701  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-11-05 Forbes: This Swiss Cryptocurrency Trader Will Store Your Bitcoin... on: November 05, 2013, 05:49:18 PM
“Bitcoin is gaining traction,” he said. “This means the hardware infrastructure needs to be secured in the best possible way. A former bunker of the Swiss Army supplies all we need to give this desired level of security.”

Thats justy plainly wrong... The beauty of Bitcoin is that it is secured by everybody running bitcoind in their home or office, it doesnt need any physical security such as bunkers.
But an overkill place to store a paper wallet, maybe...
702  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: True ASIC-proof Attack-Resistant CryptoCurrency Design on: November 01, 2013, 09:43:08 PM
Many people can create a SHA hashing ASIC, the problem with a more complex POW is only a very select bunch of people might be able to create an ASIC, this would create a much higher risk of a 51% type attack. As the person who 'cracks' it first will unleash a massive amount of hashing power on the network.
703  Economy / Gambling / Re: We'd like to recognize Mooshire as an outstanding community member /s on: November 01, 2013, 07:25:31 AM
Well they certainly dont act like a big company, i wouldn't go anywhere near Satoshi Dice if this is how they run things.

It's interesting that people think we're "a big company"  Smiley

Guys, this wasn't a big deal. We thought it was funny to catch Mooshire saying those things, then PMing us to innocently ask about more promo. Did nobody else find that a little amusing?  Smiley We'll let it rest, we're not trying to upset people.

This was amusing and was worthy of a thread.
Its funny that people think a just because large corporations become sterile and inhuman, (often to legally protect themselves) other smaller operations must follow suit by choice, Bitcoin's pseduo anonymity and lack of legal recourse should mean we can keep be human longer.
704  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help I can't get into my blockchain wallet!!! REWARD .2 BTC on: October 29, 2013, 10:26:06 PM
I had this happen to me a few days back, I asked blockchain support to remove 2fa and then I logged in Successfully with just my password.  Perhaps their 2fa is getting corrupted somehow.

NB I used the "Reset Two Factor authentication" option on the login screen
705  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: October 25, 2013, 09:34:17 AM
Why are we going down?

I think there is a group of people who speculated in the last bubble and only check things like bitcoin over the weekend, and they see this as an opportunity to get out.
706  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Finally, a correct (endgame) difficulty calculator on: October 19, 2013, 09:02:38 PM
In winter miners make good heaters, so can run much less profitable if you also take into account reduced heating bills. As energy is so expensive in the UK, and it can get quite cold, the benefits are greater than a country where electricity is cheap and the climate is hot.
707  Other / Politics & Society / Re: people sending coins to the feds? on: October 17, 2013, 09:53:25 PM
Then maybe it will be a price drop?

Yap, stay tuned, if they drop all at once, there will be a mini crash.

Which exchange will they start the crash at, if its Gox, i should think they would hold it as compensation for the confiscated funds.  I would think they would find a private buyer, so it wont affect the mrket at all.
708  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [GUIDE] How to buy shares on Bitfunder on: October 15, 2013, 09:44:51 AM
How will you buy shares without moving bitcoins to your bitfunder account? Thats only possible through weexchange.
You can still direct deposit BTC to your weexchange account and transfer it over to bitfunder with no problems.

I don't think this is true.
From Bitfunder home page...

709  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: MTgox Account Got Hacked on: August 22, 2013, 07:08:28 PM
Sorry for your loss.
I must say Bitcoin has taught me some security lessons, now I use a password manager, my passwords are all different and use an neccesarily large number of characters.
Bitcoins are stored in paper wallets that have never seen the internet. I usd to think people like that were paranoid, but now I know better...
Just make sure it can't happen again.
710  Local / India / Re: Bank of Thailand attempts a move on: July 31, 2013, 08:22:09 PM
You gotta laugh... based on the fact there are no laws governing bitcoin, that makes it illegal...eh?

