1  Economy / Currency exchange / [SOLD] $520 (Pesos) for Bitcoin on: March 27, 2016, 01:38:11 AM
Just got back from a trip and I have 520 pesos (~$30 US) I'm unlikely to need again any time in the near future. If anyone wants it, I'll sell and mail it to them (North America only) for $18 in BTC.  A mutually trusted escrow will be determined & used.

Any interest?

EDIT: Item has been sold. I'll post all the details when I get back home for the records.
2  Other / Off-topic / Question About 2FA and Privacy on: March 07, 2016, 10:51:25 AM
It's "always" a good idea to use two-factor-authentication, however, most methods I've heard of are essentially covered under SMS or a mobile app.  This inherently (and, I suppose, this is the purpose) ties an account to a phone number or a device.  Here's where my confusion begins:  I've read about markets on deep web, etc that offer 2FA, and that immediately brings a question to my mind:

Isn't the whole purpose of TOR browsing and the deep web staying anonymous?  How does one use 2FA and not tie to a phone number or a specific device?  Am I missing something basic here?
3  Other / Meta / I Think I've Found An Account Being Sold on: March 05, 2016, 01:47:24 PM
So there's this sale going on: https://archive.is/ys0od

Now, seeing as I don't have a life and I don't sleep much, I decided to try to narrow this down using the criteria the OP gave as a description of the account for sale:

- Bitmixer Sig
- Hero Member
- (light) Green Trust
- Staked address 5+ months old

I went through all 137 pages of the Bitmixer sig campaign to see which Hero Members were still signed up, and only 8 of them had green trust.  Of those 8, only 4 of those had staked addresses 5 or more months ago.  Only one of those 4 is *light* green....the rest are dark green.

So here's my question:  Do I post this account here prior to the end of the sale?  Elsewhere?  Do I neg the account?  Should I wait to see if the password changes?

What do I do here?
4  Other / Meta / One *Minor* Theme Tweak?? on: February 23, 2016, 06:04:54 AM
The "Unread Posts / Unread Subforum Posts / No Unread Posts" behavior doesn't seem to work right (at least for me - *buntu 14.04 using Chrome 48.0.2564.116 64-bit).  Typically, if there are no unread posts in the parent forum, but unread posts in the child forum, the icon is only half shaded/lit.  With the "Service Announcements" board, however, the icon is fully lit even if there are only posts in the child/sub-forum.

Just a minor annoyance to those of us who would like to ignore the "Micro" sub Wink
5  Economy / Service Discussion / BTC-Related News on Twitter? on: February 22, 2016, 10:18:18 AM
I'm constantly on Twitter, and I have to admit that I get a lot of my news (at least the seeds of stories) from my timeline.  However, I'd been away from the bitcoin community for a spell, and I don't know any really good accounts on twitter for news, insight, and maybe investment advice.  Which BTC-related accounts do you follow and why?
6  Economy / Digital goods / [WTB] XBox Live Code on: February 20, 2016, 07:18:26 PM
I'm looking to buy a 1-year code for XBox Live.  I've purchased one on here before, and figured that since it's time for me to renew again, I'd give the forum another try too.  I don't buy anything with bitcoin without using a trusted escrow, even for small purchases.  If you are not willing to do this, please move along.

Thanks ahead of time!
7  Economy / Service Discussion / Why Can't We Have a REAL Exchange?! on: March 04, 2014, 02:34:52 PM
This has become beyond pathetic:

Gox - Utterly incompetent, hacked & millions stolen

C-Cex - Same story - but much less lost

Poloniex - Same story as C-Cex

How the hell are we ever to expect BTC to take off and become a respectable currency if no one can seem to secure a damn website on which to trade it?
8  Other / Meta / Goods Forum is Now Fraudulent Xbox Forum on: March 03, 2014, 09:30:15 PM
Seriously...can we do something about this?

There are like 5 different people selling fraudulently obtained Xbox Ones on the Goods forum and they keep coming...

This is only bringing down the name & reputation of this forum & Bitcoin itself.
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bug in Bitcoin Discovered by PMC Community - Altcoins Affected As Well on: March 01, 2014, 08:05:23 PM
Full Disclosure:  The blog is my own, so I'll link at the very bottom and put the TL/DR here:

Essentially there's a bug in Bitcoin that, after all coins are mined, will reset the block rewards to their original state at the beginning.  I was told this will occur at or around block 13,440,000.

I'm not a developer & I didn't find this bug; I'm just writing up on it so people can see and fix it. Smiley  Anyway, feel free to discuss - or just talk trash about me - below.  I know I have a lot of work to do on the blog itself, lol

10  Other / Meta / Trust System Abuse? on: February 28, 2014, 10:39:03 PM
So I'm sure this is covered, but I'm just not finding it.

I gave a user negative trust for attempting to send another user an infected file.  There are screenshots etc. showing proof that they did this.

