Monero in the news again. Seems to be increasingly chosen over Bitcoin for this kind of thing.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-43025788
"Hackers hijack government websites to mine crypto-cash"

Quote
Security researcher Scott Helme said more than 4,000 websites, including many government ones, were affected.

The cryptocurrency involved was Monero - a rival to Bitcoin that is designed to make transactions in it "untraceable" back to the senders and recipients involved.

The plug-in had been tampered with to add a program, Coinhive, which "mines" for Monero by running processor-intensive calculations on visitors' computers.

Once the plug-in was infected, it affected thousands of other websites in addition to the ICO's, which used it.

For those of you who have rejected Kraken due to the poor interface/trading engine, I thought I'd pop by to mention that the new engine is working way way better than the old one. Trades and withdrawals going through first time is a nice change. Check it out (KYC required).

Has anyone been able to cash out of Monero?

I am having a truly Kafkaesque exerience. I'm tier 4 verified on Kraken, but have been unable to withdraw any funds to my bank account. No explanation so far. My bank account details are all correctly entered.

I gave my church a substantial amount of Monero. They spent 3 months getting verified on Kraken but have also been unable to withdraw any funds. They were told that the wire transfer process has to be separately verified. They are trying to jump through all the hoops but I am beginning to lose hope.

Similar problems on Coinbase. I have tried selling Bitcoin on Coinbase but the transaction has been rejected because I am "over the weekly limit", which I'm clearly not. This used to work.

And I'm having the same problems on goldmoney.com. Not a cryptocurrency but again transfer out is not working for nonsensical reasons.

I'm starting to wonder whether the whole cryptocurrency world, if not the entire financial world, is fake. What does the Monero price matter if there's no real world liquidity?

Anyone else having similar problems?

Hi. I use Kraken (level 3 verified), and have moved significant USD out this month. They don't allow withdrawals via services like transferwise, which was frustrating. However, there should be no problem as long as the account you are moving the funds to accepts SWIFT payments and is registered in the same name as your Kraken account.

Nice price bounce today btw. :-)

Can I still be in the old-timer's club? LOL

2014 only, sorry.  Cool

Monero Fish species:

0.)  Leviathan                      (100 000+ XMR)
1.)  Whale                             (40 000+ XMR)
2.)  Pocketwhale                    (20 000+ XMR)
3.)  Dolphin                           (10 000+ XMR)
4.)  Shark                               (5 000+ XMR)
5.)  Black Marlin                      (2 000+ XMR)
6.)  Tuna                                 (1000+ XMR)

8.)  Gadidae                              (100+ XMR)
9.)  Atlantic mackerel                   (30+ XMR)
10.) Herring                                (10+ XMR)
11.) Goldfish                                 (1+ XMR)

I always maintained a simple definition: >10k = Dolphin. >100k = Whale. All arbitrary really. Anyway, I don't have > 50k any more. Tongue

Come on out old time crew. Quicken is fishing.

LOL I guess maybe I count as "old time crew" even though I was never very 'involved' in XMR much beyond just buying some early on and always planning to HODL as long as necessary...

My first posts on bitcointalk were actually in a MaidSafe thread (I still HODL all my MAID from their crowdsale too) but looking back at post history it seems my first Monero-related thread post was Mid-August 2013: what was XMR price around then?  I believe my initial basis-price for the first few Moneroj I socked away was something like $0.70 cents?  Although it's probably much higher now (probably 10X higher, over $7 by now, I'd guess) as I've added more as XMR has become more successful and stronger... kind of a reverse-dollar-cost-average I guess LOL but at least overall current price is higher than my unit cost by now Cheesy

Anyway, initial buy-in under a buck counts as old-school doesn't it?  Who here has the absolute *lowest* first-buy basis price??

Nice time machine! Those with the lowest first buy price were not the early 2014 Polo buyers, but pre-polo buyers may have got some cheaper than they ever were on exchanges in 2014-2015. My first post here was the day I registered, June 05, 2014, on the Monero announcement thread naturally. Started out mining, but quickly decided I could only get a significant quantity by buying...

I am not currently a member of an exchange, but have started mining Monero and I'm keen to invest some fiat savings (GBP) too. Ideally, I'd buy from somewhere like coin-hub.co.uk but they don't sell Monero yet (I have sent a request). Can anyone suggest the easiest way to exchange GBP for XMR? Any help appreciated.

I joined the fun in 2015.
It's also the same year I registered in this forum.

Not that much in my bag, though I plan to retire when XMR reach $1000++.  Cool

Very good timing in hindsight. I expect many will be in position to retire when we reach $1000++  Smiley

I'm in from somewhere beginning of 2015, i am cheering but not yet celebrating. Party starts when we reach 100 USD. Don't think we will see it anytime soon yet.

I am confident it will get there. A lot probably depends on bitcoin short term, but a big Monero adoption story could see $100 overnight. MHODL

I'm from way back too. I used to write the whirlwind missives summary at one point, its since moved on to the dev meetings.

