642  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 28, 2011, 04:22:13 AM
Posted about Solidcoin on funkykit.com, PM'd CoinHunter about it, received replies, have not received bounty.
Also posted about them and began accepting them on my business page (epic-hw.com, we're new but have already sold some fan controllers), haven't heard back on that end or received bounty.

What's up CoinHunter?
I'd love to see Solidcoin succeed, but not paying bounties isn't going to help much.

Didn't I reply to your PM? I believe I asked you for some more details about your vendor bounty claim.
643  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 28, 2011, 01:59:06 AM
Even if another blockchain does overtake Bitcoin, SolidCoin won't be the one to do it.  To be successful, the challenger would need to make significant protocol-level improvements, and even that might not be enough.  CoinHunter hasn't done this.  Protocol-wise, all he's done is changed a few constants; nothing more complex than what the creator of Ixcoin did.

Haha, could you post some more FUD? SolidCoin is nothing like Ixcoin, which changed (besides name changes) maybe ~50 lines of code. Ixcoin has now copied some aspects of SolidCoin's changes.

SolidCoin on the other hand has added code to the base to extend the API, fixed about 40-50 bugs, streamlined areas of the UI, implemented a much smarter network algorithm and processes blocks much faster. All within a week. If you're going to try to troll something at least get your information right and attack it justly.

For instance if I was going to attack SolidCoin I would say it's still got a lot of buggy and not so buggy Bitcoin code in it. I'm trying to change that. The difference is I've been writing apps from the ground up and releasing them online for almost 15 years, the people with my experience rarely, if ever, work for free on projects like SolidCoin. You know why? We're out enjoying money and other things in life instead of innovating. I want to innovate with this because I want to be an end user of a viable online currency, not one that is broken like btc.

Thanks, looks interesting.

and it appears by the network graphs that more and more miners are long SolidCoins.

Hopefully not too many too quickly, otherwise the entire BTC network will crash and SC will get the blame... Smiley

***

Bounties page has been updated with 40 new promotion bounties. The other ones are all used up now (3 still being confirmed but they are taken).

http://solidcoin.info/bounties.php

The new bounty is "First 40 to post about the "5 reasons to switch to SolidCoin" article on their blog/forum/twitter*" , value 25 SC .

... Shame, a porn star runnin around the bitcoin forums would spice things up a bit. I'm assuming lorna isn't lorna, but I could be wrong there too.

I wanted to formally ask CoinHunter to add solidcoin.info to my http://payco.in directory. I took the opportunity to prove I'm me at the same time.

Shame the video from the mobile phone is so rubbish ... I won't be doing that again.

No I thought you looked good in it for what it's worth. Smiley Just the audio a little out of sync.

I've added that site to http://solidcoin.info/market.php .

CoinHunter, as you know, it is not true that everyone all over the world can reach dropbox. I am so sorry that I can't download SolidCoin 1.02 and the source. Could you please find some other places to upload?

All files have now been transferred to the server instead of dropbox. Hopefully you can download them now?

648  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 27, 2011, 04:20:47 AM
I've updated the site with more bounties paid and new businesses which accept SolidCoins.

Also new page to help people learn more about SolidCoin. More coming soon.

Good job with all the updates  Smiley

1 Question : how do I mine SolidCoins? I have GUIminer and an account with a pool but can't connect the dots  Undecided

Thanks!

I'll post some articles on this on the site soon, I get asked this a lot. But basically you create an account (or use your SC address) as the details.

In GUIMIner you need to go to "other" as the pool, and make sure the port and address is correct as well.
652  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: SLC passes NMC on: August 26, 2011, 02:53:18 PM
Could not, even if I want, the 3 letter code is a standard for exchanges. I don't know where coinHunter came up with his 2 letter code idea, but would crash most of forex programs made to split currency pairs (EURUSD, AUDCAD, GBPYEN.... etc), if solidcoin ever make that far.

Well I can tell you what most people are using, by not using the standard you create the possibility to confuse. Either way it's just a small thing, perhaps forex will give SolidCoin an exemption?
653  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / SolidCoin 1.02 Released on: August 26, 2011, 02:46:19 PM
SolidCoin is a peer-to-peer crypto currency based off Bitcoin, with the aim of providing a superior alternative when it comes to network stability, speed of transactions and security. Our aim is also to provide better tools to help businesses and users around the world embrace the SolidCoin currency with much less pain and security troubles compared to Bitcoin.

