281  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Tokens (Altcoins) / Re: Bitshares - BTS - Worlds Fastest Most Used Crypto, Tokens, and DEX [unofficial] on: June 05, 2017, 11:02:45 AM
What is the major difference between the original Ann and this one? Are you going to include any other important function about the Bit shares.
I would like to know more about it because I am a big fan o the bit shares who is holding the coins very long.

Original ann only had 7 words, a link to github, and that's it Smiley I thought it would be easier to search for stuff here.

Click around on the links here and if you can't find what you want join us on telegram chat linked above  Grin

Good move with the new thread. Being THE most important crypto forum on the internet, it's not to be treated casually.

Or is there anyone who still hasn't noticed that BCT is always at the top of any Google search done?  Grin

This is without a doubt one of the major information gateways to crypto.

Yeah without something like this, the information is way too scattered around for people to figure out whatever they want to know.  Cheesy
283  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SWARM CITY: First Truly Decentralized Peer To Peer Sharing Economy on: June 05, 2017, 09:43:17 AM
Noticed this on TokenCard. Hrmm.... low key ethereum project. I understand this was originally part of Arcade.City ICO.
Undervalued if this truly is a decentralized Craigslist / Uber.

I think some people greatly underestimate how many people look up projects on their announcement threads. I absolutely hate going to coin websites, I want to see all info in one single post all in one place. That first post needs so much work.

This thread was "Read 10222 times" and all they saw is some text that looks like 1 minute of work and probably just moved on. If they update it, it would be great.

Types of coins & tokens
[info]
Bitshares cryptocurrency

a trustless base coin unit used for blockchain consensus incentives
i.e. BTS
Market Pegged Assets "MPA"

Asset whose value is meant to track the value of an arbitrary asset via witness feeds, collateral, settlement.
Smartcoins w/ "bit" at start of name are created by the committee, use witness fed price feeds, thus trustless.
e.g. bitUSD, bitCNY, bitRUBLE, bitSILVER, bitGOLD, bitBTC, bitEUR,  bitJPY, bitMXN, bitGBP

User Issued Assets "UIA"

user created custom token registered on the platform for any purpose
e.g. CVCOIN, open.BTC, WHALESHARE, SPIES
Exchange Backed Assets "EBA"

UIA that serves as "I owe you" "IOU" to withdraw some amount from trusted gateway
e.g. open.BTC, open.USD
Privatized Bit-Assets

A flexible mixture between UIA and MPA that allows 3rd parties to create their own customized MPAs
e.g. BTWTY, HERO
Fee Backed Assets "FBA"

portion of generated fees is distributed to asset holders
e.g. STEALTH
Prediction Market Asset

an MPA that can be settled for 0x or 1x of collateral based on outcome of an event
e.g. ETFBTC

Wallets, web wallets, phone wallets, nodes

(all clients operate on same orderbooks & blockchain, but can be different in layouts)
Common security advice: (1) not to use wallets without source & review, (2) web-wallets susceptible to domain hijack attacks,
(3) read how to avoid phishing attacks, (4) if you lose or accidentally share your private key (i.e. password) you lose all your money

