New Bill Would Require Declaration of Digital Currency Holdings when Entering U.S.

So then it would seem... if/when a crypto currency begins trading with USD, this constitutes a positive growth step? I would think you might even say it more "legitimizes" the currency?

Some will probably make that argument, and you and I may see that potential upside. That's almost certainly not the intent of the legislation, however. The requirement to disclose digital currency holdings at all points of entry just seems designed to stigmatize crypto and further the "it's for criminals and terrorists" narrative. I've never entered the U.S. from abroad and had anyone ask me to declare the value of my bank account holdings - and those funds are even easier for me to access electronically than any of my digital currency. I suspect that those behind this legislation understand that, and yet they've still focused on crypto rather than more common forms of electronic money.

I've probably said too much. Don't want to give them any ideas...

... at least, not until they start paying me consultant fees.

Frankly we have been so busy, we did not keep up with the news. But what Sen. Chuck Grassley is proposing is quite alarming. It almost seems like every time our industry gained some ground there is a big push back. Read on and decide for yourself.

We saw something like this coming and decided against launching a DNotes ICO because of our concern on possibility that SEC may consider the issuance of tokens as a sale of securities. We have also stayed away from anonymity and ‘zero knowledge” transaction”.  But this is beyond our worst-case scenario. Personally, I highly doubt that it will pass into law in its current form. Sadly, it shows great ignorance on that part of our law makers. We are seeing the greatest technology revolution since the internet and yet some idiots are all-out squander it. This will not make America great again!

Proposed Legislation Would Combat Terrorist Financing, Money Laundering

By John Kelly, Thad McBride, Eli Richardson & Cheryl Palmeri on June 8, 2017

POSTED IN INTERNATIONAL TRADE, SANCTIONS (OFAC)
•   Proposed legislation targets current gaps in U.S. financial crime law and enforcement
•   Bi-partisan Senate legislation would likely expand compliance obligations for banks and others in financial services industry
•   Proposed legislation is in line with U.S. and international efforts to fight terrorism and trafficking through economic sanctions and anti-money laundering (AML) rules
On May 25, 2017, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) introduced the “Combating Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, and Counterfeiting Act of 2017” (the “Act”).  The full text of the bill is available here.

......................................

ZeroHedge made the negative implications to our industry a little to understand:

You Won't Believe This Stupid New Law Against Cash And Bitcoin

This one is almost too ridiculous to believe.
Recently a new bill was introduced on the floor of the US Senate entitled, pleasantly,
You can probably already guess its contents.
Cash is evil.

Bitcoin is evil.

Now they’ve gone so far to include prepaid mobile phones, retail gift vouchers, or even electronic coupons. Evil, evil, and evil.
These people are certifiably insane.
Among the bill’s sweeping provisions, the government aims to greatly extend its authority to seize your assets through “Civil Asset Forfeiture”.
Civil Asset Forfeiture rules allow the government to take whatever they want from you, without a trial or any due process.
This new bill adds a laundry list of offenses for which they can legally seize your assets… all of which pertain to money laundering and other financial crimes.
Here’s the thing, though: they’ve also vastly expanded on the definition of such ‘financial crimes’, including failure to fill out a form if you happen to be transporting more than $10,000 worth of ‘monetary instruments’.

Have too much cash? You’d better tell the government.
If not, they’re authorizing themselves in this bill to seize not just the money you didn’t report, but ALL of your assets and bank accounts.
They even go so far as to specifically name “safety deposit boxes” among the various assets that they can seize if you don’t fill out the form.
(Yet another reason to consider storing cash, gold, and silver in an overseas safety deposit box.)
This is unbelievable on so many levels.

It’s crazy to begin with that these people are so consumed by the fact that someone has $10,000 in cash.
But it’s even crazier that they’re threatening to take EVERYTHING that you own merely for not filling out a piece of paper, without any due process whatsoever.
Oh, and on top of civil asset forfeiture penalties, there are also criminal penalties.

Right now according to current law they can imprison you for up to FIVE YEARS for not filling out the form. Five years.
But apparently that doesn’t go far enough to protect us against evil men in caves.

So this bill aims to double the criminal penalty to TEN years in prison.

