101  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What would speed up confirmation time? on: September 13, 2014, 07:22:08 PM
Honestly I think people is way too concerned about this. As soon as you see the payment has been done, and it's being processed in the blockchain, then who cares if it takes one hour to confirm? nothing will go wrong, as soon as the money is sent on the correct address you are set.
"nothing will go wrong"
Except double spending?
Nodes are setup so to reject any transaction that contains an input that has already been spent, including inputs that are spent on an unconfirmed transaction. In other words if you try to double spend your bitcoin the 2nd transaction will get rejected by the network.
102  Economy / Speculation / Re: Fed. Reserve manipulating Bitcoin price? on: September 13, 2014, 07:18:40 PM
gold can be manipulated easily because the same bar of gold is sold over and over.

a lot of people are (believe it or not) stupid enough to buy gold and leave it in a vault, only getting a paper claim on that gold.

Since the gold is often sitting for years or decades in the same vault, they can just resell the same gold and no-one is any wiser.

However, reselling the same bitcoin is pretty much impossible, as it's widely known rule #1 of bitcoin, if you don't own the private key you don't own the bitcoin.

Still people lost thousands, millions of USD in Mt. Gox because they trusted them with their Bitcoins. Their account showed a certain number of Bitcoins in their possession, but in reality Mt. Gox most likely didn't even possess those Bitcoins anymore! This is a fractional reserve and people effectively only got the "I owe you" paper slips, much like with the gold...
Brokerage firms that allow people to trade gold are much more regulated then bitcoin exchanges. They are subject to audits that make sure that customer funds are kept separate from funds of the firm. They make sure that all of the customer assets are accounted for.
103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: possible ways to make bitcoin's usage safe on: September 13, 2014, 07:13:35 PM
Buy the Trezor hardware wallet.

This is true, but the price is too high for someone not having at least 1 Bitcoin. But if the Trezor price could get much lower, it could help secure average Bitcoin user his Bitcoins. Compare the hardware and price of Trezor and cheap Smartphones, and you will see the Trezor price is too high
Even with someone with 1+ BTC, the cost of the trezor will add to the overall cost of holding bitcoin, which is suppose to be free.

EDIT: even with someone with 1 BTC, buying the trezor to keep the 1 BTC safe would work out to 25% of the value you are keeping safe
104  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin price PLUS $1000 - Would Bitcoin then see world wide acceptance? on: September 13, 2014, 07:12:08 PM
I don't think price = adoption.
Of course the price will correlate with adoption. The more people that use bitcoin obviously will have bought bitcoin. The more people that have bought bitcoin means that there is more overall demand for bitcoin
105  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Julian Assange Announces Plan to Leave Ecuadorian Embassy 'Soon' on: September 12, 2014, 03:34:10 AM
Julian Assange should return to Sweden to face inquiries about sexual assault.

Interpol still has a Red Notice allert on Julian Assange - arrest on sight and deliver to Swedish authorities.

Julian Assange can fabricate whatever story he likes, but London authorities still wait to arrest him. He must answer questions in Sweden, regardless of whatever charges or extradition attempts remain from the USA.

Man up, Assange! Go to Sweden and talk to the authorities there.
The problem with this is the timing of the accusations. They were made very shortly after wikileaks released documents and videos relating to the Iraq war that are of public interest but made the US look very bad. The charges are more likely then not politically motivated and not true.
106  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Michael Brown shooting , what really happened?? on: September 12, 2014, 03:27:54 AM
Cops tend to patrol black neighborhoods more. Also, black people are often shot for minor offences, like jaywalking. Additionally, black people are more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession, when compared to equal cannabis use from white people**

**Sources:

they patrol black areas more frequently because they are more likely to find criminals there.

And that is a direct violation of the Fourth. Race is not reasonable suspicion to get a warrant to get into someone's car, or pull them over and ask for papers if they look like they're Mexican. Let's fix this, as Americans, it is our moral duty to restore the constitution.