Download SolidCoin 1.02 Here

Currently only Windows binaries and Source Code are provided as we work through some build issues on Linux and MacOSX. Source will also be provided on github in a few hours. Keep an eye on the thread for updates.

Quote
-Fixed crash on exit bug
-Fixed some more user interface bugs dealing with sizes set by magic numbers instead of proper sizing
-Updated About box
-Changed some Mac compiler settings
-Updated irc rules to use more channels now that a few thousand users have joined the network
-Updated all docs and build instructions due to libpng support needing to be in wxwidgets on linux
-Changed build process. Now there is a builds folder which contains the makefiles. moved obj creation to a non src directory.
-Moved media out of src directory to keep it clean
-Changed default rpc port to 8555 so it doesn't conflict with some linux services

Why the negativity on an enterprising merchant who is actually using these cryptographic currencies?
Low entry-barrier is one of the key advantages of a system like bitcoin.

We should be encouraging services like this. Good on you Lorna.

Agreed, I'm not sure what this useless "jumping to conclusions" crap is about, but too many people do it. How about we give people the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise? Smiley

Solidcoin passes Namecoin, here's the moment:

Just for future reference, it's not SLC but SC. Smiley

No crashes here...
What operating system are you using?

I am using Windows 7 with all latest updates and protection running in the background. Everything works perfect except for the crashing when I try to close.

This is fixed in next version. Will be out within the hour.

Kill all the keylogger processes? Turn off the keylogger? Really, a keylogger could steal your bank password as well, so turn those things off.

lol I suspect he was just testing his own security :-D  Hoping I guess that somehow a keylogger wouldn't pick up his info.

Oh btw... do keyloggers just catch the keycode or do they catch the character?  The reason I ask is if someone used say one of the DVORAK layouts or that other semi-big one, I know it would be tough to ramp up for just this purpose, but would it be any safer? since as I recall the key codes don't change just the interpretation of them changes.  So a DVORAK typer could have his password key logged, but it would be complete jibberish on the other end unless they used other keyboard layout formats to test against, not that that would be very hard mind you...

Keyloggers catch scancodes and the text as it comes out say (WM_CHAR) . The good ones also log screenshots around the mouse on clicks to catch visual password entering. The best thing to do is make sure your system is clean because once something is on it they are capable of getting anything.

  • Fixed transactions fees instead of unknown variable fees in BTC
I don't see these fees documented anywhere. What are the fees?

Because they are "fixed" in a point of time but they can also be changed, if that makes sense. It's currently fixed to 0.01 (which is less than the equiv in BTC). It's very useful to businesses to know the fee in advance, they can also query the JSON api to get it (sc_getfee) .

The site will be getting an update later today with some more information on this, I do agree with most people keeping fees as low as possible whilst still providing incentive to miners is essential.

  • 3 minute blocks, 32 SolidCoins per block
  • Concentration of Bitcoins into elitist early adopters that have no interest or desire to help Bitcoins be used by "normal" people
Actually, you have it backwards. SolidCoin is going to be very much concentrated into early adapters. Due to the cap on difficulty increases, block are flying out at a rate much faster than 3 minutes. Because of this, SolidCoin is spewing freshly minted coins to early adapters far faster than Bitcoin ever did. It took about a year to generate the first 1.5M Bitcoins. SolidCoins will reach that level in a matter of weeks.

The thing is Bitcoin paved the way for understanding about how this works. Thousands of individuals around the world now own SolidCoins and yet it's not even a week old. This is many times better than Bitcoin which was very concentrated into a few people. Not only this but going on the donations and comments people have been sending me many of these people are very much in the "I love these changes here is some donations to help it succeed" mindset. Whereas early BTC adopters are where? Leaving the source to rot full of bugs (I've fixed about 50 now) and not making it easy for businesses and users to join the network.

for some reason on new client i could not recieve payment so went back to old client and was able to recieve payments again

Windows? There's a small update coming out fixing a few UI issues, there's a crash on exit bug due to wxWidgets .  I've heard of no issues with receiving payments though, do you have a firewall by chance?
well im on win7 payments works on old client but not new client i did 2 different receive payments. 40 minutes apart. then switched back to old client and got the payments right away.

Could just be because you had 0 connections for some reason (firewall blocking new EXE?)

Switching or restarting the client makes it reconnect to the IRC server to look for clients to connect to, so could have been the issue perhaps.