And if that weren’t enough, this bill also gives them with new authority to engage in surveillance and wiretapping (including phone, email, etc.) if they have even a hint of suspicion that you might be transporting excess ‘monetary instruments’.

Usually wiretapping authority is reserved for major crimes like kidnapping, human trafficking, felony fraud, etc.
Now we can add cash to that list.

It’s not just government spy agencies to worry about, either.
Banks in the US are already unpaid government spies, required by law to fill out suspicious activity reports on their customers.
Then Congress started expanding those requirements to include other businesses and industries that might come into contact with cash.
Stock brokers. Casinos. Currency exchanges. Precious metals dealers. Pawnbrokers. The Post Office.

According to the law (section 5312 of US Code Title 31), those industries are also required to spy on their customers for the government.
But under this new bill, they want to forcibly recruit even more unpaid spies, including any business which issues or redeems ANYTHING that’s prepaid.
Prepaid credit cards. Prepaid phones. Prepaid retail gift cards. Prepaid coupons.

Yeah,  I feel like I need to apologize for that. Grassley represents my state, and is definitely past his sell-by date. He's like far too many of our representatives these days: operating with an understanding of the world that is all but obsolete, and way over his head when it comes to grappling with issues involving new technologies and other innovations. I like the guy personally and think that he's a decent human being, but he's simply operating out of his league when it comes to these issues.

Not that he's alone, mind you. The capital is filled with people who are woefully unqualified to deal with this rapidly-changing world.

With Crypto Trading Volumes Up, Coinbase Stumbles Again

https://dcebrief.com/with-crypto-trading-volumes-up-coinbase-stumbles-again/

Yes they stumbled but, they did not cause it. I basically watched the whole thing go down, what a mess.  It all started when a bunch of whales at okCoin decided to eliminate their long positions on BTC. Thousands, possibly tens of thousands, of Bitcoin were dumped over an hour or so and the rest is history. Poor CoinBase got inundated with buy orders mostly when the bottom fell out of the price and came to a screeching halt. Best I can tell there was some panic mixed in when a number of Tiawan banks stopped supporting BTC/USD markets. My wife saw the buy opportunity but could not get on. Her comment? "Figures..."  Oh well, maybe next time.

I see this as a failure to scale up quickly enough and have the reserve computing power, and big enough pipe to handle what used to be anomalies but are becoming common place. The truest saying out there is "Only the strong survive" It's time for the exchanges to bulk up!

I agree wholeheartedly that they didn't cause it, and hope that the post didn't suggest otherwise. I also agree that they have some clear scaling issues that need to be resolved. It wouldn't hurt for some of these exchanges to beef up their support capabilities as well - but they're still fairly young.

Sometimes it's hard to get kids to listen...

Reality check: If you have a lot of money, paying a $20 - $100 transaction fee may not bother you if it is done to transfer large amounts of money in a secure manner. For the other 99% of the world's population, it is a dealbreaker. At this point, bitcoin is no longer the 'currency of the people', or a currency at all for that matter. Your morning latte would cost $103.75... I don't think so!

Crypto Price Boom and Miner Demand Help Spark AMD Stock Price Surge

https://dcebrief.com/crypto-price-boom-and-miner-demand-help-spark-amd-stock-price-surge/

It is great to see many potential future partners benefiting from crypocurrency's success (AMD). I like that many ethereum chains have still meant GPU mining is a profitable venture. I remember mining numerous crypto on my AMD R9 280x for quite a while. If only my dad knew at that the DNotes value today is much, MUCH greater than the electricity cost of running the machine (which made him turn it off).

Oops.

I know the feeling. My parents threw out my comic collection when I moved out and went off to college. A pile of Golden and Silver Age books - including some that I've since watched sell at auction for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Who knew...?

It all sounds incredible! Thanks for giving plenty of time for the change over! I'm getting quite a few people to get on board these days and spreading the word. It helps that i've owned and followed Dnotes for 3 years now. Funny thing is I tell everyone to buy small amount or whatever they're willing to lose in high risk, for the good potential to have enormous rewards. They agree to look into it and put a little in. I also tell them to FIRST research it for themselves, check out Dnotescoin.com, the forum, and Alan Yong himself... Next thing I Know there buying TONS of it Grin.. It shows that Dnotes has a LOT to show for itself and has a phenomenal vision! Also has plenty of resources to check out this present day.

