The Dash rebranding is by comparison absolutely brilliant.

You mean brilliantly criminous?? Like secretly buying an unrelated genuine cryptonote project and shutting it down only to steal the name? I ignored darkcoin before, now I just hate it.

What is "criminous" about buying name rights (not stealing)? The foundation legally obtained the name rights, which is the opposite of the definition of a criminal. It was also not done in secret. The community was allowed to debate, it was clear that the previously floated name of Dash was the preferred name by the community, and the foundation did what I think most anyone would agree was the prudent thing and secured said name rights. The alternative was letting the community debate ad nauseum a decision it had clearly already formed a consensus around. Would you rather have a foundation that acted, or one that attempts to make every single community member happy (impossible I might add)? I for one actually appreciate the fact that Evan and the Foundation do what they think is best based on the input of the community in a timely fashion. They are acting like the scrappy start up that we are, and are doing a great job.

The "unrelated cryptonote project" was made an offer and accepted it. No one forced anyone's hands.

Ghostplayer, I love you bro, but to be honest our constant aggressive reply to trolls, as a community, does not help. It is exactly what he wants and no matter what you say he will always come up with something else, that is his purpose here and he seems to enjoy it very much.

Every time we reply to a troll, no matter what our reply is, we give them the opportunity to post again. And when we say things like we are going to pet with trolls we sound juvenile.  And then we start a spiral where others that are definitely not trolls like wpalczynski, get involved and we end up insulting non-trolls and it all just gets ridiculous.

Please let him say whatever he wants, testnet is restarting with a bunch of updates we should be excited and discussing that. We should try to keep an intelligent discussion going and that is impossible to do if we keep replying to trolls.
Sorry, Minotaur... couldn't help myself. I'll keep my mouth shut going forward! Some days you just get fed up with some people, you know?

https://blockchain.info/charts/avg-confirmation-time

mintime: 5 min for one confirmation
maxtime: 11 min for one confirmation

Why are you even here? The only reasons I can think are 1) to FUD Darkcoin so that you can buy some for hopefully a fraction of a percentage cheaper, or 2) because you honestly think that this coin is some kind of fraud and you genuinely think you are protecting us, the uninformed innocent, from the evils of this coin (and have nothing better to do with your life). If the former, you are an idiot, because any "savings" you are getting must be miniscule compared to the effort you've been exerting. If the latter, well, at this point we have all heard what you've had to say and literally everyone here disagrees with you. Apparently, we cannot be "saved" from our misguided decision making. It has been made clear to you over and over again that your comments are not valuable or welcome here, yet you keep coming back. So I'd say scenario #2 you are an idiot as well.

Or, maybe you just enjoy annoying people? Who even has time to post all the crap you do? Go get a job or (another) hobby!

Great, one example of an exchange that will take your funds after one confirm. Do you really think that in any way discredits Evan or his point that bitcoin confirmations take a really damn long time? I have waited an hour for just three confirms, let alone six. Pointing to a chart of "average" confirmation times doesn't make it untrue that bitcoin can take an hour. Hell, there are Darkcoin blocks that due to simple randomness have taken 50 minutes in extreme cases. If anything, if this is your "body of evidence" that Evan is dishonest, you are only discrediting yourself.

Please, stop wasting everyone's time - including yours - clogging up this forum with gibberish.

Does anyone know the details about the reconverge technology? My MNs and client nodes are all at a few different block heights. I would normally reindex to get on the right fork, but I'm taking this as an opportunity to test it. How long should I wait to see if my nodes and MNs reconverge? Is it a certain number or frequency of blocks that it checks? Will my MNs require a "masternode start" when they figure out the right fork? They currently show in the masternode list, but I imagine when they switch to the correct fork, that may no longer be the case.

I would love a good explanation of what to expect, or if anyone knows that they reconverged. Are there any messages in the log file that could confirm it is working?

Thanks all! Looking forward to testing this out!

Just --reindex, there are some issues with reconverge. We're going to test it more on testnet to figure out a better implementation of the tech.
OK, doing that right now. Only two of my MNs ended up on the wrong chains. If you are testing this weekend, I can finally participate! Earnings season is behind me as of yesterday, so I'm not working weekends like I was.

I bought 3000 DRK at price 0.008 !
What am i do ? Sell them or hold them ? someone please give a prediction of the future of DRK Coin

Sell at 0.016 .

