Your site's currency conversion code is very friendly to canadians.

This thread is reserved for the asking and answering of questions.  Would you like to edit your post into a question, cartwright?  Otherwise I will split this thread so that you can continue your comments and discussions.

ChaosFox, feel free to send me your bitcoin address when you send me the vector file.  Or if you prefer, I can use the address in your signature.

Calling people names and copping a "damn the man; I know better than everyone" attitude isn't helping your cause, guys.

We (MMS) are a very diverse group of people with very diverse interests and very diverse worldviews.

We're open to the idea.  Just please try to explain how Bitcoin would benefit our group if we accepted it for donations.  Don't act like anarchists and know-it-alls.

Honestly, this guy could be speaking for the whole internets.  Leave your agenda at the door and provide a clear, useful answer; and people will love BitCoin!
165  Other / Obsolete (buying) / Re: Draw a picture; earn 10 BTC on: May 11, 2011, 06:23:00 AM
Well, it's 6:13 so I'm gonna call this one.  It was really tough, but I've decided to go for ChaosFox in first place, with joeydangerous as runner-up.  joeydangerous' artwork was amazing, but ChaosFox nailed the police lineup look I was going for.  Both will be eligible for "mysterious potential" and I'm going to also send joeydangerous a bitcoin because that ninja mouse just rocks!  Free software like inkscape, by the way, is also a definite 'in' for my good books.

Stay tuned for the rest of the story, because if it works out I'll be doing more projects like this again.  Great job everyone, and a huge thanks to all who participated!

I'm loving the pink, Tori!  Definitely adds depth to the piece.

@Garrett with entries flowing in this fast I think that might be too long.  I don't want too many people to feel disappointed!  What's her user nick though?

This is now the official comment thread for the New to BitCoin? Start here! sticky.
169  Other / Obsolete (buying) / Re: Draw a picture; earn 10 BTC on: May 11, 2011, 01:59:00 AM
Very nice, joeydangerous.  I think I will have to extend the "mysterious potential" part to at least one runner up, no matter which one I pick!

Yes, explaining bitcoin as a PROTOCOL is very effective and the truth in the plainest sense.

A set of rules laid down that people are free to choose to adhere to or not as they wish. I think this is key to getting people to see the difference between the grass-roots capitalism of bitcoin and the discredited trickle-down capitalism of central bank fiat currency.

It is not really a project but multitude of projects aimed at adhering to the protocol.

This really is the way we need to start thinking and talking about it.
172  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Gold Standard comparison is invalid on: May 11, 2011, 12:12:02 AM
Napster was a centralized service, so you can't really compare it with Bitcoin.
Once the Bitcoin started it's impossible to take the plug off by suing one company.
You're interpreting the metaphor too broadly.

Hey, non-original is perfectly fine with me--although attribution is nice so I do prefer it.  This has been an incredible response!  I love all your pictures:  great efforts everyone!!

So far I like ChaosFox's drawing the best; purplezky's interpretation has the mouse looking like the sinister one; and shooter_mcgavin's cat is way too cuddly for what I need.  Plus, vectors kick butt.  But I'm very impressed with shooter_mcgavin's photography skills--it's hard to photograph line drawings!

One thing I forgot to do is give out a deadline.  Hopefully this won't thwart anyone already working on a drawing, but shall we say 6 am UTC?  I'm open to changing it if it's a problem.

Edit:  Oops, hadn't checked my pm's yet.  joeydangerous sent in a pretty sweet one, too.  The game's afoot!!
174  Other / Obsolete (buying) / Draw a picture; earn 10 BTC on: May 10, 2011, 08:15:33 PM
The rules are simple:  I want a picture that meets the following criteria.  If multiple pictures are submitted, I will choose the best one.  If no pictures meet my (fairly low) standards, no money will be awarded.  Draw-er of the best accepted picture gets 10 BTC and the mysterious potential for more.

Criteria
  • Drawing should be black and white, either digitally composed or a high-quality scan.  Using xkcd for reference on this point will give you the general idea.
  • Drawing should depict a large cat (Felis Catus) facing the viewer, and a small mouse dressed as a ninja also facing the viewer.  Cat may optionally be eyeing the ninja mouse out of the corner of its eye, or licking its lips, but the basic look is to be police lineup style.
  • Drawing should be a simple line drawing with no background elements.  Excessive detail is undesirable.
  • edit: Deadline for entries is 6am UTC.

That's it.  Go!

176  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Pros and cons of using new Bitcoin addresses for each transaction? on: May 10, 2011, 07:51:56 PM
Could this topic be folded into the list at the end of the Introduction to BitCoin?  If so, can someone provide a good summary of the important things it contains?  I think for usability's sake having as few stickied topics as possible is desirable.

Is anything missed by linking to it via the question:

"What are the pros and cons of using new bitcoin addresses for each transaction?"

177  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Discussion re: "Is BitCoin a Ponzi or pyramid scheme? (Newbie-Friendly)" on: May 10, 2011, 07:08:41 PM
This is a newbie question and answer thread, not an opinion and commentary thread.  If you want to discuss this topic, start your own thread.  Will a mod please move/delete these posts?  Guidelines for posting were clearly labelled in the OP.

Suggestions for modification of the OP are also welcome, but they need to occur in another thread:  preferably on meta if they are serious considerations and/or analysis.

Edit:  Split this into its own discussion.  Carry on, all!
178  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bounty for translations of the Bitcoin article in Wikipedia [upto 23 BTC] on: May 10, 2011, 06:21:41 PM
Appreciate it, cw!  I will be starting a new thread so that I can update the OP.  Before I do, can we get a conclusive list on as-yet-unpaid bounties?

I see:
Finnish by Topi,
Italian by Dusty,
Bulgarian by Smothier,
Norwegian by carlerha/Calle
and an offer by jcbrand to do Afrikaans.

How many of these have been reviewed by a native speaker?  I can review for structure/appearance but don't speak these five languages.

Also, I would like to give someone else access to the account in addition to myself--in case I were to be hit by a bus, etc.  Theymos is tied for second-highest donor but also has a lot on his plate.  da2ce7, are you interested?

To clarify, for those of you who don't know how the "Area 51" site works:

a question doesn't count towards the needed limit until it receives at least 20 on- or off- topic votes.  So don't just add questions unless you have a really good one--look through and vote up the ones that will best define the boundaries of what the site should be.

You don't have to be a true believer to be involved with Bitcoin.  You just have to be willing to take a risk.

Cryptocurrency is clearly the way of the future, but right now we don't know if BitCoin will be BitTorrent or Napster.  The difference between the two is a lot of old-fashioned hard work that has to be put in to make BitCoin usable, practical, relevant, and successful.  Putting your nose to the grindstone on these issues is much more worthwhile than arguing with people who will eventually be proven either wrong or right.
