1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Using a separate bank account for Bitcoin income on: July 25, 2013, 12:31:25 AM
I just got an account with the Internet Archive Credit Union, took about 3 days for the phone interview, they have gone on record as supporting bitcoin so I would give them a try.

Just a tip, whenever I exchange some USD into BTC, I do something like
Assets:BTCWallet  ฿20 @@ $384

What keystroke do you use to get "฿"?

I google searched for Thai Baht, and copy/pasted the character. Sorry  Undecided

No worries. Smiley

Also whatever text editor you use, there are ways to make data entry easier.  There's a lot of examples in the manual about emac but I get along fine with vim and snippets, you can find more info at http://ledger-cli.org.

...or just use this link:
http://www.ledger-cli.org/

It still is actively maintained + developed (https://github.com/ledger/ledger).

Anyways, seems VERY nice, if only there would be some nice frontends for reports, graphs and stuff. Also that text file approach sounds interesting, but might not be appealing to everyone.

It's VERY VERY nice actually, (for me anyway). Smiley At any rate, here is the subreddit that introduced it to me, it gives out a very though explanation on how to get started and might be easier than the docs.

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/155gw5/heres_how_you_use_ledger_to_account_for_bitcoin/

Also, there's a link to a python script that will pull spot prices for silver, gold and BTC.

As far as the frontend support goes, it supports GNUplot for graphs and such.
8  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitvisitor working for you? on: January 28, 2013, 06:02:59 PM
It works for me, I have a python script that I scarfed from /r/bitcoin that works pretty well.

Ledger.

Do a search for "ledger" on the reddit subereddit /r/bitcoin. Works great for bitcoin, has a script that pulls spot price from mtgox and has gotten me to get off gnucash completely. Takes some getting used to but is awesome.  Won't be for everyone.
10  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Is there an asset tracking software that supports Bitcoin? (Better than GnuCash) on: January 19, 2013, 07:39:48 AM
Ledger.  It's awesome!

I was using gnucash but now I've moved completely to it, and I get up to date spot price on silver, gold and bitcoin!

11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin making inroads with the hardcore gold bugs? on: January 04, 2013, 01:42:29 AM
I see intrinsic value in bitcoin quite clearly.

I agree with everything you said but the above quote disqualifies you from being a hardcore gold bug. A hardcore gold bug is really big on what he calls a tangible intrinsic value, just listen to James Turk in this interview to see what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfzHC7Pf2fk

Being a gold bug and a Bitcoin bug is possible, being a hardcore gold bug and a Bitcoin bug on the other hand, at least by my definitions, is mutually exclusive. And if people like James ever decide to treat Bitcoin as money they will by my definition stop being hardcore gold bug and start being merely gold bugs.

It's the whole reason why this thread's topic is "Bitcoin making inroads with the hardcore gold bugs?" and not "Bitcoin making inroads with the gold bugs?".
I see your point now, thanks for the link and the explanation!
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin making inroads with the hardcore gold bugs? on: January 04, 2013, 12:10:28 AM
Someone who:
- trusts only gold and maybe silver as a store of wealth
- will take only physical
- mistrusts anything that doesn't have the so called intrinsic value in the role of money
tl; dr - If you could get someone to accept a silver coin to buy $5 of groceries, how would they give you your change? Cut a silver coin into fractions? Weigh you out some scrap silver? Not likely. Gold and silver are assets/commodities, not really money. They're the best assets out there perhaps, but not money, not in a 21st century sense of the word.

I hold silver dimes, grains, .5 oz rounds and bars, shot, etc.  There are ways.  I think I see your meaning behind the gold/silver being commodities but I will respectfully disagree with you on it "not really money".
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin making inroads with the hardcore gold bugs? on: January 04, 2013, 12:04:53 AM
What is your definition of a hardcore gold bug? Because whatever it is, it certainly isn't mine.

Well, I believe in all three, so I'm not sure what is so incompatible with that viewpoint and bitcoin.

I have no problem using or seeing the intrinsic qualities that bitcoin possesses that are analogous to gold, ie limited supply, can't be inflated, requires an expenditure of resources to obtain, etc.

Bitcoin fits in quite well with the physical possession quality on the second point.  I hold my bitcoins, no one else certainly does.

For your third, I'm not sure what you mean.  I see intrinsic value in bitcoin quite clearly.

Not trying to be argumentative, really, I just don't really see your point that a goldbug would shy away from bitcoin.  Perhaps it's the fact that I have a strong technical nature but Gold/Silver/Bitcoins are the only real way to go for me, the only USD I hold is for liquidity's sake.

Man it sure seems we're just on the cusp of new and bigger avalanche of users that are about to (re)discover and finally adopt Bitcoin! Cheesy
There is no difference in being a hardcore goldbug and being a hardcore cryptobug. It is the same mentality.

Yes and both are pursuing a less than optimal strategy hence why I'm neither and own both PMs and bitcoins. So I fail to see the relevancy of your post as a reply to my OP.

I consider myself both a PM bug and a crypto bug and I own both as well.  I think that was the relevancy.

Read the topic again. The title says "hardcore gold bugs". By the definition you're not one of them.

What is your definition of a hardcore gold bug? Because whatever it is, it certainly isn't mine.
How many oz's does one have to have to be considered hard core?

Why cant i be a hardcore gold bug and a hardcore crypto bug at the same time.

16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Natural progression for a Silverbug: Bitcoin on: January 01, 2013, 03:03:14 AM
I heard about bitcoin before I got into silver but I only played around with bitcoin, it was silver that harkened my economic awakening, I'm far more heavily invested in silver but I definitely am all about the crypto anarchy and I personally believe the future currency is going to be precious metal backed bitcoinage.

I think gold and silver bugs totally understand the strengths of bitcoin, once they've learned what bitcoin actually is.

17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: jgarzik goes berzerk in #bitcoin-dev, wtf? on: November 30, 2012, 06:52:35 PM
And here we go again. The ban was silly. Garzik coward behavior is ridiculous.

If there's any good in Bitcoin, it's its potential to allow people to circumvent governments. Allowing Iranians to bypass foreign sanctions is a perfect, "text-book" use case for Bitcoin. Even WordPress understands it, but one of the core developers apparently doesn't.

Mind your own business, dude.  We're not in the business of telling dank or anyone else what to do, and neither are you.

Shut your mouth, dude.  He has 10x your community involvement and has done a lot more good around here than you.  Respect those who were here before you.

I have no community involvement yet but I have to say, he only typed what I was thinking.  If someone wants to sell gold or silver in BTC without involving the IRS, more power to them.  Anyone who steps in to remind another of the slave state tax rules is a slave themselves.  the IRS can go screw.

I personally think anonymous BTC exchange to gold/siver is going to be just what we need.

Oh, and the IRS can go screw.
19  Economy / Goods / Re: Dank Metal - Silver and gold for BTC @ Spot Price on: November 18, 2012, 10:24:38 PM
Hope you realise that dealers in silver and gold - including coins - are required to report transactions over $600 to the IRS as of 1 January this year and that if you're selling them as an individual you're required to report any profit you make on the sale as a capital gain.

Mind your own business, dude.  We're not in the business of telling dank or anyone else what to do, and neither are you.
Amen on that.

Hi everyone
<snip>

Thank you for the update, you guys are awesome.  Sorry to hear about the recent attack and glad that the Tor blockage is only temporary, I had a moment where I thought it was related to AML laws or something.  Anyway, I'm glad and I think you guys have an awesome service!  Wink
