You need to design something that is below 1500w current draw, so it can be used on a normal household circuit. With the 5x more power usage per hash than your original specification, "rigbox" can't be plugged into anything beyond a specialized circuit with a high-amperage nema plug.
You should have a rackmount backplane that can take single-equivalent cards, so a "blade server" can come with a few, and be upgradeable to ~20. With adequate cooling blowing in the right direction.

Too big with too much white space. The same complaint I have with the Qt version, it can't resize, and any program as simple that can't work at 640x400 is not well thought out. Likewise, when on the transaction or address book tab, the window can't be made bigger, if you want to grok lots of information.

LOL it took until 2008 for someone to realise that MS had messed that up in Exchange and write an RFC that was actually wrong? I wonder how hard it is to delete an RFC that someone came up with. ... and why did anyone bother to agree to that  Do any mail servers except exchange do that "MUST BE"? I'm pretty sure the majority of mail servers on the internet don't do that. If there's a difference between standards and how Microsoft does stuff, it is because Microsoft does stuff wrong. Your mail server may send either kano or Kano or even KANO@ emails to your email box. My email server might send deepceleron@ and DeepCeleron@ to different mailboxes. Nothing along the line can mess with the case of the email address that you type in to email me, otherwise deepceleron might get DeepCeleron's email. |

You should add a thing to sha256 a text field. I liked having the list of emails be hashes. Done. Works for emails, I'm not doing any input validation, so you can probably confuse it by pasting a bunch of junk into the input field. Don't forget to lower case the input for those who don't realise that upper/lower case is not relevant in email addresses  People just need to remember how they typed their email address. You can not alter the case in email addresses, as they can be case-sensitive. rfc5321 says: The local-part of a mailbox MUST BE treated as case sensitive. Therefore, SMTP implementations MUST take care to preserve the case of mailbox local-parts. In particular, for some hosts, the user "smith" is different from the user "Smith".If a user inputs inputs the domain part of an email address in upper case, then bit-pay should not accept the invalid domain, instead alerting the user that they are a retard. |

I didn't like that, it becomes easier for a raffle operator to disguise his own fake entries (instead of showing forum user names, etc., which allows us to intuit that every ticket purchase in the list is legitimate). |

The only issue is the "remainder" greater than the max multiple.
10 hex digits = 16^10 = 1099511627776
1099511627776 / 40270 = 27303492.12 (that last 0.12 is unfair)
So max valid random number is 40270 * 27303492 = 1099511622840
Matt a "fix" is simple and fair.
If the value of last 10 digits of the block hash is > 1099511622840 then it is a "no-go" and you use the next block.
Don't worry the odds of that happening are very small. Only 1099511622841 to 1099511627776 are "bad". 4936 unfair numbers out of 1099511627776 or 0.0000004%
I have updated my raffle ticket picker here: http://we.lovebitco.in/raffle.html. It will now alert you if the hash is greater than the last modulo interval with a full number of tickets (however you would describe that). Just so everyone knows they have an absolutely equal chance of winning. Feel free to pore over the javascript source and try to break it or find any type of unfair calculation. As an example, in this raffle (with tickets 0-40269), the highest hash without error is FFFFFFECB7, which gives #40269 as winner; FFFFFFECB8 or higher gives an error. Large hashes near the maximum are also only a problem if 0x10000000000h is not evenly divisible by the number of tickets. For example, with 65536 tickets (0x010000h), a hash of FFFFFFFFFF is still valid. BTW, even with a raffle happening every block, this would likely never happen in your lifetime... |

The first 4936 tickets have 27,303,493 chances to win. The rest of the tickets have 27,303,492. Very small but a slight bias towards the earlier tickets. To be even the max valid random number is 40270 * 27303492 - 1 = 1099511622839. Just exclude numbers larger than that.
All I have to say to this..0xFFFFFFFFFF you... (thought someone could make a math joke in the thread that wasn't also a math fail...) The official block to determine the winning ticket number will be 171,450.

