1731  Bitcoin / Press / [June 27, 2014] Silk Road Bitcoin Auction Opened by US Marshals Service on: June 29, 2014, 03:08:26 PM
The US Marshals Service opened its online auction today for more than 30,000 bitcoins seized from the servers of the nefarious internet marketplace Silk Road during the 2013 raid on the network.

With the auction block open, multiple bundles of the currency worth approximately $17.4 million will be up for grabs in an event that could affect public bitcoin market values. Bidding will take place between 6AM and 6PM on Friday, and winners will be announced by June 30.

The e-wallet of currency being auctioned off accounts for about 20 percent of the total amount confiscated during the bust. The remaining 144,342 bitcoins not available for bidding are being held by the FBI in a separate e-wallet that came from Silk Road’s jailed owner Ross William Ulbrecht, more commonly known by his online alter-ego "Dread Pirate Roberts."

Silk Road was an underground online marketplace known for transactions related to illicit drug and criminal activity. The FBI shut down the network in October of 2013, arresting Ulbrecht in the process on charges of narcotics conspiracy, running a criminal enterprise, conspiracy to commit computer hacking, and money laundering.

US Marshals to auction off bitcoins worth $17m from Silk Road bust. Read more here.

If the auction preparation process is any indication of the Marshals Service's abilities to navigate the bitcoin market and technology in general, we may be in trouble.

On June 18, the Marshals Service sent an email out to potential bitcoin bidders. But in a slick move, the Marshals Service unintentionally cc’d all of them on the same email and thus 40 potential bidders were suddenly made aware of who they would be up against in the auction. The people on the list then began communicating with each other and openly discussing the upcoming sale.

“The leak has definitely changed the dynamics,” Charles Allen, the chief executive of the Bitcoin Shop, and who was on the email, told the New York Times. He said the error also created unease among those involved.

Some of the groups expected to bid on Friday hail from the financial sectors on both coasts, including San Francisco-based hedge fund Pantera Capital Management and the New York brokerage firm SecondMarket.

“Those interested in bidding are the same close-knit group of buyers. They are inherently bullish on an unproven e-currency and technology,” Mark T. Williams, a finance professor at Boston University, said of the potential participants.

According to Williams, only a few buyers control a majority of the bitcoin market, thus the cryptocurrency is not a deeply traded or liquid commodity. He said the auction process will make this glaringly obvious.

You can now donate bitcoins to political campaigns. Read more here.

“It is simply a speculative bet not entered by new buyers, but by the same market promoters,” Williams said.

Much of the debate surrounding the auction has focused on whether it will affect bitcoin values in the public marketplace. On Wednesday, Citibank’s bitcoin analyst Steven Englander said in a letter that the auction would likely affect the cryptocurrency’s prices due to the fact that it will account for about 40 percent of the average daily bitcoin transactions.

“Pumping such a large quantity into the market should weigh on prices. The terms of the auction make it difficult for small bidders ($200,000 deposit, each of the nine blocks valued around $1.8 million), so the downward pressure is probably exacerbated by the limited number of investors interested in and capable of bidding,” he wrote.

Williams agreed that this type of large, single-seller bitcoin dump has the potential to affect values. He also said that the auction is a clear indicator that the government wants to get the currency off its hands before market prices drop. Williams expects the results of the auction will show the “smoke and mirrors” tactics of the public bitcoin market.

“The settled auction price will be very revealing of how thinly traded and the lack of true price transparency,” he said. “I doubt the winning bids will be even close to the official price posted by public exchanges.”

1732  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / California governor signs bill to bring bitcoin and other currency into fold on: June 29, 2014, 03:02:13 PM
California Governor Jerry Brown on Saturday signed into law a bill that clears away possible state-level obstacles to alternative currencies such as bitcoin.

The legislation repeals what backers said was an outdated California law prohibiting commerce using anything but U.S. currency.

Democratic Assemblyman Roger Dickinson, the bill's author, said earlier this week the bill reflects the popularity of forms of payment already in use in California like bitcoin and that even rewards points from businesses, such as Starbucks Stars, could technically be considered illegal without an update to currency law in the nation's most populous state.

