6801  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Average btc transaction as of now: ~$3000.00 on: May 20, 2011, 05:08:30 AM
I changed the description text on /q to be more clear. That was pretty ambiguous.
6802  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Average btc transaction as of now: ~$3000.00 on: May 20, 2011, 05:05:25 AM
That's in bytes, not BTC.
6803  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: The pools are getting far too powerful. on: May 20, 2011, 04:15:59 AM
I don't think it's a big problem. If deepbit ever abused its power, all of its miners would leave.
6804  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: debug.log getting bigger on: May 20, 2011, 02:00:55 AM
Bitcoin will truncate debug.log when you restart it.
6805  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mine for something meaningful? on: May 20, 2011, 01:58:21 AM
I voted "yes" because Bitcoin mining is useful.
6806  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Real names on: May 19, 2011, 07:40:31 PM
I'm so confused now...
6807  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Real names on: May 19, 2011, 07:05:56 PM
What if we just make up realistic names to use as our forum names? For example, I could call myself Jamal Williams even though that is not even close to my real name.

At some point I might want to take credit for my Bitcoin activities, so I don't want to use a fake name. In fact, I would list Bitcoin Block Explorer on my résumé if I was applying for a relevant job this year, since that's the biggest and most public programming project I've ever done.

Using a non-obvious pseudonym might be a good idea for people who want to be anonymous. It adds some apparent credibility, I think.
6808  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Expiring transactions on: May 19, 2011, 06:27:06 PM
I agree. Transactions re-introduced to the memory pool due to a reorg should have boosted priority. Once replacement is enabled again, they should also not be replaceable.
6809  Other / Meta / Re: Please create a Local/Castellano (Spanish) forum on: May 19, 2011, 05:58:19 PM
Added.
6810  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin "limitations" on: May 19, 2011, 05:06:47 PM
1) Someone sends me money. It takes me 10 minutes to see it in my client, and even longer for it to get confirmed, since it has to wait for the next block.

Transactions usually appear instantly.

Quote
2) I cannot see who sent me money, in case I ask multiple persons to send me money to the same address.

Don't do that. You're supposed to create an address per person.

Quote
3) It took me MANY HOURS to download all the blocks.

This will be solved soon.
6811  Other / Meta / Re: Please create a Local/Castellano (Spanish) forum on: May 19, 2011, 05:01:32 PM
Is "Castellano" the most correct term? The thread in "other" is named Español, and that's the word I've always heard.
6812  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Describe Satoshi without pics on: May 19, 2011, 03:46:26 PM
Satoshi is somewhere in the middle of the gender spectrum. Don't limit Satoshi with insignificant little pronouns like the Bible uses.

In English, he/him/etc. are gender-neutral.

used in a generic sense or when the sex of the person is unspecified <he that hath ears to hear, let him hear — Matthew 11:15(Authorized Version)> <one should do the best he can>
6813  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: AT&T "IRC Botnet" Warning on: May 19, 2011, 03:28:48 PM
AT&T U-Verse RGs do use WPA2 by default, so they're not totally clueless about it.
6814  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Guide to non-standard transactions needed on: May 19, 2011, 03:13:14 PM
What's the difference between non-standard and invalid?

Invalid transactions double-spend coins, try to redeem an output in such a way that the script returns false, or are formatted incorrectly. Invalid transactions are always rejected. One invalid transaction in a block chain makes all blocks after and including it invalid.

Non-standard transactions do something that the official client would never do. Usually they have scripts that are different from the two scripts that Bitcoin produces. Non-standard transactions will be accepted if they are seen in a block, though miners using the official code will not put them in blocks they mine or relay them to other miners.

Luke-jr's pool accepts all non-standard transactions if they pay a fee, so non-standard transactions are possible.

Quote
Can arbitrary data be stuffed into a transaction? If not, what are the limitations?

Yes. The transaction can (optionally) still be redeemable after doing this, too. Each script can be 10,000 bytes max, but each transaction can have an unlimited number of scripts. The max size of a block is 1MB, though, so a transaction larger than that cannot possibly be included in a block.

Quote
Need these be "transactions" at all in the sense of involving transfers between bitcoin addresses?

No. An output script sets the conditions under which the BTC contained in that output can be redeemed. A transfer to a Bitcoin address creates a script saying, "If you can sign data for this public key hash (address), you can redeem this output." But there are many different conditions you could set.

Quote
How do I go about creating a non-standard transaction?

You must modify Bitcoin. Stock Bitcoin will never create non-standard transactions.

Quote
What are some (actual or potential) use cases?

You could make a transaction redeemable for a password instead of a public key, or require multiple signatures (useful for escrow transactions).

6815  Other / Meta / Re: Can't change my forum name on: May 19, 2011, 12:04:48 PM
Could you change both? If so, that would be great! Smiley

Done. Hopefully the password reset email reaches you.

I have the same problem.

I'm ok with a password reset.  I can change it afterwards.

What do you want me to change it to?
6816  Other / Meta / Re: Please create a Local/Castellano (Spanish) forum on: May 19, 2011, 01:53:49 AM
I don't see many Spanish posts in the "other" section.
6817  Other / Meta / Re: annoying graphical ads in signatures on: May 19, 2011, 01:49:40 AM
You can disable the display of signatures in your profile.
6818  Other / Meta / Re: Forum criticisms, wish list on: May 19, 2011, 12:36:05 AM
vBulletin and phpBB layouts are usually bloated "web 2.0" garbage. I like the look of the current forum.

Post volume is a problem. We need a watchlist feature, I think, and enforcement of accurate topic titles and categorization should be increased.
6819  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: AT&T "IRC Botnet" Warning on: May 18, 2011, 09:13:24 PM
I don't find the email to be unreasonable. This behavior probably is associated with botnets in almost all cases.

For a home Internet provider, I've found AT&T to be pretty accommodating. They unblocked my SMTP port as soon as I asked them, for example.
6820  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Associating identities together on: May 18, 2011, 09:06:23 PM
Yes to both questions. See:
