21  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: mtgoxx.tk phishing scam - Hold on to your Bitcoins! on: August 31, 2011, 03:13:36 AM
If Yubikey works anything like RSA SecureID does, then no, they couldn't break in without the key itself.  (At least not unless the whole Yubikey infrastructure had been compromised, which as best anyone knows, it has not.)

<security rant>

HOWEVER....  You should *never* click a link in any email sent by any business to access their web site.   Unless you're technically sophisticated enough to check the source of an email (most people who don't run their own mail servers are not), you won't always be able to tell a phish from the real thing.  Instead, go to their home page from the URL you saved in your bookmarks, or type the web site URL into your browser's address box.

You should also not discuss your financial information with somebody who calls you on the phone, even if that person claims to be from a bank, financial institution, or business you use unless you know the caller personally and can recognize their voice on the phone.  Instead, get their name, hang up, call 411 or look up the main phone number to that bank, call it, and ask for them.  When you call them, you know you're talking with somebody at the business and not some scammer who stole a database and got your private information. :/

I also got what I *think* was a legitimate warning about phishes from Mt. Gox.  Unfortunately I was sent from an IP that I couldn't connect via SPF, DKIM or rDNS to mtgox.com (the legitimate Mt. Gox domain).  If this was sent by Mt. Gox, they need to set up their outgoing email properly.  If not, then people need to be aware that some phishes do appear to be warnings about phishing sent by your bank or financial institution.  I didn't check this email carefully for a phish URL.

23  Economy / Goods / Re: Greenlandic tupilaks (and other traditional arctic crafts and knives) on: August 31, 2011, 01:36:44 AM
You have some lovely stuff on offer!  How did you come into contact with the artists?  Are you from Greenland yourself?

I'm in the United States, and collect art.  I might be interested in both small/inexpensive pieces of work that I can give as gifts for birthdays and Christmas, and also larger/more elaborate work for my own collection.  I'd prefer to avoid items made from material from polar bears or other endangered species; it's one thing for the Inuit to hunt them or defend themselves from attack, and a completely different matter for somebody to buy items made of that stuff and thereby bump up collector demand for it.  However, any material from reindeer, fox, and other non-endangered species (land animals mostly) would be fine.  I'd also prefer to avoid items intended to curse enemies, just so that I can honestly tell recipients what their gift is for and not freak them out. (Some relatives are prone to be superstitious or might have religious objections.)  But charms and other items whose original intent was not to hurt people would be fine.

You can PM me or get my email address from my web site, which is listed on my profile.
24  Economy / Goods / Bitbrew Order arrived! :-) on: August 31, 2011, 01:21:14 AM
And I have just taste-tested Edd's Ethiopian Harrar.  Harrar is one of my favorite varietals.  Once upon a time I had an incomparable cup of Harrar made by an Ethiopian chef who had just opened his own restaurant where I was living.  None of the Harrar I've found since has *quite* stood up to that memory (perhaps because the breakfast he cooked me with it was wonderful) Wink, but a couple have come close.  This comes *very* close -- a lovely, medium-dark roast fresh cup of rich, low-acid coffee that nonetheless had a slight *zing* to it.  I can't quite manage all those comparisons to oak, chocolate, fruit and flowers that coffee connoisseurs have adopted from the wine world, but take it from me that this coffee is excellent.

And so was the price.  I see that prices have gone up a bit since I ordered two weeks ago, but only enough to compensate for a somewhat weakened bitcoin.  I will hope that they come down again when the market gets stronger -- meanwhile, I will be ordering from Edd again.

Tomorrow morning I'll be trying the Sumatra, after which I'll post another review.
25  Other / Off-topic / Re: What kind of books does the community like? on: August 28, 2011, 06:25:02 PM
Are you opening a bookstore that takes bitcoin, by chance?  If you do, I'll be there so fast the virtual door will be off its hinges. Wink

Here's some of what I like/buy:

* Economics
* Espionage thrillers (fiction, like Le Carre)
* Fantasy (fiction, especially non-standard fantasy, *not* EFP) (EFP="extruded fantasy product", meaning bad Tolkien clones, etc.)
* History (non-fiction, especially U.S., Americas, Arabian countries, Russia, sub-Saharan East Africa, China)
* Magical Realism (fiction, Latin American, in Spanish is best)
* Mystery (fiction, like Conan Doyle, Dorothy Sayers, Elizabeth Peters, not so much hard-edged stuff)
* Political thrillers (fiction, like Ken Follett, Fletcher Knebel, or the early Tom Clancy)
* Political Science (non-fiction)
* Science (non-fiction, both technical and for the lay audience)
* Science Fiction (All kinds, esp. Russian SF in Russian)

This list is suggestions only, however.  I buy and read all sorts of books if they catch my eye.

