101  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTS]Some coins, Casascius, Lealana, Crypto Imperator... on: March 16, 2015, 01:27:45 AM
Not trying to be a thread crapper or anything, but you can get a brass halve (casascius) for .8 BTC on camolist's thread and they are fresh off the roll.

His is graded already though, some people are willing to pay a premium for a graded coin.
I guess that is fair enough. Is it difficult to get a MS-64 rating on a brass coin? Is that a good rating?
102  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BurtW arrested on: March 16, 2015, 01:25:16 AM
There are a number of legit things that would have caused them to have that kind of cash in their home. Primarily it could be for bitcoin trading. They also apparently have a lot of money so it could be the equivalent of their "emergency" fund.

His wife said on her website that one of her client's (work) sites were searched which caused the client to fire her company which cost her company millions of dollars. If they have millions of dollars to lose then they probably have enormous amounts of money. If your company makes millions of dollars then $30k really doesn't sound like that much.

I do think that they probably do have the resources to make heads roll, assuming that Burt really was not involved in anything that was actually illegal (meaning he was not involved in SR2, or any other dark market site at all). It appears that a number of people make mistakes throughout the case, most interestingly the magistrate who apparently authorized search warrants without probable cause to seize attorney-client privileged information, and then the proper procedures were not followed when such information was taken
I kinda don't mind "legit" or "illegit". I'm interested in "sane". I can fully understand the grey market economy and life (all the way back to plight of Jews during WWII).

Keeping 30k$ at home with no obvious use or as an "emergency fund"? This just doesn't seem sane. Or it is a symptom of being disconnected and alienated from the extended family, neighbors, friends, etc.

Is there any more information about "wife's client's (work) sites that were searched"? I don't care about specifics, just the general business sector and the purpose of keeping funds in cash there.

Again, I'm not interested about legality or illegality. I'm more about the sanity and purpose of the lifestyle.

Well I would say that would not be all that uncommon for people with a lot of money, as much as they apparently have, to keep such a large amount of cash at home.

A 'sane' reason to keep that much money at home would be for bitcoin trading purposes, as it would probably be a bit of a hassle to have to go to the bank every time burt wanted to buy or sell large amounts of bitcoin, plus the fact that making a lot of cash deposits and withdrawals out of a personal account (he wouldn't have a business account because he was only doing it as a 'hobby') is a good way to get your bank account closed.

I am not sure what exactly Burt's wife's company does, not what the client does. Both the businesses names were redacted (and the locations Huh ) in a letter that she wrote and published in a different section on her site. I would say there is a good chance that it would be difficult/impossible to determine exactly what they do.
103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How long did it take for Satoshi to make the blockchain? on: March 16, 2015, 01:14:22 AM
The design and coding started in 2007.
Well it is speculated that Satoshi had posted on an internet forum about the concept of bitcoin in the early 2000's, around the time that paypal first came out.

As Cryddit says, we don't know for sure.  Of all the possibilities though, I strongly favour the idea that Satoshi was simply telling the truth.
I personally don't think it was him in that forum post. I think it is more likely that it was just someone throwing ideas around after PP was becoming a 'hit'

Please be your own image host, externals suck..
Sounds like you want a way to hack the forum. This is how the forum was hacked in late 2013 and would likely be very vulnerable to additional hacks.
Oh, and start a bitcointalk wallet so we can all just stay here.. built into the site obviously
Also a bad idea. People should 100% control their private keys. Plus it would cause the forum to be more aggressive in restoring accounts when they are hacked, but it is very difficult to know for sure if an account is in fact hacked or not.
106  Other / Meta / Re: Trust on: March 16, 2015, 12:57:09 AM
Your missing the point. This system (trust) is clearly, and by admission of many, not just used to help people decide if folks are trustworthy, but to tarnish the reputation of people who simply do not do business online, and those receiving this abuse, if they ever wanted to do business here, they would be put off doing business with the ENTIRE bitcointalk community, for not a lot of folks know who is who really, do they..?
The trust system is to help someone decide if they are trustworthy or not. If you exhibit scam like behavior then you should expect to get negative trust and have your reputation ruined. If you do have negative trust then people will likely take additional precautions when dealing with you, making it more difficult for you to scam.
Ok, I volunteer to be the moderator for the trust system, and I'll have one rule.. if someone is slandered using the trust system, and there is clearly no business intention viewable by the public, then those doing the neg repping will be banned outright.
There is not a shortage of people who are willing to moderate the forum. There is the concern about moderation abuse of the trust system.

