1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: September is already here on: August 25, 2022, 08:44:36 PM
Does anybody plan to speculatively mine GPU coins after PoS, even if the 'paper profit' is a few pennies per day per card? If revenue < power cost, I obviously will turn my rigs off.

The alternative to mining is to sell the cards then buy coins. That doesn't seem like a bad deal since video card prices are still above MSRP, but coin prices seem to be low. I doubt my cards would be able to produce the same amount of coin in the next 24 months compared to just selling them now.
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Ravencoin - is there a future in this? on: July 30, 2022, 05:42:25 PM
Oh I am quite happy with it at this point. I hope as BTC goes up Raven will follow and like you said sell all at 25cent and cash out - if it reaches that high next time Smiley
My moto has always been hold as much coins as you can but sell coins you need to cover your monthly expenses.
You could also trade your RVN for a basket of coins in order to diversify. But you are in an enviable position even at 3.8 cent RVN. Most miners years ago sold 99% of their coins instead of HODLing them and making millions. I personally missed out on hundreds of thousands of DOGE, DASH, ETH and LTC because I never saved up enough of the coins. From now on I'll never repeat that mistake again and I'll keep mining during the bear market.
3  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: S19 Power Requirements on: July 21, 2022, 01:55:55 AM
Cool cool, with that much power I can somewhat assume this will be a three phase power coming in. Three phase generally comes in at 208 pole to pole and 120 pole to neutral (WYE). If you bring in 480v you can get a 230 volt transformer but will loose the 120v capability (DELTA).  Personally I would run the delta config tapped a little over 240 volts.
What you're saying is specific to the U.S. / North America. I have to worry about the 208 volt / 240 volt difference for sure and the delta/wye stuff. I also prefer 240v delta because higher voltage = more wattage available, plus less current through cables, so higher efficiency.

The rest of the world can actually have 230v or even just 220v, not to mention 50 Hz instead of 60 Hz. Japan actually has just 100 volts! Residential buildings in some European countries actually have three-phase service.
4  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Cost to Mine 1 BTC in every country on: July 20, 2022, 10:42:47 PM
I'm in Germany I have 40cents per kWh, I have an S19j it cost me this to mine a BTC but that doesn't make it a rule for the entire country.
Even miners within the same region or utility coverage area can have vastly different rates. Some of them can be on a fixed long-term contract for 3-4 cents while others pay public tariff rates of 5-6 cents. The GWh they signed to are already a sunk cost, so the marginal cost of their power is zero. Therefore, these big corp-o-mines will always continue mining even if BTC is $5k. Even if they went bankrupt, some private equity fund would gobble up the entire warehouse for pennies, but the ASICs would keep mining!
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: What is this video card? on: July 15, 2022, 03:35:41 PM
the last 15 months I grabbed 3 cards on ebay used all work well.
I have had more problems with new video cards than used ones. In total, I have purchased 150 used / 300 new GPUs over the past 6 years. The new ones had a DOA rate of 2-3% while the used were only DOA 1% of the time.
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: What is this video card? on: July 14, 2022, 09:51:07 PM
Thank you, but these products will not be delivered to my country at the moment. This is a good price for such a video card, because it will be relevant in games and mining for a very long time. Are there any risks when buying these video cards? I prefer to do tests before buying used video cards.
I don't think the RTX 3090 will be relevant for either games or mining for very long. That's why it's price has dropped like a stone. The RTX 3060 Ti will.

I have bought 100+ used video cards any only 1 or 2 had a problem that the seller refused to fix. I will not buy new video cards unless the premium is < 5% greater than used.
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: newest risers on: July 14, 2022, 08:07:36 PM
I do not build a mining farm with a consumption of 2-3 kilowatts. It is better to make 2 mining farms with a server power supply of 1200-1600 watts. Maybe it will be more expensive by $ 100, but it will be more reliable.
I have had no problems building mining rigs with two or even three power supplies. As long as the video cards are the exact same model and power sources are not mixed, the uptime has been close to 99%. I have had success with this method since 2017.