California lawmakers approved the measure on Monday, just days after the failed Tokyo-based bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox received court approval to begin bankruptcy proceedings in the United States as it awaits approval of a settlement with U.S. customers and a sale of its business.

Mt. Gox was once the world's leading exchange for trading the digital currency, but shut its website earlier this year after saying that in a hacking attack it lost some 850,000 bitcoins, worth more than $500 million at current prices. The firm later said it found 200,000 bitcoins.

Brown, a Democrat, in his office's written announcement did not comment on the currency bill he had signed into law along with other legislation.

An analysis of the bill prepared for lawmakers mentions "community currencies", which are created by members of a local area along with participating merchants and are sometimes designed as a protest of U.S. monetary policies, among the forms of alternative payment methods now in use in certain parts of the United States.

The U.S. Marshals Service on Friday auctioned off about 30,000 bitcoins seized during a raid on Silk Road, an Internet black-market bazaar where authorities say illegal drugs and other goods could be bought.

1734  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / 5 things you should know about Bitcoin's competitors #bitcoin #facts on: June 28, 2014, 02:46:07 PM
Most people have heard of Bitcoin, the biggest and most successful of the "cryptocurrencies." But there are dozens of other online payment systems, known as "altcoins," that have sprung up to compete with Bitcoin. Here are some facts about them

There are hundreds of altcoins
One list counts 344 altcoins. Of course, some of these are extremely marginal. But there are 155 actively traded altcoins with a market value of at least $10,000. And 34 of them are worth more than a million dollars.

One of the altcoins, Dogecoin, has managed to cut through the clutter by adopting a silly internet meme as its mascot. That helped its value to skyrocket in late 2013 and early 2014. It's now the fifth-largest altcoin, with a market value of $24 million.

Most altcoins are tiny
If you add up the value of all Bitcoins, the total comes to around $7.6 billion. That's more than 10 times the value of all other cryptocurrencies put together.

Bitcoin's biggest competitor is one of the first altcoins to come on the scene: Litecoin. Litecoins are worth around $274 million. The next-largest, Nxt, is worth just $60 million.

Most altcoins are losing value against Bitcoin
Since the start of the year, the value of one bitcoin has fallen by about 25 percent. But the leading Bitcoin competitors have had a much worse year. The biggest Bitcoin competitor, Litecoin, has lost more than half of its value since January. Another big competitor, Peercoin has fallen by 80 percent. So has Dogecoin.

This might be cyclical, however. Litecoin lost value for most of 2013 only to have its value spike in December. The same thing might happen again.

New altcoins keep popping up

In recent months mature altcoins have been losing value more rapidly than Bitcoin. However, every few months a new altcoin catches the public imagination and leaps into the top 10. The latest example is Darkcoin, a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that was officially announced in January. Its market value skyrocketed in May from $1.50 to $11.75.

Today, the value of all Darkcoins in circulation is about $45 million.

The market is still figuring out the future of cryptocurrency
Why do we keep seeing cryptocurrencies appear, skyrocket in value, and then steadily decline? There's a ton of uncertainty about the future of cryptocurrency. Bitcoin has dominated the market since its inception five years ago, and most likely it will continue to do so. But it's possible that people will find a technical flaw in Bitcoin that will lead to its collapse. Or someone might invent a competitor that has crucial features Bitcoin lacks.

Most new altcoins try to offer technical advantages over Bitcoin. Darkcoin is focused on privacy. Litecoin is focused on faster transaction times and more democratic rules for processing transactions, a process known as mining. Nxt is designed to have a more energy-efficient mining system that's also resistant to attacks. Dogecoin emphasizes its friendly and enthusiastic community.

Will any of these innovations provide a decisive advantage over Bitcoin? It's not very likely — Bitcoin's popularity gives it a huge advantage. But if a Bitcoin competitor does dethrone Bitcoin, whoever owns a share will become wealthy. So every time a promising new cryptocurrency comes along, a certain number of people make speculative bets on it in hopes it's a Bitcoin killer. So far none of them have been, but people keep hoping.
