I'd really like to see this go ahead. It's a huge improvment on Bitcoin and Litecoin - and the altcoins are barely worth a mention...

I check out the forum - it is almost completely spam. Install some anti-spam stuff!
Hey, yes, we're in the process of getting a new forum up. Initially there was some good activity on the forum, but it's a bit quiet right now. Before we crowdfund the development, we'll make sure all the infrastructure is ready to get it going, including the forum. For now the Wiki is a good place to put up some ideas if you want, and that will be around with spam management for good. Smiley Sorry about the spam! There's been a lot around lately.

I haven't gone through the specs of the netcoin but the idea to involve democracy in a coin is utterly idiotic. Democracy simply doesn't work in society and won't work in a coin.

http://beyonddemocracy.net/
That's an interesting perspective. Have you thought about how we could incorporate some of the ideas from the material you posted? I would be very open to listen to what you have in mind. Makes me think about the old Churchill quote: "It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried".

Should we have the white paper in the wiki as well?
That's a good idea. I'll try and get a raw data version from TacoTime and put it up in sections. New version is coming too.
424  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MC2 ("Netcoin"): A cryptocurrency based on a hybrid PoW/PoS system on: June 08, 2013, 11:50:20 AM

Thanks, cunicula! You've put some interesting material up. Just in case anyone is wondering, there's stuff happening in the background to set up our crowdfunding model, prepare job postings for developers, and make final theoretical additions/changes to the whitepaper. TacoTime's just been a little swamped lately, but we'll keep pushing the dream forward! Wink
425  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MC2 ("Netcoin"): A cryptocurrency based on a hybrid PoW/PoS system on: June 02, 2013, 09:37:04 PM
Do we have an estimate for the release of this coin yet?
TacoTime said earlier that he wants to make a few changes to the paper and get it finalised, after which he'll start assembling the dev team.

These ideas are all really good and interesting. I would recommend that people write up their ideas in a structured form that others can easily understand, find, and compare against other ideas. Develop them into proper models. If you believe in your idea, write it up in a form that is suitable for peer-review. Judging by the first post, I think the idea was to get feedback on the coin itself, mostly technical to establish whether it is a valid proposition. Most of what has been posted here is auxiliary to that (services, conglomerates, etc.), and really warrant a different platform altogether. It's getting really confusing finding the technical discussion about the coin amidst all of this! So I think compact it into something people can digest and put it in the Netcoin Wiki in an organised way under an appropriate section. That would be my suggestion anyway!

Just looked at the Wiki and it's a great job so far!

I'm wondering in addition to those features mentioned, are there any other features that were in the thread that should be included but were neglected in the Wiki?

When Netcoin is launched, I want it to be unanimously seen as being superior to Bitcoin unlike the current Litecoin vs Bitcoin debates.

I want to get in touch with Meni Rosenfeld about his ideas on a hopping-proof method, which was touched on briefly here. I also want to get in touch with coblee about the model they followed for Litecoin's release. I think there's a lot of good information to be had out of a what-why-how approach to these issues and what Netcoin can learn from them.

Hey everyone, Wiki is up! Sorry if it's a bit crude, we're still looking at extensions. Any recommendations are welcome!

Looks good, this was much, much needed ... and will contribute to the muchness of NTC!  Grin

I added some information about democratic moderation to the main page, which I think captures the essence of what you added. I'm trying to mirror TacoTime's original words verbatim as much as I can, until he has some free time to tell me what I got wrong. Tongue

Great. I began adding some pages. They are works in progress, so pardon the mess.

I hope this resource can achieve a broad scope useful to the entire altcoin community.

Hopefully this will contribute to Netcoin's intellectual credibility.

Great contribution! I think the what-why-how model works really well for what you've put up. I added some formatting for structure purposes to fill the blanks later. Really great stuff to read! Obviously we'd have to do a lot of editing to get the message right, but it's looking good so far.

I recommend you give yourself a pat on the back, for a job wel done, sir Smiley It looks very nice.

Haha, well thank you. That's very kind. Smiley I would have to extend that to the MediaWiki people and the Cavendish-MW skin! I hope it serves us well.

Is the wiki ready yet?

I'll ask xweb to set it up.