It is not okay to pull someone over because of their race, but there is nothing wrong with the police from being somewhere that the public is otherwise allowed to be legally. The police patrolling certain neighborhoods would meet this criteria.
107  Other / Politics & Society / Re: IRS claims it has LOST two years' worth of emails from former official Lerner on: September 12, 2014, 03:24:37 AM
I'm an IT professional, you would be surprised how many people just keep a .pst on their local hard drive with all their emails on it which eventually dies even though they are trained to put them on the network share.
I had a service company that maintained the backup tape drives for a government installation for about ten years.  They could produce anything they wanted, no ifs ands or buts.

It would be interesting to see who's been hired and who's been fired in that chain of command of people overseeing the backups, since this nonsense started.
I would not at all be surprised if we were to see people/companies let go right around when Lenner's computer "crashed" and as a result the backups are "not available". The Obama administration has stonewalled this investigation and has publicly came very close to breaking the law.
108  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Netflix leads tech giants' "go-slow" protest in battle over net neutrality on: September 12, 2014, 03:20:22 AM
Net neutrality is a very complicated subject. Companies need a reason to invest in their network to make the internet faster and more efficient. On the other hand, companies should be able to be competitive in the market place to be able to provide services to consumers and not be able to abuse ISP's huge networks.
109  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 5 million google accounts leaked on: September 12, 2014, 03:17:30 AM
That's the one without the passwords.
My account is in the list, but it would be interesting to see if it was really compromised, or if the list is just a net-scrub of publicly-available email addresses...
Anyway, 2-factor is the thing.  Cool
You can ask tvskit(https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=163342)
what the password was in database for your email. (He deleted passwords that hackers do not use this database)

I did so. He gave me a two letters from the start and end of the password - enough for me to see that it's my old password that I changed about 3 years ago (+-1 year). So the list seems to be valid, but dated. That password wasn't used anywhere else, so it definitely came from Google.
I think the list of passwords were likely sold many times on the darknet and eventually when the list had no more value it was published on the "internet". The hacker that got into satoshi's email address claimed that his information was being sold on the darknet.
110  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Atheist must swear to God -- or leave US Air Force on: September 12, 2014, 03:14:01 AM
a true atheist wouldnt care
An atheist would not want to swear to something they do not believe in. Generally speaking when someone takes an oath, they will swear to god that they are telling the truth, however if someone does not believe in god they will take an affirmation, which is essentially them swearing on their personal honor.
111  Other / Politics & Society / Re: what dont you guys get about Snowden and the NSA? on: September 12, 2014, 03:11:45 AM
Sure would be nice to see the NSA or their counterparts actually doing things to stop all this alleged terrorism rather than expanding all these databases to house text and conversations that mothers have w/ their daughters and such. Make the haystack so big and you won't find the needle.
This is exactly the problem. The NSA is creating databases that are so large that even if it picks up what is likely evidence of terrorist activity, they will likely not be able to detect it.
112  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Ten adverts using 9/11 disaster on: September 12, 2014, 03:09:24 AM
I think it is wrong to be promoting one's business off of the back of 9/11. I would say it would be appropriate to sponsor an advertisement that memorizes 9/11 but mentions the sponsor, but does not feature any of the "pros" of buying their product (like it only says brought to you buy amce company for example).
113  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 9 year old girl kills bloke stone dead with full auto machine gun on: September 12, 2014, 02:59:44 AM
What about the parents'?
Who decided a 9 year old should ,shoot an uzi
The parents are first to blame, what was in their head to take their daughter on shooting lessons? There are a lot of others interesting activities you can take your child too not on a shooting field.
I think the instructor is more to blame then the parents (although they are both responsible). The instructor was a professional and should have know that a 9 year old would not be strong enough to be able to be able to sufficiently handle an automatic gun like this.
114  Other / Politics & Society / Re: iCloud Nightmare - Hacked! on: September 12, 2014, 02:56:15 AM
Hmm.... so Reddit has taken down the sub-section which dealt with this issue. Although I am of the opinion that the privacy of these VIPs should be respected, the action taken by Reddit admins was disappointing. This is no different from the Swedish government prosecuting Piratebay admins and the United States authorities seizing Megaupload.  Angry
Reddit is accountable to the US government. If there are copyright/trademark claims against certain images hosted on reddit then they could be held liable or copyright/trademark infringement. This is why these kinds of images are more widely available on torrents because it is much less efficient to go after a large number of people who seed torrents.
115  Other / Politics & Society / Re: U.S. Treasury: Boston Marathon Bombings Were Not An “Act Of Terrorism”… on: September 12, 2014, 02:51:59 AM
I can't understand people who buy insurance unless it's absolutely necessary, while not as dramatic as a bombing we regularly get floods here in the UK and every time it happens the insurance companies have fucked off with peoples money and never paid it, get a secure savings account or put your money in Bitcoin and hide it away somewhere in case of an emergency.
Many floods do not happen enough to make it economical for people to be able to self insure as you describe. Many floods only happen once every several decades when enough people are involved and a long enough time period is used, however one could easily happen early after someone were to start to self insure themselves against this and they would essentially not have enough to cover the loss/repairs.
116  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The "woman" behind the ACA really pulls in the big bucks on: September 12, 2014, 02:48:31 AM
Her character is about as fraudulent as her face is. Common names to describe her are stretched face or dragon lady. When she talks her eyes pop out like golf balls and everything she says in public is scripted or prepared and none of it is from the heart. She's the team captain for the deranged psychos on capital hill.
She is also very liberal and is able to get her liberal friends to give money to both her campaign and the campaigns of her fellow crazy liberals.
117  Other / Politics & Society / Re: U.S. threatened Yahoo with big fines for not handing over private user data on: September 12, 2014, 02:46:59 AM
Since Snowden publicly released exactly what the NSA has been doing, several companies have fought requests by the government for increasing amounts of personal information about US citizens. I would not at all be surprised if this would be a hot topic for the next couple of election cycles.
118  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Police won't charge you, but they'll grab your money on: September 12, 2014, 02:45:03 AM
The best advise is to simply decline to answer any questions, and to keep anything that you would not want a police officer to see in plain view (including money). If they ask to search your car then you should withhold consent and this should stop the vast majority of issues.

