221  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How does everyone feel now that mtgox is back up? on: June 26, 2011, 11:56:50 PM
Confused. I'm new to all this and I have no idea who to trust to convert my hard earned £ into bitcoins
If all you want to do is convert and not trade regularly, you have pretty much nothing to fear. Transfer funds into Mt. Gox or TradeHill, purchase your bitcoins, and withdraw them to a bitcoin address. Problem solved.

Make sure it's a secure wallet that you put them in though, if it's more than you're willing to risk being stolen. And always run an anti-virus, of course.
222  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How does computer dunce safely store bitcoin? on: June 26, 2011, 09:56:26 PM
Backing up a wallet isn't the same as securing it, and could easily make it less secure. Undecided (I realize first result is about securing it, but all the same)
223  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best way to sell/buy bitcoins without fees? on: June 26, 2011, 09:36:36 AM
Everyone says be super careful with paypal...
That's because you shouldn't use it. Paypal doesn't like Bitcoin much and will freeze any accounts that it discovers were used to trade Bitcoin.

Note: Bitcoin users don't have their Paypals frozen, you have to actually bring Paypal into it and use it for buying or selling bitcoins to have your account frozen.

Edit: Oh, and of course there's the fact that they can just dispute the payment and steal your money back with you having no way of getting your bitcoin back.
224  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Addresses piling up on: June 26, 2011, 09:34:25 AM
i read something about 100 total and didnt understand it, is your wallet limited to 100 addresses ?

Not at all, you're thinking of key pools. Here's the thing. Your wallet file generates keys when you need them, but it can't reverse engineer them or figure out if they belonged to it without keeping a list, you see what I mean?

Normally, this would mean you would have to backup your wallet.dat file every single time a new key is generated.

To fix this obvious problem, Bitcoin clients have "key pools". Your client has already generated 100 keys for you, and every time you generate a new key it's just taking one from the list and generating another for that list. There is always a buffer of 100 keys, which means you only have to back up every 100 keys, instead of every key.
225  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Is Useless Because It's Too Easy Too Get Robbed on: June 25, 2011, 10:41:59 PM
This is the fundamental problem with the currency and why I am expecting a near-term price of between $7-$9.
why not <$1 then?

I said near-term.  The market is so infantile and speculative that it's going to remain above its fundamental price for quite some time.
Please excuse my ignorace, but how do you determine this 'fundamental' price?  got any formula to share?

Look into asset pricing models.

stop bullshitting.  you have no idea.

Since you don't want to do research: R = Rf + B(Rm - Rf)

go from there...

Could you please fill in the numbers so we can clearly see BTC price = $7-9
Thanks

No because this will give you the % expected return and then you use that in a discounted cash flow model to get the price.

That's a pretty poor excuse. Your original theory is flawed anyway, because there's no reason it should settle in any particular place. It could settle at 20, 10, 1000, we'd just use different amounts of bitcoin for our normal transactions. The decimal point can shift.
226  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin7 - Official letter, following first week of operation on: June 25, 2011, 08:00:19 PM
or said they wouldn't do business with bitcoin7 and did anyway
I haven't actually done any trading yet as Dwolla transfers, it would seem, are still prevented. You're right that I'm a hypocrite for even trying, though. Since everyone debating the same point as me seemed to have disappeared, and I was on little sleep with everyone calling me a troll, I figured I was missing something and just tried making peace as best I could. Was tired and stupid, shouldn't have cared or kept on feeding them.

Thanks for the support though, this is just what I'm talking about.
227  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Satoshi cannot hide himself if the gov really want to after him on: June 25, 2011, 04:34:52 PM
He could easily have a job, you know? The Bitcoin investment took nearly no time (not counting programming the thing itself) and now he can just make purchases with bitcoin. Easy.

Even if he wanted to turn it into fiat money, he could easily do it without getting caught. He's already used TOR and other anonymizing services for every communication he's made, so he wouldn't mess up the way you're assuming he would.
228  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: T-35 minutes. Will we be GOXed again? on: June 25, 2011, 03:37:15 PM
What a shock, Goxed again.