As retribution, I assume, this user came back & tagged me with negative trust and said that I stole BTC in the form.  I've never had dealings w/ them, and I want this removed, as I have done nothing wrong, and there is absolutely no good reason for me to have a negative trust rating.

What can I do here?  Am I simply screwed?
11  Economy / Service Discussion / Easybitco.in Is Back! on: February 28, 2014, 02:58:46 PM
For those of you who were members and have been wondering if they'd ever be back, they are!

TeamFresh is back and the site is up and running.  Feel free to drop in the chat & say hi (and earn some bitcoin just for doing so!)

12  Other / Beginners & Help / We're All Early Adopters Again! on: February 25, 2014, 03:09:15 AM
Welp, it looks like Gox might finally be biting the dust.  BTC is spiraling downward, and soon, we'll all be "early adopters" again.

So you're all in the club now....congrats, I guess.
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / [Solved] Qt Creator For Complete Idiots... on: February 24, 2014, 07:22:35 PM
I need it.

So I've attempted to compile Linux Qt wallets for a few different folks, and I can do it, use the app, etc.  The problem is, no one else can use them.

I'm sure this is something extremely basic and I'm bracing for RTFMs, but I didnt find anything useful on google, etc.

I think it has something to do with using & hardcoding my local machine's directories into the app, but I honestly don't know.

So any tips / suggestions on how to fix this or how to get better information for troubleshooting?

UPDATE

The title was right...I wasn't using static libs, etc.
14  Economy / Scam Accusations / C-Cex Has Frozen Your BTC! Not to be Trusted on: February 24, 2014, 05:25:27 PM
What Happened
Due to their poor security, C-Cex's exchange was exploited by a user pumping DRK, and they allegedly lost 300 BTC due to the exploit.  They have now placed *all* BTC balances on hold, and are stating that they may hold these until their "investigation" is completed - which can take up to a month.

User's Profile Link
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=220467

This is not exactly to say they're scammers - however, it is to say that you should be extremely cautious about trusting them with your coin if they cannot secure it.

Will update when more information is available.

Update #1
User has stopped responding via Skype & has now banned me (coincidentally the only person who's left negative feedback on their profile) from the chat on the website. (This was an auto-ban, apparently...now un-banned)

Update #2
After several requests, they responded on Skype by simply posting their twitter address.  When I said that this in no way answered my questions, he then, indeed, took the time to answer the questions I asked.

Update #3
The admin and his cheer leader are claiming that the "thief" is sending BTC back through a tumbler.  In the meantime they are giving back assets to those who dealt in the currency used for the exploit, while those who had not involved themselves at all with said currency are still left with our dicks in our hands.

It has been suggested MANY times that the admin secure a loan using other altcoins earned via the site's transaction fees as collateral and *every time* he has ignored it and said absolutely nothing.  This leads me to believe that he really has no interest in paying people back in a timely manner.

My conclusion at this point:
Site administrator is (and I'm sorry to say it) incompetent in terms of running a secure site - an absolute necessity for running an exchange.

DO NOT, under *any* circumstances, allow this guy access to your assets.
15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / ☠ ☠ ☠ ALT COIN SCAM TRENDS ☠ ☠ ☠ on: February 21, 2014, 09:13:10 PM
Sadly, I think a thread like this has become necessary (as it was in the Lending forum), seeing as there have been at least two scam "launches" with virus/trojan wallets in the past week or so.  As great as it would be for BitcoinTalk.org to have some sort of screening process for new altcoin launches or a "Pay To Announce" system, it's not necessarily a realistic expectation for them to implement such features.  With as many coins as are launched every week (day?), it would almost require a full-time employee to police these things.

In the absence of these, I think the best thing to do is to keep an active thread going which highlights scam trends and - hopefully - protects newer members who may not know any better.

How To Spot a Scam Coin

RULE #1 - *NEVER* Send coins to an IPO that is not protected by a *well-known & well-trusted* escrow provider!!

-  Self-Moderated Announcement Threads
Any thread that doesn't allow criticism, hard questions or complaints should be an immediate red flag.

-  Developer or OP is a brand new account with no posts (or almost no posts)
This isn't a "one-size-fits-all" indicator, as many devs will create a new account in order to keep their coin's "brand" consistent.  Please do utilize caution when you see this, however, and keep an eye out for any other signs of a scam.  If it walks, talks, smells, etc. like a scam....

-  Developer / OP does not promptly respond to questions or concerns about the coin
Most real devs with legit coins have worked long and hard on their coin to get it ready for the masses.  This level of commitment is not likely to end as soon as a launch is announced or pre-announced.  They will continue to support the coin and answer questions, because the more people they have happily mining & using their coin, the more successful they will be.

- No Source Code Available
Almost every legit coin on the market today is essentially Open Source, meaning you can download, review, alter, and redistribute the actual source code from which the coin is built.  Any attempt to keep the source code out of the public eye without good reason (e.g. the developer has a patent pending on a feature of the coin and cannot announce it - in which case they should be able to provide proof that this is the case) should be an instant red flag and you should use extreme caution in downloading it.

