61  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 6 5830 on 1 MOBO is it possible? on: May 29, 2011, 05:13:08 PM
Would that put too much strain on the Molex port on the PSU? because it seems like each card will have their own own 2 PCIe Plugs on the psu, Then the remianing 6 cards will have to share 2 each on a molex port is that bad?
If you get a power supply with only one 12 volt rail then it shouldn't matter as long as you don't exceed the maximum capacity of that rail. Some cheaper power supplies have up to like four 12 volt rails so you would have to balance your load across them all.

That is such a good idea! VMWare! Quick question for you there,

Generally a powersupply will have 4 PCIe power cables, how can 1 run 8 Cards with 1 power supply?
4 pin molex to 6 pin pci-e

I OC'd all my 6950s now to 840mhz and 20% extra power on the catalyst control center. I wish I can clock them higher, they are stable as a rock, I am getting between 300mhash/s - 325mhash/s per seconds on each card at these settings. Temps are high 60's-c Any way I can push them harder?
I'm assuming 840mhz is the max in Catalyst Control Center?
You can use MSI Afterburner to clock them higher.

You guys are so awesome in this forum.

I thought windows can only accept up to 4 cores, and linux up to 6 cores is that not true? If you can really run up up to 8 GPUs on 1 board how do I go about setting it up?

I am awaiting more awesomeness from this forum. Thanks guys Smiley
Linux can go up to 8 cores as far as I know.
66  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 3K worth of mining equipment did it all fail? on: May 29, 2011, 06:40:48 AM
the implication of your post is that you have more than one rig running, they are identical, and they have the same problem.

so it probably isn't the motherboard, or the cards.

i figure it's either heat or the PSUs are overtaxed.

Well Right now, only 1 rigg has been put together. It is only running 1 card, because I dont have dummy plugs yet, they are coming. Since it's crashing with 1 card I am getting worried.

ahh.  an entirely different kettle of fish.

put in a different card.  try to duplicate the problem.  then, if it duplicates, try a different PSU.  etc.

Okay Cool, TY I think, the problem was that power saver mode would kick in every 30 minutes... I just shut that off. I'll report back if it works. Thanks for all the help folks.

He did report back --- POWER SAVE MODE kicking in every 30 mins  ... I've been there !

I was thinking it was that as I read this. I knew it could not be the PSU, unless a faulty PSU, as I have an 800w psu with my 2x 6950 cards... that PC is primarily a gaming machine, though.
67  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Does pool hopping really work? on: May 29, 2011, 06:37:57 AM
Look, I'll confess (anonymously), I pool hop and it works.

Pool hopping is not cheating - it is optimizing. It is the responsibility of pool operators to implement algorithms that are fair. I'd think of all people, cypherpunks like bitcoin miners would be the first ones to recognize this fact. If you place all your trust into math, don't suddenly complain about fairness if your math turns out to not be good enough.

Hopping away from a single pool (at 43% of mean round time) earns 30% more. Hopping between a couple pools (I have 4 currently automated) earns me 70% more. If you'd automate a dozen pools, you could earn more than 100% extra.

Slush's pool is not secure because he messed up his algorithm. I earn 20% more on his pool. Deepbit pool is not secure, because they got a large market share. If no other pool solved the block (which I know automatically), it was most likely deepbit, even if their statistics are delayed by an hour.

Pool hopping is not too common. I've analyzed the statistics of the pools I use, and less than 5% of users pool hop, so "unsofisticated" pool miners only loose 2-5% of income. After publishing this post, I expect hopping to become more common.

What I want to happen is for pool miners to implement mathematically-fair payment algorithms. This is the solution best for the community in the end, but not manually enforcing no-hopping rules or withholding information. There is a complicated score-based algorithm published somewhere on this forum (not slush's algorithm) that seems secure, though I didn't check it in too much detail. There is a much simpler fair algorithm though, which I want you to confirm: pay for all shares submitted in the last 1 hour of a round. If a block is found sooner than 1 hour into a round, then rollover the extra time and pay for the unpaid shares of the previous round, or the previous round before that (if the previous round was shorter than an hour as well), and so on. This way, each share has equal expected utility regardless of when it is submitted - early on or late in a round. Late shares in long rounds are subsidized by early shares in short rounds. You can use any time interval shorter than the mean round time. I'd recommend 1/4 of the mean time, e.g. 1 hour for a 130GHash/s pool.

I'll report back if it works.
Lol guys have you not seen that the problem is already solved?
But he said he would report back and then never said anything...
69  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: BTCMiner - An advanced upcoming GUI. on: May 28, 2011, 03:02:21 AM
Thanks, got any requests?
Not yet, maybe I will after I test the beta Tongue

edit - The ability to change the white background colour.
Oh, and the ability to read JSON API's so i don't have to use the windows sidebar gadget (i'm not sure how realistic this request is for a miner, but it would be an awesome feature)

71  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Deepbit versus BtcMine on: May 27, 2011, 11:19:57 PM
i dont believe in btcmine 0% fee

i laughed out loud when reading that
thank you

I have mined on both pools and I have to say they are both amazing.
Deepbit solves blocks so fast, you can just sit there and watch your balance go up. Deepbit also has the pay per share option which is really nice if you want ZERO variance. Instant payouts and payment for invalid blocks is pretty sweet too.
BTCmine has the top 50 which is nice if you have a decent hashrate Wink. And of course, the option to pay no fee if you so choose.

72  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: ONE CORE CPU - is this a problem? on: May 26, 2011, 10:13:12 AM
Yea that's right!

So I can just run it as is???
Yes Smiley

mmmmmm the stats got reset after mainteneance, along with my unconfirmed/confirmed bounty :S
My unconfirmed/confirmed balances are going up slowly.
and now it's back to normal

75  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: BTC Guild - 0% Fee Mining Pool (Long polling, JSON API) [~160 gH/sec] on: May 24, 2011, 09:06:01 AM
i have this question regarding block confirmations.

when you say "51 until confirmed", what does the number 51 represent? hours? minutes? shares?

thanks!
It means that 51 blocks need to be solved by the network.
76  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Please test: New Experimental Pool "Eligius" on: May 22, 2011, 07:32:44 PM
I'm fairly new at pooled mining but, my Eligius pool stats seem to swing wildly.  I've got one HD5970 throwing a rock steady 700 Mhash/s with phoenix, hardly any rejects (0 to 2 a day) but my reported stats swing from about 680 to 715.  Is that normal?  My box will mine faster with poclbm (730) but Eligius reports that to be slower.

Also, would adding another computer/miner to the Eligius pool with the same 'pay-to' address slow the other miner down?
Yes that is normal, and no, adding another miner with the same address will NOT slow anything down Wink
77  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Temps on a 5850 on: May 21, 2011, 10:36:06 PM
The current ambient temperature here is 25C

I'm running 3 5850's at 960/300 and they are all around 80C
78  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Dual PSU, will it work? on: May 16, 2011, 11:38:12 PM
I believe that connecting the green wire on the PSU's motherboard connector to any of the black wires will fool the PSU into thinking that you've turned the motherboard (that isn't there) on. You can then use the PSU to power other devices as normal.

This works. I am doing it right now to power a few of my cards.
79  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: LinuxCoin A lightweight Debian based OS with everything ready to go. on: May 14, 2011, 05:31:31 AM
Linux noob here.

How do i run the miners?
80  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Please test: New Experimental Pool "Eligius" on: May 13, 2011, 05:13:40 AM
Interesting. I think you may have solved my problem too. Do you get any RPC errors with phoenix?

I very rarely get RPC errors, if any.