FAQ

What is Bitshares?
DPoS graphene blockchain built with a native cryptocurrency, custom tokens, built-in decentralized exchange, and more.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSgsbBTxNfo
How do I create an account/sign-up/register?
Use one of the wallets. For example: reference wallet instructions.
How do I stake coins?
Bitshares is not typical PoS blockchain where anyone can produce "mine" blocks. In DPoS anyone can
validate blocks, but producing and corresponding block reward is limited to peer reviewed
witnesses anyone with bitshares can vote for or vote against by removing votes or voting for others.
Some block producers may choose to reward voters with portion of income but it's not common.
What's the difference between openledger and bitshares?
Bitshares is the blockchain with bts, tokens, the DEX, and the orderbooks. Openledger company does several things
on top of bitshares, like provide one of several user interfaces, provides a gateway to external blockchains,
and help build some projects on top of bitshares. They even have their own FAQ.
All typical user interfaces to bts blockchain like openledger.io use same blockchain and thus same order books and accounts.
Is bitshares a cryptocurrency or a decentralized exchange or a decentralized organization?
It's the name of a blockchain & name of base currency used for incentives.
The bitshares blockchain just happens to have a native integrated decentralized exchange.
The blockchain also happens to have the very first DAO (they called DAC originally) that runs it.
What do you use BTS for? What does it do?
    1. Approval voting weight in the worlds first DAO/DAC (decentralized autonomous organization/corporation)
2. Used to fund block producers (witnesses) by the blockchain to secure it.
3. Used to fund workers (people who want to work for blockchain & get voted in).
4. Transaction or action fees. However, fee pools allow some fees to be paid in other coins.
5. Used as collateral for creating pegged tokens like bitUSD, also used for margin trading.
Someone said bitshares/dpos is centralized
or has master nodes?
Bitshares is designed to be extremely decentralized & attempts to reduce influence of wealth concentration.
The approach & tech metrics are extremely different from others causing confusion and difficulty in comparisons.
There are almost no similarities between "master nodes" and block producers (witnesses) in bitshares/dpos.
1. Every account with BTS (37641 @ 2017-10-19) can vote and influence the blockchain either directly
or indirectly by conditionally selecting or delegating to another while they best represent them.
This is more than almost all blockchains have full nodes and, by # of participants, much more decentralized.
Barrier to entry for decentralized participation is lower so entry of enormous numbers of bts holders is easier.
Every part of the blockchain (each block producing witnesses, each worker, committee member, proxy,
and their choice for fees, incentives like rewards or punishments, upgrades via forks, validation, security)
is controlled by holders of bts, and spread, i.e. decentralized, across many accounts.
2. Approval voting makes it very difficult for large stake holder to take over the system.
3. Each holder delegating security enforcement to ~20 block producers is more decentralized than to typical far fewer dominant mining/staking pools.
Full nodes still have validation importance and additional formalized votes are quantifiable and clear resulting in effective blockchain governance.
Instead of allowing those holding 51% of weight (or less if lucky) to attack, 2/3 witnesses + 1 required for a fork.
Additionally their influence is forced to be equal in weight reducing wealth (equipment or stake) influence (attempt at breaking Pareto principle).
Witnesses elected not by wealth but by merit/performance and are under continuous peer-review.
Becoming a prospective witness or worker is permissionless for entry.
4. Stake at risk if voted out is vested salary paid to witnesses over potentially unlimited amount of time in future.
Instead of producers competing and diluting each others profit, good compensation makes bribing them expensive.
5. Bitshares was fairly distributed via PoW and wide airdrops (never sold from a liquid pool) for maximum decentralization.
Fair and wide permissionless low-entry distribution avoids security flaws with bad distributions like via standard ICO's.
Free market trade of bts, including via built-in decentralized exchange, punishes stake grab attempts with high prices.

However it's possible fee pool is temporarily empty or you don't have enough
and might get an error message, so often safest to use BTS you are sure you have
I tried sending bts but got an error, why?
It's likely you didn't have enough left for fees, try sending a little less. Fees can be paid in several currencies

Does trading cost fees?
Sometimes. Unfilled orders, when canceled, receive a 100% refund on fees.
Partially filled orders are not eligible for a refund.
Claim refund on vesting page.
Fees allow decentralized funding of development in the DAC: https://cryptofresh.com/reserve

Tips and Tricks

Order books look thin? Place limit orders and let bots fill your position or find a more liquid pair. Soft pairs by volume on the right to help.

You can find a market for any 2 coins on bitshares blockchain. Simply replace names in the URL e.g. ".../USD_CNY" to names of assets you want separated by "_".
The bit* trustless assets (only the committee can create) are abbreviated: bitUSD=>"USD" bitCNY=>"CNY" bitBTC=>"BTC" and BTS is just "BTS"
IOU assets from gateways are just written out in full: "OPEN.BTC_OPEN.USD" "OPEN.WAVES_BTS" "RUDEX.PPY_USD"

It took several years before bitcoin reached the need for 7tps, see https://blockchain.info/charts/n-transactions?timespan=all In fact, during the first 3 years it never needed more than 0.1tps (0.1tps = 8640 transactions per day). It is the same with HEAT, there is not a need for 7tps right now, but it can already do 7tps. HEAT uses memory-mapped files and has reached 1000tps and more in tests in local networks. What slows it down in a network spanning large geographical regions (satellite communication) is the peer-to-peer communication, but that bottleneck can be improved as the need for higher tps arises (always on connections, better protocol, ...). I am confident that the devs will deliver according to the original whitepaper, which is here: http://heatledger.com/HEATWhitepaper.pdf A public roadmap will be published soon (within a week according to information from Slack channel) and that should hopefully clarify the priorities in the coming months.

Isn't all the instability from having so many validators resulting in orphaned blocks and forks? Once leasing is enabled, using lessons from dpos like bts, no reason not to get much much faster by delegating/leasing your stake & vote.

Maybe we ask devs to post an official or unofficial bitshares thread

It's nonsense for waves to be higher than bitshares as literally all of their expected features we already have right now, and waves has centralized matching https://i.imgur.com/Nqz6CaD.png

Just gotta show people that image above as clearly not enough people know while bitshares is killing it https://twitter.com/theapptrade/status/867097673521922049

what is bitUSD or bitEuro ? its like real usd or euro in balance in wallet ?
And what is open.Steem or open.ETH or open.Lisk ? its this coins on market platform ? If I buy open.LISK I can send it to my Lisk wallet as normal Lisk because I bought Lisk ? but if yes why they have name "open.X" ?
I have some BTS but never traded but it looks very nice.

open.eth is asset on bts chain, provided by openledger, much like polo.eth is the item you trade on poloniex instead of real coins. by sending eth to bts openledger gateway, it converts it authomatically to open.eth and when you withdraw you get eth. the bots on the dex get price from it seems poloniex and fill orders pretty well.

