i had an ubuntu box that was ok running phoenix

but i like cgminer more, so i wanted to compile it (it has ubuntu x86)

I tried, but failed, because ncurses version was not correct.

I then upgraded from 10.04 to 10.11 (all through ssh)

After reinstalling the drivers (ssh -X), i was able to compile cgminer.

but i cant start mining, except with cpu only (on 2.1.2, 2.2.3 has no cpu support i think), it tells me that there is no valid gpu available.

I tried automatically starting cgminer with screen and upstart (like i was told arroung page 178 to 180).

It gives the same error.

i then tried with the same trick i used on debian, and nothing happens.

Im not sure if this PC with ubuntu has any trouble with not having a display connected.

did you accept the 'sdk license?'

when, where and how am i supposed to do that ? don't remember doing it on my debian machine.

This ubuntu pc is at my parents house (i moved last week xD), and has no display attached right now.

Important to mention tho, is that right now, i can't use phoenix either.

And ati commands for OC and such, fail as the "normal user" telling me that i MUST start X if i want to run them without being "su", and if i run them with "sudo", they fail too.

I guess that my only choice is to go back, plug a display, and see what happens Tongue

I tried with "cgminer web monitor", but it tells me that my VGAs are offline.
...
What options did you use to run cgminer?
You of course need --api-listen before anything will work.
You need --api-network if the monitoring tool is on a different computer or if the monitoring tool doesn't allow 127.0.0.1 when it is on the same computer

Edit: I'm thinking of adding --api-allow IP[/N],IP2[/N2]...
not sure about deprecating --api-network - but probably easiest to just leave it (unless ckolivas has a preference about that)

i used both options, and this: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=58834.0

that one did not work.

Then with the same options, anubis worked.

i guess its not posible to use it to read more than one pc, right?

Kano code is just an "example" (Kano wrote the RPC code for cgminer BTW).  Other people have written multi-rig management/reporting tools which use the RPC functionality in cgminer.  There are two web based tools and BAMT uses RPC for both web based tools and console tools.

Code:

                  Temp    Load  Rate     Accept/Invalid    Status

                5: 62c      99%  330 Mhs  375/1 (0.27%)
Total: 8968.82 Mhash/s  183140 accepted, 396 invalid (0.22%)

This is the multi-rig monitoring view in BAMT.  Also the nice thing about the RPC code (I organized the bounty project BTW) is that if existing solutions don't do what you want it to do, you (or someone else) can also write another one.  Since the RPC API is a standardized set of queries it doesn't require modifying the cgminer to implement new "front ends".

Off topic:  192.168.0.183's GPU #0 must have bad VRM.  Sad.  It will thermally cut out for a second or so every 20 or 30 seconds.  The core is not running too hot so it makes me think it is the VRMs.  Since mpgumon only gets updates once every 30 seconds or so it will either show 99% or 0% depending on timing.  I have dropped that GPU back to stock but it keeps "cycling" on & off.  I think it is degraded.

So after 9 months on mining with 30 GPU (15x 15970s) I have two "degraded" GPUs.  GPU #0 on .183 rig and GPU #5 on the .184 rig (which will crash about once a day - hard hang even on stock w/ low temps).  I also have "lost" 2 fans.  Be interesting to see what my "attrition" will be at the one year mark.

Will look into that.

I tried with "cgminer web monitor", but it tells me that my VGAs are offline.

Then i installed anubis, flashy and nice, but i would preffer not to have mysql installed.

- Update example web miner.php to use new API commands
Anyone who used the old one this one should be interesting to look at once or twice Smiley
(I of course use it to view the status of my rig since it's all in one page)
Of course there are other more complex ones out there for pure display only
This one also happens to allow you to change everything that the API allows (unless I missed something Tongue)

looks neat

i guess its not posible to use it to read more than one pc, right?

Im runnung Debian 6...

