Great suggestions guys, As I will be living in dorms soon I have decided to still invest some of the is money into a mining rig as well as doubling down on investments in some alts you have mentioned. I have extended my amount  of available funds to $2500.

I can create mining rig of 2x7970 for $1200(or $1320 for 2x280x). The only problem it will have to be an enclosed rig in a case though. Is it okay temperature wise to do this? 2x 7970 in 1 case? This should provide 1500/hs which hopefully should see some roi in 3 months although it could be a bit iffy depending. Also would the noise by a problem sleeping in the same room?

The rest of my money I will be investing in some alt coins. PPC-40% and WDC-%25 potentially. 20% speculation( maybe some pos coins) I will be moving out of my WDC position at some point in the next few months after some roi. So far thats all I've worked out but to be honest Im so open to any ideas you guys have I will be keeping an eye out for some more ideas.

Thanks so much and please keep the ideas and advice coming

If you must have a case buy full size. Rosewill makes great cases with lots of fans A++ ventilation.

Yeah WDC scares me.

Read through this: http://cryptosource.org/good-buys-and-coins-to-avoid-how-daily-coin-maintenance-costs-should-factor-into-your-investment-decisions/ and look at the comments too. Important considerations in the short and medium term. I personally have invested in new coins this week based on the criteria of (fewest coins entering the market x per coin cost) and related it to the market cap of coins.

"5 coins with a percent daily maintenance less than Bitcoin: CGB (.024%), IFC (.020%), DVC (.014%), ZET (.0074%), and with the lowest percent daily maintenance, QRK (0.0049%)."

Lot's of people suggesting Litecoin here, but I'm not so sure. It's whole reason for being is that it uses scrypt so it's ASIC resistant, but new scrypt ASICs are on the way. It's a major risk that miners will desert this coin. Even doge has more hashing power than Litecoin, so it's a coin in decline IMO.

Also, quark was massively pre-mined. A lot of people don't like that. It got pumped by Max Keiser, but has declined since then.

Here's a good article on investing, although I don't agree with their top 5. All are pretty risky. http://cryptosource.org/good-buys-and-coins-to-avoid-how-daily-coin-maintenance-costs-should-factor-into-your-investment-decisions/

Poster above said bitcoin and bullion (gold and silver). I agree with that. Gamble on a few coins you like, but be aware it's a gamble. You could lose.

My honest opinion why the StarTrek coins should seriously be looked at:

Just get 0.1 BTC worth at Scifi-ex.com, very little risk, big potential upside.

You really scared of Doge OP??  Definitely the smartest investment, are you trying to day trade and buy and sell or are you trying to buy some coin then hodl for a while?  For long term, Doge is #1 at the moment.

as was already suggested though, Its definitely a smarter investment to get a badass mining rig!  There is still tons of speculation on ASICs for scrypt, I have heard people say they can change a part of the code in the coin to where it would be ASIC resistant, ALSO there is other algorithms like scrypt jane that you can use if there are gnarly ASICs to eventually enter the market.  Investing in a GPU mining rig is the smartest option IMO.

The Jesuits = The Money Changers - Executive order 11110, Green Hilton Memorial Agreement, Global collateral accounts.. The US Treasury needs to print United States Notes backed by any physical assets; unlike this debt tool 'federal reserve note' printed by a private central bank that is 100% unconstitutional

You sound like you only like BTC. You have to look at cryptos if you want high reward (with high risk) returns.

I'm not too sure when scrypt ASICs are coming out, but you're right I've heard it'll be pretty soon.

You're completely wrong on Quark. One reason I recommend it is because its a CPU-mined coin, ASICs will never be worth using to mine it. It's in an inflationary stage and thats why the article you linked says its a 'strong buy.'  It was not pre-mined either. If you want, you can look up the block schedule, and you can look at the announcement thread on this site posted the day of the genesis block

Yep, sorry, mistake there. I meant instamined, rather than pre-mined. Not much difference in the long run.

Definite difference. The basics of crypto launches are pretty complicated, but an premine = developer mines all the coins himself before launch. An instamine = coin is mostly mined during an undefined by relatively short time period. The difference is that the developer isn't scamming everyone when the coin rewards early adopters more than others. And considering the exchange volume during this high coin production time, I think Quark has a perfectly fine distribution that has set itself up for growth.

Yeh, I appreciate the differences, but from what I recall the distribution is still fairly skewed. It's not like the dev even invented the hashing algo and deserves the coins (unlike, say Satoshi). Quark has a lot of people who like it, and a lot who don't. That's not an ideal investment environment for me. Something, like vertcoin, which is unique and doesn't have bad feelings around it, is probably a better option.

Unjustified bad feelings --> undervalued stocks or in this case crypto-currencies. At least for me, the idea that simply refuting the misinformation would probably lead to a higher coin price was enticing.

Note: I bought in at .07 mBTC, we're at .125 now so I'm somewhat biased.

Invest in GoldCoin - Gld

Their are a few advantages GoldCoin has over other coins expect a terrific name.

1) Faster transaction than Bitcoin
2) unique 51% defense system to reduce attacks on network.
3) A very active dev. team thats constantly standby to intervene when a technical issue occurs.