We should have a day where everyone goes into Cryptsy/Bitfinex/etc and doubles their sell orders price. Would that even work?  Grin It's a pretty interesting thought experiment.

That would only work if I actually had a sell order in to go into and double.  Wink

So the logo isn't going to be my genitalia then?  Thats me out of the renaming debate...

Serious question:  I read that the block reward is going to be reduced by 7% soon.  Can somebody give me a newbie explanation on what effects we might see as a result?

yes 7% annual decrease.
Hmmm logicaly less coins mined = price up... but there is no logic in crypto ® Wink

Thanks mate.  Logically there is less reward for miners and masternode owners but difficulty should adjust if network hashrate drops...but then again price goes up (in theory) so hopefully everything stays the same apart from the price Wink

Is the reduction happening on our first birthday?

https://github.com/darkcoin/darkcoin/blob/master/src/main.cpp#L1415

Based on blockheight, every 210240 blocks

Thank you kindly. Logical, I should have known that.

We are actually averaging about 566 blocks per day since launch, not quite the 574 for which the code aims. Based on that average, it will take 371 or 372 days, not 365 to hit block 210240. Therefore, we will likely hit that block on about Jan 25th or Jan 26th, not the one year anniversary of 1/19/2015.

unless I missed something - that's pretty much going after child porn - which I welcome them to take down - those bastards are scum

Agreed. Privacy is a right we are all entitled to and I believe in that wholeheartedly. Child pornography is one use case where ecash is actually a negative thing. We can't keep them from using it for illegal purposes, but I find it disturbing that anyone in our community were to get excited about Darkcoin's adoption for these purposes. I would rather see our currency fail altogether than get rich off the back of it getting used for child porn. Let's push for legal use cases aimed at privacy only. Not that there's any evidence yet that child porn sites are using DRK, but still, I don't even want the appearance of an association with it.

What now ?! The price is suspiciously low!
I have a suspicion about what is going on, and I don't think it's anything fundamental to the coin. Rather, I think it is due to a couple of events that should dissipate selling pressure in a few weeks.

1) We had around 1100 masternodes just weeks ago, and that generated an expected return for MN owners with which the market was happy
2) Many of the largest holders of DRK were sitting on the sidelines. I don't know why... either because managing hundreds of MNs was too "dangerous" to juggle many wallet.dat files around, or because the return relative to the amount of work they had to do to set up all those MNs wasn't worth it.
3) The team added the "-wallet=" command line instruction and start-many, both of which make the task of setting up many MNs much easier.
4) In parallel, the reward share increased to 30% last month
5) For the reasons in #3 and #4, we've seen large holders / wallets start to set up literally hundreds of MNs ---> this drives down the expected return of owning a MN, which in turn probably caused a portion of MN operators to decide to exit or a number of aspiring MN operators to decide not to pursue buying coins any longer to set one up.
6) The combination of some MN owners wanting to exit, and some potential buyer deciding not to buy both increases supply on the exchanges and decreases demand (which obviously negatively impacts pricing)

However, I think this is temporary. Once the large holders deploy their MNs, and rewards keep increasing up to 60% as the months go on, I think you'll see a return to more normal supply and demand. I view this as a buying opportunity. I love entering when the trend is toward the exits... I get better prices that way! Smiley

Well, considering the breakout of available 1000 coin blocks wouldn't allow for maxing out the masternodes coupled with the monthly increase in masternode payout percentages, I don't foresee returns being THAT low. Even so, 6.4% for sitting on your ass and effectively doing nothing in an already low rate environment aint too shabby. Granted, if you don't believe in DRK, you probably aren't going to be running a masternode for long periods of time anyway.

Don't forget that the 6.4% doesn't yet include any expenses, either. At $5/mo for hosting, you can shave off a couple more % (depending on what the price of one DRK is).
252  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] Darkcoin | First Anonymous Coin | Inventor of X11, DGW and Darksend | Instant TX on: December 09, 2014, 08:41:23 PM
Total Masternodes: 1358 = 1358 actives + 0 inactives (Last refresh: Tue Dec 09 2014 19:12:37)
Estimated daily payout for an active node (blocks with MN payments last 24h: 100%): 0.58 DRK/day (Last Refreshed: Tue Dec 09 2014 19:12:42)

OMG what is going on? Are the top 10 wallets moving funds to masternodes?

