This is also the second thing I have bought with coins. First was a Nerd Merit Badge.
322  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I have a Chance to Talk to Jim Rickards Tomorrow on: February 03, 2012, 06:00:31 AM
I'd love to hear an update as to what Rickards had to say about Bitcoin...

Ok, so he entertained questions about the IMF and SDRs most of the time, but I asked him about Bitcoin at the end, and his response was pretty basic:

"Bitcoin looks great as an exchange currency, but not as a reserve currency."

He had heard of it before, so I didn't have to explain it to him. Very interesting talk overall, but it was focused more on how a global currency crash would happen rather than exploring options for new currencies.

A&M?

Yeah!

  • With Bitcoin, the money supply can be subdivided indefinitely as market forces demand.

What do you mean by this? I know that it can be divided down to 10-8 units, but no further. Are you referring to something different?
324  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I have a Chance to Talk to Jim Rickards Tomorrow on: February 01, 2012, 09:07:04 PM
My understanding is that while the transactions themselves are public, the identity of whose is carrying them out isn't. It can be deduced with some degree of effort, but it can also be hidden by taking the appropriate steps if so desired.

Well it shouldn't be too hard. Think if you just bought something from a company with BTC, then you can trace your coins through that company's transactions forever. Alternatively, if there was some large, publicly-known transaction -- say a government purchase -- then you will be able to know exactly what the government does with all those coins.

Governments and companies will not like this aspect, and I'm sure that there are block chain analysis companies / tools in the works. Ultimately, companies and governments will have to accept Bitcoin for it to take hold long term.

I would not argue against a gold standard to Jim.  Besides, I don't think he's in favor of a gold standard per-se.

Thanks for the article, Steve.

Rickards seems to be encouraging a gold-backed currency for use in international trade, such that countries could not unilaterally drop the standard (or if they did, they would lose the ability to conduct trade).

He also advises a significant amount of study before implementing a new standard, calling for one "flexible enough to accommodate modern central banking practices."
325  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / I have a Chance to Talk to Jim Rickards Tomorrow on: February 01, 2012, 07:30:54 PM
He's the author of Currency Wars, and he's coming to my class tomorrow. He advocates a return to the gold standard.

What would be the best way to pitch Bitcoin to him?

My line of thinking is that we have uncertainty in the rate of growth of the gold supply, but we have much greater certainty in the quantity of Bitcoin being produced. The issue of transport is also solved - simply send (a series of) transactions over the network to transfer a large Bitcoin holding.

One very strong argument against Bitcoin is the public transaction ledger: corporations / governments / individuals would not be able to conduct secret transactions.

I can breathe again!!! Smiley

Yup, working much better here now

Just saw the script reconnect. Works like a charm.

I scrolled back through my console output and saw four reconnects - no more reloads!

This is a big development for the site, and I'm glad it finally happened. Thanks for kicking my butt into gear with this thread.
327  Economy / Speculation / Re: Clark moody sucking for anyone else? on: January 26, 2012, 12:11:14 AM
I glanced at the socket.io documentation and found what I needed to make the connection automatically reconnect after a disconnection. You should see messages in the Console at the bottom of the screen informing you of the progress of the reconnect attempts.

Let me know if the new code works for you. Maybe this refresh will be your last  Cool
328  Economy / Speculation / Re: Clark moody sucking for anyone else? on: January 25, 2012, 10:15:14 PM
I will be looking into the socket.io documentation a little more closely to see if I can't force the connection to restart when this disconnect behavior is detected.

I agree that having to refresh the page every so often is pretty lame. It reflects poorly on my site's reliability, even though the real time data stream is controlled by Gox.
329  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Bitcoinica model is flawed on: January 23, 2012, 04:20:37 PM
Has anyone found any resources on how to start a brokerage? Or a retail forex shop?

This is essentially what Bitcoinica is.
330  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Real Time Charting, Order Book, and Time & Sales on: January 22, 2012, 12:08:22 AM
Right, i get that part but im talking the depth, every 30-1hr i have to refresh the site to get real depth numbers and sums.

