461  Economy / Economics / Re: Will Bitcoin survive if the USD fails? on: June 27, 2013, 06:15:22 PM
short answer - of course it will. the world doesn't revolve around america.
But it does, sadly. Lots of places use the USD as a standard in a way. Oil is priced in it worldwide.

You think you're rich? The prince of Nigeria just sent me a letter, and he wants me to hide $20 million for him, and I can keep half!

Should I buy the Western Digital Media Player for 99 bucks? Who has it? You think it's worth getting?
I think the Roku is a better deal. Same price, lots of "channels" (apps), and supports MP4, MKV, MP3, JPEG, and other file formats.

No $2 is worth anything whatsoever, but the other things look pretty cool. What exactly is the point of gold plated silver out of curiosity?
465  Economy / Economics / Will Bitcoin survive if the USD fails? on: June 27, 2013, 01:19:18 PM
Many people seem to treat Bitcoin like silver or gold, that if the USD were to collapse, their wealth would be safe in bitcoin.

Metals and Bitcoin:
1. Derives value from rarity and difficulty to obtain more.

Metals:
1. Value universally understood (99/100 people will accept gold after a collapse, 1/100 will accept bitcoin).
2. Does not require a network to trade.

Bitcoins:
1. If stored correctly, impossible for thieves to steal, or governments to sieze.
2. No complex measurements to verify authenticity, purity, and volume.

Bitcoin may have some advantages over gold, but it also has some fundamental disadvantages (such as requiring a network to trade). For this reason, I would not be comfortable relying on Bitcoin for an economic collapse. What does everyone else think?
466  Economy / Invites & Accounts / Re: Buying BitcoinTalk Forum accounts - Sell your account for BTC! on: June 25, 2013, 11:46:45 PM
What do you plan to do with these accounts, out of curiosity?

1. He is not selling invites, he is selling (probably stolen) accounts.
2. He charges €40, obviously not worth it.

Do yourself a favor and don't bother inquiring.

Hi BitcoinTalk.
...
Is this based on posts or activity? I've been on here for months and have well over 100 posts, but my activity is low for some reason.

Its based upon posts. The new activity metric was added shortly after I created the original post.
In that case, sign me up! 175 posts.

I think I'm even worse than I was before now because of course I've got Bitcoins stored there, then there's all my personal information, work, NDA level work that someone could steal and of course the porn Tongue

I'd be happy to lend them a laptop or whatever that I didn't use often if I knew they were trustworthy though.
Make a guest user with a browser, lock them out of everything else.

I got a 1st Gen one now. What one should I get cuz its dying and I wanna buy a new one. Thanks for the help I appreicate it.
Listen to AliceWonder. Former Mac and iOS (iPod touch) user, now Linux and Android. Get a Nexus 4 and install a custom ROM to disable Google tracking and add extra features. It's only $300 and it better in every way.

- 8MP back camera (1080p video)
- Front camera (don't remember quality exactly, but better than either camera on the newest iPod touch.
- 4 processors (compare to one, and one of a lower quality at that, with Apple)
- 2GB RAM (compare to 256MB with Apple)
- 4.7 inch display of the same pixel density as Apple ("retina")
- No contract, carrier, etc, just buy and use like an iPod, or pop in a SIM card and use with AT&T, T-Mobile, or any other GSM carrier.

Not to mention how beautiful it is, and that it has wireless charging.

They're called "personal devices" for a reason. Even though I have nothing to hide most of the time, it freaks me out seeing someone else use my stuff. Full disk encryption for computers, secure passcode for phones.

477  Economy / Services / Re: anonymity/cryptography advice on: June 20, 2013, 01:49:55 PM
I am new to these concepts. I would like some advice on how to maintain anonymity online and the basics of different security protocols. Also, the strengths and weaknesses of different applications such as tor, bitmessage, tor chat, etc...
I am fairly intelligent, and learn fast so this shouldn't be too time consuming or frustrating! Most of my concerns are with tor, so I am looking for someone very well versed in this application.
Everything you could want to learn and more is freely available online.

When using TOR, the most important thing is not revealing yourself accidentally. Photos and documents store enough metadata to give away plenty of information about your computer, location, and personal info. Search "dox" on pastebin.com, and you will see what I mean. People who were trying to remain anomymous had their name, IP, facebook, email, address, phone number, parents and siblings names, photos, and more, all found by one small slip of information.

You should also read these links:
https://www.torproject.org/download/download-easy.html.en#warning
http://mashable.com/2007/07/16/anonymous-coward/
http://photographylife.com/how-to-delete-exif-data

Bottom line: Use disposable emails, phone numbers, and fake names and addresses, erase all file metadata, avoid browser plugins except for NoScript and HTTPS everywhere.

It can suck when you're forced to do something you don't want to do because you accepted money for a job, but you just have to man up and knock it out so you can move on. The key is not getting emotionally attached to your work and giving the customer what they want so they are happy. You might have to do things differently than you normally would or even cut corners, but it's all worth it when both customer and designer are satisfied with the outcome.

If you're an artist more than a businessman then it will be tough. People won't want to hire you if you're unpleasant to work with or always arguing. They want to give a direction and see it come to fruition through your efforts. The best you can hope for is creating your own website or blog and making money from it or selling finished websites on Flippa.

There's got to be some way to sugar-coat "I'm the one with 20 years of design experience, we should really do it this way".
