1  Other / Politics & Society / UK Minister Says Cryptocurrencies Will Not be Regulated as Gambling on: July 21, 2023, 10:59:46 AM
The UK Government has rejected calls from a parliamentary committee to regulate cryptocurrency as a form of gambling as opposed to a financial service.

Financial Secretary to the Treasury Andrew Griffith said:

“[Treating crypto trading as a form of gambling] would run completely counter to globally agreed recommendations from international organisations and standard-setting bodies, including the International Organisation of Securities Commissions and the G20 Financial Stability Board.”

The minister went on to add that treating crypto trading as gambling would fail to prevent the commingling of customer assets. It would also restrict the ability of financial regulators to oversee potential issues such as market manipulation and financial risk management practices.

Earlier this year, the Treasury Select Committee suggested that “unbacked” cryptocurrencies should be regulated as a form of gambling, given the significant risks posed to consumers.

In its report the committee stated that currencies such as bitcoin “have no intrinsic value and serve no useful social purpose” while consuming large amounts of energy. They noted that the digital currencies are also being used by criminals to launder money and hide the proceeds of crime.

However, the Treasury has now stated that it ‘firmly disagrees’ with this particular aspect of the report.

Griffith added:

“The committee’s proposed approach would risk creating misalignment with international standards and approaches from other major jurisdictions, including the EU, and potentially create unclear and overlapping mandates between financial regulators and the Gambling Commission.

HM Treasury and the Financial Conduct Authority will work with the industry to ensure crypto firms are made fully aware of the standards required for approval.”

Earlier this year the government outlined its plans to regulate the crypto industry, consistent with its approach to traditional finance. At the time Griffith said:

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to grow the economy and enable technological change and innovation – and this includes cryptoasset technology. But we must also protect consumers who are embracing this new technology – ensuring robust, transparent, and fair standards.”

8  Economy / Gambling / A new BIG player has entered the crypto poker arena - Poker.com on: April 19, 2020, 09:52:27 PM
It appears that Poker.com has stealth-launched a new BTC online poker site.

They are running some interesting promotions - for example "the daily MILLIONS freeroll" - which gives away 1M satoshis every day.
Not much traffic there yet (i see the freeroll only has about 20 players!) - but interesting to see the owner of this site launching a poker site - maybe a challenger for the established players?!

10  Economy / Gambling discussion / Quick Survey: why do you specifically use crypto to gambooool ? on: January 08, 2020, 06:49:00 PM
Hello Degens

I am doing a little research on WHY people are betting /gambling online with btc/crypto from various countries/states worldwide, and was hoping bitcointalk members  can be of some assistance.
I would specifically like to know (if you happen use crypto to gamble online) why you do so.

eg is it because you:
  • can pay Less vig in some cases?
  • wider game selection can gamble on games like minesweeper, paper rock scissors and other novelty games?
  • "provably fair" games
  • cannot bet in your current location
  • crypto sites might offer markets unavailable elsewhere
  • others ?

any info appreciated, if you can give me your state/country that would be helpful too for context.
I will happily publish the results of the survey later ITT if anyone is interested/cares.

Thanks

12  Economy / Gambling discussion / Dutch gambling authority fines 10 companies a total of €3.5m this year on: December 29, 2019, 10:44:47 PM
"The Dutch gambling authority (Kansspelautoriteit) fined companies offering online betting and casino / gambling games in the Netherlands a total of €3.5m in 2019, an increase of more than 50% the 2018 fine total.
.... the rise is due to both a rise in the maximum fine (to €200,000) and a rise in the number offenders being penalized."

"The Netherlands senate voted to open the gambling market to domestic and foreign gaming operators as early as 2021. Gambling firms will need to apply for a licence, and will be forced to pay gambling taxes at 29%, - one of the highest rates in Europe."

"Most of the major European gambling and online casino groups have now been fined by the Dutch watchdog - so many of them will need to wait for a cooling period before their application can be accepted." - source
