281  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in tv show -The Good Wife - Episode 3.13 - Finding Mr. Bitcoin on: January 14, 2012, 06:57:04 PM
I actually watch this series regularly.  Personally I'm looking forward to the episode, but I think the hype is ridiculous and I don't think it will have any real impact on Bitcoin growth aside from speculators with high hopes.  Publicity is good, but nobody is going to see this episode and go "ZOMG what is that bitcoin thing, it's real, wow!  Let's dump lots of money into it without having a clue about what it actually is!"

It usually takes a few hours to sufficiently explain bitcoin in enough depth to tech/econ savvy people, and even then most exhibit a healthy skepticism before bothering to look into it any further.  Expecting some kind of massive boost from an inaccurate fictional portrayal in a TV drama is silly.  I think the segment that appeared on Fox News "Freedom Watch" with Napolitano was much more important.  They actually explained what it was to an audience of folks that would have genuine interest in it.

All that said, greed doesn't necessarily follow logic, so I could easily be wrong.  Place your bets.  Smiley

284  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [409 GH] ABCPool.co 0% fee PPS - join now & get the best payouts out there! on: December 29, 2011, 11:50:39 PM
I was going to suggest 3% as well, but what if you did it in a tiered fashion?  If you set it up right, you should be able to find an incentive structure that potentially generates more revenue for the pool than just doing a fixed rate.

Example:

1% - minimum for everyone, inability to even see your worker hash rate
2% - minimum to be able to see your average hash rate
3% - minimum to be able to see any graphs/charts
4% - payouts more than once a day?  pay for invalids too?
5% - merged mining only at this donation level?  etc.

Set it so changes don't take effect until the current block is solved, so people can't toggle back and forth to "cheat"

I think most miners would do %2 as a minimum in order to see their hash rate, otherwise they'd have to rely on other ways to keep tabs on all the miners.

Just my 2c, I'll probably keep this pool in my rotation anyway given the awesome reliability.  Thanks!!

Ask for them back and wait to (hopefully) rub it in their faces in a few years. Wink
286  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What about bitcoin containers? on: December 29, 2011, 02:35:42 PM
This is why a lot of people are suggesting a "sweep" function in the client for private keys (and hopefully mini-pks).

Then you could write it on a paper leave it under the door mat.  They find it, sweep it into their client/wallet and throw the paper away.  You can do this now with 3rd party tools but if you don't know what you are doing it can be risky.
287  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [204 GH/s] yourbtc.net closing it's doors on 2011-12-08 on: December 28, 2011, 07:21:25 PM
Any word on releasing the source?  I'm still hoping someone will take over and continue development as this was really a fantastic pool.
288  Economy / Services / Re: 13.5 GH/s contract on: December 28, 2011, 02:21:40 PM
This contract would be much more attractive if you were mining somewhere more profitable.  If you are doing PPS at deepbit, more than 1GH/s of your mining power is going to fees.

+1 on more details -

What size are the fittings?
How much are you asking per card/lot?
OEM HSF available?  Or do you have any of the HSF for sale separately?
290  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Con on: December 27, 2011, 12:31:17 AM
I gave away a bunch of Casascius bitcoins and continue to do so.  I think they are one of the best ways to get people interested, especially once I walk them through looking up the balance in blockexplorer and emphasize that the coin they now posses is the only key to that balance.

One of my friends is a very bright engineer, but super skeptical and very condemning of what he perceives bitcoin to be.  I gave him a 25BTC coin for Christmas and now he's annoyed at me because he had to admit it was pretty cool.  He probably wouldn't have given me the chance to walk him through anything had I not given it to him, but when you give someone a coin you are creating a personal interest in bitcoin for them.

How did they miss Dragon's Tale?!  It's an MMORPG casino with a bunch of unique games.  They obviously put a ton of work into it and it shows, really quite impressive.

295  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Sweep/import private key feature request on: December 15, 2011, 09:43:19 PM
Then I suggest thinking about ways to making the functionality a one-time sweep - i.e. Enter "code" to redeem/transfer stored coins to your wallet.  It shouldn't be suggested that the bitcoin address from a physical token should be reused for any reason.  The balance could just be reported by the sweep function, i.e. "You have redeemed 10 BTC that have been sent to your wallet", just like an Amazon gift code is credited to your account.  There is no need to keep the private key in the users wallet file at all - make a second wallet temporarily, rescan, submit the transaction to transfer it to an address in the users wallet and throw the temp one away. This is the manual process I have used in the past, I'm sure it could be simplified in the client.
296  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Sweep/import private key feature request on: December 15, 2011, 06:57:51 PM
I'd send an Amazon gift code in email, how is that any different?

What about the security of users who have to futz around with swapping wallets and or scripts to move around bitcoin?  It's very tempting to just use a third party tool which lets you import private keys into an online wallet, but telling new users to trust a 3rd party is even worse given the history of mybitcoin, etc.

I think sharing a private key, be it a pass-phrase to be hashed, or a more securely generated key, is the easiest way to send bitcoin anywhere without worrying about any of the security issues present in cyberspace.  Sure, someone may eavesdrop, but the functionality benefits far outweigh the *potential* security risks.  Importing private keys manually (via sweep at the least) should definitely be an option in the client.

If anonymity is important, the ability to easily transfer and later redeem coins OUTSIDE of the blockchain (via privkey xfer) is just as important as transferring them within the network.

298  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Happy Satoshi Nakamoto Day on: December 12, 2011, 07:39:42 PM
An ode to Satoshi Nakamoto

In the year of the bailouts, 2008,
the bankers were printing more debt for the state
the dollar grew weaker, the big picture clear
as they fed the hangover more Keynesian beer

World leaders debated, directing the blame
but with no real solutions, just more of the same
regulation, mark-to-market, housing costs for the poor
the fixes don't work, but they still give us more more

Who's to blame, is this caused by desire for wealth?
when perhaps the real problem is money itself!
the idea isn't new, maybe everything's tanking
'cause society is built on fractional reserve banking

And so called "investment" and attempted control
may soon spiral fiat into a death roll
as elected officials looked dumber and dumber
others started to put their faith into numbers...

On one cold winter day, a crypto-genius arrived
with some rock solid code, picked up by the hive
audited and improved, then released to the wild
Bitcoin had been born, Satoshi's brain-child

One day bankers and fascists may look back with scorn
on the day when the genesis block was born
like a clock set in motion, with springs that are wound
by the hackers who joined, mining blocks to be found

Securing the payments of those who believe
that middle-men shouldn't be there to receive
more than a small fee to perform a transaction
with privacy options when taking the action

This idea is a fantastic and easy to spread
through incentives devised in the crypto-man's head
the ball started rolling, but Satoshi grew quiet
soon thereafter began the first speculative riot

Had he lost faith, become scared, or retired?
maybe he was a banker himself but got fired?
AI from the future or a corporate plot?
or was "he" a "them", or had he been shot?

The answers to these, may never be known
so we'll make it a feast, so that you can be shown
how thankful we are for what you have built
as we sew our transactions on this open-source quilt

And we hope that you're lurking, with smile and a glow
as your world-changing software continues to grow
if you need some advice on this day, what to do?
please dump some some of your coins, I have bids in at $2

The easiest safe way I've found so far is through the http://bitaddress.org script.  You can save a local copy and run it to generate the private keys on a disconnected PC + whatever other security measures you deem necessary.