I gave up messing with init scripts that start screen sessions and put this in my /etc/rc.local instead
Code:
su - user -c "/path/to/cgminer/start/script.sh"

Oh, and i use command line arguments, because either on windows or linux, even after saving the config, it ignores me Sad (cgminer always asks for input)

This is usually because you have a syntax error in your config.  You can see what the errors are if you specify the config.

Code:
cgminer -c ~/.cgminer/cgminer.conf

I don't know why it is built this way.  IMO, when you fail to parse a config, you should fail out, not act like there was no config.

Thx about the config, i fixed it, much nicer now XD

Putting

Code:
su - rcocchiararo -c "/home/rcocchiararo/bitcoin/startcg.sh"

in rc.local seems to do nothing.

Running that from a "root terminal" (inside rcocchiararo GUI loggin) nets me a CPU mining session

Code:
[2012-02-05 12:18:17] Error: Getting Device IDs (num)
[2012-02-05 12:18:17] clDevicesNum returned error, none usable
[2012-02-05 12:18:17] Started cgminer 2.1.2

My script has:

Code:
#!/bin/bash
export AMDAPPSDKROOT=/opt/AMD-APP-SDK-v2.4-lnx32/
export AMDAPPSDKSAMPLESROOT=/opt/AMD-APP-SDK-v2.4-lnx32/
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${AMDAPPSDKROOT}lib/x86:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}

export DISPLAY=:0

cgminer 2>>/var/log/cgminer.log

Maybe something from my "exports" is not ok ? i mean, just running "cgminer" from a terminal with my user (rcocchiararo) makes it work. (i once had the exports in .bashrc, but i no longer do).

also, i believe, at least on my debian system, it wont work to have that in rc.local, because it would be similar to double clicking my script and telling it to "run" instead of "run in terminal". If i do that, this is what happens:

Code:
[2012-02-05 12:02:55] Started cgminer 2.1.2
[2012-02-05 12:02:56] Long-polling activated for http://pit.deepbit.net:8332/listenChannel
Error opening terminal: unknown.

I tried using rc.local to launch screen, but similar things happen, i THINK i got it to run, but it was only with CPU (manually i can confirm it, unless i run it from my users terminal).

Maybe the fact that root is unable to login with GUI in debian (at least debian 6) causes cgminer some headaches ?

I tried:

Code:
su - rcocchiararo -c "/usr/bin/screen -dmS Miner /home/rcocchiararo/bitcoin/startcg.sh rcocchiararo"

Still, the last "rcocchiararo" seems to do nothing, because i changed that to "pepe" and i even ran:

Code:
/usr/bin/screen -dmS Miner /home/rcocchiararo/bitcoin/startcg.sh pepe

And the user who was running cgminer according to "top" was the one who launched the command (rcocchiararo, not pepe).

Im runnung Debian 6

With the following script, i understand that i get the same thing you indicated:

Code:
#! /bin/sh
### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides:          cgminer
# Required-Start:    $all
# Required-Stop:     $remote_fs $syslog
# Default-Start:     2 3 4 5
# Default-Stop:      0 1 6
# Short-Description: mining
# Description:       Start BTC Mining
### END INIT INFO

script
  sleep 15
  cd /home/rcocchiararo/bitcoin
  exec /usr/bin/screen -dmS Miner su -c /home/rcocchiararo/bitcoin/startcg.sh rcocchiararo
end script

This won't work as a sh script because the script keyword is an Upstart conf file function. You would want to take out both script/end script. I don't know offhand if Debian has Upstart but if it does then the best practice would be to use that by putting this as a conf file in /etc/init. If it doesn't then you could rewrite it as a script by removing the "script / end script" and taking out exec so it just calls screen. I don't think exec is a sh command either. Upstart conf file is not the same as a script.

