21  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It's time to reinstate trading fees on: July 14, 2011, 09:30:57 AM
How can someone think that fees create volatility?

Every single transaction where there is a fee causes an erosion in price that has to be made up by additional funds entering the market for the price to remain the same.

The argument, I suppose, is that the bots are ultra-stabilizing the markets by buying and selling with intent to only make a micro sliver of profit with no worry of fees. Their volume is so high that normal traders can't move the market. I think this view is silly. Bots can only do so much, and volume is low. This clearly isn't what is happening. Things are just slow.
22  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why google should endorse Bitcoins (and probably hates visa) on: July 14, 2011, 08:59:30 AM
problem is NO one knows about bitcoin, i know its hard to imagine but its true.
try asking 100,000 people if they know about bitcoin... maybe you'll get one bitcoiner!?
This is certainly too low - that's probably even below the fraction of active Bitcoin users worldwide!
I guess by now I personally have told more than 0.001% of the population of my country about Bitcoin already Wink

I have not met anyone, IRL, that knows about bitcoin unless they heard it from me. I think that the number of people who know of bitcoin is still very low in every population besides the tech crowd.

so... the free market (as opposed to the "free" market) resumes on august 10th.

can't come soon enough...

I don't see why you are waiting for the 10th. July 28th has fees at .3%. There is nothing special about .65%.

I find it very bizarre that people are _asking_ mt gox to charge a fee. Very, very weird.

we'll see what 0.3% does.  not enough, methinks.

i think the point though, is that the bots are essentially uncrackable at 0% (and probably close to uncrackable at 0.3%).  the market is too thin right now, and regular folks just can't get past the ha'penny walls.

besides... it's boring.

Lower fees should increase liquidity and volume. The current action isn't completely due to the fees. Things are just slow.
24  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Spreading Bitcoin to....JAPAN??? on: July 14, 2011, 08:05:13 AM
Bitcoin should be popular in japan.  and it's got nothing to do with Satoshi.

it should be popular because the japanese are always at the bleeding edge of tech.  especially phone (Bitcoin for android...) tech.

I think that because they are on the edge of technology, they actually have several more realized alternatives. In the long run, bitcoin is a better system. In the short run, they have simpler methods of doing similar things. Like simple bank account to bank account transfers, and phone payment systems. I think bitcoin will beat these alternatives, but only when more fully formed.

Hmm... it is interesting that they use the term "hackcrash", because a quick forum search show that I am pretty much the only person that has used it, and I definitely have first use. I just going to go ahead and say I coined the term because it makes me sound cool.

July 27th isn't that much longer than expected.
27  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Someone is flooding twitter with bitcoin statuses on: July 14, 2011, 07:41:40 AM
I guess you could ask the same of spammers who send emails containing no links. Not the same, but similar and it begs a big "WHY?"

YEAH! I'd love to understand the purpose of these ridiculous emails...

They often have embedded php 'images', too small to see. When you load the email, you call the php page with your email as a variable. This shows that the email address is active, and that the person who owns the email opens stuff from random people. This makes the address very valuable. They can then send their first waves of real spam to that address knowing that it will have the maximum effect at good addresses before it starts getting filtered. It also makes their lists more valuable for sale.

This is why places like google block images by default -- they can be used against you.

But that is only some of them. I'm pretty sure I've gotten those random emails without an embedded image too. No idea what the purpose is. To check if it bounces?

Mtgox just announced an extension to this fee free period.

Goxed.

Really? Can I get a link?
29  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It's time to reinstate trading fees on: July 14, 2011, 07:26:54 AM
When are the fees going to be reinstated? July 25-26?

Yeah. I'm sure mt gox is pretty sick of working for free. They'll make it as soon as possible.
30  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bots have stalled Bitcoin trading on MtGox @ $14.02 on: July 14, 2011, 07:25:28 AM
I don't see the problem. If you think 14.02 is a low price, buy. If you think it is a high price, sell. Never mind the bots, the market will sort it all out.
I'm quiet fine with whatever value BTC is.  re "the market will sort it all out" - aren't we the market?

Collectively, yes. Which is my point. The price is $14 because many of us think it should be. If a lot more were willing to buy the prices would move up, bots be damned. Same with selling.

In any case, I don't think bots are completely to blame for the price stability. A big buy, or a big sell, could still move the market.
31  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bots have stalled Bitcoin trading on MtGox @ $14.02 on: July 14, 2011, 07:19:59 AM
I thought stability was desired. Two days and you're already complaining?

Nah fuck stability. Volatility separates the men from the boys.

LOL, I see now.

catch22, it looks like we are not ready for stability because there is no marketplaces developed yet. people want action =)

agree with OP, want to run bots - pay for it

I don't see the problem. If you think 14.02 is a low price, buy. If you think it is a high price, sell. Never mind the bots, the market will sort it all out.
33  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It's time to reinstate trading fees on: July 14, 2011, 07:12:43 AM
What is the problem? The price stability? Isn't that what everyone was saying bitcoin needed? Two days and you've had enough? Plus, I'm not sure bots and low fees are 100% behind the price stability.

Anyway, the fees will be coming back soon.
34  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: On Wednesday, Bitcoin was less volatile than US Dollar. on: July 14, 2011, 07:09:57 AM
If bitcoin grows, it will evolve a market a lot like the metals market. That is simply how an efficient, well integrated market behaves. Bitcoin is only disconnected in its obscurity.
The gold/silver market are rigged - Didn't you know?

Well, that might also be how large markets work.

how hard is it to make free transactions now? what client will allow me to do this?

Any client lets you make free transactions, as long as it larger than 0.01 bitcoins.
37  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: In addition to "Who is John Galt?": "Who is Satoshi Nakamoto?" on: July 14, 2011, 06:16:08 AM
No Idea but i think Satoshi Nakamoto is a Japanese.

No, that's an Irish name if I ever heard one.
38  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I noticed some CampBX ads... on: July 14, 2011, 06:14:38 AM
It all comes down to trust. I like that they are atleast registered as a business verses just completely being underground and hosting in some jungle camp and so far appear to have a very professional looking operation in place. Anything else after that is personal willingness to take risk in a new company, just like any thing else.

Indeed. I actually am already a member, and have deposited 5 BTC.

Rock on, am considering liquidating some to move over that way myself.  I am most interested in seeing if the market can stay liquid enough to run some short buys or margins that wont give me a stroke.

Liquidity is not currently their strong point. But hopefully that will change. Their order options are really great. Good enough for me to make them my primary exchange when the liquidity picks up.

40  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If BTC ends year 12-31-2011 at 1 it will on: July 14, 2011, 06:06:13 AM
still be a 333% gain for the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BTC started the year at $0.3.  If it ends the year at 10, it will be a 3333% move.  In comparison, gold was $18.93 in 1833.  Today it is  $1586.   If gold was $47.58 on January 1st, the price would be $1586 with a 3333% move.   You have to go back to 1971 for that price.  For BTC was to go to $25.13, the move would be equal the move of gold 1833 to present.

In summary, if BTC ends the year at 1.0 it will be one of the best investments for the year.

Let's hope and see.

Let's hope for $1? I think not.
