221  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Finally some good press about Bitcoins! Maybe this isnt the end! :) on: June 17, 2011, 02:48:02 AM
What needs to be done is get the word out about what bitcoins are truly about, not the word of ignorant media whore senators. The more good press we get the harder it will be for the two senators to try and go after it. If we get enough positive press it could become political suicide for them to continue. We need to counter the assumptions they are spreading around and show what bitcoins are about and what they represent. Also let the world know the uses and potential that bitcoins have. This is why i am glad MtGox is jumping in. They have the power to protect bitcoins.

Well we can't just rely on the press, this also has to be a grass roots development. I'm doing my part. Everyone needs to understand it in a simple way.

223  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone is Jobbing this Market on: June 17, 2011, 02:21:12 AM
I'm glad that the market is doing exactly like I'm predicting.

Next prediction: downward drift to $15 range @ about a 75% certainty.  May trigger a panic sell off with the bad press.

And then the difficulty rating goes down? Yayyyyy!
224  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Finally some good press about Bitcoins! Maybe this isnt the end! :) on: June 17, 2011, 02:10:37 AM
standing up for Bitcoins against the two clueless senators and the DEA.

sounds more like rolling over

business is business though: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=17694.0

I disagree because the way things were going bitcoins would be outlawed in months within the US. The ignorance of the two senators blows my mind. And how they act on that ignorance without even taking the time to look into bitcoins shows you how sad our government and our representatives have become. The only way to keep bitcoins alive is to have some transparency with the government only to the extent as to keep drug dealers and money launderers away from bitcoins. If we cannot seperate ourselves from illegal activity bitcoin as a whole will fall.

I do understand though that it can be a shady area cooperating with the federal government. If they do just enough to help seperate criminals from upstanding citizens it will be fine in my eyes. But if they go as far as letting the government in as any kind of a regulatory role then it will ruin the whole purpose of bitcoins. But thankfully as of now MtGox seems to only want to help fight crime when asked not open the doors. A quote from that article:

" Quote from: Bind on June 15, 2011, 10:37:36 pm
I think ONLY  under legal and required circumstances (court orders), all bitcoin business should cooperate with the law. Not to appease an outraged and out of control legislator, general public, or governments, and certainly not make bitcoins appear more legitimate.

That is we intend to do.

I do not want however to see US politicians go all over the place claiming incorrect things about Bitcoin, just because they are ignorant. They will cause global misinformation as whatever they say is echoed broadly.

We will comply to court orders valid under our jurisdiction after our lawyers confirm there is no other recourse available.

I wonder has anyone reached out to the Senators to edumacate them or should we let them rant for awhile?

Thank you for all the publicity Senator.....   Cool

227  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [announce] Namecoin - a distributed naming system based on Bitcoin on: June 17, 2011, 01:58:20 AM
I'm having a problem with the .conf file. Is there a special way it needs to be created? the way I was doing it was with a text document named bitoin.conf and I'd put a user name and pass in it yet it still doesn't work. Namecoind closes automatically by itself still and if I run namecoind commands in CMD I get this error:

error: You must set rpcpassword=<password> in the configuration file:
C:/Users/Edit/AppData/Roaming/Namecoin/bitcoin.conf

The file is in the correct place. I must be doing something wrong. Any ideas?

Does that path exist on your computer? Is that where you put the file? You do have file extensions showing under folder options, correct?
228  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How many newbies are mining? on: June 16, 2011, 10:26:48 PM
I started last Friday with mining. My HD 5770 does 200 MH/s @ 960Mhz.
Another 5770 currently on the way.

Let's hope the price will rise again!

Remember though that higher prices brings more miners which leads to greater difficulty yielding less BTC which means you make less..........     Undecided
229  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitcoin7.com - Brand new exchange market! on: June 16, 2011, 10:23:57 PM
Condemn them for that I guess....

Perhaps I wasn't very clear.  I was trying to point out that if Bruce's was trying to say that Bitcoin7 did something wrong, he didn't have a strong case, after all his hyping (and payoff?!) from TradeHill.

Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with the promotions in either case.  There are clearly issues with Bitcoin7 (technical, and their responses in forums), but unethical promotion isn't one that I would hold against them based on Bruce's word, particularly after his TradeHill introduction and misleading people (intentionally or unintentionally) that he was the site's creator.

My apologies jerfelix, I wasn't directing that towards you......it was generally speaking.
230  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitcoin7.com - Brand new exchange market! on: June 16, 2011, 09:07:46 PM
Just for the record...

I was offered money to post good things about this exchange site.

Bruce,

Weren't you offered money to push TradeHill too?  Seems they are a sponsor of your podcast, and you actually pushed them on a thread with your referral code.  So much that people in the original thread thought that YOU were the creator of TradeHill (and I have heard and read that confusion from MULTIPLE people on here).

(see https://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=13650.0;all especially messages 15, 19, 22, 33, and your ultra-hype intro message!)

I'm not saying you did anything wrong.  People can draw their own conclusions.  I just think transparency is a good thing.

Bitcoin7 offered you money.  TradeHill offered you something, no?  Sponsorship?  A cut of everyone's trades who uses your referral code?  Money?

I think this whole, "I was offered money" is being taken out of context. I was also contacted by B7 and was "informed" that their service provides a referral bonus.

On behalf of Bitcoin7.com I would like to ask you if you would be
interested to review our new BTC exchange, maybe tell us some
feedback.
Would it be possible to recommend us to your friends? (we have 20%
referral program)

Condemn them for that I guess....

