61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Wow. Stanford University publishes excelent description of the bitcoin network on: February 19, 2014, 05:27:43 PM
I thought they did a great job of explaining the ledger based system.

http://news.stanford.edu/news/2014/february/bitcoin-athey-srinivasan-021814.html

A SAMPLE:
"Athey: The Bitcoin system has at its core a secure public ledger. An entry on the ledger is not an IOU from a bank, like your bank account balance is. Rather, the ledger entry is the definition of ownership of a bitcoin. Within the Bitcoin protocol, one individual can send bitcoins to another without any middlemen or risk … that is a very powerful concept."
62  Economy / Economics / What percentage of your investment holdings should be in bitcoin? on: November 26, 2013, 05:11:10 PM
With the dramatic rise in bitcoin price I worry about the size of my BTC holdings relative to my overall portfolio. As much as I love bitcoin, it is still a social experiment. I am trying to keep diversifying my assets as a hedge. Anyone else thinking about this? Below is the mix I'm trying to acheive.

Bitcoin..............................%30
Cash in USD and EUR.......%20
Real estate.......................%20
Investment vehicles.........%20
Precious metals...............%7
Fine art.............................%3

64  Economy / Service Discussion / Questions about CampBX on: October 16, 2013, 02:25:30 PM
I'm on the lookout for a new exchange. Anyone here use CampBX? If so, how do you like it? I'm looking for a place that:
  • 1. uses money orders / bank transfers. I don't mind identity checks, but I would not like to wait 30+ days for an inefficient system.
  • 2. Is based in the USA, with sufficient volume.
I'm also open to other suggestions.
65  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / SQ1 TV doccumentary on Bitcoin (trailer) on: September 26, 2013, 01:56:46 PM
I noticed a trailer has been posted by square one telivision. They are(were?) working on a documentary about bitcoin. The trailer is linked below.

66  Bitcoin / Meetups / Anyone meeting in NYC (Manhattan) Oct. 26-27? on: September 24, 2013, 02:11:51 PM
I'm going to be in Manhattan that weekend. If I have a chance, I might do something bitcoin related. Anyone going to be around then?
67  Economy / Goods / Building an agriculture based economy -Gauging Interest in a CSA cookbook- on: June 03, 2013, 05:43:16 PM
Hi all,
My wife has been the project manager and editor on a cookbook project for our local community supported agriculture group. I don't really cook, but apparently it is very good. She is all done, but I am now helping the organization look into including bitcoin as a payment option (as a volunteer). Eventually we hope to have farm shares produced and sold within the bitcoin economy.

The first step will be to offer the cookbook for bitcoin. I am interested in the likelihood of you buying if bitcoin were an option. You are not committing to anything, but I am more interested in people who realistically may buy cookbooks.

Here is the website: http://www.csacoalition.org/

The book is Farm-Fresh and Fast

Cheers,
Rich

68  Local / Marketplace (India) / who is between Chennai and Bangalor? on: May 16, 2013, 03:47:22 PM
I think I will be in India next winter. It would be fun to meet some bitcoin peers there. I am not sure what town I will be in, but it is between Chennai and Bangalor. Anyone there? Or any recommendations for things to see?
69  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-04-30 BBC America - News segment on bitcoin on: May 01, 2013, 02:07:56 PM
BBC aired a very positive story about bitcoin on their BBC America news show. It was about two mins. long and gave a primer on what bitcoins are and why they are gaining popularity. I could not find a link to the piece. If I do I will update this thread.
The only part I remember was the anchor (I think it was Katty Kay) saying, "Huh, bitcoins. Maybe I should get some?"
70  Other / Off-topic / Frontline covers the 401k gamble - everyone with a 401k should see this on: April 24, 2013, 02:13:36 PM
Frontline on PBS is truly one of the best at investigative journalism shows ever. Last night they aired an episode titled "The retirement gamble". It was about what a bad deal the 401k system is. Very eye opening. If you thought you were retiring before 80, then I hope you have your money in an index fund and not a 401k. America is about to retire into poverty.
If you like conspiracies then here is a chance to see a real one. You can stream it below.

71  Other / Off-topic / What types of pressure cookers should be banned? on: April 17, 2013, 07:13:04 PM
Now that we know that pressure cookers are nothing more than murderous tools of the deranged terrorists, Americans will need to have them seized for their own good. Sure some nut-jobs are going to try to make the case that these dangerous weapons can be used for "recreational cooking". But that is obvious trolling.
I suppose cops and the military could still have them because no cop or solider ever hurt any innocent person. However any so-called "cookware" with the following characteristics must be banned. As a person who knows nothing about cookware I demand it!

Cookware should be banned if it:

-is high capacity
-is black and/or menacing looking
-is imported from another country
-is bought by anyone other than a professional chef

If we at least had background checks for pressure cookers (a.k.a. death pots) then none of this would have happened. The Boston bomber would have been like "Dang, I guess I give up."

This is what gun ban arguments look like to me.

73  Bitcoin / Legal / Question about customs and bitcoin on: April 04, 2013, 05:47:53 PM
I travel internationally a lot. I know that if I cross a border with $10k or more that I must declare it. But what about my bitcoins? I have a smartphone account that allows me to spend my coins, and some might say that I possess those coins on my phone. I know this  is technically incorrect. However, what would customs say?
The fact is I could march right out of the airport and buy a Land Rover with my coins. Does this mean that I brought a store of wealth into the country? If you think yes or no, please provide a legal basis for your thinking.

76  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What is valuable about a bitcoin? on: March 06, 2013, 04:17:18 AM
A lot is focused right now on the price of bitcoins, but what is their value in your mind?
For me it's mostly utility and privacy. I like how it can be used worldwide and trust the decentralized and open source nature of bitcoin.  I think that is a powerful idea and worth owning a chunk of. I'll let the market decide what the price should be. It doesn't change the properties I like about bitcoin.

What, if anything, do you see of value in bitcoin?
77  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin showing up on e-commerce sites. What have you seen? on: February 26, 2013, 08:37:49 PM
Lately I have been finding bitcoin sales at more traditional sales websites. Look at gunbroker.com for example.

Do you have any other examples?

79  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Time to upgrade your security on: January 23, 2013, 06:06:27 PM
Prices are up again and risk should also be rising. For those who remember the crash from last year, these are scary times. Many users use the same standard of protection for their BTC as their face book account. Since bitcoins are money, and big money brings out the serious criminals, you will need o be prepared for a surge in hacktivity.

There are lots of threads here about keeping your bitwealth safe, you can choose for yourself. But why not make today the day you back up your wallet and clean out any scraps of old wallets. Or change your password from "god" to something robust.

Just sayin.
80  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Will Ubuntu for smartphones explode Bitcoin? on: January 04, 2013, 03:38:12 PM
I just saw the announcement about Ubuntu 2013 for smartphones. It is epic and I'm pee-in-my-pants excited to get one! There is also a real Bitcoin connection here. We should make a push to keep as many bitcoin app options available in the repositories as we can. It would be easy and *secure to use BTC on a native Linux phone, and being open source it could expose many new people to the currency.