What a great way to keep the price at a stable rise too. The chart will look great by the 4th quarter attracting more attention over the long run... and will probably even get some people gifting Dnotes for christmas this year! Great job everyone involved. I sure hope the community is sharing the secret before Dnotes 2.0 is released so that many people can get on board while it's undervalued.

I still want a Dnotes T-shirt Cheesy.. lol.. someday

"I still want a Dnotes T-shirt"

You read my mind... Shocked

Investing in Bitcoin and other digital currencies is certainly not for the faint of heart and no one will deny that it is speculative. Speculators will practically pay any price if they believe that they can turn around and sell them at higher prices. “ … a Speculative Asset with “No Intrinsic Value” may sound debatable but tough to defend.

Some may be creating more fundamental value than others but most may not bother. Over the longer-term it pays to be able to differentiate. At DNotes we have been devoting a lot of resources to ensure that DNotes will have significant “Intrinsic Value” one day.

Bitcoin a Speculative Asset with “No Intrinsic Value”, Says Business Insider Founder
Samburaj Das on 30/05/2017

As bitcoin captures the world’s attention while soaring to unprecedented heights, the cryptocurrency has been labelled as an asset primed for a bubble, with no intrinsic value.

Henry Blodget is the founder, CEO and editor of prominent financial news publication Business Insider stated:

Look, this is a perfect asset for a speculative bubble…There is a finite supply. There is no intrinsic value. If anybody is persuading you that it should somehow be related to some GDP or gold…put down the Kool-Aid and back away.”

He's right about bitcoin's intrinsic value, of course - though he could substitute virtually any means of exchange or asset in place of "bitcoin" and be equally correct. Fortunately, Dnotes' unique value proposition isn't based on speculation from a trading standpoint or on some noble hope that the marketplace will figure out how to use it to make a worthwhile contribution to mankind's progress. After all, hope is not a strategy. DNotes is unique in that the team that's brought it to life remains committed to building a dynamic ecosystem capable of bridging the gap between cutting-edge decentralized digital technology and the clunkier centralized financial systems that continue to leave billions of the world's citizens underserved or altogether ignored.

I continue to believe that this digital currency is one that can help to transform the world and create solutions that help to empower ordinary citizens in almost every nation on the planet. It's that important, and the video series will hopefully help to flesh that out in a way that makes sense to not only crypto-enthusiasts but crypto-neophytes who may be trying to understand why any of this matters.

With that said, I'd offer my own humble opinion about some content that I'd like to see explored in greater depth in a future video: paint a picture of what the world could look like for average consumers, businesses, and those who are underserved by the banking world once the DNotes strategy is implemented on a broader scale. Technical analysis and feature explanations are important for early and future stakeholders, but less crypto-savvy individuals will need the dots connected for them before they understand how it can eventually benefit them in their everyday lives.*

Hope might not be a strategy, but the DNotes strategic vision is one that can inspire hope.

*I apologize in advance if that sort of video was already produced and I somehow missed the link. Been suffering from a touch of bronchitis, so it's entirely possible that it escaped my notice.

Thank you DCEBrief.

It's incredibly important that we simplify the video content as much as possible so that people unfamiliar with crypto can have the dots connected for them. One of the problems in our industry is that when people make content, they relate ideas together that are not obvious to the laymen - requiring some level of background knowledge to make the connection between the concepts.

I'm satisfied with the effort in this video - it provides a good base to launch further from. The next releases I contribute to will be more structured / planned I think. And make sure that all ideas contain an explanation for crypto-savvy, while breaking it down for those less familiar. I will also consider doing the segments individually in different videos so to respect our more knowledgeable industry peers.

You have been writing some great content at DCEBrief, perhaps I'll send the proposed structures, or a practice video by you for comment.

That video is outstanding in every respect, and something that the entire DNotes community can point to with pride. It's also one of the few crypto-related presentations I've seen that didn't leave me with that "hey kid, wanna buy the Brooklyn Bridge?" feeling. Nicely done.
