1  Other / Meta / can this be fixed? on: March 25, 2025, 02:33:37 PM
so I replied this post made by @ _act earlier about the user whose name was changed. to  notocacus....( I don't want to mention his previous username for some reasons I think should be left unsaid)..

alot of users apply for change in their names for certain reasons including privacy or some personal reasons relating to the forum, so I guess.. but then it was easier for me to know which username had previously been on the account through their previously quoted post history.
example...
Thank you, Welsh. I still search to find it.
You are one of the first users commented about the second rank system (with activity requirements).

my question is that if for instance the user was trying to hide himself on the forum due to privacy reasons, can't his post history also be updated aswell, so he can be completely untraceable? like I mean when you check his post history, you will find all his old post updated to his new username on the forum software. this way, only those who he chooses to know of his presence would be aware of him. is this possible?
2  Local / Nigeria (Naija) / Protecting Your Digital Assets: Why You Should Take Control of Your Cryptocurren on: February 10, 2025, 10:06:14 AM
As cryptocurrency users, we've all heard horror stories about exchanges being hacked or shut down, resulting in lost funds. Yet, many of us still store our coins on exchange accounts, putting our digital assets at risk.Storing your cryptocurrency on an exchange can be convenient, but it's not worth the risk. Exchanges are vulnerable to hacking, and even if you think your coins are safe, you're still trusting a third party to secure your assets.

In contrast, non-custodial wallets offer a much higher level of security and control. By storing your coins offline and managing your own private keys, you can ensure that your digital assets are truly yours.

So, why do so many of people still rely on exchanges? Is it convenience? Lack of knowledge? Or something else? I've noticed this as a common mistake among many cryptocurrency users, both on and off this forum. Despite some claiming to store their coins offline in non-custodial wallets, most users still store their coins on exchange accounts. I strongly believe this is a mistake.

Last year, our government targeted exchanges operating in the country, causing sudden shutdowns without warning. Many users lost their coins as a result.

Having your own wallet is safer and more secure. You control your coins and their safety. Writing down your seed phrase and storing it securely isn't difficult.Unfortunately, some users store their seed phrases in their Gmail accounts, believing it's safer. However, hackers can access email accounts, and it's not a secure storage solution. There are many safe and reliable wallets available. I recommend using them and spreading the word about the dangers of storing coins on exchanges and keeping keys online.

If you're considering storing your coins online, add a passphrase to your wallet. Choose a unique phrase, not a common word or phrase found online, it can even be a word in your local dialect. This will add an extra layer of security.Remember, securing your coins is the most important. We all know how challenging times are in our country. Stay safe and protect your assets.
3  Economy / Economics / $100 Million for a First-Class Degree? on: December 30, 2024, 08:36:29 PM
The title says it all. "$100 Million for a First-Class Degree?" This sparked a heated discussion in one of my social groups today and I wanted to hear from people worldwide.

A student was asked if she'd trade a first class degree for $100 million. Her confident response was surprising. she chose the degree, believing it would offer more than the money. Is she right? Considering the current global economy and my country country for instance with a struggling economic situation, won't it be better to take the money? A good job is often the key to earning a similar amount over a lifetime. But when there's high rate of unemployment and most jobs requires an experienced graduate with certain amount of levels do you think it's better to still go for the first class degree?

While a first-class degree can attract attention from scholars on your field of study, will it put food on the table? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

5  Economy / Exchanges / A honest question about non kyc exchange on: September 25, 2024, 09:51:17 AM
I made a reply here No KYC crypto exchange questions

yesterday, about the kyc and non kyc exchanges. Yes we learn every day. The op asked a question that I myself answered but then I felt like my reply was a bit not certain for some reasons. I used my own analogy to reply him because, if an exchange is non kyc, it means that they literally will be decentralized and they are not being controlled by the government or follow by government rules. While the opposite for a kyc exchange... But then my reply to this question, which the op asked

Since it's a non kyc exchanges you would actually have control over your keys. The exchange provides you,  your own private key and a wallet you can store your funds in their platform. So even if there's a shut down, you might be able to get your funds out.

as you can see above. I used the word MIGHT as I wasn't totally sure of something i havent tried before. So my question here is that, will you be given private keys to your wallet in a non kyc exchange? And if yes, will I be able to import those keys into a standard wallets. In case where the exchange has issues or shut down? I'm just trying to clear my doubts here so please if you won't help with a good reply just don't.. thanks

6  Other / Beginners & Help / Cloud wallets, a recipe for disaster. on: September 15, 2024, 05:57:26 AM
I've been wanting to raised this issue for some time now, but have been busy off forum.

I remember when Ledger announced a cloud recovery system for their hardware wallets in 2023. This feature allowed users to store their keys on remote servers. Many Bitcoiners and Ledger users were unhappy and raised concerns about safety. As a result, they avoided using Ledger wallets. But that was just the start.

