Yes. Only the EUR value of the purchase goes into the books. Alternatively one can book the BTC onto one account and declare the value of that ballance according to the exchange rate at the time of the tax declaration. This makes more sense when one starts to also pay for business expenses in BTC. We will upgrade the wallets of the bars / restaurants with nfc chips so the waiters can just walk up to a table, tell the amount to be paid, transmit the address and once they walked back behind the bar they can already check if the payment is on the way. Unconfirmed transaction on the blockchain is enough. Works fine. Joe

I had the honour of making the first BTC payment at Fabelhaft
Now imagine how I felt: even though I have been _selling_ beers for bitcoin for almost 2 years now, this was the first tme I could actually _buy_ one . Joe

Vinyl Living Room Longplayer Graefestraße 80 10967 Berlin Grossartige Auswahl an Vinyl. ROOM77 http://room77.de/Graefestrasse 77 10967 Berlin The restaurant at the end of capitalism. Good riddance! To Blockchain Eternity! Joe

This is epic! I'm coming to Berlin in a few months and this is exactly what I needed to hear.
Please contact me before you book your hotel, there is one on the list to join, they just don't wanna make it official yet to be able to learn some more about bitcoin before they start. Joe

(mods I know you will want to move this to 'marketplace' but I believe it has some significance and should stay out here at least for a little while ) Hello community! We would like to announce the rollout of what we call 'the Bitcoin-Kiez' ('Kiez' being Berliner slang for 'neighbourhood'). While we were celebrating Bitcoin Friday and partying away with a lot of Bitcoiners at ROOM77, our enabler-team (Yossarian, Goonie, Ente and me, aka the Crypto Economics Consultig Group) went out to enable three other places in our neighbourhood to accept Bitcoin. Well, I was merely standing by and smiling . So these are the first 4 shops (meaning brick-and-mortar bussinesses) on the Graefekiez in Berlin where you can pay in Bitcoin now. We will add more places to this list as / if they join in. Here are the first participants: Primo Maggio http://www.primomaggio.de/Graefestraße 10 10967 Berlin Original Italian food at it's best. Gotta love the homemade antipasti, pasta, deserts and a great selection of original Italian drinks. The owner, Paolo, will allways make sure that no customer leaves without a smile on their face. Fabelhaft Bar Schönleinstraße 6 10967 Berlin Floor and Bram are making some of the best cocktails you can find in Berlin. You will allways and instantly feel welcomed there and meet an international audience. Vinyl Living Room Longplayer Graefestraße 80 10967 Berlin Nadim has an unbelievable selection of rare and hard-to-find vinyl records to offer. Concentrating on oldschool to hiphop, his record store is a meeting-point and hangout for well known DJs not only from Berlin. ROOM77 http://room77.de/Graefestrasse 77 10967 Berlin Picture shows part of the Bitcoin crowd last friday at ROOM77, which has lost it's exclusivity being the only Bitcoin-bar in the neighbourhood that night. But as I have pointed out on friday: I never in my life had that much fun and was so happy about loosing something . Stay tuned and as we say over here: 'To Blockchain Eternity!' Joe

Otoh, I am absolutely with you. Casascius, I don't understand your concerns at all. This is not about donating to a museum and wondering how to properly get the donations into the accounts or pay taxes or something. This is about a money museum documenting how the new money functions. Period. And that cannot be done any better than by receiving transactions on the address of the coin, displaying these transactions somehow and explaining something like: 'People from all over the world are loading value up to this very coin displayed here by sending microtransactions which are free of charge in the Bitcoin economy. This value can only be taken off this coin and spent by breaking it's seal and accessing the private key to it's address.' Now that would explain something and on the other hand really inspire people and make them curious about this kind of money. And that's precicely what a museum is for. So please everybody, send them some 0...1337... or something! Joe

Unfortunately it is not. There was a Bitcoin superstore before, bitcoinz.ca, run by a fucker named awozny here on the forum, who delivered the first test-orders and ran off with our money when he got proper orders prepaid. His real name is Anthony Wozny from Canada, has anyone ever heard from him again or could let me know where I could find him so I could physically let him experience what I think about scum like him? Sorry, didn't mean to interrupt your thread but CNR . I am happy that you made this store and am looking forward to buying from you! Joe

