Maybe

"Maybe" is not a good argument. Why should your "maybe" be of significance?

Hey look, in 2009 that same conference center had an expo called "MONEY EXPO Pattaya 2009" - by Thailand's first bank. Must be a really bad place for conferences, especially about money.

362  Economy / Speculation / Re: Here we go again, another major price drop for bitcoins on: August 28, 2011, 05:36:21 PM
Let's say in your world of black and white we decide to flip a coin and sell. How many should I sell? All available? Half of them? 14.5892% of them?

Irrelevant for the argument. I still believe it's the "functionally equivalent" part you're having problems with. Since I have no idea what your education level is I don't know how best to explain it.

You know that absolutely everything you can do with a computer is in reality done by just flipping bits, right? In the same way everything you can possible dream up with trading strategies boils down to "buy and sell".

I believe another poster referenced a book on the topic, where they show how traders don't outperform chance. I suggest you go read it if you want more details.

So basically what you are saying is that people are ignorant if they are worried a bitcoin conference in a world wide known
sexual tourist destination might be a bad idea?

No, I'm saying they're ignorant because they claim Amsterdam is only known for drugs & sex, Pattaya is only known for child prostitution, New York is only known for drug related gang wars, San Francisco is only known as a great place to meet friendly bums, Moscow is only known as the place where former KGB agents assassinate journalists etc.

Feel free to answer the question I wrote to you earlier:

If Pattaya is such an obviously bad place for a conference, why is one of Thailand's biggest and most modern conference centres there?

Why is a Bitcoin conference so important to you?

It isn't and I have no interest whatsoever in visiting Pattaya. I just dislike ignorance, and "many people are ignorant" is not a good argument Smiley

(I will go to the conference in Amsterdam though, since I go to conferences there regularly anyway)
365  Economy / Speculation / Re: No, just the usual long, slow slide on: August 28, 2011, 05:08:36 PM

This is normal post-bubble behavior.

Are you claiming there's predictive information in that graph?

I can only assume you were on the barricades in the year 2000 telling everyone that the gold bubble had burst.

(My point has nothing to do with gold per se, only with predictions-based-on-graphs)
366  Other / Off-topic / Re: Pattaya on: August 28, 2011, 04:43:28 PM
Oh Come on. Just go up to this post by worldly, to take just one example. This person hasn't just done some search on "conferences in Pattaya" but has actually been there.

Can you find the other posts from people who live in Thailand and who say it's no major issue and it's a good place due to the communications anyway yourself?

could possibly, even just remotely,
be a poor choice

All places can be "remotely" bad choices. When people started to object it was Amsterdam. "It's all just sex and drugs!!!11". To a European, that's simply a joke. The same people continuing to object to Pattaya doesn't make the argument stronger.

If Pattaya is such an obviously bad place for a conference, why is one of Thailand's biggest and most modern conference centres there?

367  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How safe is it to store a KeePassX file on dropbox? on: August 28, 2011, 04:38:36 PM
When you put something online, expect everyone accessing it, especially if you put online your wallet! That's why if you put online something you MUST encrypt it.

Just to reiterate though; Wuala and LastPass use client side encryption. It's the same as if you first encrypt your files manually and then put them on Dropbox. You just skip the manual part of it.

368  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help me liberate bitcoins from my Android Phone on: August 28, 2011, 04:13:07 PM

Maybe we are using different versions of software or app here. What exact APP and version number are you using?

I have had issues with it.  It worked smoothly a few times...  a few .1 transactions disappeared into the great nothing from the never ending story.  I was just sending a few .1 btc back and forth to test it, and a lot of other people have complained so I don't know what the variance is causing the trouble... but it's not working smoothly for a lot of people according to reviews.

I'm using Bitcoin Wallet and, of course, always the latest version.

(In Bitcoin, sending small amounts back and forth to yourself is seldom a good idea since it looks like spam to the system. You might end up in a situation where, if you don't add large fees, your transactions won't go through for a long time)

With regards to complaints, remember than when things work no one bothers to post. Reviews are thus always skewed.
369  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: $80 Android Phone Sells Like Hotcakes in Kenya on: August 28, 2011, 04:10:48 PM
BUT, what the article didn't say was how much they are paying for their service contracts.  That is why an $80 phone doesn't cost $80.

You do know the rest of the world is slightly bigger than the US, and that not everything in that "the rest of the World" works just the same as things work in the US?

This would be one of those things.
370  Other / Off-topic / Re: Pattaya on: August 28, 2011, 04:08:24 PM
what is your definition of "trolling"?

Posting just to get reactions, of course. The definition of trolling goes back decades.

As far as I see it, besides belonging to the US far religious right there's no reason for anyone to have any opinions on one out of several places for a conference. If you personally don't like the place (I don't) - then don't go.