Since then, more wallet companies have adopted cloud storage, thinking it's a better way to protect users' assets. They store users' keys on cloud servers, so users don't need to back them up. But isn't this idea reckless? When we look closely at cloud systems like Google, we see that user data has been compromised many times. Hackers constantly try to access people's data, so why trust these wallets to store our funds in the cloud? The wallet providers think it's a good idea and claim to trust the cloud companies with our data, but that's even worse.

Quote
We have implemented this approach while ensuring that these integrated companies cannot access your personal details or seed phrases. If you lose access to your Google or Apple account, please follow their account recovery process.

Passkeys are linked to iCloud or Google accounts; users can recover their wallets as long as they have access to these accounts. Note; Apple and Google does NOT have access to details about your wallet or your private keys.

https://trustwallet.com/fr/blog/security-recoverability-of-smart-wallets

Do you call that security? Lol.. We should get to do our research first before complicating things for our selfs. The worst case scenario is that most crypto user don't see anything wrong about this, they even call it a good idea. To me, this is pure laziness. I see nothing good about this and it's kind crazy, if one cannot take the safety of his own funds into his hands. Why use third parties when you can just get a paper and write your seed out, store them in a good place so you don't get to think about someone moving out your funds. Yes it might seem more like all that isn't possible, but then you are just gambling your funds safety.  Here's why you should rethink your decisions about such offers from wallets:

1. Data breaches: in the past and still present, hackers have compromised user data in various cloud storage services.
2. Third party control: Relying on cloud providers like Google or other cloud providers, means trusting them with your sensitive information.
3. Single point of failure: If your cloud account is compromised or locked, you may lose access to your funds.

Use non-custodial standard wallets system, avoid wallets that offer clouds.
7  Local / Nigeria (Naija) / Payments wey dey Silent on: July 22, 2024, 03:54:26 PM
Original post: Silent payments

Author: witcher_sense

Intro

for dis post, i go like talk about one correct thing wey Ruben Somsen talk about wey e call "Silent payments," and dis one na way to tay improve privacy matter wey go make payments between two people dem for Blockchain dey less transparent for person wey dey look am from outside. e dey more about "stealth addresses" and "codes wey dem fit reuse tay pay" and still dey try solve d same problem but for another correct way.

watin d idea just dey about

d idea go just dey like dis:user A go post watin dem go tay dey know say na e be dat (normal e go be e public key), and user B go add e private key join d key wey A don post and come create one unique address wey e go be say na only A go fit spend from. User C go fit still send money give user A e go need to add e own private key with one of d address of A come still create another address wey dey unique.User A go know say both d B and C don send am money, but B and C no go know who send and money. so dis one go come make user A fit receive payments with address wey dey completely delinked with only one address wey dey public.

how e tay dey work

make we say for example Bob wan send payment we dey silent give Alice.

1) Alice go first create one identifier wey dem go tay dey know say na she be dat. (e fit public key) wey dey use elliptic curve maths wey dey standard:

 A = a*G, where

A - na Alice public key (one point wey dey elliptic curve),
a - na Alice private key (any random number wey e suppose no tell person),and
G - na e be d generator point (point wey dey predefined for elliptic curve).

2) Alice don post d identifier A for public so dat Bob (and other people dem e.g Carol) go fit know where to send dem payments.

3) Bob go come select one of d inputs wey e dey In control of and still get public key for inside.

B = b*G, where

B - na Bob key wey dey public (one point for elliptic curve),
b - na Bob key we dey private (any number wey dey random but na only Bob go know am), and
G - na e be d generator point.

4) Bob go carry Alice key wey dey public A come create one new key wey dey public with dis formula:

A' = hash(b*A)*G + A, where

A' - na key wey dey public and na e dem go dey tay dey pay Bob

5) Bob go run one payment give Alice, come create one output wey go dey related with public key A' wey dem don first create.

6) as e be say b*A = b*a*G = a*b*G = a*B, Alice go fit recreate d same key A' wey dey public with her own key a wey dey private with dis formula:

A' = (hash(a*B) + a)*G, where

hash(a*B) + a - na d new Alice  private key wey allow Alice fit spend her money from d output wey dey related to d public key A'.

d only problem now be say Alice go need to know Bob key wey dey public B to tay notice say she send payment. na why she go need to come dey rescan d Blockchain to tay know which public key she go fit add join her own private keya to recreate d Bitcoin address wey don first dey.

watin make dis method good well well:

1)d person wey dey send no need to talk with d person wey wan receive payments. if person wan send, he go only need to create one address from d silent public key wey d receiver don give.

2) Silent payment dey use blockspace well well since d transaction sef no need to dey announced like d BIP47. dat one mean say one transaction dey equal to one payment, wey make sense if na once  dem wan use am donate.