I follow various Darkcoin related statistics data for my fun and this is the ONLY one I do not like. (aside the price that I don't get why is still as low as $2.25 or something). I raised the question, of coins being locked in the Masternode, wondering (hypothetically) what would happen if ALL the coins are locked out? Many a member told me it is too early to worry about it, and that pure economics would not allow any problems with it but I wonder / worry about LIQUIDITY!

Again, hypothetically, if only us - Darkcoin supporters - would buy the coins and at the end have ALL of them locked in MN, the value of one DRK could be a one million dollars for all I care, but who would buy the coin for a million? No one, I guarantee you. So, I might sell that one coin for a $1.00 (one dollar) in order to find a greedy buyer outside the community. And voila!, all the coins just lost 99.999999% of their value.

I don't buy an argument that scarcity would increase the price for the price itself is NOT, could NOT and SHOULD not be the only consideration.

I am currently at 28% loss with my Darkcoin investment. But I've also made 350% - in the last 30 days - on shorting Russian ruble on FOREX. (I'm sorry, our Russian friends, I hate to see how the Financial Crime Cartel is destroying your economy, but I could not let free money go away)  So, if I cared ONLY about the price / profit, I'd convert all my coins into a more profitable investment (at least on the short run) and forget about freedom, privacy, anonymity, cheap remittance of currency that is currently at 12% for fiat garbage, according to the World Bank (a $540 Billion market) and all sort of incredible benefits e-Cash (Darkcoin) could provide to the people all over the world. But if this cash sits in my MN or in my wallet and does nothing else but provide me, and only me, with a coin or two "reward", and the Network with some security, damn... something indeed might be wrong.

Ponder this: as of today, 27.57% of ALL Darkcoins in circulation are already locked in Masternodes. On November 12th, less than a month ago, that percentage was 24.57% so the # of locked in coins outpaces the overall coins supply quite rapidly. [3% or for 40% on an annual basis] With the price as it is and the pace of MN growth we could see 50% off ALL coins being locked in Masternodes in less than six, perhaps four months.

This simply CAN'T be good! I defy anyone to explain me how the currency out the circulation is going to be beneficial for our future users?

Huh

Not to harp on this comment more than anyone already has, but I think something additional to bear in mind... Remember that we are constantly generating new coins from mining and at some point the benefit to owning a MN decreases as the number of MNs increases. The math works out like this...

November 12th... total coins in circulation = ~4,850,000 * (1 - 24.57%) = 3,658,355 in "free" circulation
Right now ......... total coins in circulation = 4,929,372 * (1 - 27.57%) = 3,570,344 in "free" circulation

That means that a measly 88k coins were removed (net of those created) from circulation (currently this is only 1.8% of all coins... hardly something to panic over). Add to that we should be reaching an equilibrium number of MN owners now that we have clear visibility that we will eventually be receiving 60% rewards at some distant point in the future. This means that going forward, this should lead to a net increase in the number of DRK in "free" circulation as new coins are generated by miners. If the number of MNs increased this very moment to 4,929 (effectively wiping out almost all coins in circulation), ROI at the current 30% payout ratio would be a paltry 6.4% per year. The price of a coin would also likely be astronomical. I don't know about you, but Darkcoin requires a lot more than a 6.4% ROI for the high level of risk category of investment. I for one would bail out my coins if the ROI ever dropped below 15% or so. Of course, by the time any of this would happen, even more coins will be in existence, making the ROI in any "all coins invested in MNs" situation even lower than that 6.4% figure, making your scenario even more improbable. This is a non-issue that corrects itself through the constant generation of coins.

You send enough so the ending result is 1000. Coin control would tell you if there is a fee (which on size there will be).
Weird. I sent exactly 1k, got no fee warning, and exactly 1k showed up in the new wallet.
The fee is dependent on the size of the transaction in kb, not on the basis of the number of coins you are sending. Therefore, one transaction for 1000 DRK might not cost anything, while a small transaction for 1 DRK that depends on lots of small inputs or "dust" could cost a lot. This is true with most other cryptocurrencies as well, including Bitcoin.

If there ever is a fee, you needn't worry about anticipating it and including it in the transaction. If there are any fees, the wallet will warn you ahead of time, and add the fee for you (e.g., rather than reducing your 1000 to become ---> 999.999 + 0.001 fee, it will change to 1000 + 0.001).

Also, make sure that Darksend is OFF or your 1000 DRK deposit could be broken up into anonymized funds. You should enable coin control as well and lock the 1000 DRK input to prevent ever accidentally breaking it up (which would instantly disable you masternode).