- Coin Has No Original Features (or is a Direct Copy of Another Coin)
Pretty self-explanatory.  If the coin is a knock-off, even if it isn't necessarily a scam, why bother?  The only point to these coins is to line the pockets of the script kiddie who copied the source of another coin and ran a couple quick "awk"/"sed" commands to change the name.

-  Coin's "Features" Seem Too Good to Be True / Remain Unexplained
"But you just said..."  I know I did, and I meant it.  For example, however, the recent StackCoin scam had promised a lot of new, exciting things.  The problem (other than the fact that they didn't exist to begin with) was that no one really bothered asking about these features, how they were accomplished / implemented, etc.  User Tk808 *did* make note of this in his review (linked below in this post - use it!), however, in everyone's haste and excitement, they forgot to dig in and ask some hard questions.  All in all, it cost the community over Ƀ69 - slightly under $40,000.00 at the time of writing.

-  Coin is a Blatant Trademark or Copyright Infringement
If you see a new coin launching that uses a known brand name, celebrity, or other trademarked entity, make sure that there is proof that the entity is aware of and endorses the coin.  You'll spot these by constant "we're definitely talking with So-and-So..." assertions, frequent moving of goal posts (e.g. "Their lawyers are signing the documents tomorrow" followed by "well, it's looking like maybe next week"), etc.  Or - as is the case with one coin that I won't mention - they claim to have the backing of someone who has publicly stated that they want nothing to do with the theme the coin uses.

-  The Dev / OP States a "Starting Value" of the Coin
This essentially shows that the individual doesn't really understand crypto or economics.  You can't just arbitrarily assign a value to a coin - especially if it's not even launched yet.  The market decides the value of a coin.  If it's trading for 10 satoshi, it's current value is about 10 satoshi.  The Dev can SAY it's worth $1 USD per coin, but in reality, it means absolutely nothing unless they have 1 USD per coin in storage somewhere to back it.

I REPEAT:  ALWAYS EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION WITH ANY COIN THAT ASKS YOU TO GIVE THEM CURRENCY UP-FRONT
IPO Scams are becoming more and more frequent.  Be smart, and don't send your money without doing your research.  If the coin doesn't provide anything new or groundbreaking to the community, it's most likely yet another clone coin that took about 5 minutes to run a couple quick awk commands and 20 minutes in GIMP.  Don't waste your money on a coin unless it brings something new and innovative to the table and provide an explanation as to how they've done it.

- Tk808 has put together a very good list of questions to ask yourself when considering a new coin.  You can see it below, or just click here

Please let me know if you have anything to add, and I'll update the OP:

17  Economy / Reputation / SlidingHorn Reputation Thread on: January 23, 2014, 08:48:38 PM
Hi Everyone,

This is a re-write of my previous reputation thread (which has had no entries, to date, lol) - I just wanted to create one to introduce myself and have a record of my dealings other than the trust system.  So, with no further adieu...

I'm Ryan; I'm a musician, and a bit of a geek who moonlights as a bartender.  I enjoy messing around with computers (linux systems, specifically), dipping my toes into the crypto world, and essentially just teaching myself new skills to use to help others or help them learn.

In terms of some of the services I may be capable of providing for you:  I dabble in server administration, web design & development (mostly design and tweaking already templated systems), and - as previously mentioned - music.  I would be more than happy to provide other services including escrow (small amounts...my account doesn't justify anything large at this moment),  signature campaign management, consulting, etc.

If any of this interests you, or if you feel I may be able to help you with some sort of issue you're having, by all means, please contact me.
18  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [DMD] Diamond qt Application: conf File Not Being Recognized on: December 18, 2013, 02:36:17 AM
I've built the qt app for Diamond, and when I try to start by entering ./diamondd, I keep getting the same error:

Code:
Error: To use the "-server" option, you must set a rpcpassword in the configuration file:
 /root/.Diamond/Diamond.conf
It is recommended you use the following random password:
rpcuser=bitcoinrpc
rpcpassword=g5F5DYffeGniADVyJoPiSkfRXij7s7UspRXVLfwUNEu
(you do not need to remember this password)
If the file does not exist, create it with owner-readable-only file permissions.

Cool - So I create this file, enter the information I've seen everyone post a million times in the forum/official thread:

Code:
listen=1
daemon=1
server=1
rpcuser=bitcoinrpc
rpcpaccword=(random password)
rpcallowip=*
rpcport=17772
rpcconnect=127.0.0.1
addnode=5.249.152.30

Still nothing.  So I copied the conf file to the src directory with the script:  same error.

I've tried with the "D" capitalized and lowercase (it's always lowercase when posted in here - Capitalized in the error message).  I'm at a loss.  Any help is appreciated! Smiley