3) dem no dey fit differentiate Silent transactions from normal transactions (e.g, OP_RETURN outputs no dey to share ephemeral public key like case of "Stealth addresses"), dat wan means say with dem, e dey possible for people to hide inside crowd. d anonymity set na d whole Blockchain.

4) address wey dem create from d original silent key we dey public dey always dey deterministic and dey unique becos each sender go fit use e own unique key tay tweak d silent public key wey d receiver de use.

5) Silent payments dey motivate d receiver wey get d funds to always run dem own Bitcoin full node, dis one go come make d network dey even more decentralized.

6) no body apart from d person wey send d funds and d person wey receive am go know say d payment even happen.

7) silent payments dey improve d wey Bitcoin transaction dey fit dey flexible.

why dis method no good:

1) d thing wey make dis technique no good at all na e be d high cost wey dem dey tay approve am. as e be say d person wey dey receive d payment no know d Bitcoin address wey e go fit spend with d private key wey e get, he go need to come dey check all d input for d transaction, even calculate and check for public key wey resemble.

2) if sender go fit use d same address again. As sender get many inputs wey dey share d same public key, each of d inputs go last last make d same address wey dem calculate. to reuse d same address na watin dem dey see as bad practice of privacy and we go need avoid am well well. we fit commot dis one if we add extra information inside d computational process but go come create even more stress especially for light clients. also, d person wey dey send fit spend all d input for one transaction, but dis go come show d ownership and come destroy dem privacy.

8  Local / Nigeria (Naija) / Watin go happen when all exchanges finally remove Nigeria p2p from Dem app? on: July 19, 2024, 06:09:51 PM
Well as Una see d question for the title, I don dey ask myself dis question for a long time now. That time when binance first do Dem own, e no really matter as we still get many other options wey full ground to use run p2p. But now just few na e remain (bybit) Huh Sha dis one no supposed be something wey we as forum members go fear like that as normal normal, update go drop for here. But then, what about our naija people out there? Especially those new ones wey don rush go dey buy crypto because of all these small small airdrop wey just full every where. Dem fit no get idea on how to convert Dem money and come dey panic any how. I dey here say telegram get p2p. But then how do we trust those merchant wey dey there?

10  Other / Meta / Request that the BestChange thread be locked already. on: May 20, 2024, 12:00:31 PM
I don't know if anyone has observed this, but recently the BestChange signature campaign had just ended. And everyone paid their respect by congratulating the campaign for lasting over 4 years here on the forum.  Yes alot of us will miss their campaign, but it has ended and we should let go and hope they bring a new campaign from their management. I guess it's time to lock their signature thread. I was reading through the thread recently, and a lot of people have now turned it into a merit fishing thread, where they write some good words or something nice(shit post)just to receive a merit award from the op @ BestChange. I'm not saying it's wrong though, but the thread should be locked now to avoid merit hunters turning the thread into something else.
11  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Blockchain synchronizing issue.... on: May 01, 2024, 05:08:16 AM
I wanted to ask this question yesterday, but was busy. I know that once a wallet finishes synchronizing with the Blockchain, it's supposed to display all funds related to that a particular key(seed). However, I recently encountered a different issue. My old wallet, which I used for signature campaigns, was created using Mycelium. Mycelium creates an HD wallet. It hadn't given me any issues until last week when I tried to move the piled up coins to my other wallet. Due to the high cost of fees, I had to wait a bit, which I did. Yesterday, when I was about to move the coins, I noticed that the mempool fee was different from that of Mycelium. Mycelium doesn't give the option to adjust fee. So, I decided to import the seed into my Blue wallet.

To my surprise, the total sum of coins I found on Blue wallet was different from that on Mycelium, with about $70 short. I didn't understand what happened, so I cleared the app and reimported the seed again. It finished synchronizing and showed the same balance. so I thought for a while and used my mobile Electrum to import the same seed. But Electrum, after synchronizing, displayed the same balance as that of Blue wallet. So, I couldn't really understand what was happening.

my question here,  is it possible for different wallet apps to display different balances? I know I've seen this question before on some other thread but can't seem to find it. Also, on  HD wallets, how do I know the parent address? Is it the first address created by the wallet? Because if I could have just used the parent address to check for the total balance using Blockchain explorers, but I couldn't find it. Though I had to move the coins using Mycelium at the end and created a new wallet, I want to understand what happened. Could someone explain?

13  Other / Beginners & Help / Always do your own research (DYR) on: April 13, 2024, 08:06:25 PM

I found this image on WhatsApp and wanted to share it here as a message for everyone in our forum. In the crypto world, prices can change a lot especially during Bear season. Even though you might have the same amount of coins their value in the market may reduce drastically. This can be scary especially for newcomers who might not understand how it all works. In the image above ,someone introduced a newbie to crypto without explaining the risks or advising them to do research first. Now the newbie is upset and asking for his money back.
Something we should learn from this is that before investing in anything, it's important to do your own research and understand how it and the market works. If you introduce someone to crypto, make sure they know about the risks of volatility.

