1  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some important bitcointalk [GUIDE] for beginners. on: December 16, 2020, 03:39:25 AM
Why do we need spamlists of threads, when Beginners & Help has a sticky guide to help find important threads?

The sticky guide has links to forum rules, newbie technical help, and links to wallets thread, important advice about trust, important security advice, warnings about malware, glossary of forum terminology, and many other important threads... and many of these threads link to other threads, with even more detailed information. Most of these important threads are not even linked here. Did OP see all of them?

Oh, but this list has links to Defi guides, Uniswap, and other scams/scam-laden environments so that Newbies can get scammed better. Angry

Advice for Newbies: Avoid Defi like plague! If you don't know why, ask in the Wall Observer.
2  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some advice for Newbies. on: December 16, 2020, 03:38:10 AM
I am a Newbie.  So I know how many problems a newbie can face.  So I would like to give some advice to the newcomer from this little knowledge of mine.
 1.  First of all you are newbie, you know nothing about this forum.  So you have to have a lot of interest to know about this forum.
There are few newbies who actually know more than most of people on here, they are only "lurking" on this forum. They only didn't interact with people too much.

This is absolutely true.

Regular posters often forget that probably most readership is lurkers, and passers-by. Forum regulars are only the tip of the iceberg for readership.

If you forget this, you can look like a fool! Don't forget your audience.

Some case examples:

This forum has high rank in search engines, links from Bitcoin Wiki, etc. Anyone who reads about Bitcoin, will read some from this forum.

When nullius was a Newbie, he was immediately accused of being old regular's alt account.  LOL.  Much speculation, many conspiracy theories.  He lurked for years before registering.  (Then lurked 8 more months before posting.)

I know some guy who has a Newbie account with 3 posts. He has lurked for years. He knows this forum better than 99% of regulars. Just does not talk.

Most casual readers, occasional lurkers, and passers-by probably never even register an account.

To be a forum regular is a sort of a lifestyle - and it is a huge time sink. Not for everyone.

And my #1 advice to Newbies: Lurk more! Only talk if you have something to say. Don't make a post only to make a post. (Sigspammers and bounty chasers, please smash your computers with sledgehammer.)

Quote
5.  Legendary members are very helpful.  So don't miss any of their replays.  Missing it will probably deprive you of much to learn.
Not all, there are few who only shitpost. That's why i said don't rely/depends too much with the post from high ranked account.

Many "Legendary" only shitpost. Also, many are hacked/bought account. If you see "Legendary" with bad behavior, look for the red trust!

Quote
7. You can also learn more about Bitcoin with the help of internet
Yeah, i do believe most of people doing this instead reading books.

Sad

He's right about following up with hero & legendary members in this forum, the informations they give will really help in enlightening your knowledge as newbie.
Maybe following sticky threads should be more helpful to know more about this forum while we are still new on this forum

YES! This. Thank you. Finally some good advice...

4  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Giving merit to newbies for good replies on: December 07, 2020, 09:56:00 AM
As noble as you're idea may be - and I really do believe it is -, it's probably not the best one. I've seen a lot of newbies recently who've gotten Merits for a few posts here and there, where the Meriter hadn't really looked any deeper in the newbie's post history. As soon as these guys reach Jr. or Member level, they join a campaign, at which point they start flooding the forum with spam. I don't have to tell you that many of them are here for one reason only: bounties.

I'd warmly recommend you to do at least a minimal quick check of the poster's history to make sure it's not a complete shitposting spammer who had one lucky shot. Otherwise, you might be unwillingly sponsoring a (future) spammer.

Very true. Always check post history! Especially with Newbies, but not only! Every experienced user should know this.

Also, it is usually unwise to send more than 1 merit at a time to Newbie - it is risky. Newbie does not have much history for you to judge. Merit thresholds for ranking up are way too low. Spammer needs only a little bit of merit for reaching Member or Full Member, way too easy - then he can make money by filling the forum with trash. Only send >1 merit per post to Newbie if it very much looks like not a spammer.

Well - I will try this.

