I would start by giving just a bit more information, like what video card you are trying to run and what driver do you have installed, which "miner" are you trying to run in guiminer, what pool are you trying to connect to, etc.
It is likely that all the above are kerfuffled and kerplugeoned, I would start by verifying the pool information - miner/worker user password, correct IP/port for mining (not stratum mining), etc.

Not only should you give a guideline of the address/key security you expect from others when they hold funds, you will need to spell out what constitutes a valid message to return money. Consider any or all of theymos is hit by a bus, the forum admin account is hacked, return addresses that were previously given are now compromised, the domain is seized or hacked and transferred, kalyhost is raided, mtgox decides to disappear with their money, etc. Who is the benefactor who can receive back the money; should the treasurers be able to conspire to spend to start a new forum, etc. |

Additional nodes can be specified with the command line or bitcoin.conf option " addnode=10.0.0.1:8333". This is not guaranteed to open a connection, the other Bitcoin nodes still have to like you and be wanting more connections. IP addresses quickly become obsolete, a large number of Bitcoin users are on dynamic IP addresses or don't run Bitcoin full time. You can throw something like this into your bitcoin.conf file if you want to attempt connection to your own list of IP addresses in addition to the peer-finding methodology in Bitcoin, which already works quite well. maxconnections=500

I have run bitcoin-qt for a week, and it is now synchronized through block 219926.
I have three files,
blk0001.dat 2,097,361,271 bytes,
blk0002.dat 2,097,295,438 bytes, and
blk0003.dat 1,249,842,320 bytes.
Are these three files the same for everyone? Or a crisper question might be, are blk001.dat and blk002.dat the same for everyone who is synchronized? Depending on how orphan blocks were received from the network and how data was reorganized on the hard drive, different users will have different checksums of blockchain files, although the contents are essentially the same. The most recent file, blk0003.dat will be changing in size every time a block is received. Data for downloadable blockchain distributions such as in this thread is specially prepared to be an efficient in-order set of blocks and to be verifiable by others. |

Who is the "they"? We use bitcoins, bitcoins are money. Once it is Bitcoins it does not need to be converted (back) to dollars. You can buy company shares in Bitcoins, earn dividends in Bitcoins, and buy socks for your nocturnal emissions while listening to your own voice in Bitcoins. For now, I still have 0.8 Bitcoin in my account, worth about $13 — assuming that it's not raided by the feds. There is no "account". Perhaps that money can be spent on buying a clue. He bet 0.02 and won 0.02244397. That's a bet on lessthan 56000. You can. http://statifier.sourceforge.net/For all the libraries it would take, it would make a huge binary for Bitcoin. I got that openSUSE distro, and bitcoin d runs just fine. The problem is the platform's old QT 4.5.3 even after full updates. Qt is forward-compatible, meaning applications will generally continue working on new platforms, but new apps might not work on old libraries or compile in old Qt. If you absolutely must have bitcoin-qt running, I would suggest getting and compiling qt 4.8.4, and setting the path to the new built libraries. May I ask how can I "consolidate some outputs"?
By sending yourself some transactions. For example if a bitcoin address has 100 0.001 BTC outputs you could send yourself one 0.1 BTC transaction to combine the 100 outputs into one. The problem is it may end up costing more in transaction fees than the inputs are worth. What you could add is an option to purge and ignore 1 satoshi inputs. The gamblers may have thousands of those, and just tossing .00001000 BTC in the bin would be easier than trying to get them out of a wallet. Even smarter would be to include as much dust input in transactions as would be allowed for same fee, starting from the smallest amounts, but you'd have to talk to Bitcoin, simulating several transactions, to optimize fee-finding. |

So is it a security feature primarily? I was wondering if it might be doing a 'rescan', looking through recent blocks for transactions which aren't in the wallet.dat, but I did a test that seems to suggest rescan is no longer needed. I sent coins from one wallet to another, waited for the transaction to get 2 confirmations, closed bitcoin-qt, switched the wallet.dat out and replaced it with the recipient wallet, restarted bitcoin-qt with -checkblocks=1 and the transaction showed up in the recipient wallet immediately. Is that a feature of the new leveldb stuff? The wallet contains a value called "bestblock", which contains the last block seen when the wallet was last used. When starting with an older wallet than blockchain, Bitcoin knows that it needs to look for any wallet transactions after that block height. Since Bitcoin may previously have crashed or been terminated unceremoniously while it was writing to the blockchain, the startup check ensures that data is in a reasonable state. The default level should really be bumped up to 2: -checklevel specifies how thorough the verification must be:
0: only check whether the block exists on disk
1: verify block validity (default)
2: verify transaction index validity
3: check transaction hashes
4: check whether spent txouts were spent within the main chain
5: check whether all prevouts are marked spent
6: check whether spent txouts were spent by a valid transaction that consume them Code is self-documenting. |

For the most part, this is brilliant (no I'm not about to pay 50BTC though). .... I was offering my "services" tongue in cheek, if you didn't catch that - I've made no great effort to establish a reputation or reveal my identity to more than members I've bought stuff from. A company like MtGox would be a likely root CA issuer - they've got your ID and bank info already, so they have already verified "trust" for many bitcoiners, and scammers might be put off going through MtGox and paying money to get a counterfeit look-alike alias. You or any other person could offer such service though, in the spirit of "decentralized". With a "signed alias", one could simply use their own main identity to self-register other addresses (like auto-sign pregenerated one-time pay addresses), or you could "vouch" for others by signing their address and require real verification or only verifying that they've proved to you it's their address. As an issuer, you can scan for and reject any name that might be confused for an already-issued trust. A fully implemented client could not only look up the name when you put in an address, but let you "view certificate" to see who issued the trust. Like you say, charge $50 and do some checks, and your issued certificates are more trustworthy. The work would be putting it in Bitcoin; you'd have to make a bastard-child client that accessed both blockchains (main client, very low chance of that happening), or get a BIP through that added the namecoin-like registration to Bitcoin (devs have already said Bitcoin isn't for data). That's the part that's worth 50BTC. |
