121  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Cost to perform a 51% attack on the BTC blockchain? on: April 17, 2020, 07:32:45 PM
Nicehash offers 1PH/s on the bitcoin chain for ~ 0.0168BTC

Bitcoin sees ~ 120 exahash. https://www.blockchain.com/charts/hash-rate
 = 120000 pentahash (?)

120000*0.168 = ~141.120.000 $ to get 51% hashing power Huh (this doesn't seem that expensive.)

Although they obviously don't have that much mining power for rent (I see nicehash only has ~ 10 TH), but theorethically speaking, i think such an attack could perhaps be profitable, that is if my calculations are correct..

Seems you need to remove a 0 and you get $14M /day.

Not that cheap if you think about it. You either do a double spent or fork and hope othera will believe you are a billionaire Smiley)
122  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Cost to perform a 51% attack on the BTC blockchain? on: April 17, 2020, 07:16:17 PM
https://www.crypto51.app/

If any of you are too lazy to click :  $468.961 / h (would have assumed a higher number tbh)

The price can be calculated in many ways. The way they do it is

Quote
Using the prices NiceHash lists for different algorithms we are able to calculate how much it would cost to rent enough hashing power to match the current network hashing power for an hour

But also mention that it's purely theoretical at least un BTC case. BCH is another discussion Smiley)

Fun tool!  Feature request:  Add, “I just don't remember when I did this shit!”

You woke up a 2year old thread to bump your new thread?
Your feud with that hacker guy looks very personal...

Cool project OP Smiley

Just for my knowledge... what is the cookie script for on that page?

125  Other / Meta / Re: The most iconic bitcointalk threads. History on Bitcointalk. on: April 16, 2020, 01:04:04 PM
There are plenty of people around on this forum that are less well known and have made massive contributions to bitcoin and crypto in general.

Just a few of them.

As far as I know POS was also mentioned here first: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=27787.0
Might want to add it to the list :p

Saw you mention this thread somewhere else and thought to ask here as well so it would not get lost in the noise.

From what I can tell POS was presented first on bitcointalk

Exhibit A:

Quote
Proof of Stake (PoS) was first introduced in a paper by Sunny King and Scott Nadal in 2012 and intended to solve the problem of Bitcoin mining’s high energy consumption
link: https://cointelegraph.com/news/the-history-and-evolution-of-proof-of-stake

Exhibit B:

I've got an idea, and I'm wondering if it's been discussed/ripped apart here yet:

I'm wondering if as bitcoins become more widely distributed, whether a transition from a proof of work based system to a proof of stake one might happen.  What I mean by proof of stake is that instead of your "vote" on the accepted transaction history being weighted by the share of computing resources you bring to the network, it's weighted by the number of bitcoins you can prove you own, using your private keys.

If this is the case this QuantumMechanic guy should definitely be added on the list of "Notable people" imo, even tho this one one of his last posts here...

Until now the only photo available for theymos is posted by an admin here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=555771.msg6055305#msg6055305
You can find theymos and ask him yourself if he is the great sato  Roll Eyes

That's one smart thermos right there!

Anyway, yea, even if someone of the admins is the creator of bitcoin, it doesn't matter to us. But I don't know what could happen if the goverment knew this guy Grin

Are you a FBI double agent? Too many questions... my spider sense is tingling!
128  Other / Meta / Re: POLL: Initial merit provided to older established accounts on: April 11, 2020, 11:12:22 AM
The issue boils down to one thing: they were here when it mattered!

And let's face it, editing a. csv file with 2 million lines if a bit nerve wreking for an old and reputable project like bitcointalk.
It's high time we get confortable with the idea that things will not be undone.

Also I ask you this: if you had a platform with aprox 2kk users what decisions would you have made? Of course, without knowing the future. What would you 2 years ago have done better?

Two more of those fake announcement threads need to be deleted. Both threads are self-moderated.

Two more for the collection. These fuckers post in pairs... Actually more than that...

131  Other / Meta / Re: How to find UID on: April 09, 2020, 06:27:03 PM
Apparently even CryptoTalk's campaign is going down. You can't join in with new accounts, so new people can't get paid for posting there. Cheesy

They obviously couldn't handle the spam.

Considering that 2 weeks ago he was asking the same question (more or less) ... I can see why !
132  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: High Definition Virtual Identity (iHDVi) on: April 09, 2020, 06:24:07 PM
I’m really interested to know what you think is the biggest problem with virtual identity ? ... so what do you think is the way to bring virtual characters close to real characters

Virtual identity would be the sum of digital footprints left by an individual (accounts, email addresses, own domains/website, browser history, shopping history etc). Not many would want to have those all linked.

Hope the answer is not KYVi (Know Your Virtual identity)
133  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: High Definition Virtual Identity (iHDVi) on: April 08, 2020, 03:58:42 PM
... we have an interesting idea...

Currently it is just at the idea stage or you have an MVP ? (whatever it is...)
134  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestion to make rank-up more difficult on: April 08, 2020, 10:25:58 AM
...

But being serious any changes would affect every single user, not just some "merit receiving sources" that manage to earn truck loads of merit (for their well thought out posts, don't get me wrong).
It's like tomorrow they changed the period for masters degrees. Not 1.5-2 years anymore. Now it's 7 !
Want to be called a "master"... well you better earn it ! Smiley)

Not really as simple as you describe it dude !
135  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: 100 Dollar Stable Token on: April 06, 2020, 07:21:49 PM
IMO there are some issues with the model presented

So people buy at $10 per coin and are not able to sell until it reaches $100. Coins are only bought and price increases (pump) and once they get to $100 many will want to sell and price will go down (dump)...

"prevent sell" must mean the coin would be traded only on your platform (not cool)

There are only 5 coins over $100 (according to CMC at least) . None are stable coins. Ever wondered why ?

How will you ensure the coin will have a stable value ? Mint ? Are they backed by stacks of real $100 bills ? Will you buy tokens off the market ? Coins don't just "stay stable" you know...

If you have a better idea to avoid the crash, please share and we would be happy to consider it.

Your coin, your problem Smiley

To me it just sounds like OneCoin 2.0 stable version ...

136  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: 100 Dollar Stable Token on: April 06, 2020, 06:19:05 PM
Thanks for your encouragement, this is what all we need. Yes, you are right but the token sale will start only once the coin price reaches to 10.00 USD and it will be only a very limited number of token to buy per day and per user. The buyer can't sale token before it reaches to the final price (otherwise it will crash).

Buy an $10. Nobody sells until $100.
This should be the Oxford Dictionary definition of a pump & dump.
137  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Anyone With A Clue How To Do This? on: April 06, 2020, 10:46:13 AM
Have a look here https://www.coingecko.com/en/widgets

Many sites have crypto price widgets. Google is your friend!
138  Other / Meta / Re: Sticky in Electrum subboard on: April 04, 2020, 10:41:58 PM
The information from the sticky thread should come from a trustworthy source and be updated.

Fair point!
Will lock this thread then ! Thanks for the reply Smiley

There should be exactly one Bitcoin wallet for Android named Bitcoin Wallet for Android, made by Andreas Schildback.

Good to know! Will read more about it... shamed to say not familiar with it