26  Economy / Collectibles / Re: 1 gram .999 fine silver "bitcoin" rounds *********type 2*********** on: August 28, 2011, 05:40:45 PM
I'm one of those who bought some from the second batch, BTW.  I still don't think these make a good financial investment, but as stocking stuffers at Christmas it's hard to imagine anything more unique and likely to provoke discussion in my family and among my inlaws. Wink  I look forward to getting the 20 I ordered, will post pics when they arrive.

27  Economy / Collectibles / Re: 1 gram .999 fine silver "bitcoin" rounds *********type 2*********** on: August 27, 2011, 01:58:29 AM
Ditto, and ditto.  I decided that these little silver Bitcoins would make just *too* cool stocking stuffers for Christmas. ;-)
28  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MtGox not sending to dwolla? on: August 26, 2011, 06:10:46 PM
About a month ago I dealt with Mt. Gox once, to buy a few bitcoins.  (My first).  The process was a bit slow.  Since then I've used Camp BX without problems several times.  There's no such thing as a no-risk option, but Camp BX appears to have learned from the mistakes of many of its predecessors.

I also don't leave any significant amount of USD or bitcoins sitting anywhere but in my bank account or my own personal wallet. :-)
29  Economy / Services / Re: Need someone to make my CV look good... on: August 12, 2011, 04:41:19 AM
With any luck, you'll get the job and not need help with another resume. Wink  Let me know how it goes....
30  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: cmon lets help ourselves on: August 12, 2011, 04:20:11 AM
If your still looking for good smelling stuff, I've got plenty of coffee!

I'm definitely a coffee drinker.  Order incoming.  We'll see how you stack up against my favorite stuff from the Coffee Klatch in the Los Angeles area.  (They unfortunately do not accept Bitcoin -- yet, anyway.)
31  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: cmon lets help ourselves on: August 12, 2011, 02:01:00 AM
BTW, I did buy those t-shirts from Bitcoin World Market.  They arrived today -- well, yesterday, but I picked them up today -- which is about when promised from the order information.  The size is equivalent to the same size elsewhere.  The t-shirt fabric is more elastic than standard t-shirts, springy and a bit clingy.  The fabric is quite soft.  Best, when I washed and dried them (as I just did), they didn't run, fade, or shrink noticeably.  These t-shirts are made of a bamboo-based cellulose fiber, hemp fiber, and cotton fiber, and are highly absorbent.  It isn't terribly hot here today, but if it were, these would be the t-shirts that I would want to wear for comfort.

In short, Bitcoin World Market seems to deliver orders in a timely manner, and to ship what they promise.  I'll doubtless buy more stuff there. :-)
32  Economy / Goods / Re: Hand Tooled Leather Bitcoin Wallet(s) ~ Physical Wallet(s) on: August 10, 2011, 08:38:25 PM
I hadn't really thought that out....  Maybe a bitcoin symbol on a coin-like object on the flap, smallish but recognisable, with a border around the case itself -- something leafy and organic?  (Maybe a grape vine with grapes?)  I'd have to play with sketches for a bit.  Or you could run it past your brother and see if he has ideas. :-)

Trust me when I say that he'll put flames all over the wallet if given free reign. He's been called the Salvador Dali of leather. He could have flames shooting out of grapes and you'll still want to grab one and eat it. He can easily combine the Molly Hatchet and Meatloaf LP covers into one piece of artwork--leather or otherwise. If you can draw a picture using only words where he can capture it in his mind's eye, he'll be able to recreate it as art.

But if you truly want something sweet and leafy: http://www.flickr.com/photos/66151463@N04/6026480513/in/photostream/lightbox/

ROFL!  Good point.  It doesn't have to be sweet, but I'm not a cyberpunk type either.  Let me think about the design a bit, and I'll upload a sketch.

