Only if it's something interesting enough to get people to come buy bitcoins.

Silk Road might have made some bad PR for bitcoin, but people came and bought them under the guise that they could buy drugs anonymously.

Amazing how short some memories are...

Not really. The smaller the mind, the smaller the memory.

The plummet continues... >10% fall from today's high since Mt. Gox opened. No news to break the trend in sight, many holders traumatized by the hack.

No one will fall for your trolling.

Just stating the facts mam.

Oh, I guess facts is facts.

Riddle me this DrYe5... What happens to the exchange rate when one side of the orderbook is empty???

What do you think will happen when Mt. Gox opens with no BTC on the orderbook because everybody withdrew it?

Mt. Gox will be shortly irrelevant so I'm not sure the point of your question.  Only a fool would trust their money to Mt. Gox.

I love how everyone is calling the demise of Mt Gox. Too bad none of them are man enough to eat the humble pie when it's time.

If Mt Gox does not become irrelevant, it only speaks to the stupidity of its users.

Yeah, because no corporation, bank, or any other institution has ever been compromised or done anything to lose the trust of their users and successfully recovered to come back and be stronger than they were before. Good point.

Could you point out a bank that has had all of its clients' usernames and passwords released to the public?

Same lame apples to oranges arguments. Mt Gox is not a bank, quit trying to pick a nuclear option out of a list of generalized examples.

If all that was compromised at my bank was my password, I'd be ecstatic. Who the hell is going to post a password file when they break into a bank? They steal account info, personal info, everything they need to get credit. Just like Citi.

Yeah, because no corporation, bank, or any other institution has ever been compromised or done anything to lose the trust of their users and successfully recovered to come back and be stronger than they were before. They all went straight out of business and all their customers and investors were "stupid for staying with them". Good point.

For someone representing an economist you suck at answering simple economics questions.

Starting to see some signs of a cash out on TH...

I thought economists predicted things, not play-by-play commentary. So, 'professor', anything regarding the future? Don't worry, we won't be too rough on you, after all - economist is one of the few jobs where you can be wrong and still be employed. Smiley

I have consistently stated we should see a price of $7-$9 not long after Mt. Gox opens.
Why? Difficulty has gone up, there is ALOT more competition in the exchange market, and there are projects popping up everywhere. What is an indicator to you that we are headed for single digits ?

Lack of trust in the currency.  As of late, it increasingly appears that you have no recourse in the face of criminal activity.
Who's lacking trust in the actual currency? If anything people are lacking trusts against MTGOX. Not bitcoin lol..

This is the misconception techie types have.  Yes, Mt Gox was the one hacked, however that hacking showed people that they have no recourse when there money is stolen.  A Bitcoin Deposit Insurance Corp. type entity is vital if this currency is to succeed long term.

No, it's a misconception that NON-techie and the ill informed have.

For there to be a BDIC there would have to be a bitcoin bank, and a bitcoin bank it a pretty lame idea until the bank can have recourse against someone who defaults on a loan.

149  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MTGOX re-launch? how did you handle it? on: June 25, 2011, 06:34:01 PM
how did you guys handle the mtgox relaunch right now?

i personally cashed all my BTC over to www.tradehill.com and being right now active in trading again.
i got so used to mtgox trading, i really missed playing with my money.

Right now I'm watching everyone who moved/is moving their coins over to tradehill start to panic as the price drops since it's the weekend.
If you guys keep going I might even be able to buy back my few coins that I sold in the 13 range the other day at a profit.

Just sit back and watch the volume rise and the price fall. I don't normally drink before noon, but I might make an exception today.

It's really sad that this actually has to be posted.

It's even more sad that none of the malicious posters will even have an ounce of regret.
152  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New features of the relaunched Mt.Gox revieled !!! on: June 25, 2011, 04:40:00 PM
I think these new features are good, But once you get negative press it is hard to recover.

Yeah, while they were down, they also launched a new backend which they have been intending on doing for at least 2 week now. It will probably also be able to handle much more volume than the old one and not lock up in big volume trades.

154  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Detected a new card, now Ubuntu hangs on the loading screen (.5 bounty) on: June 23, 2011, 10:57:06 PM
Has anybody else experienced this problem? I switched one of the pci-e risers because it was defective, now the mobo is actually detecting it, but causes Ubuntu to hang on the loading screen with 5 red dots.

Giving a .5 bounty to those whom can help me solve it.

Was it an existing card in the slot on the motherboard and you just extended it, or are you adding a new card to a new slot with an extender?