It's a trustless smartcoin that keeps a value of 1 USD or 1 EUR by locking up that amount of BTS into a smart contract and adjusts automatically as BTS price varies. It doesn't rely on a central bank like USDT so won't have the issues like USDT had with Finex. This allows them to always return to $1 range. bitCNY is one of the most used smartcoins there now due to popularity in china.

Does anyone else think Dan Larimer might be the best blockchain dev in the world?

confirmed

Waves is going through the top, heat is a direct competitor as far as I know. Can someone tell me what the main differences are? In which way is heat superior (I know of microservices atleast) and what will be the plan to catch up with waves?

I want to really like this coin but I can't get past the scam assets on the exchange. Plus, I'm more interested in coins as scalable currencies and would be perfectly happy if they focused on that aspect of the coin and ditched their exchange completely, while trying to get on better exchanges.

Maybe they have a long term vision that I haven't fully researched yet and don't care about merely pumping the coin though. Good name, promising technology....

They can't control what people name their assets. All true decentralized exchanges have this.  It's up to you to check what the names should be. If the company controls what names assets can use, it's not decentralized. Waves also isn't that decentralized - they have centralized trading matching server which is easy attack/ddos target. Additionally waves relies on gateways to switch to placeholder assets on chain.

Heat was one of the first to attempt to do something different by giving users native direct asset exchange (it's obviously not live yet, so not different at the moment)

DIRECT CRYPTO TRADING

Because the HEAT client hosts client side real crypto, integrated to the HEAT blockchain asset exchange through built-in invisible gateway, users can trade cryptocurrencies right from their wallet on p2p orderbooks without going through an exchange. This means that once your trade for ie. BTC/ETH goes through, you can use the BTC or ETH as you do normally. Bye bye withdrawal delays! Welcome multicurrency client and native direct exchange!

To be fair, Bitshares 2.0 is fast, very fast. I recently made an account there but had to watch a few Youtube videos to get started. It is very complicated. But there is a faucet to pay the fees for a newly created account

The referral program and layout are confusing. It has too much. The website doesn't fit my laptop screen and many times the page froze on me. Both openledger and bitshares. It's a shame that Dan left the project before seeing it take off.

1. it takes 2 clicks to create an account, must be really hard
2. you don't need to find any faucet at all
3. you can pay tx fees in any currency traded on the dex
4. it's almost 10x faster than waves
5. it's decentralized while waves is centralized so easy to take down waves order matching
6. the layout is identical to poloniex so maybe you didn't want to use a dex
7. it looks and works exactly like every top quality exchange while waves looks like someone's first hello world app with unusable exchange.
8. "It has too much." is not criticism
9. Decentralized governance/funding platform inside over centralized waves funding

10. I have waves. I am just disappoint it has no new features, but hard to outperform perfection I suppose.

Don't let a small exchange pump on zero tech get to your head, have to be pushing for better features, not just wasting all ico funding on ads.

I admit that I fell over laughing at the BitShares guy; really, you want to compare Waves to BitShares?  He might be right that BitShares has had more time, but look at where Waves already is with less time.  Waves is an interesting crowdfunding platform and it will be fun to watch how it evolves in time.

Also, once glance at the history of bitUSD and bitGold and their "pegged assets" are absolute joke.  Kind of like Steem Dollars; can't seem to actually be $1!

Waves is now featured on what cryptocurrencies pay a dividend.

And yet they they always return to $1 or w/e in trust-less manner because it's based on smart contract, unlike typical centralized assets like tether on centralized exchanges like waves. There's zero technical reasons to ever use waves over bitshares for any reason in any context. The only reason it's going up is pump team is good, no way to short it on bittrex, and instead of focusing on tech you focus on putting ads everywhere.

So when do you guys get any new tech that isn't years behind competition?

No good reason to use waves over bts.

Bts has the only trustless pegged currencies, decentralized dex with margin, many options for gateways for 6 different fiat currencies and so on

Also since we can't be checking this thread for updates every post as there are a lot of random posts,

Can you please announce it on your twitter?

It's best way to get a notification for major updates from crypto projects. I have yours set to alert me.

Thanks.

I saw at heatpool that someday there will be leasing available? That would probably be very helpful for stability to reduce # of validators. Is that coming up on timeline?

Why is this pumping, they literally said they are centralized. We do not need another centralized exchange. Oh the wallet is decentralized. How innovative. Trading is centralized.