My best posts are, in my opinion, my "artistic" posts. But maybe not to everyone's taste.

I think so far, my best post of general interest was the post that earned the very first merit for my account. However, I do not want to ask for any merit for it. I am proud it got 2 merits from 2 different people, only because it is a good post - not because of asking for anything. Please don't ruin it.

hatshepsut93, you participated in that topic. I replied to you several times there. Is it not wrong to ask you to consider meriting a post you saw, which you did not already merit? Isn't merit system working best when you see good post in the course of discussion, and you send it merit because you think it is good?

For same reason - I will not ask you to consider this post and this post in the same topic - two more of my best, both of which received merit from people who just thought they were good.

I think that this post deserves at least 50 merits - for reason that it shows I am not trying to rank up to spam the forum:

Re: How you can earn money from bitcointalk.org?

"SHUT UP AND EAT YOUR SPAM!"

OP is very wrong.

If good user here for discussion, then rank up and merit will happen naturally. Don't even think about how to do it! (unless, lolz, you are like me, Newbie want to post noncommercial images with no paying for Copper account... stupid restrictions only made because of spammers and other abusers! Less than 24 hours after signup, I already got 1 merit I need... this is my 14th post, next activity period starts in hour and a half... I will post images freely, starting in about two weeks from now. Cheesy)

Best users are those who DO NOT CARE too much about mere status symbols = rank and merit. (Same like in the rest of life.)

I decided now I want 100 merits, so I can have avatar. AVATAR NOT FOR RENT. I want to put a censored version of fine art there, to make a point about freedom and culture. Or maybe something else... I did not decide yet.
5  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Another fake electrum wallet on google playstore on: December 07, 2020, 09:18:06 AM
-snip-
Downloading the original electrum from electrum.org is the best rather than using third party sites like Google playstore to download it for not to download the fake ones.
Download the Android version of Electrum that matches the smartphone specifications (armeabi/arm64) from the official site:
https://electrum.org/#download; https://download.electrum.org/

Also, verify the PGP signature and make sure it matches ThomasV's public key or fingerprint:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/spesmilo/electrum/master/pubkeys/ThomasV.asc
As an example:

After that, install the Electrum APK file manually on the Android smartphone.

THIS! Thank you. Even in case Electrum website is hacked (hypothetical), checking the PGP signature will save your security.

Also I see 2 different topics about fake Electrums in Google Store on front page of Beginners & Help now. Necessary? No. There is so much fake software. If new topic for each one, it will be a whole forum.

Note: A longer version of the following was deleted three times by moderators. I now cut the scam documentation below, on hypothesis that something in it triggered a spam filter bot (probably necessary - and I think deletion was faster than humans report or respond).

My apologies for the noise, for those who get new posts mailed. I had "*" all PM blocked, so I didn't realize - that is why I reposted. The first time, I thought I must have hit the delete button by accident when trying to edit, correct quoting mistake. After repost disappeared, I unblocked PM, tried again, got PM notice and confirmed in modlog.

It is not only about Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash.
Sure, there are plenty of bitcoin forks out there, but the difference is that none of them pretend to be BTC like BCash does. Bitcoin Gold, Bitcoin Private, even Bitcoin SV to an extent, present and market themselves as different coins. Even although Bitcoin SV falsely claims to be the original implementation of bitcoin, it doesn't pretend to be BTC.

Unfortunately, in the substance, BSV is even worse than BCH. They don't claim to be "BTC". They claim that BTC is a scam, there is only one Bitcoin, the one and only Bitcoin is BSV. How far they go turning truth to lies, lies to truth? They present Faketoshi as a reluctant hero, returned to save Bitcoin from the BTC fake-coin scammers. "After a period of denial, Dr. Wright admitted that he is Satoshi Nakamoto" - see below.

BCH is bad enough scam, exploiting Roger Ver registration of bitcoin dot com domain. BSV is badder, bolder, more brazen.