Working with him on it right now. It'll be pretty bare bones, but we'll continue improving on it. Sorry, thought I posted that we were!
433  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MC2 ("Netcoin"): A cryptocurrency based on a hybrid PoW/PoS system on: May 29, 2013, 05:19:23 PM

I would shy away from having anything "closed" in this project.. as soon as you do that, you alienate everyone that isn't "in the club" and that's the last thing this coin needs.

Agreed. NetCoin needs to be open source from the start I believe, otherwise it will lack legitimacy. I believe as well that a Netcoin clone would be seen through by the community, with people gravitating to the "real deal" because of it's innovator advantage and strong development community.

From my very limited technical understanding, I believe there are security concerns with having it completely open source from the very beginning. I might be wrong though. I do believe it was elaborated on in this thread, but I'm too dumb to try and explain it. The way I look at it is that someone came on here and produced a whitepaper full of real improvements to advance the current state of the field. There's been peer-review, and that speaks to how they operate in a huge way. There's been a surprising lack of openness in the crypto-community with all the scams going around. Netcoin is different in that way. The ideas in this coin are some of the necessary advancements to strengthen cryptocurrency as a whole.

I do know that TacoTime completely supports open source from what I've read here. I also know that there are special considerations that one must take even with open source projects. We need to accept that the crypto-community has a malicious streak, and there are people that will attack and seek to destroy the things others have built very openly. If keeping it secure in the developer's hands until we are strong, then that's reasonable to me. At the end of the day, it's simple. If a coin screws everyone over, people won't mine it. It comes back to the point on peer-review. Anyone who opens an idea like that is going to take into consideration the security of the project and balance it with its openness, regardless of how that works from a temporal stance. I say bravo and forward to the new world!
434  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MC2 ("Netcoin"): A cryptocurrency based on a hybrid PoW/PoS system on: May 29, 2013, 02:32:27 PM
If you look back at the earliest posts in this thread, you'll see that TacoTime spoke about a method involving encrypting the release and waiting a few weeks so that it is well distributed before giving out the password. That way everyone would start mining at the same time. One of the more recent posts in this thread by coblee details the methodology Litecoin pursued as another novel way to ensure the fairness of a coin's release. Having a mining "syndicate" prior to release that is somehow officially embedded in the project basically ends up excluding people from the fairness of the early vision.

If people get turned off by the ideas posted here, don't be concerned by what you read. I haven't known TacoTime for very long, but from what he has said in this thread I believe he is trustworthy and he has pledged his intent very early on to make the release of Netcoin as fair as humanly possible.

For what it's worth, I'm working with xweb (the guy who's hosting all of our stuff) to set up an account specifically for Netcoin. We'll have a proper site, Wiki, forum, etc. soon. Thought I'd mention it here in case people go out and duplicate stuff that's already being worked on in the background. I'll report back when we have something.

Hey everyone, I'm talking to xwebnetwork over at the forum initially set up for Netcoin. Would I be able to ask what your thoughts are on the forum design at netcoin.io/forum? We're looking at combining resources to create a more concentrated effort. There is potential to migrate the data if people feel they prefer one or the other. Please let me know what you think!

Very cool design! Can it do full width?

Thanks! Yes, that should be possible. I'll look into it! By the way, the point of this exercise is the evaluate whether it is worthwhile to switch to something like that given that we'll have to have a public face and all. Obviously we can expand on the format as well. Right now it seems Netcoin consists of development and community components. Both of which have announcements and discussions respectively. So it's a pretty simple way to organise all that.

Why not just a mailing list?

We could do that too. I think the issue is not a lot of people are familiar with mailing lists. My belief is that you want to create an environment that can cater to many needs.

When will be ready ?

The author and his team will pre-mine all of coins before releasing it to you  Grin

Lol, Taco is like the most aboveboard guy I've met in crypto. He detailed a novel release plan on one of the first two pages when asked about this. I don't think the crypto community can handle the level of honesty and transparency Netcoin's release could potentially entail. We might even all reach nirvana collectively with the its release.

For those who can't read and don't care to understand digicoin's sarcasm: There is no pre-mine.

When will be ready ?

It's still in the theoretical stages. There are still some issues with the paper. If you know some C/C++ you could implement some! Grin