Hi there! This is ROOM77 in Berlin, the restaurant at the end of capitalism . You may have heard of us. On Bitcoin Friday we will actually do much more than just offer discounts (23%) and free drinks (Pampero shots) to anyone paying in Bitcoin. We have invited anyone being curious and interested about Bitcoin (consumers as well as merchants) to a day and night where they can meet experts from the Berliner Bitcoin Stammtisch and CECG to have Bitcoin explained, questions answered, get help installing software, actually buy Bitcoin and spend them again saving money. Well, to EXPERIENCE Bitcoin. This will be pretty big as after 1.5 years or so having Bitcoin here, people in the neighbourhood are pretty aware of it. On the same day we will announce the (at least) 3 more places in the neighbourhood that start accepting BTC too on this very day, this being a major step towards the world's first Bitcoin-Kiez ('Bitcoin-Neighbourhood') and implementing it as an 'alternative local currency with global reach'. Here's what I suggest to anyone outside of Berlin who would like to support this: if you know someone in Berlin who you would like to invite for dinner (yes we supposedly make Berlin's best burgers according to restaurant critics but also serve other homemade Texan food) or drinks (beers, spirits, cocktails), just do so remotely! Send them here and tell them to eat and drink and you pay their bill remotely from wherever you are! This is not meant to make us profit (we grant 23% discount on bills paid in BTC that day plus getting drunk on Pampero rum if they want to for free) but to promote Bitcoin. You can make your friends aware of the new currency and remotely paid bills are always a nice way to give people a convincing experience with Bitcoin. If you want to do so pls message me here or mail me on joerg at room77.de and let me know who you are sending over and I will make sure they will get a nice treatment. We are very well known in the community and a lot of people here will confirm to you that hardly anyone walks out of our bar without a smile on their face . To blockchain eternity and beyond! Joe Detailed thread in German to be found here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=122727.msg1321222#msg1321222Our address here: www.room77.de

Hallo Community! Well then, to Blockchain eternity and beyond! Joerg Platzer (Betreiber des ROOM77 und Mitglied der Crypto Economics Consulting Group)

Deutschmark had rapid inflation during WW2. If some one had savings it would be whipped out.
No. the Deutsche Mark only came into existence after WWII. What you say is true though for the Reichsmark, which was in use before and during the war. All paper and book money was rendered worthless. But the Reichsmark was also issued as gold and silver coinage for the paranoid part of the people who would not trust papers and books. These coins still today have the same buying power as back then even though their emitting entities have ceased to exist long ago.

Tourists can exchange their foreign currency, including BTC, for pesos on the blue market (black market/real market).
Thats right. In fact, a tourist visiting Argentina would have 25% more spending money, if they bring their spending money in the form of bitcoins, and not electronic cards. I will try to post this information on travel forums, which should promote bitcoin adoption. Oh please feckin' do, will ya!? Let us know the results or let us know where you started a discussion so we can join in! Joe

They've recently nationalized the oil companies, it's sad to see them go down this route.
They've recently re-socialised their wealth, it's great to see them going up this route . Joe

That clearly states that they will be adopting Bitcoin, since the local currency of the internetz is bitcoin, no? Would also take out the barrier of some developer's bottom, no? ++jp

Yes, worked fine that time, thanks. That on prime time TV is really huge, arte might not be the most popular network but they're one of the most trusted and putting this on right after prime time news on the current financial situation... omg @joecooin would love to buy beer with bitcoin sometime and I'm sure I'm not the only one, please post the address of the bar and good luck with the celebrity status Thanks! Yes it's ROOM77 in Berlin Kreuzberg. We hold the monthly Bitcoin meetup in Berlin here. We have been using the bar as a vehicle to get positive media-coverage about Bitcoin out there for more than a year now. It makes it much more feasable to show how someone pays his dinner and beers with that currency so journalists love that. The result by now is a real lot of attention in the media (tv, radio, and uncounted print-articles in the major German press) which is all about the positive sides of Bitcoin instead of money laundering and drug trafficking. This thing on arte is a milestone really though. From a communication strategic point of view it is a 100% success. I explain how easy, simple and cheap it is to pay with Bitcoin, Birgitta (and hey, she is a honorable member of the icelandic parliament) explains why she thinks society desperately needs a financial system that is independent and decentraliced, Mike Hearn explains that with this technology we can build whole financial markets without any banks or central organisations and at the end I give out a little rant about Western Union and banks alltogether for fucking over the poorest people in society and that that will not be possible anymore in a Bitcoin world. And the way it is embedded and announced on the evening news show leaves no doubt that this is to be taken seriously and not some nerdy toy anymore. Thanks to Birgitta and Mike for their time! We made these interviews on the London conference. So I raise my glass to bring out the toast that we have established here at ROOM77 and say: 'to blockchain eternity!' Joe

Sorry I started this in German, I thought I was on the German board . It is a 2min documentary on the evening news of arte, which is a french/german tv station, the 'culture channel'. The great thing is that the anchorwoman goes right from 'financial crises', 'more bank bailouts' and 'people don't trust this anymore' to 'and here is Bitcoin'. On the evening news show. And then comes that overall positive report about Bitcoin. I shall provide an ogg or something soon, I do have access to the raw material. It will stay available on the arte site anyhow. Disclosure: I'm the guy who runs that bar. Joe