I've made something to commemorate the occasion.
229  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BitCams.com | Now excepting shares from investors. | MAY CONTAIN ADULT CONTENT on: June 25, 2011, 02:07:25 PM
I am serious about a full site editor. We want our content to be quality. I am no pro at the English language, yet I try to get better at it every day. Half the time when I misspell or make obvious mistakes, it's cause I'm running on about 4 hours of sleep total. I work very, very hard and half the time I can't even review my own posts. This forum in itself is so time consuming, and I am hoping to get this project under way by Monday or Tuesday so I can spend alot less time on here wasting time...  Once the site is done, I think we will be hiring an editor to go in and improve our content. Your on my list. (And yes I will pay you or anyone I choose to do this editing task. )

Sounds good, messaging you.
230  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BitCams.com | Now excepting shares from investors. | MAY CONTAIN ADULT CONTENT on: June 25, 2011, 01:47:15 PM
Aw man, see what I'm talking about? This post got way too long. Tongue

C'mon now, let's keep things to the topic and not be stupid about accidentally spelling errors on forums.  We are all human, the fact that you bring this up at all makes one question your motives in this thread now too. Either way, again, errors happen all over for everyone.
Point granted, I am regularly amused by your quality posts by the way. Smiley I was just put off by his own slightly trollish behavior.

Given that the thread is so long I skimmed a lot of it, if I had noticed her misspelling I no doubt would have pointed it out as well. Not that this is a decent behavior that adds to the community, I'm just saying, equal treatment and all.

Watching all the people who would typically call someone like her a troll, flying to her defense is so amusing. This is why she has so much control, because of weak-minded males who need to be told what to do 24/7 & bend over to a few fancy words.
There is no way to prove otherwise, so all I can really do here is say that that honestly had absolutely nothing to do with it. I'm just a fellow long-winded talker who often corrects things that I feel need to be corrected because of simple compulsion, and understood why she was doing what she was doing. You have no reason to believe this, but it doesn't really matter anyway.

Edit: On the subject of her supposed attractiveness, that avatar looks like an advertising image or some licensed image, not an actual picture of her. That's the vibe I got from the instant I looked at the avatar, so I know there was no subconscious bias. (Again, not that you have any reason to believe me, just thought I'd point it out.)

Thanks for all the great spelling observations sir. You are exactly what we need on the team, an editor! Are you here to fill out for the position, or just here to simply troll sir?  Smiley
Well, I'm definitely not here to troll and it would be appreciated if you would stop calling everyone who disagrees with you a troll. Yes, I was being mocking, and that was unnecessary, but hey, I'm a human.

However, I do have very good grammar and general handle on the English language and assuming you're willing to put aside the brief personal differences and are actually serious about this, I'd be interested in filling the position. I'm obviously pedantic to a degree and have noticed typos in all sorts of websites that should know better. (I don't think perfect spelling is intrinsic in any way, I'm not stupid, but it's an arbitrary standard that when not followed implies an unprofessional business.)
231  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: 0400hrs GMT - Odd Time To Start Trading @ MT Gox on: June 25, 2011, 01:24:38 PM
isn't Satoshi Japanese as well?  Cheesy
This is actually unlikely, it is more probable that he is European due to a very good knowledge of the English language, the usage of British English spellings, and a couple other things I can't recall at the moment but a Google would probably get you there.
232  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: BitCams.com | Now excepting shares from investors. | MAY CONTAIN ADULT CONTENT on: June 25, 2011, 12:59:40 PM
Some people just naturally write long posts like that. I've tried to keep my posts somewhat shorter on here but if you checked my post history you'd see a couple posts that go on longer than the typical post.

It usually goes like "Oh, hey, someone's misguided on the internet, I'll write a short but detailed post to helpfully show something", and then as you write it, you realize there's so much detail that you don't want to leave out, and about 30 minutes later you've got a nice long post on your hands detailing much more than you intended.

Does she need a motive? She's human, is she not? Just a bit more literate and completion-oriented than you, it seems. Hell, even this relatively short post is going on much longer than I thought it would.

She gave you good advice. You ignored it, questioned her motives, and went on with this silliness.

So basically, you are too amateur to properly run this. I also like how you spelled "grammar" "grammer" in the original post. Nice.

