41  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tails / Bitcoin-QT / Cold Storage on: February 28, 2014, 10:40:23 PM
It depends if cold storage requires your private keys to never have existed on a online computer

That's my definition of cold storage at least. Online is the perogative.
42  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Tails / Bitcoin-QT / Cold Storage on: February 28, 2014, 10:39:08 PM
+1 to Tails.

Better though to download an offline copy of bitaddress.org (after verifying it, of course) and do your paper wallets there. You can use bitcoin-qt, but that adds unnecessary complexity.

If you're printing, also look into BIP38. Do you trust your printer?

Still need an escrow? I only have intermittent internet access but will try to get things done.

If that is a concern, there are other trusted members as others have mentioned. The devs should also be coming online soon.

Again my policy is: no fees, no insurance offered, donations appreciated.

Can we please get the likes of XNOVA, PhantomPhreak, Busoni, Prophetx, biggestfish, or any other noteable community members to consult with linkandzelda concerning adding Counterparty (XCP) to cryptorush.in ?

It's almost certain that we will win the voting which is over in about 9 hours from the time of this post, however if linkandzelda is not able to figure out how to add it, he will have to refund us our vote money -____-

I've solicited suggestions from busoni re. implementation documentation. They have been sent to the developers. In any case, the devs are willing to help with any of the technical details.

Good news, everyone!

The hacker (a bit of a misnomer, as he has pointed out) returned 50 BTC, and I have just distributed it to affected users. Looks like the other 65 will be sent, too.

Busoni

Once you get back all 115 BTC and you have distributed them to the affected account holders, the situation will hopefully be completely remedied. I understand that the withdrawn 7000 XCP have been mitigated by the 12 BTC you received from the developers.

The commission of 2.5% that you have levied to raise 115 btc should ideally go to the bugs and security bounties now. You should have had a volume of at least 200 BTC since you raised the commission so I am guessing approximately 10 btc raised so far. Will you please consider donating these to the bounty?

I thank the person returning all the coins back to you and I hope the devs are able to involve him as an external security auditor as originally intended by them before he went AWOL

Last I heard the 12 BTC were meant for the hacker, as well as a "security consultant" position. I do agree additional money from donations and whatnot since then should also go to the security bounty, which should be paid at the dev's discretion.

As described in the chatlog, steps to implement stricter validation are always appreciated, given especially the use of multisig. Similar validation will also have to be done when OP_RETURN is finally implemented, as that has only been on testnet so far.

Wow, he just sent the remaining amount. Wow, I did not expect that.

Give the guy his bounty, please.

+1

Ideally, also pay for some real internet access for the guy, if possible. Prepaid cards?

"How to import(bring back into an online wallet) offline bitcoin for use in commerce:
IMPORTANT: WHEN IMPORTING FROM A PAPER OFFLINE WALLET, YOU MUST IMPORT THE ENTIRE AMOUNT OF THE OFFLINE WALLET. IMPORTING A FRACTION OF IT WILL CAUSE THE REMAINING BALANCE TO BE LOST FOREVER."

cant stress this enough.

Into bitcoin-qt.

Fortunately other clients (including blockchain.info) have a more sensible implementation. But to stress - read and understand how your client works.

In any case, you should import the full amount because it's not paper anymore once the private key hits an online system.

Question: Wuala did something like this a while back, but has since stopped after being acquired by Lacie (and becoming just another dropbox clone in the process). Are there any similar existential risks for this project?
49  Economy / Economics / Re: [ECONOMICS 101] The "You Have Two Cows" Case study on: February 24, 2014, 04:18:41 AM
GOX

You gave your two cows to a rancher
Someone comes in to steal 1, 2, or none of the cows (you don't know)
The rancher blames the thief for stealing his cows, but says you still have two cows
You go retrieve your cows, and find an empty field. The rancher also moved.
You call the rancher, who says your cows are still there
Someone is standing outside selling his cow for two of your "cows".

In beta until June 2014, when it'll no longer be free (apparently)
51  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Bitcoin-qt change address implementation specifics on: February 23, 2014, 09:31:17 PM
Hi,

I tried googling, but couldn't find the answer to this.

What is the specific pool of change addresses that bitcoin-qt chooses to send to?

Let's say that I have a population of addresses in my wallet of the following types:
1. Manually generated by "create new address"
2. Automatically generated, but hidden as a change address (used before)
3. Automatically generated, but hidden as a change address (unused)
4. Manually imported via importprivkey that are knowingly insecure (let's say this is a public paper wallet for example's sake)

Is there a chance of change going into any addresses of type (4)? If so, is there a way to remove that possibility from occuring?
52  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: February 23, 2014, 05:38:35 AM
busoni and poloniex are scam?

No, they aren't. The Counterparty protocol was hacked. Read the last 30 pages before you call people scammers.

This is ridiculous!

Check the aftermath on the github develop branch. As a result the project's added a pretty insane level of validation to patch the bug in question, as well as address all sorts of other theoretical attacks. Failure is what makes success...

Don't mind the increased fees; the more that pushes people to use the DEX and/or increases adoption by other exchanges (competition), the better.

Alright, let's do this.

Put on the trades people :p

55  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty Protocol, Client and Coin (built on Bitcoin) - Official on: February 22, 2014, 09:19:57 PM
thx for your reply. I would do that but I would prefer to have the option to send amounts to exchanges / forum buyers for trading as well... which would be the way to go here? I installed the client from xnova from his github but that doesnt work (see above). I would go with the client from Jahbit but dont know if this is safe in terms of the bug... that probably are stupid questions. I just dont have the time to go through the whole thread...

Honestly easiest right now is to send the donation via Jimhsu, and then you can figure out the web wallet / GUI once you have more time.  These products are both brand new in last few days and so I might suggest you wait a few weeks until they are bug tested and hardened before you hold your XCP in them.

being able to trade and donating are equally important to me right now. So would be nice if someone could help to answer the questions I put up (is the Jahbit client safe in terms of the bug and is this the easiest way to send xcp?). thx!

Yes, the JahPowerBit client is perfectly functional. In fact, I use it to do the sends due to ease of use compared to CLI.

However I'm still open to handling any send requests to whatever addresses you want, free of charge. Donations appreciated of course.

Just a friendly reminder that even billion dollar companies have critical security flaws:

Apple security flaw could allow hackers to beat encryption

I agree the best would be busoni contacting them privately asking them to give it back. But again these people were not hackers just traders. The

fact that they withdrew immediately does not mean they knew something was wrong. Some of them maybe, but a lot of people myself included like

to withdraw immediately from CENTRALIZED exchanges. BTW I am not one of those who bought at .002. I actually have over 300 xcp stuck

on poloniex but that doesn't mean I think its right to publish private account info on a public forum. Are you 19 years old? I am not meaning that

as a put down. It's either that or you have a lot stuck on poloniex which I feel sorry if you do but you will get it back. i'm thankful I only put tiny

amount on poloniex. I only put what I could afford to lose.

+1, a lot of people simply can't keep track of these forums, and there is no indication on poloniex.com on the status of XCP.

BTW, I really have to recommend JahPowerBit's GUI client. Saves a tremendous amount of typing and verifying when dealing with complex transactions.

Hi,

I just handled flayway's donation to the bug bounty fund. I'll be happy to handle donations for other people who don't have counterpartyd running as well.

Hi Jimhsu,

I just sent you my private key. Please send 10% of the balance of my account to the Donation Address.

Processed, thanks for donating!

To others - please don't send keys in PMs. Instead message me for a BM address.
