1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] GiveCoin - [X11 Darkcoin descendant-KGW] CHARITY THROUGH CRYPTOGRAPHY on: May 20, 2014, 07:11:53 PM
Hey all,

For those of you who've stayed on the Givecoin rollercoaster these past few weeks, I want to apologize on our behalf for the lack of communication with the issues with the blockchain and the developments we've been making. Frankly, Dan and I have had a hell of a past few weeks dealing with end of semester commitments and exams at university, and getting by was our main priority. In lieu of that, we mistakenly decided to employ a backseat developer to fix the initial issues that cropped up, without much scrutiny or putting in the time to communicate and stay up to date with him or with you folks. Now that we're in the clear, I want to stress that our time and efforts are aimed toward making this happen in the long run...

Dan has made some small changes that reflect your complaints and criticisms, however these will NOT affect the overall stability of the blockchain. Any future changes that we make that will result in a hard fork will be immediately communicated by us, and for the time being we will be holding off on a PoW/PoS hard fork to let things level out.

In this interim, we've made some awesome strides partnering up with www.doabitofgood.com, a screensaver platform which mines for cryptocurrencies which can in turn be donated to various organizations and non-profits. Additionally, GIVE is the default coinbase for the program, something we're really excited for that will definitely provide a boost to the current state of affairs. Arranging the system with the guys at DABOG to be compatible with GIVE has been our primary goal in the past month or so, and I'm happy to say we're ready to go.

I've arranged a premium tier dual-PR blast between us and DABOG with PR.com, hitting all the major newswires within the next few hours today, which should certainly help us tap into a more mainstream audience outside of the mining community. For those still on board, we really encourage you to try out DABOG, retweet, like on FB (now fb.com/givecoincryptocurrency), or join the subreddit: we want to show some genuine support for those who might be joining us in the weeks to come.

Dan will be chiming in soon to add in his comments and field any questions you guys might have, as always your suggestions are welcome. In the meantime, look out for Givecoin on the newswire!

Viva la Givecoin Smiley

I think the publicity is not in place, and the price is too low, mainly due to the impact of this currency

Well, we certainly want to hear from the community and set this up to be as positively impactful as we can. We've been reaching out to dozens and dozens of different charities, trying to get feedback and build up some partnerships; if only to spread the name. Is there anything specific you have in mind that you feel we should be mindful of or try? I'm always open to sharing ideas with the team, I just want to hear them!
this coin is about donations so i would suggest miners to actually DONATE. this is why i asked for a total(s) display of donated gives. want to see if miners are actually donating. think of donating as free advertisment. ppl within the charties will talk about givecoin if a good amount has been collected. so instead of putting up sell orders under 200 sats. donate and hold. day 3 and miners are complaining already ffs.

also i would suggest showing the charities on as the homepage for the website and having mining on a seperate tab. this coin is about donating first not mining.

edit*
and if pools operators could choose one charity of their choice and the 1% donation that is donated to the pool will go to the charity of their choice. more if not all miners will donate then. a page showing the charity of choice and links to showing the donations made to the charity. this would be good for the coin something different.

I like the suggestions, thanks for the ideas. We're looking into switching charities and their wallet balances to the first page ASAP...you're right that with something called Givecoin, people are going to want to see direct results of what we're trying to do without having to navigate through the site.
PoW/PoS is also definitely an option on the table...we've all been particularly busy with various personal obligations, but by the end of the work week we'll have sorted out if that's feasible to make happen time-wise before others start popping up.

Maintaining active communication/interest with nat'l/internat'l non-profits has been somewhat of an uphill battle, as I'm mostly getting an "uhh..sounds like a good idea...let me get back to you on that once I talk to the higher-ups *click*" response. That being said, starting with the smaller guys, we're seeing a lot more support. The ball is rolling after four days of launching and there's certainly interest out there for this social contract type application of crypto (especially for charities). On my end, it's a lot of working to their business cycle...decisions like accepting a new, unfamiliar payment method aren't nearly a chief concern AND don't happen overnight with the majority of organizations. Luckily we've had some very forward-thinking and fast-acting non-profits help support our initiative from square 1...hint

Finally, it's been said plenty of times around here, but please consider donating toward these charities with your mined coins or spreading the word to friends and organizations via social media...not just on bitcointalk. Long term wide adoption is only going to happen if the community is supporting these early adopters who're going out on a limb experimenting with this stuff...let's show them it's worthwhile.

thanks for the suggestions and constructive criticism, keep it comin!

You folks looking for a new X11 with some potential should check what we've got going on over at givecoin.info, the announcement thread is here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=529181.0 for those interested. Since our launch yesterday, we've gotten a *few charities on board accepting GIVE and receiving early adopter donations and will eventually plan to move to a voting module for shares of our premine. We're always looking for constructive criticism, new ideas, and leads for charities who see the benefits of what cryptocurrencies have to offer  Smiley

4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Charity Announcements! on: April 11, 2014, 09:14:39 PM
Hey everyone Smiley,

My name's Mike, I'm part of the development team working on Givecoin, specifically in charge of reaching out to charities about cryptocurrencies, getting them on board with GIVE, amongst other. I figured now would be a great time to introduce myself, in hand with some great news:

We've just confirmed partnerships with two nonprofit organizations who've accepted our donations and are looking forward to see what the community has to offer.

Spare Key Foundation
www.sparekey.org
7CQ9wz9WUzrPgV9JFsBxjB2JPHgjrKN2J5

Providing financial relief and assistance in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota for families in need. Ahead of the game for charities worldwide, already accepting a range of cryptocurrencies to date. Erich and I have spoken over the phone several times, he's very enthusiastic toward the technology and the potential it might have toward charity organizations.

To make the best use of the news cycle, they're deferring an official press release until Monday, but are ready to take donations. Roerick, their cryptocurrency development director, will be posting in this thread shortly to appease the skeptics, and I'm sure will be interested in any questions or suggestions.

Blood Banker
www.bloodbanker.org
76DAU2No5gDZgULCAACZKmWWSpWgiZvHzh

A 501(3)c organization that provides supply and insurance for blood banks, aiming to advocate the importance of blood and plasma donation and to use technology to connect donors to those in need. Phil is also in the process of updating the site with their wallet address, but has received his bounty and is also ready to accept donations. He's just posted the official announcement via tweet @ twitter.com/blooddonation.

...So guys, tweet, retweet, keep on mining, tell your grandma! These are two of many more to come in the upcoming weeks, and we're excited to be on the verge of having something really going on with Givecoin. Please consider donating some fresh coin in their direction, in the spirit of what we're trying to do here. Your constructive criticism and suggestions are valuable to making GIVE as strong as possible, so keep them coming! It was a delayed and bumpy start, but now that everything's running, our full effort and energy are going towards making this happen in the long run.