BSV propaganda turns everything upside-down and inside-out. The BSV scammers accuse others of their own wrongdoing. They say that BTC is the scam, BSV is the real Bitcoin by "Dr. Craig Wright a.k.a. Satoshi Nakamoto".

note: next activity period begins 2020-12-16T03:40:00Z. After this, I will make Jr. so my embedded images will show! For now, I ask to people >= Jr. Member rank: please Sir, quote me so others can see the important images.

This is cropped from a BSV propaganda image, displayed in full below, I found on the BSV shill thread:

As you can see, not only it claims BSV is Bitcoin. It claims that BTC is *not* Bitcoin. They say that BSV is the one and only real Bitcoin, on authority of (fake) Satoshi Nakamoto himself.

On the main BSV shill thread on this forum, they also have a small army of sockpuppet shill accounts... who accuse everybody else of being sockpuppet "trolls". I have seen BitcoinFX, Cryptotourist, JayJuanGee, and nullius all accused of being sockpuppets of the same "troll". If o_e_l_e_o posts in that thread, he will immediately be called sockpuppet of nullius, inter alia. It shows the extremes of BSV total inversion of the truth. Same as they do with identifying "real Bitcoin".

The following excerpt from a much longer post was selected carefully by me. Please read it carefully to understand how deeply, subtly insidious this propaganda is. Text size is in the BSV post.
...snnnnniiiippp...

see:
http://cypherspace.org/CPL/

We could argue about this if it's good or bad, but I am not interested.
All I can derive from the site you linked is "open source" so no argument needed there.

It is much more than that.

Cypherpunks Public License is from cypherpunks, a part of the history leading up to Bitcoin. For more general information, see: Bitcoin: The dream of Cypherpunks, libertarians and crypto-anarchists

On the topic here: "Open source" is often copyrighted. Bitcoin source code is MIT licensed. Legally, it is copyrighted code with an original author of unknown identity, pseudonym "Satoshi Nakamoto".

CPL is not directly applicable to Bitcoin. But in the abstract, it shows concepts that answer the question of who can defend the Bitcoin name. Nobody controls Bitcoin. There is no legal Bitcoin trademark, and no entity with proprietary right to hold a trademark on the name "Bitcoin".

It would be dangerous if such an entity existed. Craig Wright has tried fraudulently claiming copyright of Bitcoin source code. If he could, he would probably claim trademark on "Bitcoin" name for his scam.

I myself disagree with CPL in some parts. But it succinctly summarizes the key concepts here.

the site you linked

Not a random site. It is the old personal website of Adam Back, the inventor of Hashcash (as cited in the Bitcoin Whitepaper, footnote 6). There is stuff there very interesting to history that led to the creation of Bitcoin.

Illiterate n00bs see nothing. It would be a shame to explain.

case in point of "shame":

hacker1001101001 , you shitcoin spammer Imbecile ,, you are hypocrite with double standards supporting suchmoon attack on nullius for calling out suchmoon double standards. suchmoon enforces her local rules on her threads. suchmoon defies nullius rules on nullius threads. suchmoon thinks the rules do not apply to her, and calls nullius "a cunt" for standing up against her hypocrisy.

The-None-Above-All is copycat of Nullius joke based on Nietzsche. It is inside joke of smart people who read Nullius posts .It needs Latin, German , and Englisch to understand . "nullius", "keiner", "none".

The anthem of Terra Nullius: "Keiner, keiner, über alles!" = "none, none above all!"

Nullius is the Glorious Leader of Terra Nullius, population: 0. By law, every citizen of Terra Nullius must sing "keiner, keiner, über alleS," or else be slapped with a large trout. None Above All!

The Great Seal of Terra Nullius (nullius avatar, now censored due to sexual implications of the Eternal Cunt) is also All and None. Also sprach Nullius.

cRyptohUnter hates Nietzsche. CH must be a closeted homosexual, given his mental fixation on anal felching. Nietzsche does not like to think about anal felching. What makes the forum looks magnificent is that, it's filled with much knowledge and exposure into crypto.

"What makes the forum looks magnificent is that, it's filled with" great places to show your paid signature, bump your activity, by posting in SPAM MEGATHREAD. Did you even read OP? It is shitposter who does not want knowledge.