There was an article in the Washington Post this week that talked about how much money local governments were making from these kinds of warrant-less seizures .
119  Other / Politics & Society / Re: ISIS Threatens Putin/Russia on: September 12, 2014, 02:38:33 AM
Al Qaeda has dealt a MASSIVE blow to USA, not in the forms of jets hitting buildings, but in the form of a totally unnecessary and wasteful $3 trillion dollar war, which in part led to massive economic damage to US. I wonder if these guys are just trying to provoke anyone they can to try to screw countries like Al Qaeda did?

This again?

Do some better research. I bet you think housing crisis happened because of the war expenses too.

Just a hint - global economics and national budget doesn't work the same way as a personal checkbook.

Did 9/11 and Iraq/Afghanistan war contribute to the economic depression in 2001/2002?

You need to educate yourself on the definition of 'depression'.

Sorry, recession. Did an economic recession follow the attack and the US actions in Iraq? Or did the Iraq war play no part in in the economic woes that US experienced in 2002 through 2004?
The economic woes you reference are the result of the popping of the economic bubble from the late 1990's. If anything the war in Iraq would have stimulated the economy because additional money was spent as a result of war in ways that are the most efficient.
120  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 911 - A Conspiracy Theory on: September 12, 2014, 02:32:16 AM

Haha yeah this is a classic watched it a few times when it first came out.  Around this time i was spent about a month trying to work out the truth of 9/11 and my conclusion was i needed to spend less time trying to work out the truth of 9/11.
The rabbit hole is very deep and you can get stuck down there while doing your 'research' and many people can't live normal lives when they become defeatists. This type of content is not something you can just start wrapping about at the water cooler at work, normally. Even if you're fast and loose w/ your piece you still run the risk of being 'that guy'.
I agree. I think it is very easy to get too involved in a conspiracy theory. It is also easy to make yourself look crazy when talking about these conspiracies.