371  Economy / Speculation / Re: Here we go again, another major price drop for bitcoins on: August 28, 2011, 03:17:45 PM
It's exactly people with such beliefs allow some analysts to outperform chance.

None. If you want to claim differently, feel free to prove your point. Start with understanding chance, though.

Someone skilled in the art of money management can be profitable even if only 30% of trades go their way.

Because they know when/how to cut the losing trades, and let the winning trades run.

Which is exactly functionally equivalent to "buy and sell". If you need "functionally equivalent" to be explained just let me know and I'll try to use other words.
372  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New coins from old backup wallet.dat what gives? on: August 28, 2011, 03:15:53 PM
Am I doing something wrong?  Note these are not two separately created wallets - I have those.. this is the same wallet, just a backup of a day earlier.

The Bitcoin terminology is the problem. They're not wallets, they're keyrings with a lot of keys. Initially your keyring gets populated with 100 keys, all able to unlock 100 vaults. Whenever you use one key, another one gets added (and none removed) from your keyring.

Thus even your oldest backup contains the keys to the next 100 transactions (=vault contents) you do. That the client can become confused when you start switching keyrings back and forth is not a problem - just run -rescan.

Is this also in reference to his name choice--The_Duke--and that Hollywood is often referred to as Babylon?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=39624.msg484698#msg484698

(As to the coordinated posts by The Duke, "Matthew" etc above, sorry guys, well known trolls posting in support of well known trolls just makes what you write all the more ignorable)
374  Other / Off-topic / Re: Pattaya on: August 28, 2011, 11:56:18 AM
Hard to argue with such intentions.

Well. So far you've managed to prove to us all that your knowledge about the world comes from Hollywood Smiley I agree you would have a hard time arguing successfully about pretty much everything.

375  Economy / Speculation / Re: Here we go again, another major price drop for bitcoins on: August 28, 2011, 09:51:21 AM
being a good trader is about knowing whether to buy or sell.

is functionally equivalent to

Quote
"So, if it starts to move up, what is your exposure and entry point and stop loss/take profit levels, or, if it starts to move down, what are your exposure amounts, entry point and stop loss/take profit levels, Jim?"

376  Economy / Speculation / Re: Here we go again, another major price drop for bitcoins on: August 28, 2011, 09:20:53 AM
It is no chance if someone has consistently a track record of over 70% success.

This is based on statistics.

And no: I don't think that for just being 70% right I deserve a Nobel price.

Thank you for proving conclusively that you have absolutely no idea what chance is Smiley With enough analysists, someone will - by pure chance - outperform the market for X time. It's still completely expected, and is no different from flipping coins. It does not in any way point to the analyst using a method which has predictive power.

(I'm also quite positive your track record isn't 70%, but that's beside the actual point)

This comic describes the situation pretty well:

377  Economy / Speculation / Re: Here we go again, another major price drop for bitcoins on: August 28, 2011, 08:48:34 AM
Repeat: No analyst ever has outperformed chance. Ever.
Now you made my day. I can't stop laughing. Grin

"You don't understand chance".

If you disagree with the above, feel free to prove your statements. If you can, you will get a Nobel Prize.
378  Economy / Speculation / Re: Here we go again, another major price drop for bitcoins on: August 28, 2011, 08:46:03 AM
defxor seems to think that being a good trader is about knowing whether to buy or sell. It isn't.

Thanks for being funny.

Chance is a really weird way of saying something has a cause.

What?

"Chance" is that if you have a thousand people flip coins, some will flip more heads than others. It doesn't mean they're "better" at flipping coins.

Repeat: No analyst ever has outperformed chance. Ever. No one has ever shown that their analysis method has predictive powers. Ever.

If you disagree with the above, feel free to prove your statements. If you can, you will get a Nobel Prize.

Thanks for the reply, although I would like evoohees to confirm that this is the one he was referring to, since there are a few of them available.

Until he replies I can use the same terminology; Bitcoin Wallet is indeed a wonderful Android Bitcoin app. I've used it for quite some time.

380  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New coins from old backup wallet.dat what gives? on: August 28, 2011, 07:42:16 AM
Ok so I regularly backup my wallet.dat and I also have some other wallet.dat savings where I created a new wallet and sent it coins then offlined it.

Since I spent a bunch of bitcoins lately by wallet was at 0 so just out of curiosity I renamed the wallet.dat backup.wallet.dat and then grabbed my last backup when I had like 25 btc in it

The 25 btc are there? What gives?

It's the same wallet key just a backup should this not be.. I should still see 0 right?

And no, this is not one of my savings wallets with transferred money this is just a daily backup before I spent the 25.

It's likely just tricking you, not understanding the keys it has have been used from another copy. Run the client with -rescan
