61  Bitcoin / Armory / Hard fork procedures on: May 29, 2015, 07:43:57 PM
Hi there:

Could someone from Armory let us know how the proposed hard fork might or might not affect us users? Will Armory continue to run if we switch to BitcoinXT? Is there anything we'll need to do specifically to ensure we're on the chain we choose to be on?

Thanks.

Thanks so much, Goatpig. Been mulling the upgrade of both Armory and Core for a while now (was put off initially by some reports of crashes and so on). Maybe I should just bite the bullet and upgrade.
63  Bitcoin / Armory / Armory disconnects when trying to send on: April 14, 2015, 06:08:36 PM
Hi everyone:

I posted this to the Armory website over a week ago, but still no reply, so I thought I'd give it a try here:

This problem has been happening more and more often lately, hoping you can help.

Running Bitcoin Core 0.9.3 and Armory 0.92.3.

More often than not, when I try to send BTC, I get an error message from the tray icon that says "Connection to Bitcoin-QT lost! Armory cannot send or receive bitcoins". A second later, the connection is re-established, but the BTC were never sent.

If I try a different amount, or different combinations, I can sometimes get around it.

If I rescan and rebuild the databases the problem usually will go away (though only for a few days, then it comes back). But spending hours rebuilding the databases every time I want to send BTC somewhat defeats the purpose of the whole thing.

What's going on?
64  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Problem sending transactions, not accepted by the network, please help. on: November 14, 2014, 08:27:08 PM
Go to the Help menu, choose "Rebuild and Rescan Database". And be prepared to wait a while.

That usually fixes this problem.

Thanks! I'll try that.

EDIT: That worked! Thanks!
65  Bitcoin / Armory / Problem sending transactions, not accepted by the network, please help. on: November 14, 2014, 03:10:34 PM
Hi there:

This has happened several times today. I try to send a transaction, just like always, as soon as I enter the password, the Armory icon on my tray shows a message that says: Disconnected from Bitcoin QT, then immediately shows another that says Reconnected to Bitcoin QT, but then Armory shows me the following message, and the transaction never goes through:

The transaction you have executed does not appear to have been accepted by the Bitcoin network. This can happen for a number of reasons, but it's usually a bug in the Armory software.

The message continues (it's quite long) suggesting the message itself might be a bug, and that I should check the transaction on the blockchain first, then check the troubleshooting section of the Armory website.

Please help.
66  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am never using Bitpay!Former SEC chair takes advisory roles bitpay and vaurum! on: October 29, 2014, 03:22:34 PM
The pegging of Bitcoin to USD will be the demise of Bitcoin! If you really think about it, all the exchange scams, all the BS stems directly from that. Imagine how many problems would be eliminated if Bitcoin was not associated with USD at all.

What I don't understand is, people created Bitcoin to avoid middle men such as banks and then companies like Bitpay are created... people should avoid middle men at all costs.

What would you peg the price of BTC to then?

Yeah, pegging doesn't mean what you think it means... even this definition of pegging  Grin
67  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wealth distribution on: October 26, 2014, 07:49:15 PM
I am thinking about how this will affect adoption. If only 0.1% own 40% of BTC, then how will this affect adoption? Is Bitcoin less likely to take off if we have such giant whales? The market will always be susceptible to manipulation if there is such extreme unequal distribution.

OK, let's put it in a slightly different way: In 2009, 100% of bitcoins were owned by just one person. Today, nobody knows (the often-touted figure of 0.1% owning 40-50-60% is wrong, because it doesn't account for one address holding BTC from multiple owners, like an exchange, or multiple addresses holding the BTC of just one owner, like me, you and everyone else). However, it is safe to say that today 100% of all bitcoins aren't owned by one person. I know that because I own some, and people I know own others.

Now, is this likely to get better distributed or less so?

Bitcoin is scarce. There only exist a certain amount at any given time, and there will never be more than 21 million. Yet, the number of people who own bitcoins, as evidenced for example by the number of active wallets, is growing all the time.

The only way for the distribution to get worse would be if those who own bitcoins never spend, and simply buy more, until they own them all.

This is clearly absurd, as a bitcoin that isn't spent and never will be spent by definition is pretty much worthless, so there wouldn't be much point in hoarding them in that way.

Ergo, the distribution will tend in the other direction, crucially as the market becomes more liquid in the coming years.
68  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wealth distribution on: October 26, 2014, 01:29:14 PM
Uneven distribution of a scarce and naturally deflationary currency is not the same as uneven distribution of an endlessly inflated one.

