82  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why is my Bitcoin Core wallet telling me I am 7 years out of date? on: May 19, 2018, 08:25:38 PM
Hello ksirvine! As others have said, it's not synced yet. As far as wallets go, we would recommend you looking into multi currency wallets such as Coinomi or Jaxx. These have very intuitive UI's and are great for beginners. They also have the added convenience of being accessible on your phone. All that said, once you get a little more comfortable with transactions and with the crypto space in general, it is advisable to invest in a hardware wallet such as the nano-s or trezor. These are the best in terms of security and are great for offline storage, not to mention they can be used in tandem with your mobile wallet. Lastly, no matter which wallet you go with, make sure to never leave your funds on an exchange platform and to always back up your wallet seed!

Feel free to check out our blog post on wallets for some extra info! http://bit.ly/WalletGuide

Cheers
83  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What strategy to follow before investing in BTC? on: May 19, 2018, 07:11:13 PM
there's really no time-tested method, unfortunately. What has worked for others may not work for you. The main rule is to invest what you can afford to lose. High profile investors like Mark Cuban say you have to look at it as if you just lost the money you put in. One way you can mitigate the effects of a volatile market, however, is by practicing dollar cost averaging as an investment strategy. You decide on a fixed amount you are willing to investment and invest it on a consistent schedule. 84  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: More than 20 % in one day on: May 19, 2018, 04:00:01 AM
Two digits is considered a significant increase for any coin. However, earlier this year in January, Aeron, had a few straight days of 3 digit gains--over 300%. Of course this was short-lived as you might have expected.
85  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: were to buy bitcoin £1 pounds to bitcoin???? on: May 17, 2018, 06:24:22 PM
As ummart66 says, it's not going to be worth buying such a low amount, the fees will offset your purchase completely. Would increasing your purchase amount by a little be feasible? As other have said, look into exchange platforms that are supported in your region. One we always recommend as it is very easy to use is the Square Cash App. Download it on your phone, all you need is a debit card.

Cheers
86  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin to use 0.5% of world’s electricity by end of 2018 on: May 17, 2018, 06:15:04 PM
I'd actually be more interested in seeing how big of a part green energy is of those statistics...
I'd imagine it could be a lot cheaper to generate your own power with either solar or wind, especially for large-scale mining operations.

What's the problem with Bitcoin mining taking up so much power? Would this be an issue if the missing capacity was filled with additional renewable energy?

I really think that in some point in the future, we're really not going to be worrying about power anymore. Once we transition to highly efficient and environmentally-friendly renewables, power consumption might not even be an issue anymore. We're still pretty far off from that, but I do think we'll get there eventually. (If we don't destroy our planet first)

I highly doubt it is much, due to the fact that most of the mining happens in cheap areas (such as China) which rely heavily on coal miniing. Which everyone knows that there is nothing, and I mean NOTHING, clean at all about coal. So if green energy has even 5 percent of an involvement in all bitcoin then I'd be insanely surprised, but it is still possible.

No one is going to be interested in being efficient when being efficient is going to cost more than not caring at all. It's sad, but people do only care about their bottom line at the end of the day. That's just how the world works. We'll see what the future holds for green energy.

Agreed. You'd think with the emergence of disruptive technology like blockchain there should be an equally as revolutionary or at the very least improvement in regards to the energy powering it. Alas, there is no such bilateral effort. Hopefully this becomes a more serious issue in the eyes of the public and we can begin looking at renawable energy for mining--it makes so much sense in the big picture. We could try using surplus energy from solar and wind sources or even look further into energy-from-waste methods.
87  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are Custodial Services Needed? on: May 17, 2018, 02:06:17 AM
The average, passive holders of crypto typically prefer convenience over more responsibility. There's no doubt it takes a little more effort to move your funds out of an exchange platform to a hardware wallet and backup your seed and store it, etc. Kudos to you for being more safety-conscious, though.
88  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: With Bitcoin Maximum cap . Can it be used by the whole world ? on: May 17, 2018, 01:49:04 AM
Having a finite supply in many ways is actually a good thing as it ensures that demand stays up which also means the price will increase--at least that's how the model is supposed to work. Don't look at btc as a future world currency that overtakes fiat, instead look at it as an alternative currency that people use whenever they see fit and that merchants accept if they choose to. For the btc ecosystem to survive after all coins have been mined it will be dependent on btc value continuing to increase--as its model is structured to do. If this stays true, miners will then be able to charge worthwhile fees for each transaction on the network thus keeping incentives alive and allowing for further dissemination of btc.

