they are literally buying their customers and not making any money off them.
Does anyone know what plans they have for revenue?
What will happen when the Venture Capital funds dry up?

I presume this is what happened to a similar startup called Tilt, which was recently purchased by Airbnb for roughly $60mil. In a previous funding round Tilt had been valued at $400mil so something went wrong, I can only assume it was funds drying up.

edit:
Something funny to mention. When apply for student ambassador at circle the recruiter was sh*t talking bitcoin, saying it was a useless system for payments.
Needless to say I made sure to correct him on that.  Grin
