There have been 15,617,100 bitcoins mined, meaning 0.018289588948355% of bitcoins created have been burned. Approximately 0.0002 are burned for each bitcoin mined. If this rate remains constant, 4,200 bitcoins will have been burned by the time the last bitcoin has been mined.

Bitcoin is now a commodity according to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). On Thursday the organization publicly stated it had settled with a Bitcoin exchange for trading option contracts after an enforcement case against a Bitcoin operator.

"In this order, the CFTC for the first time finds that Bitcoin and other virtual currencies are properly defined as commodities," according to the press release. A decentralized, open-source voting platform called CryptoVoter allows bitcoin holders to vote on bitcoin development issues. The value of each voter’s vote is proportional to how much bitcoin they own, making the system similar to a shareholder referendum.

Introduced by startup Lewes, Del.-based Blockchain Innovation Labs Inc., the CryptoVoter uses the block chain to cast and audit votes. The questions are proposed by bitcoin holders.
After each poll deadline, the system scans wallet balances of addresses associated with the votes and automatically calculates the total for each answer and displays the results.

LedgerX, a New York-based trading platform for bitcoin options, has moved closer to becoming the first regulated exchange and clearinghouse to list and clear bitcoin options for the institutional market.

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has approved LedgerX’s application for a temporary registration as a swap execution facility. LedgerX plans to list and clear fully-collateralized, settled options on bitcoin. The next step for the commission is to review the application for full registration.