Since the supply of bitcoins is limited, the trend will naturally be towards a more even distribution, not the other way around.

69  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory Paper wallet backup question on: October 23, 2014, 08:21:53 PM
Yes, it works. You can also make a backup on an external drive, CD, USB stick or SD card.

Just remember, however, that your paper backups are not encrypted. In other words, if you have a back up on a CD, and someone else gets a hold of it, they can't take your bitcoins without your password. But if they get a hold of your paper backup they can.
70  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory won't open. Help! on: October 23, 2014, 12:59:43 PM

Good news! I deleted the armorylog.txt file and the reinstalled Armory opened... of course now it's going to have to download the databases all over again.

The file was 1.45 GB... the armorycpplog.txt was only a few hundred KB

I am watching this thread, and if possible, please feel free to tell how long it took to download the databases and resynch Armory.  It took me 44 hours and I want to see if I'm an outlier or not.

Around 5 hours on both of my systems (different connection speeds but both over 10 Mbps)

exception MemoryError
Raised when an operation runs out of memory but the situation may still be rescued (by deleting some objects). The associated value is a string indicating what kind of (internal) operation ran out of memory. Note that because of the underlying memory management architecture (C’s malloc() function), the interpreter may not always be able to completely recover from this situation; it nevertheless raises an exception so that a stack traceback can be printed, in case a run-away program was the cause.

Maybe you ran out of RAM?  Maybe it's actually a completely overflowing log file and it can't read the whole thing in?

In your Armory home dir, check the size of armorylog.txt and armorycpplog.txt.  How big are they?  Try deleting them.

Thanks! As I said, I'll add some more ram, and then I'll try deleting those two files.

Don't worry about the RAM.  my guess is the log file somehow became 20 GB and Armory is choking trying to read it (which is ironic because it's failing while trying to cut it down to 1 MB)

Awesome. I'll definitely try that... too bad I deleted the databases and now will have to download them again. And that I already bought the ram (but I guess you can never have too much of that!)

Can you please confirm the sizes of those files.  I'm like 99% sure that what I just described is the problem, but I'd like confirmation.  If so, we can tweak the code to avoid this.  The whole point of that code block is to prevent this from happening, but apparently it can't handle once it has happened (perhaps from leaving Armory running for 3 months with a bunch of constant messages being written to log.

Sure, I'll check the size before I delete them. I don't think Armory was open for months on that computer, but probably about two weeks. That was running 0.90... one of the advantages of running 0.88 was that it kept crashing at somewhat regular intervals, so I guess this kind of thing never happened  Grin

such is the price of progress?

No, it's a trade off for maximum security. You can use very available and fast clients like Mycelium or Electrum if you value convenience more than security.

Agreed 100%. I'm actually very happy with Armory going back to the first version I ever downloaded and used.

Try setting up in a virtual machine or in another computer.  BTW always have the latest version of Armory running.  I feel sorry for you since it took me 44  hours to install Armory (before it was online) since the blockchain had to be downloaded... such is the price of progress?

Oh, I have it running on another system, and have the offline installed on an air gapped computer as well. My only concern is that it just stopped opening up, and won't let me no matter what I try.

I'll add some memory to that computer this evening and see if that does the trick, but I was hoping someone might have some other idea.

Thanks!
77  Bitcoin / Armory / Armory won't open. Help! on: October 22, 2014, 04:36:55 PM
So last night I tried running my online Armory, and I got an error message directing me to the log file, which read:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "ArmoryQt.py", line 32, in <module>
File "armoryengine.pyc", line 498, in <module>
File "armoryengine.pyc", line 480, in chopLogFile
MemoryError

I tried running it in offline mode, but the same thing happened.

I tried deleting the databases, no joy.

I tried installing a newer version of Armory, no joy.

I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling both older and newer versions, no joy.

I opened a ticket through the Armory website, but they must be busy, because... no joy.

Running on a Windows 7 machine with 8 gigs of ram that are apparently healthy.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

3 years ago, give or take a couple days, I was sitting at a Father's Day BBQ, having just hurt my back a few hours before, watching in shock as the price of BTC plummeted while everyone around me was enjoying the day, blissfully oblivious. Over the next few days I went from disappointment to joy when I realised I was able to buy BTC at $2 again. Ah, the good old days :-)
