1241  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: ATI Overdrive on Linux for 5850 and 5970? on: March 05, 2011, 09:47:48 AM
Any idea how to change voltage on these cards? AMDOverdriveCtrl tool do not allow to set it higher 1.05V
I believe what moa tried to say was that you have to use the Radeon BIOS Editor (under Windows) and flash them.
1242  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: poclbm autostart on Ubuntu 10.10? (30 BTC) on: March 04, 2011, 08:57:15 AM
You can try making a file called /etc/rc5.d/S50bcminer and putting the commands in it. Make sure it is executable (chmod +x /etc/rc5.d/S50bcminer). The GPU miners require the X-server, but it is only started when the computer reaches run level 5. rc.local is executed at run level 3. Putting it in rc5.d with that name makes sure the script isn't run until the server has started and everything else has been loaded. The S50 part is there because the files are executed in sorted order, the rest (bcminer) you can change to whatever you want.

90 degrees is very close to the edge, I try to never let it go above 80 degrees by manually controlling the fan speed. If you're very close to the edge of where it will crash (20-30 MHz below) or you're over volting it should be even lower.
1244  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Cooperative mining (90Ghash/s) on: March 03, 2011, 09:10:47 AM
I want the computer to do Something rather than sit there displaying pictures, or something unproductive like that.  Mostly this computer runs P2P stuff.  So, whatever energy may be wasted on such a small amount of mining capability, is not wasted at all on the other things I have it doing.  So, it's OK with me.
The CPU probably uses noticably more power when it calculates hashes than when it's just displaying pictures or transfering data. Even though it's not very much, it's unlikely that you earn enough from hashing to cover the extra power consumption.
1245  Economy / Economics / Re: The real problem behind inflation on: March 02, 2011, 10:54:28 AM
In the meantime, there is some amount of economic activity around Bitcoin. If you are keeping some coins, it doesn't affect the level of economic activity of others, but it does raise the value of those coins that are economically active, this increasing the size of the Bitcoin economy that can be supported when you and the other savers do eventually start spending.
The size of the economy does not increase because the value of bitcoins gets higher, it increases if there is more trade. People who hold on to their bitcoins do not contribute to trade. The value of the bitcoin compared to other things is just a reflection of how much competition there is for the coins that are available for trade, it does not say anything about how large the total economy is.

Providing liquidity is neither saving nor investing.
But then I didn't say so, and since this is a smartass reply to another smartass reply I'm not going to elaborate either.
1247  Economy / Economics / Re: The real problem behind inflation on: March 02, 2011, 08:43:51 AM
[Holding bitcoin actually is an investment in production, and that's where I believe your thinking betrays you...you view it simply as an unproductive medium, but that is grossly discounts the value that the platform is creating...you are investing in a community (rather than a company)...you are providing that community with liquidity to expand and improve the platform.
If I'm keeping the currency to myself then I'm doing the exact opposite of providing liquidity.
1248  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Some questionable aspects of Bitcoin on: March 01, 2011, 07:01:08 PM
You may already know, but the wish for a currency with limited supply and anonymous payments is driven mainly by ideology. For the followers of this ideology, no price is too high if they think it gives them what they want.

Also how are you running memory so low? Do you mean 1155? Or is it really that low? (Edit: Seems to be 1155. At 1100 I start losing ~5Mh/sec. At 1150 I get the same as 1280, so it's sticking there.)
No, I really meant 155, but I was a little off. It's at 160. I start Afterburner, put it to the lowest memory clock, exit Afterburner, rinse, repeat. I noticed I got a little higher Mhash with higher memory frequency if I specify -v, but it's still a lot slower than with no -v. I use Stream 2.2 and 64 bit W7.
1250  Economy / Economics / Re: The real problem behind inflation on: March 01, 2011, 05:09:09 PM
I'd argue that the returns you could expect from such deflation would fall far short of other investment opportunities that would be available to you.
The amount of currency will be the same, but the amount of available goods will increase with (increase in productivity) * (increase in population). This will most likely make the value of currency increase more than you could expect in return from an average investment in production.
1251  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bubble imminent on: March 01, 2011, 04:54:16 PM
Wrong, there's just not enough speculators to stabilize exchange rate.
Just like there aren't enough speculators in the gold market to stabilise the gold price?
1252  Economy / Economics / Re: The real problem behind inflation on: March 01, 2011, 01:39:50 PM
"keeping all your wealth in currency" ...well, that would be a really, really dumb idea.  Keeping all of your wealth in any one thing is a never a good thing.  Any financial planner preaches diversification.  What you describe is no different than keeping some of your wealth in land, gold, silver or just about anything else of value with intrinsic scarcity (something almost everyone does).
The reason why people preach diversification is that you can't really know for sure what will be valuable in the future. If you do, diversification is stupid. Of course, in any economy you would diversify a little, but if you expect the currency to increase more than everything else in value, the rational thing is to keep as much exposure to it as you can afford, and not trade it away unless you have to.
1253  Economy / Economics / Re: Distribution of Wealth on: March 01, 2011, 01:25:46 PM
The thing about "big" traders is that one day there were all "small" traders ... but not many vice versa.
Unless they inherited their money, which is the case for about 3/4 of the wealth in the US today.
1254  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Software to optimize gpu performance? on: March 01, 2011, 10:25:44 AM
On the Windows box, I use Sapphire TRIXX...controls the fan well, doesn't require special unlocking techniques, but has a PITA registration requirement to download. Slight overclock gets me ~295Mh/sec on a single HD6950 1GB, 850/1280, -v -w 128.
That's weird. On my 6950 I only get 150 Mh with -v -w 128, but 310 Mh with -w 64 -f 1 and no -v. You can save some power by lowering the memory speed. I'm running memory at 155 Mhz with no loss in Mh. Perhaps you have one of the new 6950s with 1GB RAM, or you haven't unlocked the shaders?
1255  Economy / Economics / Re: The real problem behind inflation on: March 01, 2011, 09:33:46 AM
If I come up with a basket of essential goods (lets say what the average person needs to eat each day to survive) and publish a price index based on it, people could use it as a reference point when pricing goods and services in order to get a desirable and stable accounting unit...people could base loans and contracts on this index.
They could, but if the people who have the limited resource (the currency) were smart, they wouldn't. They know that productivity and population will only increase, but the amount of money will stay the same, so unless you come up with some unusually good way to produce something more efficiently, keeping all your wealth in currency will be the best way to get richer. Of course, people seeing this will make them over invest in currency, creating bubbles. At some point it will burst when somebody starts selling, the price falls and everybody panics. Then the same will happen all over again. We see this cycle in the gold price, and it will also happen to bitcoins.
1256  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Forex expert advisor on: February 28, 2011, 11:51:20 AM
Currency trading is a zero sum game. If anybody found a way to reliably beat the odds in this billion dollar market, do you really think they'd sell it this cheap? Unless you're very lucky you'll lose money after fees.
1257  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Wallet backup in the cloud on: February 28, 2011, 10:58:42 AM
Many professional offsite backup solutions can be mounted locally, so all that would really be needed is the possibility to add a second location to save wallet.dat. This would be very helpful for most solutions. Personally I would save it to a home server, but even just saving to a different drive on the same computer would help in a lot of situations. I'd rather have the ability to password protect the wallet than built in offsite backup support.
1258  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: GNU/Linux or Windows? on: February 28, 2011, 10:18:33 AM
You can log in using SSH and control pretty much everything, which means you can access all the functionality even from a smart phone with an ssh client. If you run your text mode programs using the program screen you can disconnect and reconnect later to the same session. Main drawback (for miners) is the lack of an Afterburner equivalent.
1259  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Cooperative mining (>70Ghash/s) on: February 28, 2011, 10:09:37 AM
Has any one that has found at least 1 block for the pool earned more payout than the average?
I've found 2 blocks and earned about 185 BTC (+10 unconfirmed).

Now has anyone experimented with UNDERVOLTING video cards?  I used to have a pentium M ULV that I could undervolt by 25% (no overclocking!) and it ran perfectly.  I increased my battery life by doing this.
ATI cards will undervolt by default when they run in 2D mode (lower frequency), so it's quite possible. Unfortunately the only way I can do it on the cards I have is by flashing the firmware. If you're lucky Afterburner can do it on the fly.