I don't know man, I can't shake the feeling we missed a Golden Opportunity today to stay one step ahead...

Yes indeed.

What worries me is that when XC, CLOAK, VERI and all that stuff came along, Evan didn't bat an eyelid.

Yet when SDC appears he suddenly wants to "merge" with them ?

Why would he even suggest just a drastic move only in this particular case ?

He must think they're onto something.

If ever there was an invitation to hedge your DRK investment you can't really beat an endorsement from its own developer. I've already acted accordingly.

It was more that he was impressed with their skills, not that they're "on to something" per se.  At least not in the way I think you mean it.  He was trying to find a way to consolidate talent to better compete & establish DRK's dominance in the market space.  It was a good idea in principle.  Those chat logs though, sheesh.

They know cryptography very well, which would have been the benefit to having them on the team. I think as DRK grows in popularity, we should start to have the ability to attract this type of talent on our own, using the resources from large holders to fund bounties, etc. And maybe someone more honest than those guys. The chat logs make it clear they are dirt bags.

It seems some of the Silk Road users are just putting their coins on an exchange, buying DRK to then anonymize, then buying back BTC.
Do they not think an exchange can be subpoenaed? The won't have to speculate and solve a blockchain, they can just say "give us the records or be shit down" and what do you think the exchange is going to do?

Can't fix stupid. There is no point in talking to these people. They think they already know everything. Let them learn the hard way.

OR at the least, why pay exchange fees twice when you can just buy the DRK and use it instead of.... Oh nevermind, why do I bother...

Frankly, adoption is premature... There will be complaining and trolling as development continues and new features upset the apple cart now and again...

Camosel, the process is actually longer than that... if you read the posts, the dealers are:

1) Acquiring Bitcoin
2) Sending the Bitcoin that they want "laundered" to an exchange
3) Exchanging Bitcoin for Darkcoin using an anonymous account that doesn't link to them
4) Sending the Darkcoin to a local DRK wallet for anonymization
5) Sending anonymized Darkcoin to a different exchange
6) Exchanging the Darkcoin for either Bitcoin or fiat that now cannot be traced.

In this way, the source of the funds is not clear to the second exchange and there is no way for them to link it back to the marketplace. And it costs them about 1% in exchange fees and transaction fees (vs. 2-3% for a tumbler service which is less secure anyway). So even if both exchanges were subpoenaed, law enforcement wouldn't be able to link the transactions. Pretty smart workaround if the exchange won't support DRK if you ask me. They still need to explain where they got all the money from if they are doing this in high volumes of course, but that's something they have to deal with on Bitcoin anyway. This just makes the anonymization easier and less costly.

What anonymous coin will succeed?  --still adding new coins, PM me details if you miss some coin here--

Darkcoin [DRK]   - 70 (30.2%)

Monero [XMR]   - 22 (9.5%)

Cloakcoin [CLOAK]   - 75 (32.3%)

XC [XC]   - 32 (13.8%)

We can easily get 70% of the vote, if people would just vote already  Roll Eyes
Thanks for sharing! After carefully considering the opinion of a bunch of bitcointalk fan boys and cryptocurrency geeks, this 5 vote differential has convinced me that Cloakcoin should win. I'm taking down my masternodes now and dumping my Darkcoin at fire sale prices. Cloakcoin to the moon!!! Hahaha!

Seriously, all that matters is the general public's user experience. Let Cloakcoin attempt to educate the public on what PoSA is (as if the public cares or has the faintest hope of understanding it within their 30 second attention span), while we simply say "Darkcoin is the anonymous version of Bitcoin that is open source and has been reviewed by leading security experts... Oh, and check out our slick new wallet". Pretty confident that the opinion poll won't matter much. But if it makes you feel better, I voted anyway! Support your community!

Looks like the DRK/USD trading pair over at Bitfinex is becoming more popular over time. There is some real volume happening there (it's now the #3 DRK exchange). So if one wants to buy or sell vs. fiat, Darkcoin is now the only anonymity coin that legitimately can claim to offer that to the market. I checked all the other anonymity-focused coins and none of them has even miniscule USD markets. Not to mention that the CNY pairing has come a long way as well. All told, 11% of trades are now in fiat.

There is an idiots guide to updating to 0.10.11.6 over at darkcointalk entitled "Masternode guide for complete noobs to update to 0.10.11.6". All you'd need to do is change where the wget instruction points for any other versions.