You are about right. The modulo (%) is what I proposed (page 3). I gave Matthew and others who may do raffles the tools so they could prove their raffle is being run fairly for anybody that may question how the winner is picked. For some technical information: Each bitcoin block has a SHA256(SHA256()) hash that is the main "block hash", a hash of the contents of the block (even more technically, a hash of the merkle tree of the transactions in the block). Like the SHA256 hashes of the emails you submitted to the raffle, hashing the transaction block turns readable data into unpredictable random-looking output (it is unpredictable by design; if you could predict it's output, you could break Bitcoin and crack hashed passwords easily). This is actually the puzzle that mining uses; since the output of SHA256 is unpredictable, it is very hard to find a hash that looks like something you specify. Bitcoin's mining challenge is to find a block hash that starts with many zeroes, the more zeroes we want at the beginning of a 256-bit hash (the smaller the value), the more difficult it becomes to find one. This hash of a block is our random number picker. We specify a future block, so we know the fix is not in - we want to know that a lottery operator isn't picking the ticket number of a friend of his. Since it is so hard to even find a block hash (it's worth 50BTC), trying to manipulate the blockchain so a hash of a particular block is a particular number is nigh impossible. Since it is in the future, nobody without a time machine could have known the winner. Since the blockchain is published for all to use and see, we know that there is only one answer. We could use the whole block hash, but that's a biiiig number and would break your calculator and programming environment, so it is not practical for everybody to use and independently verify. I proposed the last 10 digits as more reasonable - that is still a huge random number (in hexadecimal) with a value that will be between 0 and 1,099,511,627,775. I think one million million is a pretty big number. For those that understand the modulo function, you see we must specify that the first raffle ticket number in our list is #0. We use the modulo function on the hash of a specific future block (that the organizer designates beforehand) to determine the winner: (last-10-digits-of-block-hash) % (number-of-tickets) = winning ticket number (I'll let you google modulo function if you don't know what that is.) By all entrants seeing the list of ticket numbers beforehand, and being able to see how the winning ticket number is picked, it is hard to say that the winner was chosen unfairly. Scammers have to go back to simply not shipping the prize and disappearing. Someone like bitpay may fill this final need, by acting as an escrow agent for prizes for future raffles. |

Nobody has the correct answer, which is to start your own pool.
Pools with no hashrate have a hard time launching. If you start a pool with 200GHash/s on day one, you are golden. Then the transactions fees, mining fees, and donations you earn are just gravy. Why pay fees when you can earn fees!

I appreciate the effort by the person who made the list but personally I think it would be unacceptable for anyone to produce a list other than the OP (Matt)
Not that I think anyone would cheat but it surely is not a good idea for a contestant in this raffle to compile the list that is used to determine the winner.
It's pretty easy to look at the ticket number ranges vs credits and see I did the math right (or discover I did it wrong...). With the error I discovered, Matthew will need to create a new list which will have a different number of total credits - he can turn the credits in to ticket numbers like my example. If the referral calculation was done in error by the way the bitpay was set up and Matthew only got the results from them, it may take a bit of time to fix. |

I see an error that will require republication of a corrected list by MNW. As alluded to above, BTC amounts are in the list, not ticket amounts (BTC x2). However referrals were likely paid as though tickets=BTC, causing referrals to pay double. Since the list of "credits" is BTC amounts (not "tickets"), the list of credits should have had one more digit of accuracy, with amounts like 0.525 - Provide your e-mail address to a referral
- When they purchase their raffle credits, they will receive an additional 5% credit for each credit they purchase.
- You will receive an additional 25% credit for each credit purchased through the referral.
Referral example:
You purchase 1 credit. You now have 1 raffle credit.
Friend 1 purchases 1 credit through your referral e-mail.
You now have 1.25 raffle credits. Friend 1 now has 1.05 raffle credits.
So with BTC as the amounts, it would have needed three-digit accuracy if done right: -When you don't use a referral, your 0.5 BTC became 0.5 credits (confirmed from my entry), -when you use a referral, your 0.5 BTC becomes 0.525 credits (a bonus of 5%, 0.025 credits). -when you receive a referral, you receive .125 credits. It looks like the "referral" program gave twice the percentage it should have, since everything in the list is in increments of 0.05.

Those numbers are in BTC, not tickets. So, how hard and complicated can we make it to figure out a single secure and fair random number between 0 and 20644? So, why did someone suddenly want so many bitcoins all at once? I know the super bulls will say it's a savvy investor getting as many ridiculously cheap bitcoins as possible before they go to the moon, but I'm genuinely curious as to why someone would put in one large buy instead of spreading it out over weeks and buying even cheaper.
Maybe they just wanted X amount in a hurry and bought, so we have a rally, just like when someone sells Y in a hurry and dumps the market, and we have teeth gnashing about a manipulator in our midst.
If they bought slowly, they might start a bigger rally and have to pay more to get their 50k BTC. |
