We're considering all options.
The downside to a fixed address is when someone wants to cash out to someone else, which happens all the time.

We're looking at the best way to authenticate and will implement something soon.

-Jered

When this patch will be accepted in bitcoin (it allows to sign a message with a bitcoin address), you could require a bitcoin address at the registration time and if people wan't to withdraw to another address, they just have to sign the new address with the default address. This allow you to :
- prove you own the original address (you can only sign messages with this address if it is in your wallet and you own the private key)
- give your trust to other addresses

Signing a message :
1L5zqFahc8Ahu9wtgJqCeJMendvD174xsG is the address given at registration time.
Code:
./bitcoind signmessage 1L5zqFahc8Ahu9wtgJqCeJMendvD174xsG "New address : xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"

Then, you need to give the output of the command to the website which will verify it (another "simple" command line). And it's done :
- identity verified
- the new address is provided by the verified identity in a secured way

267  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [promo : 2BTC/domain] Register/host .bit domains with bitcoins on: June 20, 2011, 09:45:35 AM
It's already secured in that way :
- all passwords are hashed with random salts.
- private data are reduced to the minimum (from an email to nothing)
- web hosting accounts are isolated (unix & mysql rights)

ps : i don't have 400k of BTC to be stolen.
268  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Namecoin block explorer on: June 19, 2011, 08:48:50 PM
Testnet is now available :
http://testnet.explorer.dot-bit.org/
http://testnet.explorer.bit/

You can now query custom ranges for blocks (b), transactions (tx) and names (n) :
http://explorer.bit/nbb=30/fromb=0 (last 30 blocks)
http://explorer.bit/nbtx=50/fromtx=100 (last 50 tx, ignoring first 100 tx)
http://explorer.bit/nbn=100 (last 100 names)
http://explorer.bit/fromn=100 (last 15 names, ignoring first 100)

max nb value is 100, default is 15.
from starts from the end, which mean 0 = most recent record (results are displayed in the same order).

272  Economy / Economics / Re: The second crypto currency is here and is currently trading at 10 for 1 BTC on: June 17, 2011, 09:01:40 PM
All of that sounds good.

The system seems rigged against alternate dns.

Why does windows have only two spots for dns?  Something like this is going to need either a lot more or a different way of doing this.

We should have some kind of application where the user download something to allow them to have an ever updating list of dns addresses…

Perhaps I'm using the wrong terms.  I'm thinking of something along the lines of ad block plus subscriptions to keep all the dot bit addresses available.

This is possible with :
- namecoin
- a (local) proxy which will query records for .bit in namecoin
- a (local) proxy which will send request to webservers

This method is still not well explained, but it is possible and will be easy in the future :
https://dot-bit.org/HowToBrowseBitDomains#Use_a_proxy_in_your_applications

(It is not possible to query only DNS requests with a proxy and to send request without)

Renewal is free, but you may pay a fee in some cases (like bitcoin transactions). You own it while you renew before expire time and you are the only one to be able to control it !

It's early days still.  So people will need to adjust their settings to use nameservers with .bit support.  Sometime in the future .bit may be added as an official TLD... but who knows
I hope it well never become an ICANN TLD, otherwise, someone may have control on this TLD and this is against our aim.
274  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [PULL] Sign and verify message with bitcoin address and public key on: June 17, 2011, 02:44:29 PM

275  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [announce] Register .bit domains with bitcoins (+ hosting) on: June 17, 2011, 02:20:57 PM
NMC amount needed to register a domain is decreasing so...

Price are lowered to 2BTC per domain !!
=> http://register.dot-bit.org / http://register.bit

But, NMC value is increasing again, so, i don't how long it will last :p

279  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [announce] Namecoin - a distributed naming system based on Bitcoin on: June 15, 2011, 01:08:29 PM
Does .bit domain just support tor hidden service?
Not yet. I'll web available in the next domain spec and implemented in software proxies (DNS won't be able to support that).

And how can i configure my domain .bit to redirect to "example.com" via JSON with name_update?
Redirect is not possible without a web hosting that does the redirect. I offer this service with a new domain here : http://register.dot-bit.org/, else 1BTC/year.
Another solution is to wait for the next spec and configure alias and translate, then, if you can add yourdomain.bit to your current web hosting, you can do what you want, if you can add the .bit domain... (not allowed by a lot of web hosting)
You can already do that but putting the ip address of your web server (or ns servers) and configure your web hosting (same remark).

Does the namecoin support only ip/ip6?
Current spec supports only ipv4 in records, but using the ns record will allow you to use ipv6 (see http://dot-bit.org/Domain_names).

How can do the redirect with JSON value?
Using ip or ns, and then configure your web hosting, if possible.