Theres also a risk of being blamed or even arrested if someone claims you lost their money through investing. This could lead to accusations of scams.
Incidents like this can give reputable coins like Bitcoin a bad reputation, as people might spread misinformation about them being scams. Let's be careful about how we introduce others to crypto investing.

Since Binance removed peer-to-peer (p2p) trading, many Nigerians have switched to other exchanges that still support it. Binance has been the go-to exchange for us Nigerians for a long time. However, when exploring new p2p exchanges, some have different trading patterns and fewer traders, increasing the risk of scams.

Some people might consider using local trading, but local traders may be even riskier than those on other exchanges because there's no escrow system like with p2p. Recently, a friend of mine was scammed while trying to use a local exchange. He wanted to swap some USDT to Naira and sent money to the provided address. Even though his wallet showed the transaction as confirmed, the exchange kept claiming they hadn't received the funds. Later, they admitted to giving him the wrong address and stopped responding to him.
This situation shows that during times like these, more thieves and criminals may try to take advantage by posing as local exchanges. Even if you consider using a local exchange, make sure it's one you're familiar with. Many of these exchanges are run by individuals who are only interested in stealing, even from their own people.

Local exchanges lack the security measures and oversight of established exchanges.they may not have enough liquidity or financial stability, increasing the risk of losing funds. Dealing with local exchanges also makes resolving disputes or recovering lost funds challenging due to their lack of transparency and accountability.it's generally safer to use reputable, regulated exchanges with a proven track record of security and reliability to avoid exposing oneself to significant risks.
17  Other / Archival / Shout-Outs!!! To Reputable Members in Your Merit History on: February 28, 2024, 01:26:28 AM
Hello fellow Bitcoiners, we are excited to see Bitcoins sudden skyrocket to 57k in less than 24hours. It's quite imaginable what we should be expecting after the halving.

That been said, we all know how exciting it is when we receive merits here on the forum( I don't know about legendary or members above 1k merits but for me  Grin). Merit is meant to appreciate a user who contributes greatly to the community. The best part in receiving merit, is when you earn them from top reputable or most recognized BitcoinTalk members. Like that feeling of being seen or noticed by great men and women or Bitcoiners to be precise. ( You can also be noticed for breaking the rules as well). Roll Eyes

Well, this thread is meant to be for fun. I want those members like me( don't be shy) who gets excited receiving merits from reputable members to give a shout out to the most recognized members of the forum on your merit history. also it will make more sense to mention a name of that member you so desire to earn merits from on the forum. And of cause, you have to work towards that by contributing quality to the forum.
Like I said before, this thread is meant for fun, not meant to complete you week quota. so please let's be moderate. You can mention up to 2 members on each category. I will drop mine to get the fun started.
If you don't mind and you are interested, you may want to use this format to make it organized.

20  Local / Nigeria (Naija) / [V1]1miau Campaign for quality post [MERIT THREAD] on: February 09, 2024, 12:51:16 PM
With the recent fight for quality posts creation in our local board, we have seen little improvements from our local board members.i have thought  of so many ways to help increase the creation of good quality posts on our naija board and thanks to @Igebotz thread, he actually did help a lot. Before now, I had created this postA CAMPAIGN TO IMPROVE QUALITY POSTS FOR LOCAL BOARD which was originally a campaign started by 1miau. And to make sure this campaign work it's purpose, I discussed with @1miau over a pm and he agreed to help reward quality posts here on our naija board on a weekly basis. This was because if we had good post rewarded more often then maybe our low quality posters will get into competition and start posting good quality threads.

This thread will be moderated by myself, and each week, I will compile a list of high-quality posts from our local board. These posts will then be merited by me. While I initially considered allowing submissions, I want to avoid overcrowding and the submission of low-quality posts solely for the sake of receiving merit. This campaign aims to reward quality posts, not to serve as a platform for fishing merit.

Currently @1miau the sponsor, is less available due to his stated busy schedule, recently. After discussing this with him, he encouraged me to continue this thread, assuring that he will evaluate and support when he comes online. Therefore, the merit distribution will be low, as I prioritize selecting the best posts. You are also welcome to assist in any way you can by meriting the selected good posts each week, making this campaign more engaging for everyone.

Here's the format of which I will be selecting for now.
1. Per Week on Sundays, a number of good quality post will be selected
2. Only post or reply that were useful or helped and brought about quality discussions will be selected

Quote
Rules
1.Don't pm me to review or add your post to the list
2.Don't post unnecessary discussions on this thread as they will be deleted
3. Posts with considerable amounts of merits may not be rewarded
4. I will skip any week, I find no good quality post and more of low quality posts.
