This is good news for Bitcoin "Cyprus has 99% of bitcoins utilization by their citizens in regular shopping"

I believe the author's grasp on english has created this fail.

In any way you interpret this quote, it's highly unlikely that is the case.

Just spoke to the bartender at the Marriott. Apparently they won't close the bar till midnight, and if things are really going crazy, they'll stay open till 1:30am.

I heard the Hilton's bar closes at 10pm...

So the Marriott is where it's at :-D

So pumped to be here... I'd be down for a meetup Smiley

I'm the dude in the black shirt walking around with the pretty girl Smiley

Welcome to New York City's dedicated group of Bitcoin enthusiasts and professionals!

BitcoinNYC.org

Launched with our first meeting held on March 26, 2013, we are an open-invite group that gathers together every week to help foster and grow the NYC Bitcoin community. We currently host discussions every Thursday at 6:00 PM, with each week focused on a different topic. Our goal is to provide a central location for newcomers, experts, and leaders in need of resources, support, and/or a platform on which to launch any Bitcoin-related services, events, or campaigns within the city. We have over 150 members and are growing very quickly. Our current space has been maxed out at 50 for the last few weeks, and we are looking to expand in the near future.

One campaign, launched by Maximo Joshua Rossi during our "Entrepreneurs Week" meetup on May 2nd, has garnered a lot of attention with the press recently:

147  Economy / Economics / Re: On "intrinsic value" and why it actually means "subjective value" on: April 21, 2013, 08:26:45 PM
A has intrinsic value to B if A is required for B to continue to exist (regardless if B wants to continue to exist or not)!

The argument is that bitcoin lack intrinsic value. Given Holliday's definition, this is true. Humans do not require bitcoin to live. Humans also do not require gold or silver to live. Thus, neither gold or silver would have intrinsic value. So, the argument used by those that would suggest that gold and silver do have intrinsic value and because of that, they are better alternatives to bitcoin is flawed.

I agree completely! Smiley

Using Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to help illustrate my opinion, I believe that gold, silver, Bitcoin, and money in general has intrinsic value to those who have fulfilled all of their inferior needs to exist.

Regardless of quality of life, keep in mind that nonphysical needs can often times be so strong, that people will kill themselves in lack of it.

So I would say that value is always subjective, and that intrinsic value is a subjective term.

To help us understand certain theories and make conclusions about the future, we can derive a consensus of what "most" people believe to be valuable (and thus what has intrinsic value for a majority), but that definition is not constant, always changes, and excludes many. Thus, it is useless in any discussion involving time-sensitive terms (of which there are few).

148  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Roger Ver and Jon Matonis pushed aside now that Bitcoin is becoming mainstream on: April 21, 2013, 07:05:41 PM
But Bitcoin is not a political revolution. Projecting such things onto Bitcoin is precisely why Matonis should not be included in the press center.
Bitcoin is a technological revolution, like asymmetric cryptography or global networking.

First of all, Bitcoin is not just a technological revolution. Satoshi mentioned himself, numerous times, that this project was inspired by a political ideology. I understand the point of trying to keep it as neutral as possible, but Bitcoin's foundation wasn't built on purely neutral grounds, so it would seem forced and disingenuous to the public in trying to do so. It goes against the nature of what Bitcoin was founded on, to try and subdue that ideology. Not to mention a waste of time, since all of the media can realize that Bitcoin has great potential to change politics.

The point is to have individuals who recognize Bitcoin as being independent of politics, regardless of their own political views.
I hate political correctness as much as everyone else.

I think this opinion is too picky. We are wasting excellent talent over the lack of being flawless.

Based off the evidence presented in this thread, Roger Ver hasn't done anything in his past that would make me feel uncomfortable being another representative of Bitcoin to the press. He seems like an outstanding guy to me, and very intelligent. He always provides a good interview.

On the other hand, Jon Matonis has an impressive ability to form exactly the right response. Truthfully, I believe he is not only excellent at taking interviews about Bitcoin, but of all the people I've seen, he is the very best. Every time I listen to an interview with him, I find myself shouting at my computer "YES. THAT IS EXACTLY THE WAY THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN PHRASED."

I support having them on our list of press contacts. Not to do so would be such a waste of talented resources.

Believe it or not, Colbert actually seemed pretty positive on Bitcoin here...

The devils advocate he played this time was seemingly on the side of Bitcoin.

Very exciting  Wink

154  Economy / Services / Open source Bitcoin POS for Digital Goods on: April 18, 2013, 11:24:16 PM
Does there exist open source code for a digital Bitcoin POS?

For example, if I'm trying to sell blog viewings by creating individual bitcoin addresses to a specific customers, is there code that has been written to make implementation of this simple already?

Thank you!!

156  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: BitcoinNYC Meetup #004 - How To Get NYC Merchants Onboard on: April 15, 2013, 01:15:35 AM
The official website for the group is www.BitcoinNYC.org

These weekly meetups are really a lot of fun Cheesy

Last thursday we placed bets on what the gox price would be 5 min after their servers came back online from being down for hours...

( I lost :-P )

Seriously though, if you're in the NYC area and want to get your Bitcoin fix, hang out with some like-minded people, or are new to Bitcoin and want to get an idea of what it's all about, definitely go to one of these meetings. All sorts of topics are brought up. You can ask whatever you want, the discussions are unrestricted and open, and I guarantee that someone will know something about whatever you're specifically interested in. Most times, someone knows A LOT about it.

I've gotta say, since I've gone, I've been exposed to some very interesting Bitcoin-related projects, and also some very innovative ways of doing things I already knew about. Also, my girlfriend get's a break from having to hear me rant on and on about Bitcoin... so I think it has helped with my relationship a bit too Cheesy

Attendance is up every week. We started with about 10 guys the first week, and I think we had about 20+ last week... the Bitcoin community is growing here in New York City Smiley

I'm looking forward to discussing merchant acceptance with all you guys this Thursday! Let's see if we can get some stores in manhattan to join in on the fun...

Should be a good time, as usual Cheesy

159  Economy / Economics / Re: I am out of here! on: April 13, 2013, 05:50:44 PM
Interesting... the possibility of a member leaving just made me realize how important all this speculation is for Bitcoin.

We are quite literally leading the way for its fundamental use around the world.

You could even say, as speculators... we are the FUTURE of Bitcoin. Everyone else just takes advantage of the paths we lay first through our risk-taking and discovery.

Some have a strong faith in Bitcoin's purpose, others do not, are in it solely for the money, and end up leaving.

It is up to those who are true believers to convince the world that this is valuable.

I thank anyone who does stay and contribute. I really believe in this project. I know it's hard sometimes when competing against the pure greed of society, but there was an instance when you thought Bitcoin was valuable for some reason or another... keep whatever that was in mind.

Thanks  Smiley
160  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-04-12 krugman.blogs.nytimes.com - Adam Smith Hates Bitcoin on: April 13, 2013, 05:59:46 AM
"Adam Smith Hates Paul Krugman, Has Affair With Electricity"

It's true because I said so as the title of something and wrote a few words about it.

And because I said so because I'm Paul Krugman and fuck you.

Oh and stop using electricity. We have more important wars to fund, people to starve, television to watch, and societies to control using paper.

Adam Smith said so... Though, he he did leave me for the ground.  Cry