Edit: And "excepting" instead of "accepting". Apparently you will accept shares from anyone, aside from shares from investors, which you are excepting.
233  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin stabilizing around $15. on: June 25, 2011, 11:52:24 AM
I'm guessing a lot of people have money or BTC stuck at Mt. Gox now.  Once people who were actually trading get back going, we'll see where the market takes it.  $15 is just a sign of no volume.

Less volume typically means more fluctuation, doesn't it? Because individual trades have more of an effect.

Only if there are large trades.  It seems that TH limits the bid/asks to 100 limit.
200, actually, but yeah, that makes sense. Thanks. Smiley
234  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Futures Bet: Mt. Gox's first full hour of trading on: June 25, 2011, 09:48:41 AM
I would hope everyone loses their trust in Gox, takes all of their funds out and goes to TradeHill. However, it appears Gox is excellent at customer loyalty.
Not that I don't agree in reality, but theoretically, we don't know that TradeHill doesn't have the same problems. Gox has been tested and could easily have much better security than TH after the fiasco and their work to fix it.
235  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you think that the verb 'goxed' will enter the general vernacular now? on: June 25, 2011, 08:50:24 AM
Secondary meaning: being hacked as a result of using a single weak password on every site.

1: Fucking Sony leaked all my fucking data to fucking hackers which stole my identity ! The hackers used my PayPal account to trade drugs and now I'm looking at 1 to 3 without parole ! Fucking cunts !
2: Goxed in the ass, lmao

This. This should be the primary meaning.
QFT.
236  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin7 - Official letter, following first week of operation on: June 25, 2011, 03:28:29 AM
I personally value private conversations a lot and am far more upset about the fact that some people here seem to have used direct quotes from or even posted full PMs in public than what was written in this text.

That's very true, you're right. These weren't as personal or private as others, but privacy is still expected.

Like said, it was probably a poor judgement case, and this doesn't affect my trust in the company too severely as I've now begun some trading on there, albeit cautious as I would be with any new service.

I'm not trying to be too obnoxious about this (which is why I stopped feeding the troll), so I won't mention it much more.

Bitcoin7, a statement would be appreciated since as far as I know the company has been silent so far. I'm sure there's a good explanation, we'd just like to hear it from the company itself. That's all.

About the thing of offering money for a recommendation:
Srsly, get over it guys! They are not native english, and were probably in a hurry too, so it might have likely come across far more offensive/direct than intended.

Finally a useful european Bitcoin Exchange! Smiley
If they are really secure and trustworthy, only time will tell - but for the beginning, I'm happy.
No, you're absolutely right. I'm not denying that businesses do this kind of stuff all the time, and while it may seem illegitimate to me it doesn't mean the entire thing is a scam.

What I and others are saying is that we would like at least some mention, instead of them pretending that those messages they sent do not exist. This is making situations worse.

I actually created a Bitcoin7 account and got all the way to the steps of depositing money before I thought "Ehhh, actually I'm gonna wait until they get around to issuing a statement or some kind of acknowledgement for those weird messages they sent." so I'm not trying to just bash them endlessly.

I would like as many options in the Bitcoin world as possible so I'd love for them to be legit, but I'm not going to trust them in this situation. It's made worse that they've been so open and apologetic about everything else but haven't mentioned this at all.

Does this really have to be a discussion? They did something shady, users would like an answer. If other users do not feel an answer is needed, they don't have to ask, but it's not doing you any harm if we're trying to get B7 to own up. Tongue
239  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin7 - Official letter, following first week of operation on: June 24, 2011, 11:55:10 PM
Well aren't you super sleuth.....
finns gonna finn

Anyway, back to point.

I was considering taking a leap of faith and trading in small amounts with you anyway, Bitcoin7, due to some of your features.

There isn't going to be much chance of this happening with me or other users who have heard of the bribing until we get an official statement. An apology would boost your userbase.
240  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why do I have to download all blocks before receiving bitcoins on: June 24, 2011, 11:13:35 PM
It's pretty dumb that bitcoins has this ever expanding file that is necessary and contains details from day 1. But that's just the way it is.

The file isn't that big so far. When it does get bigger, there are potential solutions.

The block chain could be archived and distributed around the internet, then hashed and continued from there with nothing but the hash needed to confirm the new block chain's legitimacy.