A cheap power supply is not suitable for video cards. It can be used to power the motherboard and hard drive.
The EVGA 500GD is more than reliable enough with enough power for a single RTX 3080 Ti as well as the system components. It has 4.4 stars on Newegg. Why not make use of that capacity?
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: What is this video card? on: July 14, 2022, 02:27:00 AM
I remember the suggested retail price for the RTX 3090 was around $1500.
https://www.nvidia.com/de-de/geforce/graphics-cards/30-series/rtx-3090-3090ti/
Where do you buy these video cards for $1,000?
FeeBay (no referral link)
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=RTX+3090&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_odkw=RTX+3060+Ti&_osacat=0&LH_BIN=1&_sop=15

The price of used RTX 3060 Ti's is <$400 for me now.
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: newest risers on: July 14, 2022, 02:17:00 AM
But why use 2 power supplies? Is there not enough power in the server power supply or is there no adapter to power the motherboard?
The 500-700w ATX unit is only good for 1-2 video cards, but the rig has 8-10 cards, so obviously more power is required. If I had a 10x RTX 3060 rig, it needs 2000w total. The ATX supply will cover 500w, so I need 1500w extra, which can be covered by two HP-DPS750RB supplies. Or I could have an 8-card rig and use a single HP-DPS1200FB supply. I like to have enough wattage to cover the full TDP of the cards.

With 8x RTX 3080 Ti video cards (2800w) a single DPS1200 won't be enough. I will need two of them, with the remaining 400w being covered by the ATX unit.

Why not a 1600w ATX supply or even a 1200w one? Because they are double the price-per-watt of the server units. An EVGA 1600 P2 will cost $220 which is 13.8 cents/W. But a HP DPS-1200FB+breakout board+12v cables costs just $70 --> 5.8 cents/W.
10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How bad can it get? on: July 13, 2022, 03:59:46 PM
Safer bet would be to invest in BTC after next big dip sub $10K
How is that not a gamble too? At least with video cards, the investment can only lose half of it's value.
11  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Cost to Mine 1 BTC in every country on: July 12, 2022, 05:24:32 PM
This is the only source of U.S. power cost which is somewhat reliable:
Why do I say it's somewhat reliable? Because the mining farm locations and power rates that I know of so far correlate with the green areas. This is from public mining farms as well as my personal experience.

https://findenergy.com/

The map displays average residential rate by county, which obviously doesn't include cheaper tariffs that may be available or tiered usage plans. But it's a good starting point to find industrial power. Simply divide the residential price by 2 to get a rough estimate. The exceptions to this rule I can find so far are upstate NY (divide by 3), Long Island (divide by 1.5), Northern NJ/JCPL (divide by 1.5), Central Washington (divide by 1), Delaware (divide by 1.5).

Of course, the recent natural gas price hike is not included, which you'll have to pay for eventually, so use with caution.
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: What is this video card? on: July 12, 2022, 04:16:31 PM
Gamers may complain but I think gamers should not complain, the 3090 24 GB is capable of running anything paired with a good processor. For the miners,we would be happy to see the soonest the 4000 series hitting the market which would cause another drop in price in the 2000 and 3000 series
The RTX 3080/3090 series prices would be hit the hardest by the new generation. They have been the cards that have held their value the worst so far, with the RTX 3090 being $3000 last year but now you can get them for only $1000. The RTX 3080 10GB was $2000+ but now just $650.