The cgminer config writer doesn't write a fully working config unfortunately. You have to tweak some values - particularly zero ones. My version here does actually write a working config even with engine/memory values that work. But my version of the code is considered too dangerous by ckolivas to include in the mainline since it reads current ADL values to put in the config. There may be instances/cards where it causes problems - for my 5830s it works ok.

I thought that might be the case, thats why i tried with and without script/exec, and i still failed Sad

-------------

EDIT: success!

Finally, by setting a "startup application" to run:

Code:
/usr/bin/screen -dmS Miner /home/rcocchiararo/bitcoin/startcg.sh rcocchiararo

Now my home server mines after rcocchiararo auto logins (that was already configured, but without screen, i had the "no terminal" issue.

weird if the config file is wrong, cause i made cgminer write it out, but oh well, i will see that tomorow also.

im a failure :/

No worries, trial & error is a learning process - personally, I'd rather fail and learn than succeed without understanding why. Try going through this thread and experiment with different methods, then choose the one that works best for you.
I've posted this before in this thread but I guess every now and then it's helpful to refresh as it's a long topic and hard to read everything.

Assuming Ubuntu, which now uses Upstart the correct way to start cgminer at boot is with a conf file located in /etc/init. This doesn't require any auto-login or other stuff. Just one simple extra file in the right place. Here is a working example that I have used for many months,

/etc/init/miner.conf
Code:
description     "Start BTC Mining"

start on runlevel [2345]
stop on runlevel [016]
kill timeout 30
script
  sleep 15
  cd /home/ubuntu
  exec /usr/bin/screen -dmS Miner su -c /usr/local/bin/startcg ubuntu
end script
Note above it runs as user "ubuntu" but you should replace that with your user name. It is more secure to not run as root user, which would be the default during an init process like this. The "sleep" I have there is to allow time for X to be started at boot. There is a better way but this works fine too. I use "screen" to allow me to remote in with ssh and attach/detach as desired. If you're not familiar with that then google it. You can not bother with screen but then it's harder to login remotely and see realtime status. Also, if it's not already installed then "sudo apt-get install screen" would be needed before using this.

This conf file starts cgminer by running the startcg script. You can put what you need in there. Mine contains:
Code:
#!/bin/bash

export AMDAPPSDKROOT=/home/ubuntu/AMD-APP-SDK-v2.4-lnx32/
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${AMDAPPSDKROOT}lib/x86:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}
export DISPLAY=:0

cgminer 2>>/var/log/cgminer.log
Yours may be a bit different but typically pretty similar to this. I use cgminer.conf but some people like to use the cmd line args in this file instead.

Useful things to know:
To start mining manually: sudo start miner
To attach to cgminer after remote login: sudo screen -r
(I make an alias for this, alias mm='sudo screen -r' and put it in .bashrc file)
To detach from within cgminer: <ctrl>A D
You can disable starting at boot by renaming the conf file, eg. mv miner.conf miner.conf.down
(that's handy when changing GPU cards so they don't start with wrong settings).

Im runnung Debian 6

With the following script, i understand that i get the same thing you indicated:

Code:
#! /bin/sh
### BEGIN INIT INFO

  sleep 15
  cd /home/rcocchiararo/bitcoin
  exec /usr/bin/screen -dmS Miner su -c /home/rcocchiararo/bitcoin/startcg.sh rcocchiararo
end script

then

Code:
#!/bin/bash
export AMDAPPSDKROOT=/opt/AMD-APP-SDK-v2.4-lnx32/
export AMDAPPSDKSAMPLESROOT=/opt/AMD-APP-SDK-v2.4-lnx32/
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${AMDAPPSDKROOT}lib/x86:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}

export DISPLAY=:0

I originally used your same paths, but after many failures, i ended up changing them (for experimenting, not because they were wrong, in fact, they are perfectly valid for my installation)

First of all, im not familiar with "script", but i noticed a "typescript" file apearing here and there (changing places as i changed paths).

