461  Economy / Economics / Re: Poll - If the reward halving is being changed, will you quit bitcoin? on: September 15, 2012, 12:37:34 AM
There is no voting. Just do nothing— your node will happily ignore idiots who made a totally worthless fork, no matter how many of them there are. Smiley

This post might as well say, "Will you quit bitcoin if some people install on their own computers a web interface to paypal called bitcoin?"
+1
Such a fork and how the sum of Bitcoin market forces changes would be very interesting though...  Cool

We have already seen a number of clones with different rules, which seem to predict which way it would ultimately turn out...

BTW, there would in fact be voting, because as the Buddhists say, "One cannot 'do nothing'! One can only 'do not doing'!" So, it would be voting by "not doing"... Cheesy

Plus, continuing EU malaise. (Looks like Greece will need another bailout, etcetera...)

I think all should know about Diaspora!

Looks like Diaspora is now officially a "Community Project"!  Smiley

Smiley
Wink

Undecided

Kiss

467  Local / Политика / Re: Гондурас on: August 01, 2012, 04:09:04 AM

Thank you for your time.
471  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Guns on: July 21, 2012, 03:46:44 PM
I haven't read the whole thread, but I find it interesting that some people think the situation in Colorado would have ended better if a dark theatre full of smoke and screaming people was also full of cross-fire.

I'd think if everyone around you was armed, the last thing you'd want to do in that case was start shooting as then someone else would likely assume you were the gunman and aim for you instead of the guy who started it.

I don't think Americans will ever change. The statistics are clear, just look at the graph posted early on in the thread. Countries which have strong gun control laws have way, way lower homicide rates and a notable lack of random massacres.
I think you are right in saying that "if everyone around you was armed, the last thing you'd want to do in that case was start shooting..." I think that would include the original shooter in this case.  Cheesy

If you read the Armed Citizen column i mentioned earlier, in most cases criminals flee as soon as they start getting return fire.

Like them, this guy was shooting as long as he was not in danger; as soon as the armed police showed up, he gave up!

The statistics are far from clear.  Cheesy  I think they have more to do with the socio-economic situation in a given country than gun laws. Check the gun laws of the countries that are above the US on the homicide rate list.

Seems that i remember some notable random massacres in countries with really strong gun laws...  Undecided

Can someone from Switzerland substantiate that most males of military service age are required to keep an automatic military "assault rifle" Cheesy in their houses? Even the Americans don't allow former soldiers to do that!

Why don't we hear about more Swiss mass murders, if the availability of high-capacity guns, and "assault weapons" is really their cause?

472  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Guns on: July 21, 2012, 03:03:16 PM
You said:
Today is why regular citizens of America need to be able to carry firearms.
And then you admitted:
It seems unfortunate to me that even though most of Colorado citizens are privileged to have the legal right to carry firearms, (most people in the world don't have that right) none of the ones at the scene availed themselves of the opportunity to be able to defend themselves or others...
I'm not seeing this as demonstrating how lenient gun laws are the solution.
I stand corrected: Today is why regular citizens of America need to be are able to carry firearms.  Cheesy

Furthermore, there are reports that Cinemark theaters have a long-standing "No Firearms except law enforcement" policy. How ironic that would be if true...    Sad

If one looks carefully at the list below that you provided, if i understand it right, it shows no correlation between permissiveness of the gun laws and gun death statistics.

I left the clearest examples of that in your list below:

For example, Vermont has
Gun deaths per 100,000: 8.4
Permissive gun laws: 3rd out of 50

California has
Gun deaths per 100,000: 9
Permissive gun laws: 50th out of 50

So, even though CA has the strictest gun laws, it has more gun deaths than VT with one of the most "lenient" gun laws. That lack of correlation appears in 26 of the 50 US states.

Bases on that, seems to me that even in the US states where one sees a correlation, the American experience suggests the null hypothesis (due to chance) with regard to gun-death rate/"gun-law permissiveness" correlation.