Vitalik is definately a prominent influencer, and keeping up with him can help people stay on top of new developments that drive the entire industry. It'd be worth it to check him out at this years TechCrunch Sessions on July 6th!

91  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: SCAMS on: May 16, 2018, 10:27:13 PM
Some tips to avoid being scammed would be:
-Don't take shortcuts...makes you an easy target for fraudsters
-Don't follow the masses...if a coin becomes popular really fast, make sure to do your research first.
-Pros and cons of a coin will always be open, don't fall for big promises
-Understand the blockchain technology, if the code base isn't open proceed with caution

Hope this helps!
92  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin Theft stories to make your toes curl! on: May 16, 2018, 03:47:28 AM
A pretty big problem would be being scammed or hacked...someone stealing your money because you didn't have the knowledge on how to avoid it. It's good to know what you're getting yourself into and how to avoid those problems!
93  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What about Token or Coins? on: May 16, 2018, 03:43:56 AM
When differentiating between Coin nod token, it just comes down to functionality and form. A coin usually means it's a true currency to be used for payment whereas a token typically has more functionality. You can read more about it in our blog post:

94  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Crypto records for tax on: May 15, 2018, 05:28:29 PM
To add to what MintDiceSupport suggested, yes, keep a basic excel spread sheet or even a handwritten ledger with all your transactions. Put purchases from exchanges on one side and sales (with dates) on the other. Also record any spending you might have made from your wallet as well as any (if any) coins you might have been gifted. Then use these guys: https://bitcoin.tax/
95  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Looking for a good platform to create crypto videos on: May 15, 2018, 05:00:12 PM
Referral links to products and such are indeed allowed on youtube just make sure it's relevant to the topic--additionally you might need to sign up to be an affiliate. What exactly are you looking to include in your videos as far as links go? Alternatively, as seoincorporation mentioned, you could always go a different route and make your own blog/website.

96  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How can you explain cryptocurrency in a simplest way? on: May 14, 2018, 10:25:11 PM
You could describe Bitcoin as a virtual currency--no physical cash or coins. Funds are exchanged peer-to-peer on a "blockchain" which is basically a giant ledger for recording and storing transactions.
97  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I recorded my screen while using a cool trading tool on: May 14, 2018, 05:52:31 PM
This is cool, might be helpful putting this in the beginners section as a lot of newbie traders are found there or in the trading section of the forum.

My friend, I doubt this will have any sort of impact now seeing as how every one has known of their involvement for the past 3 years (gemini was founded in 2015).

99  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Learning Crypto trading as a beginner on: May 13, 2018, 07:02:37 PM
So many persons learn Crypto trading through the hard way, with no guidance from any angle and I happen to be among these categories of persons... And one thing I understand is that, those that learn through hard ways always do best!

So many persons sees trading as one big thing that requires a lot of time to learn, the fact is that anything that involves money requires an attention and sometimes we often get scared of losing our money.
But the truth is that Crypto trading is very easy compared to forex/stock-market.

You can learn Crypto trading on your own without any help from anyone, but you can't do this with forex/stock-market.

The best way to learn about Crypto trading is to play around with the market with a small amount of money.

Or if you have any altcoin, you can spare some unit, take it to the market, do some buying and  selling, do it over and over again, it doesn't necessarily mean you must buy the same altcoin. Buy other altcoins.
If  you can keep up with this within a 2weeks, You will see results.

Contributions from other Crypto Trader is higher welcome but please avoid spamming.

For the individuals that still have too much anxiety starting out with even a 'small amount' of money in the market, there are demo accounts that you can make on trading simulators such as: https://cryptospaniards.com/simulator/  --These allow you to use 'fake' funds while you gain confidence applying different trading strategies.
100  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best news site for crypto on: May 12, 2018, 08:56:45 PM
Have you looked into youtube channels? They sometimes offer a relief from the typical content found in online publications. Datadash, coinmastery and cryptodaily are a few good ones to start with.