The most i could get (by chance) was to get cgminer to start in screen, but in cpu mining mode Sad

that happened (by chance) automatically (i say by chance, because it was a one time thing, i don't know how i pulled it off, but if, and manually, by running:

Code:
/usr/bin/screen -dmS Miner su -c /home/rcocchiararo/bitcoin/startcg.sh rcocchiararo

exec from terminal just closes terminal.

If i run the last command i mentioned with my user (rcocchiararo) it starts cgminer in screen, with gpu mining.

If i do it with root (in a root terminal) i get cpu mining Sad

Oh, and i use command line arguments, because either on windows or linux, even after saving the config, it ignores me Sad (cgminer always asks for input)

Any pointers into having CGMINER startup automatically on linux ? i have a script in the "startup" folder in windows, but in linux, i found no way of having cgminer actually start either using a script in init.d or via startup applications (gui sesion automatically starts and logs in, i can run other miners via startup applications, but cgminer is my prefered one)
You need the computer to boot into X (login auto)
You need to run the script as the user who "auto login"s
You need the script to set DISPLAY correctly
... and you need to wait until X has started before starting cgminer.

im a failure :/

i originally had this on my script (double clicking it started cgminer correctly, or running it from terminal)

Code:
/home/rcocchiararo/bitcoin/cgminer-2.1.2/cgminer -o http://pit.deepbit.net:8332 -u user -p pass -o http://api2.bitcoin.cz:8332 -u user -p pass --auto-fan --auto-gpu --gpu-engine 950-975 --gpu-memclock 300 --gpu-fan 20-80 --temp-target 65 --temp-overheat 70 --api-listen --api-network -I 9

putting that in the "startup applications" did nothing.

So i changed it to this:
(the exports are what i had when i used other miners)

Code:
#!/bin/bash

export AMDAPPSDKROOT=/opt/AMD-APP-SDK-v2.4-lnx32/
export AMDAPPSDKSAMPLESROOT=/opt/AMD-APP-SDK-v2.4-lnx32/
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${AMDAPPSDKROOT}lib/x86:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}

export DISPLAY=:0.0

cd /home/rcocchiararo/Desktop
killall -9 cgminer
sleep 5
/home/rcocchiararo/bitcoin/cgminer-2.1.2/cgminer -o http://pit.deepbit.net:8332 -u user -p pass -o http://api2.bitcoin.cz:8332 -u user -p pass --auto-fan --auto-gpu --gpu-engine 950-975 --gpu-memclock 300 --gpu-fan 20-80 --temp-target 65 --temp-overheat 70 --api-listen --api-network -I 9

still nothing (o do think that the VGA fans start spining faster tho)
51  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER GPU bitforce overclock monitor fanspeed RPC in C linux/windows/osx 2.2.1 on: February 01, 2012, 11:24:48 AM
from 2.2.1
Code:
[2012-02-01 00:16:55] Thread 1 being disabled
There's your answer. In 2.2.1, dynamic mode was made "lighter" on the desktop by using only one thread per GPU so that it is virtually not felt by the user. If you are on a dedicated mining rig, you need to give it a static intensity with something like -I 9 instead of leaving it dynamic.

buuu

Even so, on windows, when setting intensity to 9, 2.1.2 is 5 to 10 mhash faster (on linux with this "disable" it was much more noticeable).

My linux machine is a home server, and its almost never used as a desktop, but from time to time i VNC into it, and if i leave it at a high intensity, its unusable Tongue

Sorry, I meant is it the same *.bin file you are running with each one.
When you start cgminer the first time it creates the *.bin file.
Every time after that it will use the *.bin file it created the first time (unless you delete it)
The fastest *.bin should perform at the same speed no matter which version of cgminer you are using (unless there is a problem with the cgminer version you are using)

Lastly:
cgminer -n
cgminer -V
will report info - what do they say?

I tried the binary created by each, on each one.

It seems like 2.1.1 or 2.1.2 create "the fastet binary".

But the difference is minimal.