I am a newbie here right now and I have seen lots of discussion group on Bitcointalk from where we can get more than appropriate amount of knowledge related to crypto. But I am also wondering what is the best advantage of using Bitcoin forum besides getting knowledge.

Another completely useless post:

Except for my posts, all posts after page 1 are useless blah blah blah generic fluff with paid signature , and not even responding to OP.
17  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Noticed something and want to share. on: December 02, 2020, 01:19:02 AM
Overall, it sounds like you are asking how to write "quality posts" to earn merit, and that's already a wrong approach, because merit is not some social ladder to be climbed. Just use this forum like you'd use any other forum, and first and foremost, follow its rules.

It is the problem with merit system. Merit system makes people optimize for merit. Like search engines make people SEO instead of focus on only best content, see:

Craig Wright must be spending big on SEO. Recently I searched for some bitcoin information. (not saying search term, to not give faketoshi scammers any tips.) SERP position #2 was a page from a so called "Bitcoin Wiki" at a BSV scam site. SERP position #3 was the real Bitcoin Wiki.

I urge anyone with real SEO skills to evaluate the search engine influence of real Bitcoin sites vs scam sites

real Bitcoin vs BCH sites
real Bitcoin vs BSV sites

real Bitcoin information sitse have the problem, many are made by volunteer effort. Core developers focus on code and protocol improvements. Bitcoiners focus on talking about Bitcoin. Scammers put resources on domain names, SEO... what brings in the new money from people who don't know any better

For merit system to work, people should IGNORE MERIT WHEN WRITING , only think to send merit when reading.

But that is idealistic wishing for perfect world. If perfect world, no need for merit system anyway... people just do the right thing.

By the way, did you just confuse me and Cryptomint9?

Error, sorry, I corrected the post.

And please, next time reply in the original thread and avoid spamming others, as CryptocurencyKing has just said: this way you could to something positive for a change and bump my services.

Why I want to bump your services?

Owner of bitcoin.com: Roger Ver (MemoryDealers), very distrusted person

People should stop to link it. I just saw some person warn about scam, link to bitcoin.com article about scam, send people to other scam.

One such new tactic implies that investors can buy or own shares in Bitcoin itself, as if it was a corporation. This tactic is for example part of an elaborate plot used by individuals behind an operation called Bitcoin Inc, to con ignorant investors into mistaking the operation for “the real Bitcoin”.

...

https://news.bitcoin.com/no-you-cant-buy-shares-in-bitcoin/

People needs to be careful, knowing what bitcoin is all about very well to not be a scam victim by people that take advantage of ignorant people.

Bitcoin has no central authority. Nobody controls Bitcoin. Advantages , disadvantages and tradeoffs.

It is much worse than Filicius says. "dubious practices"?

bitcoin.com is a SCAM site. Do not link to it. Thanks for warning about scams, don't send people to other scam.

People needs to be careful, knowing what bitcoin is all about very well to not be a scam victim by people that take advantage of ignorant people.

Owner of bitcoin.com: Roger Ver (MemoryDealers), very distrusted person

There is now active topic in this: To newcomers: make sure when you buy bitcoin you are buying bitcoin!

what you say:
to con ignorant investors into mistaking the operation for “the real Bitcoin”.

It's what bitcoin.com does.

Back in 2017 a hyped up trend started where people kept creating copies of bitcoin and called them bitcoin something (like bitcoin gold for example), sold it to newbies, pumped and dumped it a little and pocketed the money.
All of these coins are useless, weak with security flaws, without any innovation or future and only get some pump and dumps every now and then.

Among these altcoins there is a notorious one that has been scamming a lot of newcomers by telling them it is "bitcoin". This shitcoin is called "bitcoin cash" with the ticker "BCH". This altcoin is owned and controlled by centralized entities one of whom owns a high ranking website called bitcoin.com which is one of the main places that scammed newcomers a lot in the past.
They went as far as changing the name of "bitcoin" to something else while calling their own shitcoin which they sold to newbies "bitcoin". See the screenshot below:
