61  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Masking Miner Activity on: March 26, 2013, 06:57:16 PM
Would it be possible to have a script that connects through different proxies *each time* your ASIC were to ask for new work, and thus make the network think that you were different miners all with the same hashing speed?
62  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Currency? Commodity? How about a stock? on: March 25, 2013, 04:37:50 PM
My thoery:

Bitcoin is a publicly traded company stock whose owners are the shareholders.
Some shareholders work at the company to create stock certificates for themselves and sell them to others. (Miners)
The company pays its' employees in more shares. When the amount of shares gets to a certain amount (block halving), the stocks are reverse-split.
Said stock can be purchased publicly from existing stock holders at any time and sold at will.
The purpose of this utility company is to provide a space to swap share values between shareholders.

66  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin Foundation on: February 08, 2013, 09:09:36 AM
Sorry if this is not the right section to post this in as the "Bitcoin Foundation" is a private group and not really supported by everyone at this time. Mods please move this to a more suitable location if necessary.

I was recently recommended by one of the individuals that I placed a bet with to stop posting on the forums and join the Bitcoin Foundation instead, only posting there and only contributing to the foundation's good and betterment of bitcoin as a whole. At first I agreed with them that that seemed like-- wait a minute... I immediately stopped my line of thought and started asking myself, "Who exactly is the Bitcoin Foundation and why do we need them?".

A few weeks have passed since I've been collecting information and letting it simmer in my head and now I'm ready to ask some public questions. First, here are my current understandings that may or may not be flawed:

1) From my minimal understanding of open source and linux, many organizations and software projects need their own foundation to help pay for development. This should also be true for something like Bitcoin, which definitely needs continued development.

2) Bitcoin has a horrible (some argue unrecoverable) public image, has been SEO assassinated with connection to "currency" (legal implications) and "illegal activity" (read: silkroad). A foundation would certainly help a bit in astroturfing the internet in favor of Bitcoin (if that's what everyone wants, although Satoshi seemed to just want us to shut the fuck up and use it).

I am sure someone can find an argument against what I said above, so before they dig into me for "not understanding", I want to present what I also currently understand as negative points. (Keep in mind, my question and purpose of this thread is for more information so that I can make an educated opinion on whether to support them or not).

A) It requires a donation instead of just asking for one. I guess that's fine, but where does the donation go? Why is the bitcointalk.org forum not just doing this instead? We have like what, 5000 BTC now that will most certainly never all be used to make a forum? Does the Bitcoin foundation really need 10,000 BTC a year for a "business" just to say that it supports bitcoin, something that was intended to be decentralized from the beginning?

B) There are no public announcements of what the funds are used for. I am honestly not sure how most software foundations do "business", but the foundation purchased the domain bitcoin.us for $17,500 USD. Does that sound like a good use of your donations?

I would absolutely love to give up my new found awareness of the failures of human nature and just support a group of people to do the leading for me, but the more I am involved in bitcoin, the more I am starting to hate this corporate obsession being brought into it. Things like investing your bitcoins for example-- why are bitcoin investments even necessary, isn't just holding your bitcoins the best investment in the history of bitcoin to date?

I'd really like answers and opinions and I hope no one is offended by my comments. Keep in mind I have never been schooled in economics, politics or open source as most of you Android and Linux using Porcupines have been. I didn't even think there was anything wrong with using your real information on the internet before I got into bitcoin (still don't think it's bad, but understand why it's not automatically good).

Looking forward to thought out, mind-changing responses!
67  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Potential fix for Apple Bitcoin ban on: February 06, 2013, 06:36:18 AM
We're all well aware that Apple has a disgust for anything that competes with iTunes credits, and thus bitcoin accepting apps (especially wallets) are not allowed. There is a potential fix for this though in the realm of games.

For those curious as to what I mean, ask yourselves-- didn't you grow up with a certain game related to money and property trading? Monopoly! What is those properties were actually representative of something else like a trade of value between another "player"?

Do you remember another little game called DIGIMON where you traded monsters? What if those monsters were just a representation of value? Do you remember being able to create said monster by insterting a CD into your drive and having an algorithm create one from the checksum/hash? Who's to stop you from creating monopoly money from a QR code?

Furthermore, with the Apple Game Center giving you all the tools (free API) for multiplayer games, what's to stop one talented coder from making an 'exchange game', or basically forex simulator? Desperate users could even buy fake bux (iTunes credits) in-app at a huge markup (30%+ for iTunes fees + risk of chargeback).

No, I'm not saying I'm making this right now (why would I ever admit that?), what I'm asking is, why isn't this avenue being tried by everyone else? Is the threat of eventually finding out and bashing it down too great?

Bruno's title gave me an idea. I am a stickler for quality in design as is clearly visible in my trolling of various natures last year. Albeit misplaced, my intentions were in the right direction: to bring higher standards to design and form in the bitcoin world. Typical bounties are a race to finish, like spec work, they potentially cheat everyone involved of the chance to learn and develop organically as a team. They are useful in many scenarios, but I wanted to present an idea for an alternative bounty system.

  • An initial rough object (be it an article, an equation, a graphic design, anything really) is presented in poor quality along with a wallet address containing a small bounty (let's say 0.01 BTC) held in escrow.
  • The following post is a revision of said object, done "better" than the previous, while paying double the previous bounty themselves (0.02 BTC).
  • The object revision is approved or denied by the OP. (Optionally, participants vote on it with voting power proportional to their bounty contribution) Upon approval, the contributor is added to the list of accepted escrow recipients. If the revision is declined, the bounty for the revisions will still increase, but the declined submitter will not receive a bounty.
  • This process is repeated until revisions are no longer remaining or a time limit is reached. This insures the best quality and the most shared ideas in an organic process.
  • The last rendition is awarded the full escrowed bounty with respect from all parties involved for their superior skills or judgement in the initial task.

Why bother with this alternative system?

  • The hones is on the craftsman to back his work with funds and not waste the time of the OP.
  • Great projects could be funded by the community instead of the OP. Contributors who merely want to donate have a chance to try their hand in the creative process.
  • The entire community can be involved in the learning process.

This can potentially cause a project to take longer to finish, but can also raise the awareness and skill level of each individual involved. Something that may be worth it in itself.

Cheers
70  Economy / Trading Discussion / September 2012 Bet Resolution on: February 02, 2013, 06:12:01 AM
Dear community,

Last fall (2012) a very public trolling that cost many people a great deal of money was perpetrated by myself, and it was not a very good trolling at that. Although the intention was for entertainment for a majority of users, I crossed a lot of lines and ended up both hurting people financially and causing people to think things of me I had not intended. For that I am truly ashamed for my behavior and have had a lot to think about in regards to my involvement in the bitcoin movement and what I can do differently. I lost a lot of 'friends' to my poor decisions and I'd like to make it up to them as well.

The following users participated in a bet with me that reached into amounts that are impossible to pay in this lifetime. Graciously, many of these users have presented a more realistic settlement and I have accepted. This thread is a matter of public record in regards to that settlement and the resolution of this situation in general and will be kept up to date by myself and forum admins.

In discussing this issue with Theymos, he advised me to make an additional thread to make sure that the members whom have ignored my messages to would have another chance to respond.

As you may have seen in this thread, I am currently trying to make amends for my awful behavior back in September. I have had a lot of time to think about my actions and have come to the conclusion that this is the only right thing to do. I have sent messages to every member here in attempts to make things right, but some have either not responded (yet), have me on ignore (for good reason), or were fake names used by people who had no intention of paying if they had in fact lost. Because I cannot rightfully say that I have tried contacting them without taking this extra step, I am creating this thread in hopes that the following users will read this and message me or at least respond to my message.

(To everyone else, my apologies for what seems like a whiny "Oh please forgive me I have sinned" spam thread. It's not what it looks like.)
72  Other / Off-topic / I'd like to ask for some help. on: January 16, 2013, 06:50:43 PM
As you know I've taken a leave from Bitcoin to focus on my life, and in doing so a lot of facts became clear to me about the last year of involvement in bitcoin. I wanted to share those with you and ask you for some advice as well.

The first thing I want to address is my work in the bitcoin community developing products, services and businesses with others. Being homeschooled and sheltered throughout my childhood, it had never occurred to me that I could truly just be one of the crowd, whether neutral or positive. I have always felt I was fighting against someone, somewhere to break free of something. This is what has given me such tremendous energy throughout my life and allowed me to always feel like I was racing someone to some goal. Throughout the year in bitcoin, I felt I was constantly in a race to create something no one else had created yet. It hadn't occurred to me to participate, ask questions, respect others for their knowledge, or even admit defeat on some topics. Looking back with a clear head, it is obvious I was interested in only three things: attention, get rich quick schemes, and entertaining myself. I may or may not have even suffered from aspergers (although I believe it was probably just social ignorance from working alone my whole life and never really being a part of anything until now).

I feel I have made some very trivial additions to the community, but most of them were "A for effort" types and I ended up with a negative sum. I'm certainly grateful for the experiences I have had though. I was completely unaware (and mostly still am) of any political, economical or philosophical ideas before coming here. I believe my biggest mistake was not taking time to learn the lessons that were right in front of me, and feeding the mentality that anyone who didn't automatically accept what I was doing must have been "wrong" and therefor not important. I've survived entirely on bitcoin for a whole year. I have been a part of some really interesting projects, and I've inspired a whole lot more. That said, I do not currently hold any stake in anything remotely interesting or useful to the bitcoin community as a whole, and that pains me when I look back at all the scattered efforts I mindlessly poured into project after ill-thought project. That is the first thing that has begun to change in my life. I am no longer looking for the hit-and-run get rich quick scheme, I am considering going to college and learning how to be better at the job that I enjoy doing, regardless of the pay involved, and am starting to realize the importance and international political implications of bitcoin.

That brings me to the next thing. My awareness of why bitcoin is so important and why it doesn't need any "clowns" like me. I cannot rightfully walk away from an event where I have caused damage and ignore it for the rest of my life. Nor can I rightfully explain it away or solve it easily. I won't lie, I've popped into reddit almost weekly to see what's been happening in bitcoin, and for once, when I wasn't doing the talking, it become clear why we actually need bitcoin in the first place. It gets a lot of flack for being a criminal currency, an "illegal" black market currency, and frankly I still wholeheartedly believe that SA goons have this community downpat as being one of the wackiest group of tinfoil spergers ever to exist, but that doesn't change the fact that bitcoin itself is amazing. And it hurts that I didn't realize that until after pulling a stunt that caused everyone to think I hate bitcoin and want to hurt it.

That brings me to the final point. I initially intended to teach the community a lesson about trust, I did not expect anyone to really take the bets and thus I did not expect to keep any profits. As the bets grew though, I was tempted with greed and I fell into a trap. I flipped back and forth between playing a prank (as it was intended) and actually trying to solve my financial situation (which was becoming dire). I did truly believe that Pirate was going to pay back and I fell for it. I also believe that I intended to pay anyone I lost when it was around 1000 BTC, but as I flip-flopped on my own reasoning and was enjoying the entertainment/trolling so much, I lost control and couldn't stop myself. The attention was just too entertaining and now I will go down in history as the retard who went full retard on the forums-- but I will not go down in history as the guy who ran away from his responsibilities. During the betting process, I hadn't considered people would actually lose money (I seldom plan ahead) and it hadn't occurred to me until shortly after the bet was over that I had actually cost people money/opportunity in large amounts. This depressed me a lot. I won't lie, I cried exactly once, but not at the lost money (I have never had much respect for money), but in reading the many people whom I never even knew knew I existed say so many things about how they actually liked me before I went insane. That killed.

I could easily disappear and continue working behind the scenes, but I don't think that's what I ever wanted, and it's not what anyone else deserves. I'd like to ask some advice on how to make things right. I'm not coming here to get sympathy, and I expect many people will want to start an argument with me, but I can't let it end like this. I obviously don't have millions of dollars in bitcoins to dish out, and I'm also not the inherently dishonest type to try and look for schemes to buy my own debt back at a reduced price. Basically, I just want to know what my options are. I'd like everyone who I have wronged to personally email me at jindq1@gmail.com and explain their story. I want to personally take care of my situation with that person and do my best to make things right, no matter how long it takes.

I know I said I was "leaving", and in a sense, I have. But 2013 is a year for work and self reflection, and I don't think ignoring people, running from problems and hiding behind trolling suits me anymore.

Please help me help myself, and let me start by making things right with those I have wronged.

M.

73  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / My response to the community on: September 10, 2012, 07:48:22 AM
In hindsight, I no longer see this bet as being funny and I think it was in horrible taste. The community members who were my friends who are standing up against this are right in doing so I and I have no place in the bitcoin community as I clearly don't take it as seriously as everyone else. I am happy to have learned so much from Bitcoin and I'm glad to have shared in many experiences as well, but I cannot discount the claims that I have some issues with manicism as there is no other explanation for my often irrational behavior. I'll be seriously looking at my life and exiting from the community with my sincerest apologies.

Mihai Alisie will be speaking for the Bitcoin Magazine at the London conference. I am in the process of exiting the company completely equity and all in addition to already having resigned as a director and Editor in Chief, as it seems the right thing to do for the future of the magazine.

Ellet's IP is being handed over to a more capable party and I will be exiting any involvement with it.

DCAO is being dismembered and the existing heads will start another organization a bit more seriously toned.

I will not be involved in any businesses in this community any longer. It is clear my immaturity is hurting the community more than I am helping it, and the position I have been in has only resulted in hurting myself and those around me. I'm glad to see that many people did get my joke, but I ask that they not defend me as even I see now that it was crossing all sorts of lines that should never have been crossed and I have absolutely no excuse for it.

I'm sorry I let so many people down that I never even realized actually cared and I hope I can somehow serve as an example of what not to do so that all of this was not a complete waste.

I will now leave how I came.

76  Economy / Service Discussion / If I win the 10,000BTC, I have an idea for what to do with the money... on: August 25, 2012, 05:02:59 AM
I am not making any promises yet, just gauging interests, but it occurred to me the other day that the best thing I could do help the Bitcoin community, my career, and Bitcoin Magazine's exposure all in one go would be to use some of my winnings to print 50,000+ issues of the Bitcoin Magazine and mail them to everyone on the forums (and off, if anyone asked).

I think people are afraid of purchasing the magazine because of the original late issue (in fact, there are some people who ordered -recently- who are still waiting because we -just- got a large 4,000 issue shipment in Romania and are only beginning to disperse them), but I am confident that we'll make it up over time with consistent issues (we've already printed September's issue, so it should be fine from here on out). I think Bitcoin Magazine is important to the community and that once people see the high quality, especially with recent issues, they are going to fall in love with it.

So why wouldn't I just do it without even asking? Because a few months ago one customer asked us if we have a digital release because they didn't want to ever give out their address. I thought this was -really- odd considering it's unlawful for us to share our records with anyone else, but I guess to each his own.

So here's the question...

If I win the 10,000BTC bet and I pay for 50,000 issues of the Bitcoin Magazine to be printed and shipped, would you accept one?

77  Economy / Gambling / I'm offering 100% ROI to anyone who thinks I don't have 1,000BTC to pay out. on: August 24, 2012, 09:06:35 PM
That's right! There are now literally hundreds of people who have missed the entire point of the Pirate bet (Don't accuse people. harass them, and pretend you know what you're talking about) and have now begun to harass me, thinking I don't have even 1,000BTC and that I'm -only- risking my forum account. That's just ignorant.

So it seems I have to impose another FUD tax on the community. I will prove I have over 1,000BTC freely available to me. If you do not believe this will happen, place your bets here in the following format:

Code:
20BTC

Optional comment

I will be accepting up to 100BTC in bets. When the 100BTC is reached, I will prove that I have over 1,000BTC to my person and you will lose the bet. If I cannot, then the entire community would know if I was going to scam them in this bet thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=103059

79  Economy / Service Discussion / Discussion about 10,000BTC Bet (Official) on: August 24, 2012, 05:35:20 AM
I locked the actual bet thread here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=101751.0) because all 10,000BTC available to me have been bet in the wager as seen here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ajtx05YrHtIydFVHcGxLOExTbnhqajJLZmlSZUNtM3c#gid=0).

This thread is merely for trolls to try and spread FUD ("He doesn't have the money!", "He's colluding with pirate!", "He's a woman in a man's body!", etc) but also to discuss the current events because  I will now be on the road and less access to a computer (iPhone only). I'd like things organized for that reason and so I am creating this thread.

To start things off, when I was on IRC we played a little game of 20 questions to the detractors because they were so sure of themselves (sound familiar? didn't we just have a bet for that reason?? Roll Eyes) but it's actually a good way for the community to keep a record of my statements so that I can just give idiot trolls a link to what I said instead of repeating myself 10000 times a day (one time for each bitcoin!).

If you want to play the game (which you don't have to, feel free to comment as you may), simply post your question in the following format:

Code:
#1
Are you as shitty of a singer as you sound in your dumb youtube videos?

I promise I will answer any and all questions here truthfully, unless of course the involve revealing personal information (my home address, cell phone number, penis size, anus size, quantity of balls, etc). As only 20 questions are allowed, please mind previous poster's question # and increment yours accordingly. Any duplicate # used will be ignored completely.

Cheers

mods could just dump all the pirate threads there for those that care Smiley

Pretty soon here there will only be one thread that anyone will post in.

The "Matthew wins 10,000BTC!" thread.