Existing slot.

x16 or x1 extender?

Is it the only card in the system? Are all the cards in the system the same card?

I'd double check that the system works with the card in the slot, and even though it shouldn't make a difference, try having the primary display card onboard.

156  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Electronic Cigarettes on: June 22, 2011, 08:32:24 PM
Wow, this is an incredibly easy way to sell things... you can put a "buy it now" button right in the forums. That never occurred to me, and it's pretty cool. If business goes well, will you be rebuilding ElectricDrag?

I quit smoking about a year and a half ago. I've been really curious about e-cigarettes ever since I heard of them, but I'm afraid starting up with them would only make me crave the real thing again. But if I were still a smoker, I'd probably be a customer!

Prefilled cartridges are definitely PG based and usually don't have any VG in them at all. If you're looking for pure VG based liquid you need to find a company that mixes liquids per order instead of selling pre-mixed bottles. I've been mixing my own liquid for over a year now (and that's over a year off cigarettes too) but I don't sell it outside of supplying it to some of my friends usually. If you want to know more, pm me and I can help you find someone that can do 100% VG e-juice.
157  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: MtGox UPDATE on: June 20, 2011, 04:22:36 AM
yeah they got into my email just few minutes ago and then i found new email from mtgox they are still hacking the site.
so DONT TRUST MTGOX they took your info and if you have same mail and same password on Dwolla change it RIGHT NOW OOOH MTGOX!!! Liability i can see if going up higher and higher by the hour.

If they got into your mail that mean you violated the #1 rule of online security by using the same password on multiple sites. You should REALLY examine your own security policies before telling everyone how much of a liability Mt Gox is.

We must convince all the "other" people to join pools now. We can't have the security of the network threatened by "other" people.

Right now Bitcoin Exchange has US$1000 (no including a $55 fee) of mine sent last Friday (6/3) by Mt Gox and expected by ACH Direct Deposit on Monday (6/6) according to our initial correspondence.

I saw user bitcoinexchange in #bitcoin-otc on Sunday night (6/5) and asked if everything was set to go with my transaction because I added a comment to PM me here at the forums when he had received my Mt Gox transfer, as I had PM'd when the Mt Gox transfer was sent. My name and banking details were retrieved and and pasted into the IRC msg window including my request  for response that was not responded to. I was told that since my transaction was ACH Direct Deposit and did not involve the problems with Paypal that my transaction would go through the next day as planned (Mon 6/6).

I did not receive this transaction as assured on Monday (6/6). Giving the benefit of the doubt I waited until Tuesday morning and left both a ;;later tell message with gribble and a PM here in the forums that I had not received my transfer.

I waited until Wed (6/8) and still did not receive a reply and decided to post in the thread. I received the message the reply in thread that my transaction (being $1000) would be received by Friday (6/10) at the latest.

I received the following forum PM Friday (6/10)

Code:

ACH
« Sent to: grndzero on: Today at 12:11:38 am »
« You have forwarded or responded to this message. »

Has your ACH arrived yet?

What is your name so I can check its status?

I replied a little over a half an hour later that I had not received my transfer and have not had any correspondence since.

At the current time of 0900 GMT -7, Saturday, June 11, 2011 I have not received this transaction after 1 week and 2 assurances when it would be sent.

I feel I have no other recourse at this time but to post this here.

I strongly believe there is sufficient reason to not do business with this person until the growing list of concerns expressed lately are resolved.

I want either proof that my transaction has been sent or my funds ($1055) returned to me on Mt Gox.

ACH is not processed on weekends. Check your PMs. You have the transaction log sent to you. Please recant your statements, as expecting a direct deposit to arrive on a weekend is expecting too much.

The last rounds went on out the 6/9, meaning they were processed on 6/10 (friday), and will arrive Monday, as BANKS DO NOT PROCESS PAYMENTS ON WEEKENDS.

From the contents of this post http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=6223.msg185974#msg185974 and your query whether it had arrived yesterday, my understanding was that it was to arrive yesterday.

Am I wrong to think so from the information given? I understand you are busy with Paypal problems and surely have other responsibilities but I think clear communication is necessary.

I spoke with my bank this morning and you are correct that they only process ACH during normal business hours. I did not know this since it was an electronic transaction and that part is my fault.

Update: My issues have thus far been addressed. I have received confirmation that a transaction in my name was sent on 6/10 and is scheduled for delivery on 6/13. Thank You

Transaction was received 6/13 as confirmed. Took a little longer than expected but definitely a worthwhile service.

Thanks Bitcoin Exchange