I find the statistics below interesting. A google search returned this result: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/01/11/20-deadliest-gun-states-from-mississippi-to-arizona.html

Today is why regular citizens of America need to be able to carry firearms.

And tell me how Colorado gun law was a hindrance to your dream.
It's not my dream.  Cheesy

It seems unfortunate to me that even though most of Colorado citizens are privileged to have the legal right to carry firearms, (most people in the world don't have that right) none of the ones at the scene availed themselves of the opportunity to be able to defend themselves or others...

Upon googling, i also see that unless an American citizen is from a US state with which Colorado has "reciprocity", even a citizen who is legally allowed to carry a firearm in another US state, she is not allowed to do so in Colorado:
Colorado gun laws

That restriction seems to apply even to American soldiers.  Huh

Also, looks like the Colorado and other US states' laws prohibit legal firearm carriers from carrying in places where mass shootings have already taken place in America, such as schools and universities.

Today is why regular citizens of America need to be able to carry firearms.

What a horrendous massacre over there in the state of Colorado!   Shocked  Cry Sad

Considering how many guns and mentally ill people there are in the world, regular citizens everywhere need the means to defend themselves. Even one sane, armed person could have made a difference...
475  Local / Новички / Re: Сокращение эмиссии on: July 18, 2012, 03:49:37 PM

Cheesy

476  Local / Ελληνικά (Greek) / Re: Ελλάς (Greece) on: July 17, 2012, 01:03:32 AM
Just did another search of pages in Greek. Still outside bitcoinx.gr and some blurbs on deltahacker.gr, i can't find much about B in Greek space.

I thought by now, it would at least be maligned as a scam somewhere in the Greek media...

So perplexing...  Huh
477  Local / Новички / Re: Основа криптовалюты on: July 15, 2012, 08:52:05 PM

Wink

478  Local / Новички / Re: Основа криптовалюты on: July 15, 2012, 07:45:21 PM

479  Economy / Speculation / Re: When will bitcoin hit $100? on: July 15, 2012, 07:31:53 PM

My guess is that now there are a lot of people/teams, as ingenious and educated or more so than "Satoshi", who are working on even better p2p currency.
(Current "Alternative" p2p currencies, are simply Bitcoin clones, using the same basic concept of mining, etc.)

Since B still can't even come back to its record against USD, i think such a new currency is likely to be unveiled before 100 USD is reached.

If not, i think Bitcoin's value will be suppressed as the result of centralization in mining, full-nodes and exchanges.

If the governments decide to crack down on them, particularly the exchanges and other Bitcoin<>Fiat middlemen, it's difficult to envision 1Btc=100USD...

480  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Class action Litigation vs. Bitcoinica Consultancy LTD & Intersango LTD on: July 15, 2012, 06:47:41 PM
At this early stage, lawsuits will have a chilling effect on trying to bring new people into the community, especially new businesses.
Jeff, I disagree completely. There have been plenty of cases in the past where bitcoins were stolen or deposits unrefunded, yet I am unaware of a single attempt to fix this. How can an attempt to resolve this issue discourage people from using Bitcoin?
+1 Is there a standing bounty for the identity and whereabouts of Tom Williams of MyBitcoin?

If not, then this so called "community" has already set a giant precedent that it can be ripped off any way that works, and all it will do is just crawl away to be ripped off the next time...

IMHO, MyBitcoin is who did the most chilling and damage to Bitcoin, and the latter still survived.

I agree that Amir and Co. did a great deal for "the community", and got slammed by Murphy's Law, or whatever it's called in English. (In Russia, we call it the Law of the Sandwich.  Smiley )

As an observer, seems to me that Zhou Tong bears most of the responsibility for hacking together and making available that miserable contraption, without much regard for security...

Amir & Co. just got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, and didn't back out, or take Bitcoinica offline and fix it, when it was wisest to do so.

It's hard to do the best thing in such complex circumstances...

Nevertheless, seems the only way for them to clear their name completely is to go through an external law suit, which will involve a police investigation.  Sad