I've been doing my own research on them and yes we all have security concerns but please be professional before letting emotion overtake you and lead you to false accusation. And for the love of god please respect other people's cultures as presently the US has over 800 military bases throughout the world conducting how many wars(?) pushing the US dollar down people's throats with the barrel of a gun!!!
231  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin7 post deleted? on: June 16, 2011, 09:00:00 PM
Personally, I doubt bitcoin7 was behind it. If they were, that would imply that the whole site was set up for that purpose, and that just seems like a lot of work for a little con.

I agree that removing the post was a very imbecilic act and the post should be returned IMMEDIATELY or a detailed explanation should be given by the admin explaining why they feel it is in the communities best interest to be naive and uninformed in this matter. This is not the first act of censorship to take place on this forum and if it were not for the great community that exists here I would surely 100% move elsewhere.

Censorship is why Namecoin exists is it not? Just sayin'.
232  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin7 post deleted? on: June 16, 2011, 08:58:44 PM
I've put this on another thread but I'm going to put it here in fairness to Bitcoin7.

I have successfully transferred BTC to them and sold it. The USD showed up in my account.

I then transferred it to my Dwolla account and it showed up without a hitch.

I know there's a lot of skepticism and healthy criticism but we need fairness in this witch hunt!!!    Cheesy
233  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Is Bitcoin/Mt.gox under an orchestrated attack to destroy confidence? on: June 16, 2011, 08:50:20 PM
We need to see a forex exchange allow bitcoins and then the MtGox problem is solved.

Yeah, you'd see volume fly then. God knows what would happen to the exchange rate. But is it a currency or commodity? Gold and silver aren't traded on currency exchanges.....
234  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How many newbies are mining? on: June 16, 2011, 08:48:36 PM
Based on the exponential growth in difficulty, one would have to assume that quite a lot of newbies are mining.

That and existing miners adding to their rigs. Getting into mining is like trying to open up a burger joint with your friends next to a McDonald's. Better have the goods. And that includes iron guts. But don't immediately move to discouragement. Look at namecoin mining as well.
235  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin7 post deleted? on: June 16, 2011, 08:42:58 PM
It was a scam. But, I agree: it should have been locked.

A scam on whose part?

Therein lies the 64k BTC question....

Culprits:

1) Bitcoin7
2) The user in question screwing around who had his own referral code linked. (I give this one high probability).
3) College kid pranskter (maybe high school in all fairness).
4) Competitor exchange trying to discredit them....

I'm sure there's more but #2 is high on my list.
236  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gavin will visit the CIA on: June 16, 2011, 08:39:13 PM

if feds/media wanted to someone/someidea look dumb, they can do that simply by filtering/editing/throttling speech and/or mixing portions of it.

237  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Bitcoin7 a new exchange on: June 16, 2011, 08:16:19 PM
So for what it's worth.

I have successfully transferred BTC to B7.

I have sold some BTC.

I transferred it to my Dwolla account and it's showing up there....

238  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitcoin7.com - Brand new exchange market! on: June 16, 2011, 06:44:46 PM
I don't see why you all are so scandalized with the idea of paying people for advertising the site... that doesn't imply they are scammers. I wouldn't call it bribery either. It is just one among many techniques of advertising, like when companies pay celebrities to "speak good" about their products on TV.

I guess we should start boycotting the products that athletes promote. Oh and we should all start boycotting the products that stores offer through coupons in the newspaper. $0.20 off is bribery isn't it? Buy one get one free? For shame, for shame.

We should also not use an ISP if they offer you the first month for free.

Cash back on a car purshase? Bad taste, no?

Come on people.
239  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Is Bitcoin/Mt.gox under an orchestrated attack to destroy confidence? on: June 16, 2011, 04:55:17 PM
Sorry to carry the bad news, but if this news checks out:

http://www.bighaber.com/haber/bitcoin-exchanges-offer-anti--money-laundering-aid-929817.html

Rather start to redesign exchanges, Mt.Gox is pretty much dead. This got to be a hard blow in the trust, the "aid offer" will be taken not only for bust drug dealers but to let the government stuck its nose on all BTC economy, from drugs and guns up to undeclared T-Shirt sales, making bitcoin the unsafer currency around.

So you expect an exchange that wants to be legitimate to not cooporate with authorities, no matter how "right" you may think it is as long as it is legal. Please explain how you expect it to work in the real world.

I'm with padrino on this one. It's not reasonable to think BTC is going to operate without any government intervention at all. Most people just really aren't thinking this through.

If I buy a shirt from padrino and send him BTC and he mails me a shirt, I have a shirt and no one's the wiser.

If I send Mt. Gox 1,000 BTC and sell them on the market and the gov gets involved well now what?

If I go to Forex.com and trade currency I'm expected to pay capital gains on my profit. No one likes taxes but it's the way it is. If you're hoping BTC is going to provide you a life of no taxes and freedom from from gov you are in the wrong century.

If BTC is going to be legitimate it needs to operate the same way a currency does and the community needs to grow up about this. No one likes to hear about any form of criminal activity but on what grounds can they "ban" BTC because someone wants to launder cash? You would have to ban cash itself!!! Gov may want to regulate it but criminalising BTC could be very dangerous for them.

It wouldn't go away for one. It would heighten people's awareness of it. And it would crystalize the black market and force the participants to refine and advance their methodologies. BTC is here to stay so "they" have to deal with it just as we have to deal with "them".

Like it or not.

What we need to put thought to as a community is: is BTC a commodity or currency? What's the cost basis for profit determination?