Some AMD models like the RX 5000 series will suffer greatly because they're not good at non-ETH coins and are heavily used by miners. Radeon in general is more exposed to the crypto market.
13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: newest risers on: July 10, 2022, 08:12:03 PM
And why use 500-700w ATX for the motherboard, if an inexpensive, good quality power supply of 300-400 watts is enough, and connect the rest of the video cards to the server power supply?
Or does your server PSU not have enough power?
Because it only costs $10-15 more to get a 600w ATX supply than a 400w unit. That is a price of 15-20 watts/$ which is excellent.
14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: RTX 2060 Super GPU BEST GPU for Mining? RTX 2060 Super Beat 1660 Super Mining? on: July 10, 2022, 01:36:31 AM
P106-100 6GB very old video cards, analogue of GTX 1060 for mining. I don't want to compare hashrate and power consumption
What's wrong with comparing hashrate/power usage between generations? Pascal only has 25% worse H/W compared to Turing on FLUX or XEQ. ETH is irrelevant because it will disappear one day.

If I can get a P106 6GB for $70 or a RTX 2060 super for $300 while I pay just 5.4¢/kWh effective for power, the choice is obvious. Even when accounting for the price of the system parts, the P106 has more profit per dollar.
15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: newest risers on: July 09, 2022, 08:09:03 PM
It has to be one motherboard that can put at least 2 power supplies, yeah I know that you can do a diy here but for maximum safety, is better done internally. A great motherboard is the asus b250 mining expert, you can put 3 psus and up to 13 gpus without issues.
I have had bad experiences with the B250 Mining Expert back in 2017/2018.

I like using a 500-700w ATX power supply for the MOBO + 1 or 2 video cards, then HP server power supplies for the remaining video cards. That is the cheapest combination while still having Gold/Platinum efficiency.
16  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2022 Diff thread. on: July 09, 2022, 05:29:43 PM
25c at 4PM sounds about perfect given we are in the middle of July, just by chance, it's almost 4AM now, and it's exactly 25c, 12 hours from now, i would expect at least an extra 10 degrees.
Temperatures were as high as 41°C for Riot Whinstone this week. Lol, I have no idea how they can keep operating even with their evaporative water wall. They probably shut down during peak heat anyway because electricity prices tend to be very expensive (>30¢/kWh)
17  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Cryptomining - Independence Day 2022 statistics on: July 09, 2022, 04:33:28 PM
Most of the U.S. hashrate is based in just 3 states: WA, TX, NY. However, I expect that to change. New mining farms will be built in Midwest or Southeast states with cheap power. ERCOT power in particular has become much more expensive. So now second-tier energy markets are becoming more attractive. I moved to NC after I figured out I can get residential power for 7.4¢ (industrial is 6-6.5¢). That means it costs me ~$15k to mine a BTC with ASICs or ~$7k with GPUs (more risky).
18  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: RTX 2060 Super GPU BEST GPU for Mining? RTX 2060 Super Beat 1660 Super Mining? on: July 09, 2022, 12:38:25 AM
Who is thinking about buying new or used video cards, then check out this thread. Settings, overclocking, consumption, hashrate. The price of this video cards is very attractive and 8 GB of memory on board.
https://miningclub.info/threads/vse-rtx-2060-super-v-majninge.68827/
The RTX 2060 super is definitely good at non-ETH algorithms, but I can find the P106-100 6GB cards for much cheaper per hash.

For $50 you can buy a motherboard for 8 video cards, a processor and a cooling system for the processor, and your device costs $30. Goods from China can take 45 days, but if you order in advance, then this is a good and proven motherboard.
Did you use this motherboard yourself?

It looks like a good deal at US$60 including shipping, but I found one that supports 12 GPU's for $90. However, it doesn't include a CPU, which will cost $30.

So I have to choose between $60 for 8 GPUs (30 day wait) or $120 for 12 GPUs (5 day wait).

I'm leaning toward the 8GPU MOBO because less cards probably means more stability.
20  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Looking for leads on cheap power on: July 07, 2022, 08:59:27 PM
You're better off finding an existing mining farm who's going bankrupt and taking over the facility from them or buying them out. Sub 5-cent industrial power is hard to find these days after what happened to the natural gas market. Existing warehouses with 1MW of capacity installed are very hard to find for a reasonable rent.

The best location I ever found was a former pork processing plant in Northern NJ with 1.25 MW of power at 6.5¢/kWh. The rent was $4000/month.
