Overheating issues on the 5870? Try putting a fan on top of it. This way it will blow cold air right on the cooling fans.

I put the 5970's spare fan on top of the 5870, temp dropped to 84C almost immediately. Thanks!

Btw, the fourth card is a 5850 xtreme. Does at least as much as one core on the 5970, liking it very much.

It's a temp deal, also I'm keeping an eye on it. Should the PSU get hot, I'll put it on the floor (using its fan right now, till I get more fans)
I could also isolate the contact points if it's too much heat.

Lol the motherboard box=case is great for most stuff but i can see it being a little dangerous for mining rigs.

However, we're generally talking about temps below 100C for the CORE of the GPU, and I'm sure the air is quite a bit cooler than that.  Paper burns at ~541F (thanks Bradbury) and cardboard is closer to 800F.  I'm still new to this but fire seems pretty unlikely if you keep your setup free of clumped dust.  If anyone has any horror stories than please share (not to correct me, but because i want to hear them )

I currently have three dedicated rigs, two of them using this test bench:



I hadn't seen many builds like this yet so I thought I would share. It fits a full ATX mobo and large power supply and if you have a dremel tool you can easily carve out new holes to tie down cables to. The HDD/Optical mounts underneath but if you're like me you are just booting from USB.

I am going to be putting together another 2 x 6990 rig and have a third one of these test benches on the way. When I get home later today though I will post up my two 5850 builds. Cooling is as easy as setting them on a shelf by a window and putting a small fan in front of them on low to blow the air outside. That literally is all I need to do at this point. The bench is actually sturdy enough to just tote around by the handle you can see in the corner.

Works good man, and I'll get my actual builds pics up when I'm home from the 9 to 5.

If you are comfortable revealing, what country are you in? If you really would like some, it might be possible to work out a deal with someone who could order and then re-ship, for btc or something. It is a very nice test bench but might not be worth the hassle if you can construct something yourself like a lot of these awesome homebrew benches and racks people are posting.

wooden base was better. esp made from fire-proof wood.
mechanically and chemically/chemically -stable
and guy with good hands can do such things very quick and accurate/reliable/well-looking.

only flaw is lack of EMI shielding, but it can be added later. perhaps if you find unused [for years]tinfoli hat

With the 5970 since it's an externally exhausting design I'd recommend putting the fans in front of the intake vents (or so they're called - they're at the end of the card)

Hmm, this got me thinking. You can also put a box fan or two and set them to blow across the whole area of the motherboard/gpus. I'm talking about those smaller 5 inch desk fans. They're pretty powerful and will provide ample CFMs for cooling pleasure

Hmm about paper catching fire, I dunno, I read somewhere that it takes quite a high temperature to ignite cardboard. Now if you happen to spill some flammable substance nearby ..lol don't drink alcohol near the rigs

Nice!  I'm interested to know if you can manage to get all 6 running from one mobo.  If you can close off the case (with slots for the PCIe wiring) and arrange the extra PSUs a bit better (so everything is blowing hot air in the same direction), you could pretty easily get all air flowing from front to rear and make a little home made setup to vent all the hot air away.  Did you do anything special such that all those cards aren't drawing power from the PCIe bus?

In the end I gave in after going through many potential fixes from XFX - probably something limiting it  on the SC440 MB. I've now changed to using 2xGA-E350N-USB3B each with 8GB RAM/8GB USB Flash/PCIe Switch/3xHD5870/650W PSU (aircon blows over the cards so they are kept quite cool).

You should do some testing yourself but I get better cooling blowing air down onto the cards, as most card fans suck in air and push it out the front of back.

Yep, that's why I feel a good side panel fan is a good idea if you're not running open air (ie caseless).

Tilt your head to the left: 379 (watts). That's what my system was running at under stock clocks. I have both cares overclocked now, running at 420W.