Output from 2.1.2:
-n
Quote
1 GPU devices detected

Output from 2.1.1
-n
Quote
1 GPU devices detected

Output from 2.2.1
-n
Quote
1 GPU devices detected

About the other option, did you want -V or --verbose ?

i guess -V gives the version that was used for making the binary, because now im using the one from 2.1.2, and every cgminer reports 2.1.2 with -V (when i actually run them, i get the correct version printed onscreen).

I find it weird on linux that the binary is created where i phisically have whatever i use to run cgminer.

i have my scripts in /home/user/bitcoin, with my symlinks on my desktop, and the binary is made on my desktop.

(this is not the case for windows)

EDIT: just to clarify, i originally had 2.0.7, and i noticed the difference on mhash when i updated to 2.2.1, it wasnt until later that i compiled th other 2 versions
54  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER GPU bitforce overclock monitor fanspeed RPC in C linux/windows/osx 2.2.1 on: February 01, 2012, 01:45:55 AM
usual ... is it the same binary?
What does cgminer -n report for each ...
Edit: and cgminer -V
and are they pre-built or did you compile them?

i had to compile them, because i made the mistake of installing an x86 debian on my home server (before reinstalling it, i was able to use your binaries).

On windows i use your binaries, of course.

Also, on windows, the difference is less noticeable, but its there too.

I mine only with 5830 (i recently got a new rig with 2 5850, with ubuntu, but i havent touched it yet, the previous owner had phoenix running, and its still running.

ps: how can i run cgminer when the user logs in, automatically ? i tried putting the script i use, but nothing happens (it does work if i double click it, i have it in /home/user/bitcoin, with a symlink on the desktop, which is what i use)

i finally got the time to compile 2.1.1, 2.1.2 and 2.2.1 on my debian machine (sdk 2.4).

Just like in windows, 2.2.1 is slower than 2.0.7, 2.1.1 and 2.1.2.

My hd5830 running at 975/300 produces 300 to 315 MHASH with the older versions, but with 2.2.1, it produces 280 to 290 MHASH.

i see.

well, i failed to make it work.

My compilation of cgminer (whatever version) was failing because, somehow, my symlink to the SDK was broken.

I compiled 2.1.1, 2.1.2 and 2.2.1.

Still, anubis works, and this (which i like more) does not Sad

Ill continue withi this sometime in the future.

what puzzles me is:

Array
(
)
1

that at the end.

If im not mistaken, your code uses the same "stuff" to get this info "anubis" uses, right ?

can't think why it wont work.

ps: i'll go back to struggle with compiling cgminer on debian x86, i cant remember, for the life of me, how i did it the first time, now it always tells me no openCL found Tongue (even if i point it to where the sdk is).

it wasnt the firewall (when i first ran it with the api enabled it autoamically asked for firewall permission)

after disabling it, nothing changed (and anubis worked fine with it activated).

Any chance i did something wrong with your .php ? (or that the one from the first post is not working Tongue)

will have a look at that (i do have .bat and .sh scripts, so i double click them, or schedule them to run, its not like i do it by hand Tongue)

i downloaded what you linked on your first post.

I also tried "anubis", and it worked, but i preffer your simpler approach, with no db involved, but i can't get it to run Tongue

make sure your cgminer is set to accept rpc calls from the network:

the following should be part of your conf file for cgminer:

"api-listen" : true,
"api-network" : true,
"api-port" : "4028",

for some reason i was never able to save my config, so i ended up always running it with all the commands from commandline, but i do have:

--api-listen --api-network

port is optional, if i dont want to change it, right ?

ps: what is the older cgminer that has the api functions ? (i have the latest one on "Z", but the other pcs might have older ones, and "omega" has 2.0.7, which i believe does not support API functions).

ps2: will try disabling my win7 firewall on "Z" now

is the :

Code:
Array
(
)
1

at the end, ok ?

EDIT: didnt work Sad
