81  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL's Jalapeno exists - I have one in my hand and just uploaded a video on: April 21, 2013, 02:42:46 AM
This maybe a noob question.  But if this is the first time you have ever opened the box, then why when you plugged it in for the first time (and it said drivers not found) why did you immediately know that you were missing generic USB drivers...(that you found "embarrassing")?

My first instinct when plugging in a new device and seeing drivers not found would be to start rummaging around in the box for a driver disk?

Also (not directed to the OP) what is the thinking behind shipping out free demo models before shipping out (or even giving a concrete shipping date) for orders that were paid in full 10 months ago?

My guess is because he is using the FPGA Single already and ran into it before. You have to go through the same thing with the USB drivers for the latest versions of cgminer, so I would assume the same is true for bfgminer.

They may not care now, but if they don't receive their frankenminer for a few months they'll certainly care then as it's power consumption that determines how long mining equipment remains profitable. Josh and others attempting to pretty this turd up by saying it's still more efficient than Avalon are ignoring the fact that Avalons are real products that real miners are really using right now.

Not only that, but even if you have fixed electricity costs like I do, heat becomes a concern. More power = more heat.

Seriously, "...don't cry..." about not getting the product you should have had months ago? I feel like they truly care about me as a customer.
84  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL 5 GH/s Miner Demo on: April 20, 2013, 03:46:22 AM
My FPGA Singles have no labels or markings whatsoever on their exterior.  I guess they aren't certified.

Which is why I'm thinking these possibly won't need it either. They use an external power supply which should already have the UL certification and FCC might be excluded as "commercial test equipment" (that may be a stretch). It seems hardly worth bothering to go for the certifications unless the FCC comes after them. I doubt it will even hit their radar.

EDIT: Of course, Phinnaeus Gage pointed out that Josh said something about getting it. I don't know if that means they need it BEFORE they ship, or if after is OK.

He has every right to make this offer, we all have now just placed our opinions that it is a terrible offer, the best thing is to probably just let it be what it is. People can take it or leave it.

I personally think it is the wrong place for it, but whatever, I'm not a mod.
86  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Check your thermal paste on BFL FPGA's on: April 20, 2013, 03:22:48 AM
Did you use Arctic Silver or some kind of special compound, or just regular white paste?

Arctic Silver is awesome, but I started using Arctic MX-2 instead because it is non-conductive and non-capacitive, yet is almost as a good at heat transfer. I'm big on PC water cooling so I have a big ass tube of it.
87  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Check your thermal paste on BFL FPGA's on: April 20, 2013, 03:09:19 AM
Chupacabra!!!

Its real?

You know these are the FPGA's and not the ASIC's right?
88  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Check your thermal paste on BFL FPGA's on: April 20, 2013, 03:03:39 AM
Nothing new.

That looks like it is caked in it compared to how mine was.
89  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL 5 GH/s Miner Demo on: April 20, 2013, 02:42:57 AM
Unfortunately, I have no insight as to what Avalon may, or may not, be required to do to ship such wares to the US. But, BFL being Inc. in the US is a completely different issue, thus a host of regulations they must comply to, the FCC one being the main one.

But that doesn't make any sense. Why does my TV from China have to have that and UL? There has to be something more to it.

This link is actually rather interesting: https://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/398

"What can I do to avoid expensive testing and still remain in compliance with the laws?"
"A digital device used exclusively as industrial, commercial, or medical test equipment."

"Have the stated performance" yet use much more power than stated in the original specification?

How am I not surprised to see a stupid statement that contradicts itself posted here?

Had too much BFL kool-aid recently?

Lol so fail  Grin

You are correct, I should have said hashrate. Performance would indeed be a combination of the two.

And no, no kool-aid. I've just already been through this before with the FPGA. It was late, I was pissed, I tried to cancel. Then I changed my mind, waited, and the FPGA showed up and has paid for itself many times over.

I just went into this knowing exactly how they work, good or bad.
92  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL 5 GH/s Miner Demo on: April 20, 2013, 02:01:58 AM

Clearly then, any FPGA miner that they shipped was in violation of US law if it didn't at least have an FCC tag in place. Any unit sent to a municipality in the US that requires a UL lag clearly puts them and the customer who received it in violation of the law.

Ergo, Sonny Vleisides is clearly breaking the law, coupled with having some of his clients break it as well, depending on which municipality they live in. Circumnavigating CE regulations is a completely different matter altogether.

The FCC requirement is a concern of BFL, otherwise they wouldn't have posted that they were in the process of obtaining approval.

What about the other mining devices? Do they have any of those certifications?

BTW I'm not being a troll. I seriously don't know the answer.
93  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Buying BFL debt. $0.10 per dollar owed. on: April 20, 2013, 01:59:42 AM
BFL is going to end up shipping the product. It will use more power than they said, take longer to get, but will have the stated performance. Exactly like the last time.

So if anyone has BFL SC Single's they want to sell for $0.20 per dollar owed, please let me know instead Wink
94  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL 5 GH/s Miner Demo on: April 20, 2013, 01:34:43 AM

This is excellent news! Now they have something to ship to the various labs to obtain CE, UL and FCC approval for, unless Sonny has an in with them folks in not having to abide by governmental regulations, thus avoiding the myriad of fines.

You keep posting this without answering why they need that when the BFL FPGA did not? There are no CE, UL, or FCC tags anywhere on it, yet they shipped plenty of them. As far as I can tell, if it doesn't directly deal with AC, and doesn't directly deal with network, it shouldn't need any of that.

Does any custom miner out there now have any of those?
95  Bitcoin / Hardware / Check your thermal paste on BFL FPGA's on: April 20, 2013, 01:29:31 AM
Yeah, I know the first few replies... blah blah scam ASICS... blah blah whatever.

Anyway, for anyone that has a BFL FPGA, I always thought I just got one that wasn't a great performer. It has always done the stock speed, but ran really hot.

The fan on mine started making terrible noises so BFL sent me a new one. While I was taking it apart to replace the fan, I figured I may as well put new thermal paste on since I have a giant tube of it. Well, to my surprise there was NONE on there. It looked like the heatsink was just put directly on top of the FPGA's. I put some paste on, mounted the heatsink, and it now runs at the second fastest firmware they provide, and it does it about 20C cooler.
96  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Use Beagleboard/Pandaboard to run FGPA mining rig on: April 18, 2013, 02:50:42 AM
In case anyone runs into this like I did, it is perfectly possible to do this. I just got it up and running with cgminer 2.11.4 on a BeagleBoard revision B5 board. I just used the Ubuntu instructions here:

http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu

Then built with the cgminer instructions. My BFL Single is happily hashing along with no problems.

Just so you know, your store doesn't seem to handle passwords very well. I use random passwords that are not all alpha-numeric. It accepts the password when registering, but then rejects it on logging in. I ended up using one that had no ()[] or {} in it and it seems to work.

WARNING:  They have an affiliate program.  RED FLAG

wat...

Expedia has an affiliate program

Ticketmaster has an affiliate program

Apple has an affiliate program...

Are they all scams too?

Affiliate programs do not make something a scam. The scammyness of this site itself makes it a scam.

Well... Ticketmaster is pretty close.

The block can be Alu, dont listen to anyone and think cooper is a must. Use Alu with brass radiator. Its so simple you can make that block by hand.
Keep the cost down.

Except why would you want to lock out using PC cooling hardware which is already abundant and easy to buy? It will give a lot more flexibility in the long run.
