Check out the "ipominer.com" pool. It mines the new(ish) & profitable coins, and can help you gain a stake before the 'dump' phase that often occurs. Hell, I've even made profits by renting x11 rigs and putting them on there, then selling the coins.
Personally, I don't have the time to dedicate to following the most profitable coins to mine (though I wish I could). So I tend to let the pools do the work in that aspect. I'm a "long-term bull" for cryptocurrency, so I rarely look at profit in cryptos the same way I do with other investments.

Do ROI math. A lot of it will come down to if you have cheap electricity. Personally I like hardware over cloud. But cloud is becoming more popular.

Bitcoin mining is extremely resource hungry and requires the use of increasingly powerful computational systems to maintain it's network. Based on my experiences, you will gain more bitcoin by trading than mining

I know a guy who just quit mining with a million dollars! .... he started out with 10 million But seriously, it's tough, try looking in your local market for used antminers etc, at 50c/gigahash or so, they mayyyyy turn profitable, especially if you're in the northern hemisphere and can displace heating use for the next few months. if that true, those are the guy who destroy the mining experience, they always want more lol 10M on topic, i think there is some x11 a little profitable, or take a look at burst, at less it use much less energy, basically free

What is worth mining still? Is bitcoin still worth mining for if your just starting out? Any recommendations?
Mining itself is unprofitable. A better decsion would be to buy and hold.

as far as i found out you should forget about solo mining. also there are a crap loads of cloud mining sites out there which is hard to trust them. the famous ones have high maintenance fee so it is not worth it at the end!

But illustrating the shifting sands of the mining world, 50c/gigahash is no longer a reasonable price for used equipment, more like 25c now a month later.

You may try to cloud hashprofit mining, you need only stay a deposit and you can get satosi when you sleep, this time using a cloud of mining you can get a return on investment within 4-5 months, so the rest of the existing contract, you still can benefit ... ever heard of HYIP-scams?

mining is not worth the power anymore, so just ASICs for BTC now, but those will go offline if price doesn't pickup soon or diff fall significantly