I just took a look at the site.  You've got some electronic gear that I think I might want, but the information on it does not provide the manufacturer name and other information that would let me research the item first.  Could you add that, especially for stuff like the microscopes? :-)  I've wanted one of those for some time, but first I need to compare models and features.   Thanks!
35  Economy / Goods / Re: Hand Tooled Leather Bitcoin Wallet(s) ~ Physical Wallet(s) on: August 10, 2011, 07:02:46 PM
Would your brother be interested in doing a Bitcoin laptop or IPad case? :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)
36  Economy / Goods / Re: Hand Tooled Leather Bitcoin Wallet(s) ~ Physical Wallet(s) on: August 10, 2011, 03:11:31 AM
He doesn't get out riding much ever since he married my sister and opened up his studio. He spends every waking hour in their mostly tooling leather seats and working on other art projects. I think I effed him up, though, with the wallet project and now this https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=36017.msg444132#msg444132 although we'll farm out some of the work on that custom bike project. He's working on the first wallet as we speak (well, at least as I type). I asked to see it and said no, closing the door on my ass. You may think that some here on this board may be a pain but, what ever you do, don't piss off an artist. They're also in their own little world.

(snip)

Writers are exactly the same way.  And I are one of those. ;P

Let me know when the wallets are available, via PM or email.  (Email address is visible on my account; I'll change it if spammers get it.)

37  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / BETTER SUBJECTS PLEASE (was Re: comments please!) on: August 10, 2011, 12:53:04 AM

Please don't post things with Subjects of "comments please!" and *NO* indication of what it's about.  Most of us don't read everything on the boards.  Subjects of this type appear to be come-ons that are trying to get us to read something that we would not otherwise read.

Instead, use an informative Subject and summarize what it is you want comments on, as well as providing a URL.

Thanks!

Is your brother-in-law a biker by chance?  He'd do very well in Reno, Nevada (where I live) the next couple of weekends, at Hot August Nights (lots of bikers) and then at Renovation, the World Science Fiction and Fantasy convention.  I'm not a biker, but I am an SF fan, and that sort of work would sell.
39  Economy / Goods / Re: Hand Tooled Leather Bitcoin Wallet(s) ~ Physical Wallet(s) on: August 09, 2011, 08:11:17 PM
Seriously.  I collect art.  I *like* beautiful, one-of-a-kind stuff.  I prefer quality craftsmanship. And I've been needing a new wallet; the old one is worn out.  Inexpensive is one thing; "El Cheapo" has a very different meaning at least in my ear.  If your wallet is good and reasonably priced, I'm interested.

What genre of art mostly tickles your fancy? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierarchy_of_genres

I've never categorized what I collect in the categories of the French Academy before; I just pick things up at art shows, galleries, wherever I see and like something that I can afford.  (I'm not rich; I usually buy from young or middle-aged artists who sell their own work in their own galleries or at craft shows.)  Looking at what I have, though, much is what the Academy calls "history" (quite a bit of allegory and myth) or portraiture, although not traditional portraiture.  Some is in the other genres, but not as much.  Not everything I get is representational, though, so much of it doesn't fit into those categories.  For example, I also buy hand-blown glass and textiles, such as tapestries and rugs.  The patterns on hand-blown glass are abstract or decorative by definition.  The tapestries and rugs can contain a recognizable picture, but most do not.

Fine leatherworking isn't a particular obsession of mine, but I've owned a few finely made, one-of-a-kind purses, some wallets, and a pair of boots.  They can be just as beautiful as any of the other stuff. :-)
40  Economy / Goods / Re: Hand Tooled Leather Bitcoin Wallet(s) ~ Physical Wallet(s) on: August 09, 2011, 05:04:32 AM
If the price is in line with other leather wallets, I'd get one.

Thank you for your interest, ErgoOne.

The price will definitely NOT be in line with thrown together, machine made leather wallets. Although the price point will be the determining factor in how many will be sold, the cost of quality leather and superb craftsmanship will be the determining factor on pricing for a custom old school, hand tooled leather wallet in this day and age of mass produced, technology-generated junk.

(snip)

Hmmmm....  Now I'm even more interested! Wink

Because it won't be el cheapo or because of the art work?

Yes.