Held from early on brought coins before they went down far enough. Smiley

Yup. The pain of 2015 prices for the summer 2014 adopters.  Cry Grin

I started buying the same time as you but I have a problem, I only like to see my Monero balance go UP.

I hear that. Exactly my approach through 2014 and 2015. I'm trying this new thing called balance now. Still over 50 percent of wealth in monero, but not 95!

Any other old timers from 2014 celebrating?

Full disclosure, I've never owned LTC, and except for a few Aeon I mined, XMR is the only coin I hold. I don't even hold BTC anymore. I've been a (happy) XMR bag holder for 3 years now  Smiley

Likewise (apart from the Aeon). Real Mustangs don't day trade.

I have made sales in 2016 and 2017, but the bag is still pretty heavy. Latest sale (first in a year) went through in the last 36 hours at my target price point of 52 USD. What a day - Drank Champagne last night in celebration and I'm still smiling. That's me done for a while. Next tentative sale point  - 150 USD.  Cool

Q

Quicken, I remember you from the ole trollbox (may it RIP).

I'm still accumulating but doesn't look like I'll ever hit that dolphin status man. I'm out of BTC and at $55 USD per coin, XMR its getting hard / expensive to accumulate.  Cry

P.S. You should do us less fish a favour by distributing more of your stack  Wink

Likewise antw081. Ah yes, the good ole days. Let's see, my first purchase was the sub 0.002 dip in early June 2014. It went ballistic up to 0.01 in 2 weeks after that, and then crashed back down before I'd decided to sell any. NOT a trader (though I did manage that sneaky 1:3 Boolberry trade). Then there was the memorable 'defend 0.004' campaign in July 2014 after the brief spike to 0.01. That didn't last long, LOL. Then two long, long years of grind. I was underwater but kept buying to improve my average buy price. Put in over half my life savings, which worked out eventually (phew). Called myself a Dolphin because I never reached six figures of XMR (damn those 2014 prices! ;-)).

Sold (in hindsight) an annoyingly large chuck of the stack on the up slope of late August 2016. Break even followed very quickly by healthy gain. Sigh of relief.

Cashed out over 15k yesterday (is that not enough?!) but still keeping a healthy five figures for the long haul.  Grin

Look at it from our perspective. You freely admit to trolling, and thereby destroying, a Monero-Class star-freighter. A rather expensive piece of hardware...

Forty-two million in adjusted dollars. That's minus payload, of course.

The internet corroborates some elements of your account. That the Nostromo set down on LV-426, an unsurveyed planet, at that time. That announcements were trailed on twitter. That it resumed its course and was subsequently trolled for self-destruct. By you. For reasons unknown.

Kraken has $200000 / month afaik.

Thanks OrangeP. Have you used Kraken?

Hi all,
Great to see another ATH. I'm not looking to sell right now, but I am looking for information/advice on direct XMR to fiat conversion for large sums.

It seems that services include Kraken, Bitfinex, and maybe Bitsquare.

Does anyone have any experience using these services? KYC issues? Withdrawal limits? Security? Privacy?
Best, Q

No Bitfinex they have closed fiat withdrawals for some time now. Best is Kraken, but ofcourse you will have no anonimity there.

Thanks Febo. I don't need anonymity for this. You don't get that through the Poloniex -> Circle/Uphold route anyway, and I'm paying the Capital Gains Tax due.

It would be nice if Kraken would produce more fiat trading pairs than the current XMR/EUR and XMR/USD, but it's possible to manage that with an international currency account.

I don't see withdrawal limits on the Kraken faq, or anywhere else I looked on the website. When one wants to move six figures of name-your-currency it becomes a big issue. Anyone able to provide this info?
Cheers, Q

You guys are reading too much into this.

For the newer guys, nutildah (aka MonkeyChanger in Polo trollbox) has been consistently hating on Monero in BCT and trollbox for nearly 3 years now. As far as I can tell, its been hate at first sight.

nutildah likes to pop into the Monero thread every now and then (in-between his tirades against XYZ) to reaffirm his hatred of Monero. Its just par for the course. Normal.

Just ignore and don't quote.

Yep, that user has been on my ignore list for a looong time.

On price speculation, I was convinced the next big leg up for XMR would take us to 0.04, but these recent moves in LTC, Ripple, etc. make me think it could well be both higher and more sudden. I'm not prepared to leave a big stack in Polo though.

When we can expect some nice news and see 0.02?

It has been three years and bitcoin still has not taken out the last ATH on Stamp. It took Monero 27 months to best the first ATH. If Monero takes out 0.0265 in less than a year consider it a gift but I would not bet on it. Probably next year.

The #3 market cap should bring long overdue attention, and Monero >0.04 is on the card this year IMHO.

I look forward to another group of short-sighted shorters being burnt in the next big move.

#happymonerodolphin :-)

Price will not go to 0.04 or 0.03 ... maybe 0.02x

Why?

NO GUI! No one will use it. Ordinary people dont understand and dont want a DOS Console.

Question is, when the GUI, RingCT and Kovri are out, will you be on the train?