There was me thinking that everything is legal unless it is expressly made illegal by legislation. Question is can i legally eat jam donuts without permission from the government,

712  Economy / Services / Re: automated bot for BTC arbitrage on: June 24, 2013, 05:56:12 PM
Give up now, once the exchanges come back to normality the opportunity will be gone.
If you take account of exchange fees andtransfer fees the margins is small. Plus there is the stress of transfering large quanities of money around just to make a percent or two.
713  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: This baby was bought with bitcoins! on: June 13, 2013, 10:13:39 PM
UK researchers found that vegetarians had a lower overall cancer rate than meat eaters, but contrary to suggestions from other studies, they found a higher rate of colorectal cancer among the vegetarians than among the meat eaters.

714  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Is it possible to generate the same adress twice? on: June 13, 2013, 07:07:23 PM
Changing the  user data into a private key with sha256 can be done very quickly, however obtaining the public key from this private key requires ellipitical key multiplications.
This takes significantly longer. From my test using OpenSSL on a single cpu core on a reasonably fast machine, it can manage 1000 per second. So a 3 word pass phrase from a set of 10000 words will take 15 years on average to brute form.

The comparison I heard before was the chance of getting duplicate private keys by chance, is the same as getting struck by lightning every minute for the next 60 years.
715  Economy / Goods / Re: [[NEW]] - Physical Bitcoins - Only 0.2BTC - WorldWide Shipping! on: June 13, 2013, 06:50:29 PM
Nice looking coins. I think you mean to say, gold plated iron.
Are they preloaded with a removeable hologram, similar to  Casasicius coins?

717  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bitstamp Account hacked - $300 (Offer to thief for 3.3BTC) on: June 09, 2013, 07:32:15 PM
Do you know how you were hacked, trojan, brute force.... Etc.
In some ways this is more important than pursuing the loss. if you machine is still compromised it could happen again.

P.S. sorry for your loss.
718  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: June 05, 2013, 11:29:16 AM

Go on, crash, you know it makes sense...

But also consider what it means if it doesn't.  This is also a possibility.

stagnation?

If this type of trend line meant anything... if we extrapolate from the year 2000 using  this chart

http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=%5EFTSE&t=my&l=on&z=l&q=l&c=

the FTSE should be around 50,000.

Dear Mt. Gox Customers,

In order to comply with strict anti-money laundering regulations we are now requiring account verifications for all accounts performing non-Bitcoin currency deposits and withdrawals. Please see our statement for the full explanation:

https://mtgox.com/press_release_20130530.html

Best regards,

Mt. Gox Team

Not a great surprise really ... I would imagine anyone who does not want to be verified has been getting their cash off Gox or buying BTC post Dwolla

Interesting though is the use of the phrase 'at this time' wrt BTC withdrawals ... implication to me is that it is a possibility in the future

The are either very ignorant or they really think they are outside of the reach of the USG.  This means nothing, as it relates to USD, if you don't have a MSB license.  To my knowledge, they still don't.  Speculation:  Mt. Gox is going down.  This would be a devastating blow to the Bitcoin economy.  Just looking at the market depth, there is currently ~$18 million in BTC.  And looks like ~$16 million in fiat.  And that's just what's in limit orders.  No telling how much is just sitting in accounts.  Either way, if ~$34 million instantly vanished from the Bitcoin economy, it's going to leave a mark.  Hell, people can't even read a forum post without freaking out.  The panic selloff that would result at the remaining exchanges, would be tremendous.

Cheap coins anyone?   Grin Shocked

Coinseeker, Jeez, you really have a knack of turning something fairly innocuous into the end of the world. This in itself is fairly meaningless. It is inevitable that the fiat gateways into Bitcoin are going to be tightened up.
If you move large quantities of fiat around, governments want to know about it, simple. You can't escape it, and are not going to be able to escape it in the future.
720  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Buy on BTC-E and Sell on MTGOX on: May 25, 2013, 06:59:26 PM
No doubt Gox is the most trusted exchange, but why take unneccessary risk, once i've finished trading I go to blockchain.info, make a paper wallet, print it, and the address is then automatically added as a watch address to my wallet, i then transfer money from Gox to that new address.
When I want to trade again I scan the private key off the print out, (I do this with my phone as it is quicker) which changes the watch only address to a full address, then I transfer the money back to gox again.
Only takes a minute or two once you know what you are doing, but I can sleep easy knowing my money is safe. The only delay is waiting for the money to transfer into Gos when I want to trade again.