As I mentioned above, if you must do business with someone in order to leave a trust rating then it will be impossible to stop someone from scamming (like yourself) in the first place.
107  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BurtW arrested on: March 16, 2015, 12:52:46 AM
I understand and agree but why are they hiding the warrant with the patriot act? We can't even find out what they were really searching for! Even the family can't find out what they were looking for. Very odd.
That is one of the "features" (for a lack of a better term) of the patriot act. Everything is kept out of the public's view. I wouldn't be surprised if Burt and/or his attorney knows the contents of what they were looking for and possibly the basis for the warrant (this might not even be true - I am not that familiar with the law). I would say however if/when the case is resolved outside of court that a stipulation be that he agrees not to speak publicly about the case.

His wife said on the video on her website that they took over 700 BTC and $30,000 in cash from their home. I am somewhat surprised that he didn't have the BTC better protected.

Someone postulated, the reason Burt spent two 'extra' days in fed detention was to force him to handover his private keys.  When they snatched all of his electronic recording devices they likely found the wallet(s) and demanded the keys.
This is possible. But I don't think it was a good idea for him to give them up. It only would have given the government evidence against him, and he could have filed a writ of habeas corpus to get released, or at least a fair bail hearing.
As for that stipulation, why would you ask Burt to stipulate to that?   Speaking about what he endured should be required learning for everyone in the btc world, especially those trading with localbitcoins.
I would not ask him to stipulate that. The government would. They probably would make that stipulate that so that heads would not roll (eg be held accountable) as a result of the case. The way that her wife painted the situation (which I would say it probably somewhat biased - I cannot say with any amount of certainty how accurate it is), a lot of people in various branches of the government did things they probably shouldn't have done, some may even argue that would warrant jail time.
If we as the CC universe don't take some measures to end this type of abuse it will spread to other countries.  I would not be surprised if Germany isn't telling Greece to consider the American law that confiscates bitcoins from anyone not properly licensed to sell them.
What is "CC"?
108  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BurtW arrested on: March 16, 2015, 12:47:12 AM
$30,000 in cash from their home
30k$ at their own home? Wife is a lawyer/paralegal? This is getting interesting.

Anyone care to speculate what would be the use of 30k$ to be kept at home? AFAIK nobody in the family was running a cash-based small business. I know people occasionally keeping much more than that at home, but they are in the cash-intensive business not involving Bitcoins.

There are a number of legit things that would have caused them to have that kind of cash in their home. Primarily it could be for bitcoin trading. They also apparently have a lot of money so it could be the equivalent of their "emergency" fund.

Why use the patriot act at all? Are money transmitting licenses regulated by DHS now? The only they would ever say what was in the warrant was if they found exactly what they were looking for.
Well that is the strange thing. There were a number of law enforcement agencies that were involved that probably shouldn't have been. I would say there is a good chance that the government at least though that Burt was involved in a lot worse things then what he was charged with. Based on the number of both agents and law enforcement agencies, they probably at least thought that he was somehow involved in Silk Road (I think he was arrested right around the time that the guy from SR2 was arrested).
As for getting the btc there is a simple way to do it that always eludes geeks.

Yea I get that, however the government is only allowed to do so much. I think it was said above that he was put in solitary confinement for two days (and his wife did mention that as well), so it is possible that he gave up the keys during this time.

I would think however that it would have been smarter for him to plead the 5th when asked how to access the private keys, as with the private keys the public addresses can be calculated, and with the public addresses, in theory it would be possible to link transactions to a crime that he was alleged to have committed, so giving up the private keys could be considered testifying against himself which you cannot be forced to do.

110  Other / Meta / Re: Trust on: March 16, 2015, 12:27:16 AM
LOL. The trust system is not moderated, and I can say with a good amount of certainty that it is not going to be moderated in the new forum either.

If you had to actually do business with someone in order to leave them trust then it would be impossible to stop someone from scamming in the first place

Ulbricht’s Lead Defense Asks For A Re-Trial
http://bitforum.info/t/ulbrichts-lead-defense-asks-for-a-re-trial/386

Do you think Ross is worthy for a re-trial?

I think Dratel is just too desperate to turn the verdict around. Jury had their decision within 4 hours. I mean, even the jury is convinced.

The article said that they court will respond before April, PredictIt.Org should make this a betting game.

Will Ulbricht get a re-trial or not?

Unlikely. It's not clear what legal error Ulbricht. Being prohibited from testifying to irrelevant crap like the war on drugs is a no-go; the late expert disclosures are not an abuse of discretion. I don't know what other errors are being alleged, besides the Brady violations alleged in OP's link. It's not clear what the nature of the Brady claim is though, from OP's link.
There were plenty of legal errors in the case. The specific legal error that was claimed in this specific filing was the fact that some evidence was given to the defense at the last minute and as a result the defense team was not able to put on a proper defense.
113  Other / Meta / Re: please stop ban me in all new accounts on: March 15, 2015, 06:12:04 PM
so sir ,

you suggest me what to do now to come back in this forum without any problem

you cant come back to the forum , because perma bann means a warning for a person to stay out from this forum, Only the admin can make a decision about this and you already know badbear's answer, so makin another account here and posting multiple thread will only make him more annoyed by you
this is your decision mods you will ban my account i will creating new and new

i will not do scam but will spam this forum from next time

This isn't the way to handle this. BadBear sometimes revokes perma bans if users stay away or behave (though this isn't guaranteed) but this sort of attitude is only going to cause you more damage and frustration especially when/if your new accounts are found out and banned yet again. Threatening to spam the forum really isn't the way to go about this. Edit: Just saw your other thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=989855.0  Roll Eyes
You should leave for at least 30 days, stop evading your ban and then ask nicely. The fact that you threatened to spam the forum are not improving your chances of having your ban(s) lifted though.
114  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin Venture Capital per Quarter is Exploding :) on: March 15, 2015, 06:05:22 PM
This is great and all but I'd much rather see a chart covering the explosion in new users buying btc for the first time.
I don't think it is really possible for someone to measure this figure. If people are correctly using bitcoin (not reusing old addresses) then almost all transactions should look like someone might be buying bitcoin for the first time.

I would like to see this growth continue to be sure that the numbers are not artificially higher because of only one or two big deals

I am confused. He just repaid his loan today but is taking out another similarly sized loan the very same day? Are you sure that this person is not one of your alts  Cheesy

I make these posts for my own reference (check the links in the OP). Since I can now post again (I loaned this user while I couldn't post), I am making these reference posts now. The loans were actually spaced 2 weeks apart if you check the dates.

I am sure it is not an alt of mine.
I just find it very strange that he is requesting so many loans, especially when he has not even logged into his account Huh He is probably trying to build up trust to eventually pull off a large scam

FYI to the OP - satoshi did not actually "make" the blockchain, the blockchain is the data of the various blocks and is growing roughly once every 10 minutes, by a maximum of 1MB each time it grows. It seems that most people have answered on here as if you were referring to the Bitcoin protocol

I would suggest removing/banning him as a scammer advertising for your company is going to give your company a bad name

It takes a lot of time to get to legendary. I wouldnt sell the hardwork i've put on that account unless some lucrative offer comes.

120  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Sites that can generate vanity addresses for free? on: March 15, 2015, 02:27:58 PM
Websites that allow free vanity address generation are not to be trusted if they don't use the split key technique.
It really doesn't matter if the site is 'free' or not. Unless the address is calculated locally (and uses local processing power) then it must use the split key technique, otherwise funds in your vanity address are all but certain to get stolen