I describe this phenomenon here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=60132.msg702035#msg702035
331  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Real Time Charting, Order Book, and Time & Sales on: January 21, 2012, 09:39:38 PM
The system seems to not remove order book info at times and during large buys or sells it misses a lot of trades.  Can anything be done about this?

If you watch, the book will correct itself after the next ticker message comes in - it eliminates any bids higher (asks lower) than those given in the ticker message.
332  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: solved: how to send optional arguments in PHP with jsonRPC on: January 21, 2012, 04:28:05 PM
I think this will work to select the last 25 transactions, regardless of account:

Code:
listtransactions('*',25)

Just wanted to drop by to let you know how much I appreciate what you have built here. It is truly one of the most helpful trading tools in the bitcoin world, I cannot wait to see how your trading platform you mentioned that you are currently developing turns out. Another plus, your website actually works reliably on my Android phone, which is something that cannot be said about MtGoxlive. I'll be sure to send you a small donation to express my gratitude for your continued work once I get my trading in order.

Thank you very much. I think the trading platform will be a welcome addition to the Bitcoin exchange economy.
334  Economy / Speculation / Re: clark moody back up on: January 19, 2012, 04:33:54 PM
I have been experiencing a problem with the site before and after the move and I am wondering if anyone else is having the same problem. Not every hour but frequently on the hours it stops responding and I have to refresh. It seems weird it is always on the hour and I was wondering if other people were experiencing this and if so what they have done to prevent/fix it?

YES, for me it is every hour. I know now to refresh the moment it crosses over.

I believe MtGox is resetting the socket.io server every two hours. My bandwidth logs show peaks of refresh activity at that interval.

It looks to be the odd (not even) hours where the reset occurs. I too have been refreshing the thing right around that time.

And thanks everyone for the kind words. As for future development, I am building a web-based trading platform that should be very nice.
335  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Real Time Charting, Order Book, and Time & Sales on: January 18, 2012, 07:11:22 PM
The new host is seriously faster, but maybe I am the only one looking so far. So fast.  Cool

I also wrote a significant modification to the way it fetches the bars for the chart, so new server + new code should result in a better experience.

Its working again. What browser do you recommend, Clark? In my current browser, there are masses of yellow lines whenever I mouse over the chart, making it unreadable, like so:

The new client-side code has a fix for this that hopefully works now. The issue here is that I can't recreate that bug, so I'm guessing a little bit. Please let me know if anything changes for you.
336  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Real Time Charting, Order Book, and Time & Sales on: January 18, 2012, 08:57:12 AM
And we're back, hopefully for a while this time.

I have changed hosting to BitVPS, and for their awesome help, I am placing a graphic ad on my site.

Please let me know if anything is awry with the new hosting. There are some client- and server-side tweaks that should make the site faster when loading data from the exchange.

Of all the days to be down, this one had to be the one with the crazy price action!
337  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Real Time Charting, Order Book, and Time & Sales on: January 18, 2012, 01:04:47 AM
and ofc on a day where bitcoin jumps from 6,9 to 4,64 and back to 6,5 in less then 12 hours oh well ... hope it gets up soon Smiley

Yeah, it's crazy! Someone is currently buying ~86k coins!
338  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Realtime MtGox Time and Sales on: January 17, 2012, 08:52:14 PM
what does it mean: Your account is suspended?
I can't use clarkmoody since today.

I am in the process of switching servers.
339  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Real Time Charting, Order Book, and Time & Sales on: January 17, 2012, 05:37:14 PM
When I visit http://bitcoin.clarkmoody.com it says "Account Suspended".  Did you run out of bandwidth?

Bandwidth is not the issue.

I maxed out the processor on my shared server. (Yes I know I should have VPS/AWS by now)

I'll be working on a server migration today.
340  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Can anybody explain to me the concept of Scalping on: January 12, 2012, 06:47:54 PM
scalping is when you cut a nice line across the top of someones forehead and then with a firm yank rip the top of someones head off

In essence, you are taking a little off the top of the market movements.
